02:17 AM rue_mohr: anonnumberanon, is a nm good enough?
08:10 AM veverak: anonnumberanon: thesis submited, not graded yet
10:05 AM sherlock: rue_mohr: there was a period of time where I wondered if you were AvE
10:08 AM robotustra: he he
10:39 AM SpeedEvil: We are all AvE
10:39 AM * SpeedEvil wishes AvE wasn't so AvE.
10:42 AM SpeedEvil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsWs-xYStFo - for example - one of his older vids
10:42 AM robotustra: he produces videos too often
10:42 AM SpeedEvil: It's all too easy for people to become charicatures of themselves
10:43 AM SpeedEvil: 'what do I do now for the next minute - oh, I know, I'll just do an impression of myself rather than do any actual content'
10:44 AM robotustra: "ear plugs, two condoms"
10:44 AM robotustra: yep
10:45 AM robotustra: it's a good question, I'm trying to show a content, not impression
10:45 AM robotustra: but to produce content it takes a time
10:45 AM SpeedEvil: Indeed.
10:46 AM SpeedEvil: It's a hell of a time investment with piles of time off camera unless you are literally doing something like streaming casual gaming in your bra.
10:52 AM robotustra: yeah, before doing something, you have to put light, camera, film it, cut it, edit, put sound, render and publish
06:55 PM rue_mohr: AvE?
06:56 PM rue_mohr: veverak, so you end up using the image of my bot?
07:07 PM robotustra: hm
08:39 PM robotustra: did some drawings https://imgur.com/XDbikNu
08:48 PM Tom_shop: need more X travel
08:49 PM Tom_shop: and you can't mount those blocks like that
08:49 PM Tom_shop: how are you going to get the screws into the slides?
08:49 PM Tom_shop: bring the X slides closer together and you will get more travel and still be able to put the screws in
08:58 PM robotustra: I'll have about 90 mm of travel
08:58 PM robotustra: it's preliminary sketch
08:58 PM robotustra: and I can put rails like this
09:02 PM robotustra: my chuck radius is 160 mm
09:02 PM robotustra: if I'll have 90 mm travel - it's more than enough
09:03 PM Tom_shop: ok but how long are the tools?
09:03 PM Tom_shop: did you figure that in too?
09:04 PM robotustra: yes, I think I'll do tool changer
09:04 PM rue_mohr: :) apparently he knows more than you do and your wrong.
09:04 PM robotustra: I'm rong?
09:04 PM robotustra: wrong?
09:05 PM Tom_shop: i'm just taking some things into account that you may not have thought about
09:05 PM Tom_shop: you may wish you had more travel
09:05 PM robotustra: I wish, but there is a rigidity problem
09:05 PM rue_mohr: I love it when people tell me that the years of experience I have dosn't matter, that I'm wrong
09:06 PM robotustra: rue_mohr, why do you think I show my drawings in here?
09:07 PM robotustra: rue_mohr, just to trigger your experience to critiseze it
09:07 PM Tom_shop: at least you're drawing it first
09:07 PM robotustra: yes
09:07 PM Tom_shop: i scrapped my first couple drawing entirely
09:08 PM robotustra: it's not my first idea, and I can move some parts, but it's close to final dimentions
09:08 PM robotustra: I can't afford more travel
09:08 PM robotustra: max 100 mm
09:10 PM robotustra: and the tooling plate is 270 mm long and 200 mm wide - I can move tool holder/changer on it
09:12 PM robotustra: if I put rails down and blocks up - I'll have small tool plate
09:17 PM robotustra: btw I can gain some space with different tool's length
09:17 PM robotustra: like 3 cm more
09:22 PM robotustra: anyway I can't do huge travel on a compact lathe
09:26 PM Tom_shop: i think your design is ok, i'm just offering some suggestions
09:27 PM robotustra: yeah, thanks
09:28 PM robotustra: I think I have some extra bar in on the front plate of the chuck mount
09:28 PM robotustra: to screw it to the base
09:29 PM robotustra: like 1x1"
09:29 PM robotustra: bar
09:29 PM robotustra: to reinforce it
09:33 PM robotustra: and may be add some more bars in other places
09:54 PM robotustra: Tom_shop, max travel I can get is ~100 mm https://imgur.com/jm7gnZA
10:28 PM Tom_shop: as long as the travel is the same or greater than the lathe bed swing it's ok
10:30 PM robotustra: what is lathe bed swing?
