[00:00:26] <RustyShackleford> this ikea standing desk is great
[00:00:32] <RustyShackleford> except I have to crank it
[00:00:49] <Snert> ahhhh yes. You need a lifting column.
[00:00:56] <RustyShackleford> I'm thinking a drill, an adapter, and a n arduino
[00:01:12] <RustyShackleford> or something like that. a lower tech option is just a drill
[00:01:32] <RustyShackleford> might be cool to have an led display with the height, in inches. Or preset
[00:01:36] <RustyShackleford> *presets
[00:01:53] <Snert> put 2 of these under your desk
[00:01:58] <Snert> http://www.diytrade.com/china/pd/6936011/FRT07_lifting_column_for_TV_lifts_and_adjustable_table_in_office.html
[00:04:24] <RustyShackleford> I wish I had found this before I bought my desk
[00:04:39] <Snert> it should sense you when you walk in and just move to correct height as you approach.
[00:05:04] <RustyShackleford> anyway, where could I find some metal hexagonal rod?
[00:05:16] <RustyShackleford> looks like 8mm
[00:05:43] <RustyShackleford> if I had a rod I could slide into the crank mechanism, I could just use my power drill
[00:05:52] <RustyShackleford> less permanent solution
[00:46:42] <Snert> take a metric bolt with an 8mm head on it.
[00:47:02] <Snert> turn the bolt around and shove the hex head into the thingee.
[00:47:11] <Snert> drive it with a drill.
[01:02:07] <RustyShackleford> Snert, problem is that the crank has a handle bent into it
[01:02:45] <RustyShackleford> looks something like this: ----|__
[01:02:58] <RustyShackleford> I need a straight piece if I'm going to put a drill on it
[01:08:15] <Snert> get a long bolt with an 8mm head. bend it.
[01:09:47] <Snert> given no context this is just shooting in the dark.
[01:10:27] <Snert> by the time you pay shipping on a piece of hex stock you might as welll just buy a jack handle or whatever it is.
[01:27:06] <RustyShackleford> its 6mm actually. but seriously, more expensive than 95 bucks?
[01:28:40] <Snert> maybe I just havent seen a metal stockyard ship via US postal service.
[01:28:49] <RustyShackleford> https://youtu.be/62hi92hMjjU?t=2m31s
[01:29:16] <RustyShackleford> there's a 3 second demo of the handle if that helps
[01:29:32] <Snert> oh. that. I see.
[01:29:53] <Snert> I still say long 6mm bolts...maybe welded together.
[01:30:35] <RustyShackleford> yeah its not like I can go to home depot
[01:30:47] <RustyShackleford> and get some 6mm stock
[01:31:03] <RustyShackleford> there's one shop I might take a look at, they have all kinds of motors and gears and junk
[01:31:29] <RustyShackleford> I remember seeing aluminum, brass, and whatever round rod
[01:34:11] <Snert> if you can remove the old one take it with you
[01:36:42] <RustyShackleford> oh my 6mm socket
[01:36:44] <RustyShackleford> *or
[01:38:02] <RustyShackleford> there's enough length to cut it but I don't want to make a change that permantent just yet
[01:38:12] <RustyShackleford> maybe I can order a replacement handle for cheap from Ikea
[01:39:26] <Jak_o_Shadows> That does seem like it'd be quite easy to make automatic
[01:39:35] * Jak_o_Shadows also has the exact same level/tape measure
[01:39:54] <Jak_o_Shadows> Could you just cut off a bit of it? Like, You'd only need 150mm for it
[01:40:34] <RustyShackleford> well i'm thinking cut off the bent handle part
[01:40:40] <RustyShackleford> and use the straight part
[01:40:49] <RustyShackleford> but then there's no turning back
[01:41:35] <Jak_o_Shadows> What about cutting the other end?
[01:41:40] <Snert> ummmm, well, it could be welded back together but I see hwat ya mean
[01:46:02] <RustyShackleford> Jak_o_Shadows, I mean, I couldn't get a long enough piece. The handle needs to remain in one peice for this to work
[01:46:11] <RustyShackleford> I think my best bet is to call ikea
[01:46:22] <RustyShackleford> maybe I can claim it was bent and get it for free hah
[01:46:49] <Jak_o_Shadows> I think I'm picturing a drill motor under the table
[01:46:57] <RustyShackleford> yep
[01:47:09] <Jak_o_Shadows> Why do you need a long section?
[01:47:10] <RustyShackleford> and an arduino for preset heights perhaps
[01:47:39] <RustyShackleford> true. a short bolt would work
[01:48:08] <RustyShackleford> there isn't much clearance
[01:48:25] <RustyShackleford> the table top and that rod are about 1/2" apart
[01:48:51] <RustyShackleford> or 1.27 cm for you metric users
[01:49:38] <RustyShackleford> i'll have to raise the top up on some 2x4's or something
[01:50:08] <Jak_o_Shadows> ah
[01:50:42] <RustyShackleford> or just stop being a lazy bastard and change the height by hand
[11:34:06] <Snert_> do you want a desk that sounds like a drill?
[18:33:54] <z64555> hm, I could wrap a thin copper wire around the cables before soldering
[18:33:59] <z64555> that might work
[18:52:13] <anonnumberanon> Just clamp them together. This is a hard solder.
[18:52:19] <anonnumberanon> Use crocodile clamps.
[19:24:31] <TitiRoboticsNoob> Hey guys, completely new here! I'm really eager to learn robotics but have no idea where to start. I was thinking about buying the mindstorms EV3 kit. What's your opinion ?
[19:34:48] <Tom_itx> tear apart an old copier for parts and get busy
[19:36:08] <TitiRoboticsNoob> you mean a copying machine ?
[19:36:55] <Tom_itx> uh huh
[19:37:32] <TitiRoboticsNoob> alright will do, i've one that's been out for 3 years
[19:38:26] <TitiRoboticsNoob> but are there that many components in a copier ?
[19:45:23] <Tom_itx> enough to get started
[19:57:51] <TitiRoboticsNoob> alright thank you man! :)
