09:43 AM goppo: anyone know why cycloidal drives aren't used more often for arm joints? there's a lot of planetary drives (low end) and harmonic drives (high end), but you don't see that many cycloidal drives
10:11 AM deshipu: goppo: patents, requirements for small tolerances in machining, internal forces
10:12 AM deshipu: I think mostly patents
10:16 AM goppo: deshipu isn't cycloidal drive an old invention?
10:54 AM deshipu: goppo: ah, right, that was harmonic drives
10:55 AM deshipu: looking it up a bit more, cycloidal drive put too much strain on the disc, so it wears out quickly, and also cause vibrations apparently

12:39 PM goppo: deshipu why do you think it puts too much strain on the disc? every pin makes contact with the disc
12:48 PM ThomasEgi: interesting, i was pretty much investigating the same question only a few days ago.
04:17 PM deshipu: goppo: it's the outer "teeth" of the disc that take all the force, and they get worn out quickly
