15:03 Snert_ What is SSI? With the subject of rotary encoders in mind. Some industrial automation protocol?
15:04 Snert_ anyone know what it stands for?
15:06 SpeedEvil just google SSI encoder
15:19 Snert_ says that SSI is a widely used serial protocol that I have never ever seen used in 30 years.
15:20 Snert_ it must be specific to the building/automation world.
15:21 Snert_ looks like that will work very well for an absolute position gray code encoder.
15:31 Snert_ maybe it's a protocol not much in use anymore.
15:31 Snert_ so I hate to spend bucks going down the path of obsolescence.
15:33 SpeedEvil why on earth would you want a specific protocol?
15:33 SpeedEvil If you don't have to attach it to specific equeipment
15:34 Snert_ the encoder speak SSI.
15:35 Snert_ I'm researching rotary gray code encoders and trying to get up2speed.
15:35 Snert_ I have no idea what the protocols are not ancient and what is commonly in use these days.
15:35 Snert_ I just know that a candidate encoder of current vintage speaks SSI.
15:36 Snert_ and SSI seems to be a buzzword in use much if the subject is gray code encoders.
15:41 rue_mohr Snert, encoders?
15:41 rue_mohr sensors or decoders
15:42 rue_mohr everyone just takes the signals raw
15:42 rue_mohr less those ones on a mouse that you have to send a pulse and they send back 1 pulse for forward and 2 pulses for reverse
15:43 rue_mohr but those would only ever be usefull on something like a crap mouse that can lose counts all over the place and will only result in people throwing it away
15:46 SpeedEvil Snert_: how is there any research whatsoever involved.
15:46 SpeedEvil You look at vendors of encoders, and see what they sell
15:46 Snert_ finding out what's available.
15:46 Snert_ how big they are ... and such.
15:46 Snert_ and finding out how to mate it to an arduino or galileo.
15:47 SpeedEvil 'proper' gray code encoders are going to typically be over a thousand dollars
15:47 Snert_ edison would be my preferrable avenue, in the end.
15:47 Snert_ I see many from $40.00 to about 150.00 ...all the way up.
15:47 SpeedEvil There is no benefit at all over quadrature unless you absolutely cannot do one rev to get a position.
15:48 Snert_ I'll take the benefits of not having to rehome or use a reference signal after a power outage.
15:48 Snert_ if I can have that for $150- 200.00 then so be it.