10:31 PM robotustra: the chuck is 160 mm in diameter
10:31 PM robotustra: I'm pretty sure I'll not turn such big parts on it
10:31 PM Tom_shop: center of chuck to lathe bed
10:31 PM robotustra: ah
10:31 PM Tom_shop: you say that now
10:32 PM Tom_shop: you need that much travel for sure
10:32 PM robotustra: the distanse will be about 120 mm
10:32 PM Tom_shop: then you need 20 more mm in X
10:32 PM robotustra: hm
10:33 PM Tom_shop: and probably 30 for tool clearance from part to tool
10:33 PM robotustra: I mean from the carrage to the center of the axis I have 100 mm
10:33 PM robotustra: and 120 is from the axis to the base
10:34 PM robotustra: 120 - vertical clearence, 100 - horizontal
10:35 PM Tom_shop: from center to point on the edge of the rectangular tube
10:35 PM Tom_shop: that's the minimum X travel you need
10:36 PM robotustra: it's 100 mm
10:36 PM robotustra: the width of the plate is 200mm
10:36 PM robotustra: the spindle is in the middle
10:37 PM robotustra: so I have these 100 mm of x travel
10:37 PM rue_bed: so I have a week off
10:37 PM rue_bed: and its -2c out
10:37 PM rue_bed: I'll need to run up the boi;er
10:37 PM Tom_shop: week off for bad behaviour?
10:38 PM Tom_shop: i had to re'drill / tap some holes tonight
10:38 PM Tom_shop: didn't get much done
10:38 PM Tom_shop: test fitted the Z rails a little
10:38 PM Tom_shop: took one of the linear slides apart for the heck of it
10:39 PM robotustra: I would work this loooooong weekend too, but it's interrupted by kid's birthday
10:39 PM robotustra: damn
10:39 PM robotustra: new year holidays are wondeful time for scraping
10:39 PM Tom_shop: but i re'drilled / tapped 12 holes in about 15 min
10:39 PM Tom_shop: figured out how to do it quicker
10:40 PM robotustra: got layout fluid today
10:40 PM robotustra: like the smell
10:40 PM Tom_shop: dykem?
10:40 PM robotustra: yes
10:40 PM Tom_shop: i need to get a bottle of that
10:40 PM Tom_shop: the paste, not the spray
10:41 PM robotustra: I got liquid with the brush
10:41 PM Tom_shop: oh, i did flatten my base rails tonight too
10:42 PM Tom_shop: yeah that's what i want
10:42 PM Tom_shop: i think
10:42 PM Tom_shop: doesn't really dry like the spray layout fluid
10:42 PM robotustra: flatten on the mill?
10:42 PM Tom_shop: no
10:42 PM Tom_shop: not yet
10:42 PM robotustra: with the hammer?
10:42 PM Tom_shop: i was checking for high spots on the bottom of the rails
10:42 PM Tom_shop: file and grinder
10:43 PM Tom_shop: it's really pretty flat
10:43 PM Tom_shop: i was surprised it didn't warp
10:43 PM robotustra: on the surface plate?
10:43 PM Tom_shop: the low spot was a cross rail that was a little low when i welded it on
10:43 PM Tom_shop: no, i don't have one
10:43 PM Tom_shop: i used my 1/2" thick steel table
10:43 PM robotustra: you should buy
10:44 PM robotustra: it's cheap
10:44 PM Tom_shop: i may, but i have no room to put it really
10:44 PM robotustra: the delivery costs, but the stone itself like 55$
10:44 PM robotustra: it's 12x18 " only
10:44 PM robotustra: does not take much space
10:44 PM Tom_shop: i would need a bigger one
10:44 PM robotustra: no, you don't
10:45 PM robotustra: you can use rulers of bigger length
10:45 PM Tom_shop: how are you gonna check 30" long rails for flat if you don't have a 30" stone?
10:45 PM robotustra: level and jo blocks
10:45 PM Tom_shop: i'm not so worred about the bottom anyway
10:45 PM robotustra: and a ruler
10:45 PM Tom_shop: as long as it sits level
10:46 PM Tom_shop: and i'm gonna weld some feet with levelers on the sides of it anyway
10:46 PM robotustra: I learned a lot for the 2-3 latest months about scraping and using it correctly
10:46 PM Tom_shop: but it's flat enough it can be bolted to the bridgeport now
10:47 PM robotustra: there is a good explained russian utube channel about it
10:47 PM Tom_shop: i may check it on his plate when i take it out there
10:47 PM Tom_shop: he's gor a really big one
10:47 PM robotustra: ok, should go sleep
10:47 PM robotustra: good nigh
10:47 PM robotustra: night
10:47 PM Tom_shop: i'm gonna head inside too
10:48 PM Tom_shop: later
10:52 PM Tom_L: so rue_mohr, what are you gonna do with your week off?
