01:30 AM rue_bed: --
01:34 AM mrdata__: whats up
01:34 AM rue_bed: nothing for 2 days
01:34 AM rue_bed: I'm just working on my CAM program
01:34 AM rue_bed: and dealing with life
01:34 AM mrdata__: k
01:34 AM mrdata__: i'm frustrated at non-progress with a project
01:34 AM mrdata__: for past couple years already
01:34 AM rue_bed: oh?
01:34 AM mrdata__: it's really getting to me
01:34 AM mrdata__: requires skills i do not have, or resources i cant employ
01:34 AM rue_bed: whats it?
01:34 AM mrdata__: best case: it's a weird kind of motor; worse case: a mobile sculpture
01:34 AM mrdata__: with some science needed to figure out which
01:35 AM rue_bed: ah
01:35 AM mrdata__: i want to make a planetary gear system to cause magnets to orbit and spin
01:35 AM mrdata__: in a peculiar config
01:36 AM mrdata__: and the rate has to be controllable; so it needs a braking mechanism maybe
01:37 AM mrdata__: so i have both a machining problem; and a materials problem. the bulk of the structure is non-metallic and nonmagnetic
01:39 AM mrdata__: a machineable plastic might do, but delrin is too expensive
01:40 AM mrdata__: plus i havent worked out sizes of parts to any kind of confidence, which is a result of torque speed, and strength inputs
01:40 AM mrdata__: which i dont knwo
01:42 AM mrdata__: and vibrational tolerances are low
01:42 AM mrdata__: so weight and balance are important
01:42 AM mrdata__: but i am not sure just how important
01:47 AM mrdata__: so i did work out some math for involute spur gears
01:48 AM mrdata__: presently just outside gears but this needs inside ones as well
01:49 AM mrdata__: but i dont know if i can laser cut them to any reasonable accuracy
01:49 AM mrdata__: since a laser cutter does not make a perfectly square edge of precise size
01:52 AM mrdata__: one proposed solution to this entails gluing a couple layers together
01:52 AM mrdata__: but this makes an assembly problem of its own
01:54 AM mrdata__: and assembly is already hairy
02:04 AM mrdata__: so given that all these parameters are kind of "ish", i am expecting to make several experimental prototypes
02:04 AM mrdata__: and test and adjust
02:05 AM mrdata__: so i'm looking at magnets that are half cylindrical, 0.5 inch diameter, 0.75 inch length
02:06 AM mrdata__: but havent ordered them
02:07 AM mrdata__: err, s/half //
02:07 AM mrdata__: ie theyre not half cylinders
02:07 AM Jak_o_Shadows: I should buy some magnets
02:07 AM mrdata__: yes
02:07 AM mrdata__: theyre fun
02:08 AM mrdata__: so then i'm looking at a tooth modulus of either 0.7 or 1.0 mm
02:09 AM mrdata__: and a small-ish number of teeth
02:09 AM mrdata__: so the gears need under cutting for clearance
02:10 AM mrdata__: 20 degree pressure angle
02:12 AM mrdata__: here's a drawing i mde as part of working out the math of this, https://imgur.com/a/haEoOr4
02:14 AM mrdata__: and after reducing lines, https://imgur.com/a/pv0l0Rf
03:04 AM mrdata__: i'm staring at a mm ruler right now and thinking, OMG the tooth modulus is so tiny it's beyond reason!
03:04 AM mrdata__: but if i double it,
03:05 AM mrdata__: then i'm only going to get like 5 or 8 teeth on this gear
09:07 AM rue_mohr: I got the woodgears software
09:07 AM rue_mohr: its pretty nice
09:11 AM SpeedEvil: :)
02:22 PM LuminaxWk is now known as Luminax
05:14 PM anonnumberanon: oh god, browser tabs filling up with microcontroller programming again
05:14 PM anonnumberanon: what have I done i was suppposed to stay high level
05:18 PM veverak: :D
06:46 PM rue_mohr: high level and micrcontroller dont go togethor
06:50 PM veverak: Cdepends
10:04 PM rue_mohr: ok, sleep out of the way, what to spend the night on...
