12:10 PM gartt: In the US, I wonder what the longest-reaching RF would be, non-audio (text data only or possibly compresssed binary) while being easily interfacable with a Raspberry Pi without an amateur radio license. Something like a solar-powered weather station in a high area wouldn't need a cellular module then
12:14 PM ace4016: most bands are taken and if you need to broadcas, you'll likely need a license to allocate your slice of the spectrum
12:15 PM ace4016: ISM is fairly open, but you're restricted in how you navigate that space as others can interfere and the FCC does regulate power
12:47 PM gartt: Seems there aren't a lot of good options without a license
12:48 PM rue_bed: UULF?
12:49 PM gartt: I saw this but it's discontinued: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/retired/9411
12:49 PM rue_bed: there is narrow beam p-p wifi
12:50 PM * gartt googles
12:50 PM rue_bed: directional dishes
12:51 PM rue_bed: I worked at an office we had to put a relay station on a mountain
12:51 PM rue_bed: might have been about 20-30km out
12:52 PM gartt: Wow! Using what technology? Narrow beam p-p wifi
12:52 PM rue_bed: normal wifi hardware and really narrow beam, high gain dishes
12:53 PM rue_bed: 1 sec
12:53 PM rue_bed: http://ruemohr.org/%7Eircjunk/images/canuhearme.jpg
12:53 PM gartt: I suppose that would work well for a stationary set-up
12:54 PM gartt: Wow. An instant migraine machine
12:54 PM rue_bed: stupid laptop had horrid wifi
12:54 PM gartt: Hmm, you're still too stubborn to use igal for simple thumbnailed images in directories :)
12:55 PM rue_bed: dont want to take up server space or bandwidth
12:55 PM gartt: rue_bed: I didn't think range like that would be possible even with line of sight
12:55 PM rue_bed: it was line of sight
12:56 PM gartt: Yeah, but when I get curious and start browsing through photos, I (and most other poeple) probably use far more of your bandwidth than if small thumbnails were used
12:56 PM rue_bed: but people usually dont
12:56 PM gartt: Also if they were sorted by category, there'd be only a tiny fraction of the bandwidth
12:56 PM rue_bed: I'm getting closer to a site re-arrange
12:56 PM gartt: Since I'm only interested in your ROV photos for example
12:56 PM rue_bed: that folder 'images' was kinda a misc bin
12:57 PM rue_bed: the organized stuff is under 'robots' or 'projects' +- if its a robot or not
12:58 PM gartt: Just saying, super simple solution. No DBs required, no coding, just one line on the command line to generate thumbnails for everything in the dir. I use it for absolutely everything. I even use it instead of a photo viewer here
12:58 PM rue_bed: I have a new folder called tempimage that auto ditches all but the last 10 images I'v uploaded
12:58 PM gartt: Whatever happened to your ROV anyway?
12:58 PM rue_bed: yea and thumnails take up space
12:59 PM rue_bed: part of the problem is that there is so much on the site that I'm not completely able to *just* deal with it
12:59 PM rue_bed: I'm working on it tho
12:59 PM rue_bed: rov would be a robot
01:00 PM rue_bed: http://ruemohr.org/%7Eircjunk/robots/robot_family2.jpg
01:00 PM rue_bed: is it one of those?
01:00 PM rue_bed: ah! a collage under an area map!
01:00 PM rue_bed: good iea
01:00 PM rue_bed: d
01:01 PM gartt: That's the family reunion eh? Bunny ears and all
01:01 PM rue_bed: its an old image
01:01 PM rue_bed: some of them aren't around anymore and there have been lots new
01:02 PM rue_bed: yea, 2010
01:02 PM rue_bed: lots of stuff has been projects
01:02 PM rue_bed: http://ruemohr.org/%7Eircjunk/projects/?C=M;O=D
01:03 PM rue_bed: oh I redid my slideshow scripts, thats why it all looks so new
01:04 PM rue_bed: ok, getting out of bed...
01:04 PM gartt: Best way to keep those pesky kids off your property http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/projects/mecha1/p1080042.jpg
01:07 PM gartt: rue_bed: Since you're serving static files, have you considered nginx? Smaller, simpler, faster and easier to configure
02:38 PM fling_ is now known as fling
03:39 PM rue_shop1: doing a lost foam casting of a project box
03:39 PM rue_shop1: see if it works out
