02:55 AM veverak: robots
02:58 AM veverak: that's just the way there are
02:58 AM veverak: they want to be big
02:58 AM veverak: :)
03:08 AM rue_shop3: :)
03:08 AM rue_shop3: that mecha was only supposed to be 3 feet
03:08 AM rue_shop3: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/projects/mecha1/p1080051.jpg
03:08 AM rue_shop3: it wasn't
03:09 AM rue_shop3: its like, 5
03:09 AM rue_shop3: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/projects/mecha1/p1080049.jpg
03:15 AM veverak: nice!
03:15 AM veverak: well
03:15 AM veverak: money arrived
03:15 AM veverak: veverak: you shall not open the aliexpress
03:15 AM rue_shop3: hehehe
03:17 AM veverak: rue_shop3: dynamixel servos started to smile at me
03:17 AM veverak: I can see them!
03:18 AM veverak: but
03:18 AM veverak: there are certain watches I wanted for a while
03:23 AM veverak: OK
03:23 AM veverak: there is one feature that I may miss in ROS and C++ files
03:23 AM veverak: I think I want something like: for each file, specify log level that can be used, by setting 'smaller' log level that can be used -> log commands with smaller log level that specified, should not be even compiled
03:38 AM rue_shop3: had something like that once
03:38 AM rue_shop3: the unwanted messages got defined as nothing
03:39 AM rue_shop3: #define printf(A)
03:39 AM rue_shop3: easiest way to optimize
03:39 AM veverak: yeah
03:39 AM veverak: simple macro
07:21 AM warhable: Hey everyone! New guy here really interested in getting started in robotics. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to begin? Thank you!
07:23 AM deshipu: it very much depends on what you exactly mean by "robotics"
07:24 AM warhable: I've done some programming in the past, honestly I just think the idea of being able to program something that you can physically touch would be awesome. Even if it's something as simple as a car with motors
07:26 AM deshipu: oh, ok then, there are lots of kits for that
08:16 AM robopal: warhable, do you like to build stuff from scratch or buy of the shelf parts and program the thing to do stuff
12:44 PM rue_bed: its good to have a budget when asked that question
12:45 PM Tom_L: budget dictates scratch built
12:45 PM Tom_L: and alot of scratching
12:46 PM rue_bed: its amazing how much construction knowhow you can do without by having a 3d printer
12:46 PM rue_bed: ya just print everything
12:47 PM rue_bed: ok, ... think I was up till about 2 last night
12:48 PM Tom_L: naw, just 1
01:12 PM Ziaz: would it be possible to build a robot that would build a robot to disassemble the first robot, and if so would this be suicide, or would the first robot merely live on in the second?
01:13 PM Ziaz: how individual is a robot, since he has no soul?
03:04 PM patr0clus is now known as s3nd1v0g1us
03:42 PM Deacyde is now known as PickleRick
03:43 PM PickleRick is now known as RicklePick
03:49 PM z64555: that escalted from a simple build issue to a philosophical one
03:52 PM ace4016: ?
04:24 PM z64555: .clog
04:24 PM z64555: argh, what is the command
04:26 PM z64555: anyway, some user named Ziaz popped in and asked about robots assembling robots that would disassemble the assemblers
04:27 PM z64555: and then went on to ask if the assembler bots would be committing suicide
04:46 PM SpeedEvil: That presumes that souls, and percieved selfhood is real.
05:23 PM anniepoo: afternoon all
05:23 PM anniepoo: 8cD
05:24 PM anniepoo: hours?
05:24 PM SpeedEvil: Afternoon, collection of random chemicals that thinks it's anniepoo.
05:26 PM anniepoo: howdy, collection of electrons claiming to be collection of random chemicals that thinks it's SpeedEvil
05:28 PM SpeedEvil: How goes the snail?
05:28 PM SpeedEvil: Or has that stalled.
05:28 PM anniepoo: no, it's not stalled
05:28 PM anniepoo: it's been a bit sidelined by a combo of dancing robot and work
05:28 PM SpeedEvil: Ah.
05:31 PM anniepoo: graon
05:32 PM anniepoo: I have a bunch of mindless visualization work to do
05:32 PM anniepoo: want to do "hours"?
