04:26 PM i-make-robots: several tries later, I'm still not able to make a decent two finger gripper. https://www.instagram.com/p/CEKMbLWj9j1/
06:00 PM mrdata: https://phys.org/news/2020-08-aerogel-micro-material-future.html
06:06 PM mrdata: i-make-robots, instagram doesnt want to show me that image unless i sign up; not going to, can you post to imgur
06:11 PM mrdata: a two-finger gripper is kind of like kitchen tongs. pretty simple but quite useful. i suppose key design elements are, finger shape and non-slip, holding force, position and orientation changes
06:12 PM mrdata: *design parameters
06:24 PM i-make-robots: hm. wil it show if i embed them on a web page?
06:25 PM i-make-robots: https://www.marginallyclever.com/2020/08/sixi-robot-gripper-design-adventures/
06:26 PM i-make-robots: mrdata those are all good parameters. i'd add total weight, total payload, stroke size...
06:26 PM i-make-robots: maybe comms protocol and information available via API.
06:26 PM mrdata: ok
06:30 PM i-make-robots: so the pics show two of my latest gripper attempts. I've been through several others: camera quick mount, soft grippers in PET, and more.
06:30 PM i-make-robots: price for a commercial gripper is .... actually, the more i work at it the more reasonable that price becomes. but it's still stupidly large.
06:33 PM mrdata: the commercial products have been through multiple iterations of design and test, and repeating that yourself is a learning experience and a labour of love
06:34 PM mrdata: you pay for a part of that in the purchase price, or you pay in many hours of enjoyment of the hobby
06:38 PM mrdata: my own adventures in this kind of stalled around how to make gears precisely with minimal equipment
06:43 PM mrdata: it was planetary gears that i wanted, with a braking system, and in exotic materials like delron
06:43 PM mrdata: *delrin
07:48 PM i-make-robots: that does sound tricky.
