12:10 AM orlock: anniepoo: i'd love a vac. chamber and a pressure chamber
12:13 AM orlock: my latest aquired tools are very boring though
12:13 AM orlock: 10" sliding mitre saw, and a 5 speed cheapy drill press
12:13 AM anniepoo: vac chamber - haunt thrift shop for a stainless steel stock pot
12:13 AM orlock: anniepoo: i think the same works for both vac. and pressure
12:13 AM anniepoo: well, for many uses being able to see into the vac chamber is very useful
12:13 AM orlock: yeah there is that
12:13 AM orlock: "have the bubbles popped"
12:13 AM anniepoo: and the cheapest way to get a pressure chamber is to buy a paint pot from harbor frieght
12:13 AM anniepoo: also, when vacuuming silicone, making sure it's not overtopping container
12:13 AM orlock: i wish i could buy from harbor frieght
12:13 AM orlock: without the parts actually having to be transported from a harbour somewhere
12:14 AM orlock: (they do not exist in australia)
12:15 AM anniepoo: no harbor freights just a chain of stores, they started in LA near the port, selling stuff that was confiscated by customs
12:17 AM orlock: Hah, nevver knew thats how it started
12:19 AM orlock: anniepoo: Suprised they let them? But i guess it was confiscated due to non payment of taxes or whateever?
12:19 AM orlock: not confiscation of devices for being metric or something
12:24 AM anniepoo: importing is a nightmare of duties and stuff
12:24 AM orlock: yup
12:24 AM anniepoo: sometimes importers go out of business or goods aren't worth the duty
12:27 AM anniepoo: paperwork gets fouled up and the charges mount up
12:27 AM anniepoo: the government ends up owning the googds ,they sell them at auction
12:27 AM anniepoo: the word corruption enters at some point
12:27 AM orlock: (and corrosion, if its literallly on the docks - yay saltwater)
12:27 AM orlock: yeah
12:27 AM orlock: the union here that dealt with that sort of stuff was basically a semi-polite way of calling somebbody a criminal
12:28 AM anniepoo: so, there's enough of this stuff that harbor freight opens their first store to sell stuff they buy at auctions
12:28 AM anniepoo: pretty soon they have several stores throughout california
12:28 AM anniepoo: and they can't buy enough of this stuff to fill the stores, so
12:29 AM anniepoo: they end up just importing
12:29 AM orlock: thats quite interesting, cheers
12:30 AM anniepoo: 8cD
12:30 AM anniepoo: ok, I'm bored with trying to rig snail in blender
12:31 AM anniepoo: and I'm emotionally ready for another bout of sanding
12:31 AM anniepoo: headed to shop
12:48 AM rue_house: how convienient for the government
12:48 AM rue_house: they can steal stuff legally
12:53 AM anniepoo: 8cD
12:54 AM anniepoo: if I wasn't so set up here, I'd be in Canada right now
12:54 AM anniepoo: (sure the same sorta stuff happens there)
01:02 AM rue_house: I wonder if 'trump' is a checkbox on the canadian paperwork for reasons of immigration
01:08 AM anniepoo: [ ] I wish to live in a democracy
06:59 AM pokmo: i'm hoping to spend the least effort in building something that presses a key to wake up my sleeping mac over wifi
07:00 AM pokmo: i guess a ESP8266. but what sort of motor that'd be the easiest?
07:00 AM pokmo: a servo?
07:00 AM veverak: ehmmm
07:00 AM veverak: wake on lan?
07:01 AM pokmo: veverak, but my mac isn't connected over ethernet
07:01 AM pokmo: it's connected over wifi
07:01 AM pokmo: i don't think i can wol over wifi
07:01 AM veverak: googling says it may be possible
07:04 AM pokmo: veverak, you sure?
07:04 AM pokmo: i guess i could connect a rpi to it over direct network
07:05 AM veverak: google says so
07:05 AM * veverak does not have mac
07:08 AM pokmo: hmm
07:09 AM pokmo: i think that assumes the router is an apple
07:10 AM deshipu: might not work if your internet is from Orange
07:13 AM veverak: pokmo: try
07:13 AM veverak: don't assume
07:13 AM pokmo: i have :(
07:13 AM veverak: hmm
07:13 AM pokmo: for hours
07:13 AM pokmo: that's why i resorted to this "robotic" approach
07:13 AM pokmo: maybe i'll just connect an rpi to it
07:14 AM veverak: makes sense
07:14 AM * veverak tries to avoid using wifi over laptop in general
07:14 AM veverak: so no experience
07:15 AM pokmo: veverak, why avoid?
07:15 AM veverak: pokmo: by my experience ethernet is much painless experience
07:15 AM veverak: :)
07:16 AM pokmo: fair enough
07:16 AM veverak: but hey
07:17 AM veverak: I live in country where there are usually 8 wifi networks around at least
07:17 AM veverak: the wireless is little bet "overcrowded"
08:52 AM rue_bed: haha, and they can buy anything they cant successfully import
08:52 AM rue_bed: ... scrollback, sorry
08:54 AM rue_bed: pokmo, have you not heard of magic packets?