10:17 PM zhanx: rue_mohr, my prototyping kit for buttons came in
10:17 PM zhanx: 6x6 through hole to smd with 4.5mm to 14 mm button tops 200 with 5 each
10:21 PM rue_mohr: :) k
10:21 PM rue_mohr: buttons for?
10:21 PM zhanx: rue_mohr, anything i need to make
10:21 PM rue_mohr: ok:)
10:22 PM zhanx: remember I am lacking parts and bits
10:22 PM zhanx: so fixing that
10:22 PM rue_mohr: did I show you the 3d printed keybaord?
10:22 PM zhanx: nope
10:22 PM rue_mohr: oh
10:23 PM rue_mohr: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2794705
10:23 PM rue_mohr: I should ahve made the buttons a bit shallower
10:23 PM zhanx: oh nice
10:24 PM zhanx: I need to do a gear reduction system for my printer
10:24 PM rue_mohr: what parts did I send you so far?
10:25 PM rue_mohr: oh I was going to make a thingiverse entry for it
10:27 PM Jak_o_Shadows: I should 3d print a keyboard
10:27 PM Jak_o_Shadows: I have nice switches somewhere
10:28 PM zhanx: Jak_o_Shadows, and make it custom to you
10:28 PM zhanx: mine would be an extra 25% larger
10:29 PM rue_mohr: ... didn't post the other one
10:30 PM zhanx: rue_mohr, wife was bored at work, started googling 3d printers
10:30 PM zhanx: now she wants a delta so she can make vases
10:31 PM zhanx: guess who gets to make the electronics for the bottom of them
10:38 PM Jak_o_Shadows: zhanx, yeah. I have a left hand, which does up; to T, G, B.
10:38 PM Jak_o_Shadows: but i need the other side still
10:39 PM zhanx: its a start Jak_o_Shadows
10:39 PM Jak_o_Shadows: oh, well, I bought the left hand side
10:51 PM rue_mohr: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3192768
10:51 PM rue_mohr: there is the little remote I did, uses a different type of button
10:51 PM zhanx: huge
10:52 PM zhanx: does that fit in a box or pocket
10:53 PM rue_mohr: small , pocket easy
10:53 PM rue_mohr: you could prolyl make it rf if you wanted
10:53 PM rue_mohr: that one does my room lights
10:53 PM zhanx: i voice command mine, i need to add in the motion sensors still
10:54 PM rue_mohr: Alexia, lights off.
10:54 PM rue_mohr: hehe, that will cause trouble later...
10:54 PM zhanx: yep
10:55 PM zhanx: I use Sonoff's
10:55 PM rue_mohr: what are the 3, alexia, ... and ...
10:55 PM zhanx: echo
10:55 PM zhanx: google
10:55 PM zhanx: I have google
10:55 PM zhanx: the mini helps the kids look up stuff with voice commands
10:56 PM rue_mohr: ok, alexia, echo, and...
10:56 PM zhanx: google home
10:57 PM zhanx: I know its a spy machine
10:57 PM zhanx: but
10:57 PM zhanx: its on its own account
11:19 PM rue_mohr: hmmm 63 designs
11:55 PM rue_mohr: you know your too hardcore and programmer when you start ending your sentences with;
11:56 PM zhanx: or you suck when you forget the ;
11:56 PM rue_mohr: wow, most of my work making this motif program is shucking off all the junk in peoples code
11:56 PM rue_mohr: ;
11:58 PM rue_mohr: it seems there are 2 or 3 references on the internet for creating your own RGB colours in X, and they all use a horrid method
11:58 PM rue_mohr: ;
11:59 PM rue_mohr: you can stop that
11:59 PM rue_mohr: you can stop that;
11:59 PM rue_mohr: >:/
11:59 PM rue_mohr: :)
11:59 PM rue_mohr: ;
11:59 PM rue_mohr: 8-o
