12:00 AM rue_mohr: stainless tends to work harden and snap
12:05 AM rue_mohr: its a general pain in the ass to work with,
12:05 AM rue_mohr: its generally a pretty soft metal
12:05 AM rue_mohr: unless it workhardens, then its tougher than anything
12:05 AM rue_mohr: *till it snaps
12:05 AM mun: righ
12:40 AM torque: surely thick aluminum gets you better stiffness than thin stainless for the same mass
02:29 AM i-make-robots: is there a cost factor? Is aluminum the right combination of rigidity and affordability?
02:41 AM mun: torque is it? that's precisely what i'm trying to figure out
02:44 AM mrdata: tensile strength and stiffness are separately determined when you use hollow tubes
02:44 AM mrdata: so you can have both the strength and stiffness desired
02:45 AM mrdata: steel is cheaper than aluminum often
02:46 AM mrdata: so what oher properties would you like to include? maybe those will help determine the optimal material better
02:47 AM mrdata: for instance, spacex star ship is stainless steel and not carbon fibre due to its properties at high temperatures
02:47 AM mrdata: machineability is one such parameter
02:48 AM mrdata: and is why a lot of tranditional machines have brass parts
02:50 AM mrdata: mun, ^
02:50 AM mun: mrdata yeah i've thought about using 304 tubes too
02:51 AM mun: and they're so cheap
02:53 AM mrdata: yes
08:10 AM mun: is it common to use limit switches with servos? servos already are closed-loop, so limit switches shouldn't be necessary, right?
09:50 AM deshipu: once you calibrate them, right
09:18 PM Tom_L:
11:12 PM SpeedEvil is now known as Guest24715
11:34 PM rue_mohr:
11:35 PM rue_mohr: I dont use limit switchs on my machine at all, I position the 0,0 by pendant and make sure the limits are within the machine
11:48 PM rue_shop1: .
11:55 PM armyofevilrobots: rue_mohr : https://freesewing.org/blog/facemask-frenzy/
11:55 PM armyofevilrobots: Also: https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/25857-prusa-protective-face-shield-rc2
11:55 PM rue_shop1: ah there yar
11:56 PM armyofevilrobots: Ya. Moving back to the cad station to make some more modifications to our facemask design. I'll post it on Github or something when I am done.
11:56 PM rue_shop1: same mask, but this page has the pattern!
11:56 PM rue_shop1: so, where is the acrylic comming from to make the fronts?
