01:34 AM rue_shop1: heh
01:40 AM rue_shop1: its got a hole for a cone
04:37 AM mrdata: rue_shop1, cool! does it have a mechanical kiln sitter?
04:38 AM mrdata: they switch off when the clay begins to slump
04:39 AM mrdata: it's becoming hard to find good vintage kilns
04:40 AM mrdata: most everything these days locks you into using a particular clay
04:40 AM mrdata: made or sold by the manufacturer
04:40 AM mrdata: instead of natural clays
04:43 AM mrdata: if you want to experiment with your own materials, it's at your own risk. there is no warranty
04:43 AM mrdata: just give me the fire bricks and i'll make my own
04:45 AM mrdata: oh, bring me kanthal wire tho as well
04:45 AM mrdata: lots of it
09:10 AM Phrkd is now known as Phreaked
09:52 AM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
11:14 AM rue_mohr: mrdata, it did
11:14 AM rue_mohr: looks like it was bypassed a long time ago
11:18 AM mrdata: rue_mohr, the mechanical kiln sitters can be a big advantage when working with a strange clay formulation
11:20 AM mrdata: since all you need is a clay bar of precise dimensions to place under the shutoff lever
11:21 AM mrdata: which is always available as scrap from the stuff youre using
11:24 AM rue_mohr: makes sense
11:25 AM rue_mohr: so, there is a market for retrograde kiln setters then
11:26 AM mrdata: if people like to collect natural clay and fire it, yes
11:26 AM mrdata: which is very easy to find
11:28 AM mrdata: you just throw random dirt into a pail of water and swish it, skim off floaty bits, pour the top into another bucket, let it settle, pour off the water and dry it out
11:29 AM mrdata: s/top/suspension/
11:30 AM mrdata: with completely unknown composition, you dont know when it will slump; high iron content softens the clay early
