02:45 AM rue_shop2: ok, well thats a start, I'll have to pull some stuff from the old drive
05:21 AM rue_mohr: morning polprog
05:21 AM polprog: morning rue
05:21 AM rue_mohr: 3am, going to bed
05:21 AM rue_mohr: even my foot is asleep
05:21 AM polprog: i should index all the pca i have like i did with other parts
05:21 AM polprog: sleep well rue_mohr
05:22 AM polprog: s/pca/PCs/
01:01 PM rue_mohr: ok so
01:01 PM rue_mohr: the SPA112 is logged into asterisk
01:02 PM rue_mohr: and I'm importing pulse timing code to the filter analizer project
02:43 PM squirrel1 is now known as veverak
06:55 PM rue_mohr: bah, I'm just not getting anything done
07:02 PM logb0t_ is now known as logb0t
08:41 PM rue_shop1: rue_mohr, post detector stuff
09:00 PM Tom_L: fpm
09:00 PM Tom_L: don't forget
09:01 PM rue_shop1: fpm?
09:01 PM Tom_L: fingers on wrong keys
09:01 PM Tom_L: no feeling in index
09:48 PM rue_mohr: reinstalled one of the workstations in the shop this weekend
09:48 PM rue_mohr: just getting data off the old drive now
10:01 PM Tom_L: crash?
10:01 PM rue_mohr: it hadn't been updated in so long that apt couldn't do it
10:02 PM rue_mohr: and its a workstation, I prettymuch make sure there is nothing important on them
10:11 PM Tom_L: what did you put on it?
10:11 PM rue_mohr: 64 bit debian
10:11 PM Tom_L: what ver
10:11 PM rue_mohr: new
10:11 PM rue_mohr: (?)
10:11 PM Tom_L: 10?
10:11 PM Tom_L: 10.1
10:11 PM Tom_L: is buster
10:11 PM Tom_L: 9 is stretch
10:11 PM Tom_L: i've got buster on my test pc
10:12 PM Tom_L: i think the server is 8
10:12 PM rue_mohr: 10.2
10:12 PM Tom_L: the mill is old
10:13 PM rue_mohr: there is no requierment for thigns to be new
10:13 PM Tom_L: how do you find out?
10:13 PM rue_mohr: gee whiz
10:13 PM Tom_L: err nevermind
10:13 PM rue_mohr: cat /etc/debian_version
10:13 PM Tom_L: it's not even on
10:13 PM Tom_L: so used to using putty to the server...
10:14 PM Tom_L: so how do you remote into another pc to go out on irc?
10:14 PM rue_mohr: ?
10:14 PM rue_mohr: I have irc running on every statation
10:14 PM Tom_L: you've got a client running on a pc and you want to remote into it to see the irc
10:14 PM Tom_L: just a curiosity
10:15 PM Tom_L: i do too
10:15 PM Tom_L: i know a few guys that do that
10:15 PM rue_mohr: no, all the machines have the irc cleint running and they all see the same thing
10:15 PM rue_mohr: yea, I dont
10:15 PM Tom_L: me either
10:15 PM Tom_L: ssh?
10:15 PM rue_mohr: there are 4 machines running irc now tho
10:15 PM Tom_L: i've no clue
10:15 PM rue_mohr: I just use ssh to do stuff on other machines
10:16 PM rue_mohr: but I'm a command line guy
10:16 PM Tom_L: i know
10:16 PM Tom_L: i'm about half and half
10:16 PM Tom_L: trying to learn more
10:16 PM rue_mohr: mhm
10:17 PM Tom_L: it's pretty easy to mount my other 2 ssd from 10 though
10:17 PM Tom_L: i've had to grab files from them when i forgot to copy them to a thumbdrive
10:18 PM rue_mohr: yup :)
10:18 PM rue_mohr: I try to keep everything on the fileserver
10:18 PM rue_mohr: all the machines have it mounted
10:18 PM Tom_L: i don't want to dual boot with grub though
10:18 PM Tom_L: problem here is i don't leave them all on
10:18 PM Tom_L: just this one and the server
10:19 PM Tom_L: nothing critical on this one
10:19 PM Tom_L: i suppose you can set it up to mount them on boot can't you?
10:19 PM rue_mohr: well I got piffle done this weekend
10:20 PM Tom_L: i can't get motivated to do much of anything
10:20 PM rue_mohr: spent the body of today replacing a roof jack in the motorhome ma has parked here for the winter
10:20 PM rue_mohr: I sat in my shop today looking around and pondering how everything I need to do anything is right there
10:20 PM rue_mohr: just need a task
10:20 PM chisight: had to redo brakes on my car, so feel the pain of working in the cold.
10:21 PM Tom_L: i went out and cleaned the shop workbench a tiny bit just to say i did something
10:22 PM Tom_L: i did rework my mill config just a little bit to make it 'universal'
10:22 PM rue_mohr: I'm kinda sad cuase if i had every expensive toy in the world right now, I'd still be sitting here chatting
10:22 PM Tom_L: so i can use it on the test pc with a different card
10:22 PM rue_mohr: good show
10:22 PM Tom_L: only one line to fix
10:23 PM Tom_L: instead of hardcoding the board name in each line they're all: [HOSTMOT2](BOARD) now and can be changed with one line in the ini file
10:24 PM Tom_L: 2 lines actually because one uses an ip address and the other a pp port address
10:24 PM rue_mohr: hhe
10:25 PM rue_mohr: the thought of sitting on the moon chatting on irc crossed my mind. but its a stupid idea, the latency would be unbearable.
10:25 PM Tom_L: better than mars
10:25 PM rue_mohr: totally
10:26 PM Tom_L: you wouldn't want to make many typos
10:29 PM Tom_L: how would you do an os upgrade?
