Back
[00:01:03] <DagoRed> Not a clue. I would just experiment.
[00:02:23] <goppo> hmm
[00:02:39] <DagoRed> I wouldn't use nylon screws.
[00:02:56] <goppo> sure. i was thinking of metal screws
[00:03:06] <goppo> but i fear metal tapping screws would crack the nylon
[00:03:16] <DagoRed> Yeah. That'll work
[00:03:26] <DagoRed> Predrill and bolt in.
[00:04:08] <goppo> i do that with wood, but plastic would crack, right?
[00:05:01] <Wetmelon> washers
[00:05:07] <Wetmelon> nylon washers
[00:05:26] <goppo> Wetmelon: but wouldn't tapping a screw into nylon crack it as well?
[00:05:46] <Wetmelon> I thought you meant what DagoRed said, drilling & bolting.
[00:05:48] <Wetmelon> Other option: rivets
[00:06:32] <goppo> Wetmelon: well, yeah that too. i haven't had good experiences drilling into plastic
[00:06:33] <DagoRed> goppo: tapping is more likely to cause a split.
[00:06:40] <goppo> but they weren't nylon
[00:07:02] <Wetmelon> There's a lot of types of nylon, the one I've worked with would have no problem taking small threads (M3x.50, #4-40 etc)
[00:07:10] <Wetmelon> It's not like acrylic
[00:07:13] <goppo> i'm trying to avoid using a nut because of space concerns
[00:07:23] <orlock> I just put the tap in a drill
[00:07:29] <goppo> there won't be enough room for a nut to stick out :(
[00:07:37] <orlock> pre-drill then tap a hole
[00:07:59] <orlock> this was using nylon chopping boards
[00:08:07] <orlock> also, you can heat things up and embed them
[00:08:14] <goppo> true
[00:08:27] <orlock> work is having a sumo bot compitition
[00:08:30] <goppo> nylon plays nicely with machining
[00:08:34] <orlock> thinking about reviving my old bots
[00:09:23] <goppo> Wetmelon: so you just predrill a little and tap in a M3?
[00:09:51] <orlock> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzNB6d9iry4
[00:09:53] <Wetmelon> Yep, but I've actually found that a predrill and then a self-tap can work just as well. Experiment
[00:11:13] <Wetmelon> orlock: Don't do what I did and end up with a shitty drivetrain lol. I had a really neat bot that would track its target with a ping sensor and use an IMU + PID loop to guide it in on target, but the worm gear drivetrain never quite worked right :(
[00:11:37] <orlock> Wetmelon: trex motor driver and a pair of cordless drill motors
[00:11:55] <Wetmelon> Oh jeez, we were restricted to VEX parts and AA batteries (school) :(
[00:12:08] <orlock> 3kg weight limit
[00:12:10] <orlock> autonomous
[00:12:58] <Wetmelon> LOL I love it
[00:13:10] <Wetmelon> I love the bot that just drove off the side
[00:16:33] <goppo> Wetmelon: should i predrill just a few mm or go all the length of the screw?
[00:17:12] <Wetmelon> Why would you only go partway through?
[00:17:58] <goppo> Wetmelon: well, just to let the screw sit on the nylon
[00:18:09] <Wetmelon> orlock: This was our competition https://youtu.be/XalZYxPSc1Q
[00:19:09] <Wetmelon> My bot's not in there sadly :(
[00:23:22] <pokmo> is it typically the case to predrill 1mm smaller than the screw?
[00:23:38] <pokmo> if M4's used, predrill 3mm?
[00:28:48] <Wetmelon> pokmo: Look up the tap-drill chart and use the correct one. http://www.littlemachineshop.com/reference/tapdrillsizes.pdf for example
[00:32:50] <pokmo> ah right
[00:42:41] <MrCurious> realsense R200 + Intel NUC NUC5CPYH ... fun times
[07:49:46] <goppo> is nylon-nylon supposed to have a lower friction coefficient than nylon-brass?
[07:50:24] <Tom_itx> teflon is better
[10:07:32] <goppo> Tom_itx, how about teflon-nylon? would that be better than nylon-nylon?
[10:28:23] <deshipu> you won't get below 0 anyways ;)
[20:05:10] <MrCurious> new office chair from last night.. comfort++ compared to broken one. the tape fixed it for ONEday
[20:36:45] <Wetmelon> nice.