05:32 PM anniepoo: do you know my productivity trick?
05:34 PM SpeedEvil: Not really alas.
05:35 PM anniepoo: as in 'don't know' or 'not up for it'?
05:35 PM anniepoo: 8cD
05:35 PM anniepoo: I asked two questions - my bad
05:36 PM SpeedEvil: I'm rarely able to do more than 15 minutes of 'stuff' a day, due to health issues.
05:36 PM anniepoo: ah, yes
05:36 PM anniepoo: sorry
05:36 PM anniepoo: found sombody on another chan
05:36 PM anniepoo: thanks
05:36 PM SpeedEvil: :)
07:46 PM robotustra: hi
07:46 PM robotustra: G
07:50 PM theBear: sup
07:50 PM theBear: G
07:50 PM theBear: hehe, that wacky urban sland'
07:50 PM theBear: err, slang
08:10 PM trojan is now known as synja
10:29 PM anniepoo: okey dokey
10:30 PM anniepoo: I have this puppet made of foam rubber balls, with fake fur hair on top
10:30 PM anniepoo: Mounting it to the mechanism, which is 1/8" welding rod
10:30 PM theBear: bingedy bangedy bong
10:30 PM anniepoo: a robot wearing a thong
10:31 PM anniepoo: bingedy bandedy bing
10:31 PM anniepoo: 8cD your turn
10:31 PM anniepoo: want to attach the robot at the top. Now when the rod goes down, it compresses the robot
10:31 PM theBear: hmm, are foam rubber balls err, like nerf golf balls, or them little "bouncy balls" that yer throw and they fly this way and that ricocheting all over the place for a few minutes like gunfire in a cartoon ? or err, help me picture this cute little guy, so i picturing the hair on top of the right dude
10:32 PM anniepoo: like a nerf ball, yes
10:32 PM anniepoo: hang on
10:32 PM theBear: err, who put the doop in the doop de doop de doop ? who put the ram, in the ramAlamA DING DONG ?!?!?!?
10:32 PM * theBear hang's
10:33 PM anniepoo: like the filling in a sofa
10:34 PM anniepoo: left phone at home, having to set up to take a pic
10:34 PM z64555: so, schiscabob them onto the welding rod, place a washer at the top and cover it up with the hair?
10:35 PM anniepoo: yah, the hair, stupidly, is already glued down
10:35 PM z64555: <.<
10:35 PM z64555: just put more on there, I guess
10:35 PM z64555: nobody will notice
10:36 PM theBear: heh, if you mean the filling in a futon, i got just under 13months of it spread all over the flat here, and well, i think i'm more familiar with that stupid goes everywhere it can find with the lightest puff of wind seemingly infinitely-supplied-in-any-given-futon, if said futon is tapped and said foam let loose for whatever reasdons... maaaaan, mentioning coach foam isn't the way to get my attention anywhere outside of that whole situation
10:36 PM anniepoo: hmm
10:36 PM anniepoo: no, futons are full of cotton
10:38 PM anniepoo: http://partyserver.rocks/anniepoo/theguy.jpg
10:38 PM theBear: but if yer mean old fashioned regular sofa/cushion kinda yellowey used to be by far most commonly seen foam stuff, i know that too, and think i can manage thinking about it, actually it's the same stuff, just that in a futon it's been cut up into teeny weeny little chunks for some reason, one that is amazingly annoying and messy if things go wqrong
10:38 PM anniepoo: yellow springy stuff
10:38 PM anniepoo: yup
10:38 PM anniepoo: oh, you have a cheap futon
10:38 PM anniepoo: yah, those are shredded foam rubber
10:39 PM anniepoo: speaking of which, anybody have a use for 420 gallons of it?