11:03 PM rue_mohr: at this rate, sleep
11:03 PM rue_mohr: I have a problem
11:09 PM Tom_L: you should work on it
11:09 PM Tom_L: get the numbers down where they should be
11:10 PM rue_mohr: I have
11:10 PM rue_mohr: there is something underlying at fault
11:10 PM rue_mohr: I have to find out what
11:11 PM Tom_L: poor diet
11:11 PM Tom_L: after all, you are what you eat
11:11 PM Tom_L: i went in circles tonight
11:11 PM rue_mohr: I'v prettymuch cut all the cholesterol from my diet, its something else
11:12 PM rue_mohr: circles?
11:12 PM Tom_L: it doesn't fix itself overnight
11:12 PM rue_mohr: lapping?
11:12 PM rue_mohr: its been 2 years
11:12 PM Tom_L: yeah i had to redo some holes screwed up on
11:12 PM rue_mohr: I cut it all for 5 mo, not much change in the numbers
11:12 PM rue_mohr: oops, by how much?
11:12 PM Tom_L: 90 degrees
11:13 PM rue_mohr: ouch, thats a lot of degrees
11:13 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Z_Axis_Plate_screws2.jpg
11:13 PM Tom_L: those should have been along the other edge of the aluminum plate
11:13 PM Tom_L: now they are. but the plate is starting to look like swiss cheese
11:14 PM rue_mohr: the far edge?
11:14 PM Tom_L: no, the edge to the right
11:14 PM Tom_L: 90 degrees
11:14 PM rue_mohr: why does what matter?
11:14 PM rue_mohr: mm confused
11:14 PM rue_mohr: the plate is square
11:15 PM Tom_L: because the aluminum plate mounts to the slides and they go up and down, not sideways
11:15 PM Tom_L: the plate is rectangle
11:15 PM rue_mohr: k, I dont know which way is down on it
11:15 PM Tom_L: the right edge is down
11:15 PM rue_mohr: ooh
11:15 PM rue_mohr: its accidently left justified
11:16 PM Tom_L: i had to redo all the plates when i got the parts because all the holes were done for slides that i didn't get
11:16 PM Tom_L: so i corrected the hole patterns for the slides before i drilled anything
11:16 PM Tom_L: but i forgot to fix this plate
11:16 PM rue_mohr: cart/horse error
11:17 PM Tom_L: i see what i did wrong now
11:18 PM Tom_L: it's an error in the cad file
11:18 PM Tom_L: i'm not sure when or how it happened but it did
11:18 PM rue_mohr: http://www.discerningtheworld.com/images/wpi/CartBeforeTheHorse.jpg
11:18 PM rue_mohr: ?
11:19 PM Tom_L: the aluminum plate used to be in the main assembly but when i redid it, i put it in a sub assembly but left a copy of it in the main assembly and forgot about it
11:19 PM Tom_L: so there are actually 2 z aluminum plates and there should only be one
11:20 PM Tom_L: and one is turned and the other one isn't
11:20 PM Tom_L: otherwise i would have gotten it right the first time
11:20 PM Tom_L: it all goes back to modeling the wrong slides before i had the actual parts
11:20 PM Tom_L: they sent me different ones than what the ad said
11:21 PM Tom_L: i had the models anyway just used the wrong set
11:22 PM Tom_L: the hole spacing was different on the actual ones vs the ones i had modeled originally
11:24 PM rue_mohr: https://www.phrases.org.uk/images/cart-before-the-horse.jpg
11:26 PM rue_mohr: I suggest finishing it up and making a new plate if it becomes an issue later
11:26 PM Tom_L: it should be fine
11:26 PM rue_mohr: if you start going backwards, you wont finish
11:27 PM Tom_L: if i change the Z offset i'll just match the hole pattern on a new plate
11:27 PM Tom_L: that's all that will ever mount to that
11:30 PM Tom_L: ok i fixed the model