08:54 AM rue_bed: for waking up sleepingcomputers
08:54 AM rue_bed: iirc, you broadcast the target mcahines mac address 16 times
08:58 AM robotustra: does anybody played with EEG?

12:24 PM anniepoo: it'd sure be nice if there were someplace you could type in name of 'stuff' and get told some commercial product whose largest component is it
12:25 PM anniepoo: like right now trying to remember what construction product basically is microspheres
12:25 PM SpeedEvil: anniepoo: microspheres
12:25 PM SpeedEvil: anniepoo: in that they are used in construction
12:25 PM SpeedEvil: Do you mean glass ones?
12:26 PM SpeedEvil: 3m sent me some samples of those. They are beautiful under the microscope - look just like bubbles
12:26 PM anniepoo: yes
12:26 PM anniepoo: they're used as fillers in plastics and fiberglassing
12:27 PM anniepoo: but they're expensive bought that way
12:27 PM anniepoo: there's some product at home depot that is just microspheres
12:27 PM SpeedEvil: hmm
12:27 PM anniepoo: and it's driving me crazy, can't remember what it is
12:27 PM SpeedEvil: you can often approach it sideways
12:27 PM SpeedEvil: go on alibaba, for example, and search on microspheres to find out what they say they're used on
12:27 PM anniepoo: lightweight spackling is acrylic medium loaded with microspheres, but I just want the microspheres
12:28 PM SpeedEvil: $1000/ton or so, minimum order a ton, and you do the freight.
12:28 PM SpeedEvil: I guess you want under a ton though :)
12:29 PM anniepoo: 8cD yah, don't need a ton of them
12:30 PM SpeedEvil: You could always get a microscope and take up glassblowing.
12:30 PM SpeedEvil: :)
12:30 PM anniepoo: 8cD ebay - lots of people selling htem cheap
12:32 PM anniepoo: lol - seller makes it REAL CLEAR not to open the package with a razor blade
12:32 PM anniepoo: I bought a bunch of shredded foam rubber for a project
12:32 PM anniepoo: not having much experience with it, I figured 75 lbs should do it
12:33 PM anniepoo: came as 3 hay bale sized bales, wrapped in plastic
12:33 PM anniepoo: I take a box cutter and cut open one of the bales
12:34 PM anniepoo: aaaagh! - shtarts shooting out like a fountain - it's a blizzard inside the shop!
12:34 PM anniepoo: the plastic rips where I cut it, and blows up in this huge cloud of foam rubber bits!
12:35 PM anniepoo: now I've got a huge pile of fluffy bits of stuff
12:35 PM SpeedEvil: :)
12:35 PM SpeedEvil: I remember similar warnings for live fish
12:35 PM anniepoo: I go get 3 of those enormous trash cans, and spend a LOT of time getting it into them
12:35 PM anniepoo: the lids on the cans have big "DO NOT OPEN" signs on them
12:36 PM SpeedEvil: http://i.imgur.com/6xLBbZC.gif - could be worse
12:36 PM SpeedEvil: (worksafe)
12:37 PM anniepoo: LOL
12:38 PM anniepoo: I bought a defective can of 'great stuff' expanding urethane foam once. pressed the trigger, and apparently broke the valve -
12:39 PM anniepoo: best part of that gif is the guy in background, who turns away as if this happens every day
12:47 PM SpeedEvil: I'm not sure if cans of that with nondefective valves exist
12:47 PM SpeedEvil: that is - if you don't use it all at once at least

01:38 PM weyland|yutani: anniepoo, once i broke a can or urethane foame inside my truck
01:40 PM anniepoo: =8cO
01:41 PM anniepoo: my dad was a building contractor. We owned a tract of land my parents were trying to develop
01:41 PM anniepoo: they were building a house right next to ours.
01:42 PM anniepoo: the ready mix truck backed up too far, the wall gave way, and the truck slid in
01:42 PM anniepoo: They hauled the truck out, but they just moved the house over
01:43 PM anniepoo: did you ever get it out of your truck?
01:43 PM weyland|yutani: that was nit the problem...but all my tools and stuff...
01:44 PM weyland|yutani: everything was encased in foam
01:50 PM SpeedEvil: oops
02:01 PM anniepoo: cool alternative I've seen for making curved surfaces - coat bubble wrap with expanding urethane foam and
02:02 PM anniepoo: s/and/taped/
02:02 PM weyland|yutani: pics?
02:02 PM anniepoo: in place on form. when it dries peel off bubble wrap
02:02 PM anniepoo: pics of?
02:03 PM weyland|yutani: the woman you made of bubblewrap and urethane foam ;P
02:03 PM anniepoo: what?
02:07 PM SpeedEvil: I like the stuff that comes in tins, not cans.