10:39 PM anniepoo: I have a bunch left over from a project
10:39 PM anniepoo: http://partyserver.rocks/anniepoo/theguy.jpg
10:40 PM theBear: they are ? hmmm, i guess i had some kinda whatchacallit, ya know, cheap impersonation futon all these years, plus the 13 odd months between the hole starting and finally replacing it and getting the leaky one out the door.... maaan, cotton would be way easier to deal with, and i thinkin less tumble-weed-ey when it comes to movement of air and travelling far and wide\
10:40 PM anniepoo: I used to have a really good one, in the days when it was a weird thing
10:40 PM anniepoo: bought from some hippy dippy natural store in SF
10:41 PM anniepoo: apparently that's the traditional way they're made in japan
10:42 PM anniepoo: ok, I'm going to put some contact cement on the end of the rod, cover with polyethelyne bag,
10:42 PM anniepoo: stick it up him, then pull the bag off
10:43 PM anniepoo: then squeeze his head real hard and activate the glue
10:43 PM anniepoo: XcD
10:43 PM * theBear thinks.... diy metal tank bbq, 44galon, cut in half, errr, meh, uncut in half, * 10-ish, hmm, i'd estimate that isn't NEARLY enough of the stuff to fill a single couch/double-bed-ish sized futon, cos after filling the whole effing flat, the couch end around knee deep by the end, when i finally got rid of the leaky thing, you could barely see that even the corner near the hole was a little softer than the rest of the thing, it sure didn't
10:43 PM * theBear look like it'd already spit out maybe 6 or 8 times it's own volume of the stuff, my god ! (at least until i finally finish cleaning up the foam any day now, and likely some time after that, i get a bit excited and emotional when i think about the subject, forgive my intererference, doing the opposite of helping answer your question <wink>)
10:44 PM anniepoo: no no
10:44 PM anniepoo: 420
10:44 PM anniepoo: not 42
10:44 PM anniepoo: yes - I had no idea how much to order
10:44 PM anniepoo: so I ordered 75 lbs
10:44 PM anniepoo: came as 2 hay bale sized bales
10:45 PM theBear: yeah, i'm imagining 10 bbq's worth of 44gallon drums, without being cut in half as they are when you use them for a bbq, about 440 i thinkin
10:45 PM anniepoo: all wrapped up in plastic
10:45 PM z64555: 420 gallons of what??
10:45 PM theBear: seriously, you can't imagine how much stuff came outta the thing
10:45 PM anniepoo: shredded foam rubber
10:45 PM anniepoo: I can!@
10:45 PM z64555: compressed??
10:45 PM anniepoo: so, I take a utility knife, and stupidly cut a hole in it to get a sample
10:45 PM anniepoo: it starts ripping
10:46 PM z64555: noooo
10:46 PM theBear: even looking around the house at the dune-like banks of it here and there and everywhere, i still struggle to believe how much it spat out, even ignoring the fact the actual futon still weighed a ton and looked almost unaffected when removed recently
10:46 PM anniepoo: making a sort of fountain
10:46 PM z64555: definitely compressed
10:46 PM anniepoo: aaaargh!
10:46 PM z64555: that's gonna be fun to clean up
10:47 PM anniepoo: I probably threw out a third of that bale when cleaning up, but still have 3 of those huge rubber garbage cans full of it
10:47 PM z64555: lol
10:47 PM anniepoo: and I have an unopened bale
10:47 PM z64555: "Warning: contents under pressure"
10:47 PM anniepoo: yah, they should put a warning in there
10:49 PM theBear: not to mention the much smaller piles of it at any friends houses that i visited one or more times, the coating all over my car interior of it, the little chunks still stuck to all my fluffy socks and jackets, all the floor drain covers, etc etc, i mean, i'm into heavy duty psychadelics and have been for many years, things i suspect it's not fair to subject any mind to, ever, at all, and the amount of foam that came out of the thing blows my
10:49 PM theBear: mind more than anything i seen via those routes... blows my mind more than i can find the words to describe, heh
10:49 PM anniepoo: been thinking about making a TV pit for my apt.