10:29 PM rue_mohr: I'm not a fan of staying up to date with the latest anyhow
10:29 PM rue_mohr: I just want bug fixes
10:29 PM Tom_L: apt update?
10:30 PM Tom_L: apt upgrade?
10:30 PM rue_mohr: I suspect that speed wouldn't be an issue, just latency
10:30 PM rue_mohr: heh, at 100mbits, I wonder how much data would be in-flight at any point in time
10:30 PM Tom_L: several
10:31 PM Tom_L: i should remove unstable from the repo i suppose
10:32 PM Tom_L: i had to add it to get a lib that wasn't in buster yet
10:33 PM rue_mohr: ah right
10:53 PM Tom_L: i wanted to upgrade to see if they added that file in yet
10:54 PM Tom_L: they can't build a new distributable iso until that gets solved
10:54 PM Tom_L: python-gtksourceview2
10:55 PM Tom_L: the one in buster doesn't work
10:56 PM rue_mohr: yea, the debian softwre process is a mess
10:57 PM Tom_L: it breaks one of the graphical GUI for lcnc
10:57 PM Tom_L: 2
10:57 PM Tom_L: gmoccapy and gscreen
10:57 PM Tom_L: i use axis so it doesn't matter much to me
10:58 PM Tom_L: but they're still part of the distributable package...
10:58 PM rue_mohr: I'm interseted in what I can do with the 64 bit workstation
10:58 PM rue_mohr: I should be able to run the fpga softares
10:58 PM Tom_L: yeah, it runs in 32bit as well though
10:59 PM Tom_L: xilinx or something else?
10:59 PM rue_mohr: dunno
10:59 PM rue_mohr: I need a tourguide
10:59 PM rue_mohr: but that can all come later
10:59 PM Tom_L: the xilinx you want is in their archives now
10:59 PM Tom_L: 14.7 iirc is the last version before they changed programs
11:00 PM rue_mohr: I have that programmer, but all the hardware for it seems REALLY expensive
11:00 PM Tom_L: newer stuff works on newer chips
11:00 PM rue_mohr: I dont want newer
11:00 PM Tom_L: no that's why i said you need 14.7
11:00 PM rue_mohr: I'd be happy to be able to program a cpld
11:00 PM Tom_L: webpack
11:00 PM rue_mohr: like a 22V10
11:00 PM Tom_L: all i'm familiar with is xilinx
11:01 PM Tom_L: i'm sure verilog etc is the same
11:01 PM rue_mohr: but its $100 in programming hardware and $50 in boards, and and ... arg
11:01 PM Tom_L: i should send you this board
11:01 PM rue_mohr: so the frustration is that even if I had all the hardware and software, I still dont know verilog to make anything
11:01 PM Tom_L: but then you'd ask questions and i wouldn't be able to find answers
11:02 PM Tom_L: it's not hard
11:02 PM Tom_L: i used one of the tutorial sites to do what little i know
11:02 PM rue_mohr: how did you start with fpgas
11:03 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_tws4AXg7asC75dRvL_4vRWbz1F5focG
11:03 PM Tom_L: i don't even remember now
11:03 PM rue_mohr: was it with the robotics?
11:03 PM Tom_L: i got a experimenter board years ago
11:04 PM Tom_L: al williams is one to look for
11:04 PM Tom_L: for tutorials
11:04 PM rue_mohr: cpld or fpga :)
11:04 PM Tom_L: doesn't matter much
11:04 PM Tom_L: one stores it and the other loads it on boot
11:04 PM rue_mohr: curious tho
11:04 PM rue_mohr: both from vhdl yes?
11:05 PM Tom_L: yeah pretty sure
11:05 PM Tom_L: vhdl & verilog
11:05 PM Tom_L: i don't know the difference honestly
11:05 PM Tom_L: very similar
11:05 PM rue_mohr: hmm
11:05 PM Tom_L: i didn't look at that yt but he must have put his tutorials on yt
11:06 PM Tom_L: i'd watch em if i were you
11:08 PM Tom_L: https://www.eeweb.com/profile/al-williams/following
11:09 PM Tom_L: https://macrofab.com/blog/mep-ep94-al-williams-field-programmable-gate-arrays/
11:09 PM rue_mohr: hard when i cant play along
11:10 PM Tom_L: he give you building blocks
11:10 PM Tom_L: at least when he had it on a webpage
11:11 PM Tom_L: http://www.simpledigitalcomputer.com/PLDGettingStarted.aspx
11:12 PM Tom_L: you can simulate it in xilinx iirc
11:12 PM rue_mohr: ok, well, lets make it part of my winter todo list
11:12 PM Tom_L: you can go thru that last one with no hardware
11:18 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/QMTECH-XC6SLX16-Spartan-Xilinx-Development/dp/B07PTS94MV/ref=sr_1_35?keywords=xilinx+fpga+board&qid=1574053861&sr=8-35
11:21 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/XILINX-Development-Spartan-XC6SLX9-AX309C/dp/B07DBNVSH8/ref=sr_1_25?keywords=xilinx+fpga+board&qid=1574053861&sr=8-25
11:21 PM Tom_L: that one's a little more but has a display and a few leds on it etc
11:21 PM Tom_L: probably some buttons you can program
11:22 PM Tom_L: and it looks like it's buffered
11:23 PM Tom_L: looks like it comes with the jtag programmer too
11:24 PM Tom_L: that would probably be equivalent to the one i have but with a newer much bigger fpga
11:28 PM rue_mohr: ;)
11:28 PM rue_mohr: I need to sit down with it
11:28 PM rue_mohr: slowly falling asleep just now