10:50 PM anniepoo: I still find bits of it
10:50 PM anniepoo: fortunately it happened in the shop, where we have the vacuum system for woodworking
10:50 PM anniepoo: and compressed air
10:50 PM z64555: its the gift that keeps on giving
10:50 PM anniepoo: but I was REALLY sick of foam rubber by the time I got it cleaned up
10:50 PM theBear: z64555, i ian't real worried about that bit, i developed a couple of very effective techniques to kinda move it into piles or generally make it easy to get into bags that can be taken away, so you can finally vacuum the carpet you haven't seen for so long, you know, without the vacuum filling up in moments as it would if you tried to suck up the foam :)
10:50 PM z64555: should call it tribble floof
10:51 PM anniepoo: we had an old, cheap chinese milling machine
10:51 PM anniepoo: had been used for years to do one job in wood
10:52 PM anniepoo: so the ways hadn't moved
10:52 PM anniepoo: I took it apart to clean the wood out
10:52 PM anniepoo: and found bits of that foam in there
10:53 PM anniepoo: had to disassemble the gears on two lathes
10:53 PM anniepoo: brb, laser
10:54 PM theBear: z64555, maaan ! if you told me that a year or more ago, i coulda used the heck outta the term, woulda been one of my top 10 most used words for months at a time, but you give it to me now, probably less than 3figures worth of hours before it's all goneski ? c'mon maaaaaan
10:54 PM z64555: :D
10:54 PM z64555: it'll turn up again, I'm sure of it
10:57 PM anniepoo: tribble floof
10:58 PM anniepoo: no, tribble floof is probably closer to what my robot guy has on his head
10:58 PM anniepoo: Oooh!
10:58 PM anniepoo: ok, making these for physicist friends
10:58 PM anniepoo: wood balls, laser cut baseball cover shaped patches of fake fur
10:59 PM anniepoo: You can't comb the hair on a basketball
11:02 PM theBear: oh yeah i got sidetracked, i like the sound of the robot squishing pull-down-ey rod, and first thoughts are similar to already said, some kinda washer/widish-thingey hidden on top, or even maybe just a razor-thing slot beneath the top surface (made from outside/top) then a little wiggling and jiggling to slip similar "anchor" (thing wider than the rod to grip the head-dept) into the hole, somehow fixing it to mr rod, then either letting the hole
11:02 PM theBear: self-close, or if it matters ya know, doing something to seal up the slit where you slipping the anchor into the head-dept :)
11:03 PM * theBear would quite like to see a short video when the little guy is doing the thing this all leads to doing, after things are all ya know, sorted out
11:03 PM anniepoo: Ooh - yes, that's perfect
11:03 PM anniepoo: I'll do it in the back where it's less noticable - take an xacto, cut into center of head
11:04 PM * anniepoo will provide such video - he's being made for Playing with Prolog, our youtube channel
11:08 PM * theBear looks forward to it
11:08 PM * theBear is fond of most things with silly shocked looking hair on them, and has a soft spot for little puppet/cartooney kinda guys, almost any shape/style ones that he can think of right now
11:11 PM anniepoo: 8cD
11:13 PM patr0clus is now known as s3nd1v0g1us
11:14 PM * theBear is disappointed at the time of day it is, and the way that several pre-reported laptop something-or-other (no-brainer fix/fiddles) repairs are nowhere to be seen, along with the obligatory fizzy drinks or hot cooked-by-someone-else or similar treats, that arrive with such things these days
11:15 PM * theBear likes treats, specially home-delivered and not paid for outta the general bear errm, asset-pool, small as it is these days, liquid or otherwise
11:16 PM * Tom_L wonders why theBear is painting my screen pink
11:16 PM theBear: spose that's the def. of "treats" really, teh "you like them" bit
11:17 PM * theBear wonders why Tom_L mocks his defective glasballs by mentioning things like comprehending pink text, and suggests maybe it's because teh mention of foam got him all riled up, due to recent events
11:22 PM Tom_L: mmm futon snow
11:22 PM anniepoo: tribble floof
11:23 PM anniepoo: never let practicality interfere with a good definition
11:23 PM anniepoo: 8cD
11:44 PM anniepoo: 8cD lasering
11:56 PM anniepoo: ok, I tried slit in back of head, and it's impossible to find the rod in there
11:56 PM anniepoo: I thought of making a ball of gorilla tape and forcing that in
11:57 PM anniepoo: then came up with what I think will be a better idea
11:57 PM anniepoo: I made a barb
