#robotics Calendar

00:00 Tom_itx that one i linked has an adhesive back
00:01 Tom_itx has special 3M adhesive backing to attach to oil pans, hydraulic reservoirs, diesel fuel tanks or any flat metal surface.
00:01 rue_shop3 armyofevilrobots, I have one you can borrow, 24A total 12V output
00:02 armyofevilrobots Nah, it's OK.
00:02 Tom_itx no thermostat on it though
00:03 armyofevilrobots I am having good luck with what I have right now (green tape, then a drop of weldbond glue, then splash it all with methyl hydrate, wipe it around til it disappears to a very thin film, let dry 15 minutes, no adhesion problems after that, but you need to replace the tape every print).
00:03 armyofevilrobots It's too much of a hassle to change out the PSU twice. I am lazy. :)
00:04 rue_shop3 power supply
00:04 rue_shop3 I have a bunch of nice server power supplies
00:04 rue_shop3 for 1U servers
00:04 rue_shop3 its taken me 3 yeras to use 1
00:05 rue_shop3 heh, your off in space :)
00:05 armyofevilrobots They can be unstable if you don't draw from the 5v as well. I have had problems with desktop ones.
00:05 rue_shop3 its a server one
00:05 myofevilrobots still suspici
00:05 rue_shop3 its running mine
00:06 rue_shop3 the total of the 5V load is the 4 stepper drivers
00:06 rue_shop3 and the steppers are running on the 12V
00:06 rue_shop3 oh, and 1 power led
00:06 Tom_itx bump the steppers up to 24v dude
00:06 rue_shop3 DPS-250LB
00:08 rue_shop3 http://www.ebay.ca/itm/DELTA-SERVER-POWER-SUPPLY-A47071-006-DPS-250LB-A-/130557294603
00:08 rue_shop3 its that one armyofevilrobots
00:08 rue_shop3 ...
00:08 rue_shop3 maybe I should sell them on ebay instead?
00:08 rue_shop3 Tom_itx, armyofevilrobots is as bad as me on irc...
00:09 Tom_itx how so?
00:09 Tom_itx just dissappears?
00:09 rue_shop3 he's not paying nearly enough attention... :)
00:09 rue_shop3 he's prolly untangling his cnc
00:10 Tom_itx you weren't nearly this chipper about reprap a week ago :D
00:10 armyofevilrobots nah, I have multiple desktop screens, so I keep jumping around.
00:10 rue_shop3 it missed me off!
00:10 rue_shop3 http://www.ebay.ca/itm/DELTA-SERVER-POWER-SUPPLY-A47071-006-DPS-250LB-A-/130557294603
00:10 rue_shop3 thats it
00:11 Tom_itx armyofevilrobots, how many?
00:11 Tom_itx i got 4...
00:11 rue_shop3 oho oh oh my print finished
00:11 rue_shop3 haha
00:11 armyofevilrobots @tom_itx; three real screens, but I have 6 virtual desktops so I keep swapping between. 1 is browser and comms, 2 is terminals, 3 is vim and repl, 4 is files/media/office, 5 is virtual machines and remote desktop, and 6 is email.
00:12 rue_shop3 talk about off in space
00:12 armyofevilrobots but I left for a couple of minutes to check on the print.
00:12 Tom_itx one dude left his laser cutter for a sec to check his cad and came back to his house on fire
00:13 rue_shop3 hahah the scaling is out
00:13 rue_shop3 hahaha this thing dosn't fit!
00:14 rue_shop3 I went thru hell to save this print...
00:14 scaregoat what's a good place to buy small plastic gears? like this one http://i.imgur.com/JIVT9Wq.png. 8 teeth, 1.9mm bore, 5mm OD, 5mm tall
00:14 rue_shop3 scaregoat, china
00:14 rue_shop3 $7 / bag
00:15 rue_shop3 http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Crabs-Kingdom-DIY-model-gearboxes-plastic-motor-gear-package-69-kinds-2-pack-lot-robot-accessories/1796876854.html
00:15 Tom_itx that's not a gear
00:15 rue_shop3 scaregoat, damnit, now its 4
00:15 Tom_itx maybe a pulley of some sort but no gear mesh there
00:15 armyofevilrobots Haha. Beat me to it.
00:15 rue_shop3 I paid an extra freaking $3
00:15 armyofevilrobots http://www.aliexpress.com/item/50-Pcs-5mm-x-2mm-8-Teeth-Plastic-Gear-Wheel-Cog-for-DIY-Toy-Car-Motor/32218732219.html
00:16 Miki Which printers do you all have?
00:16 Miki 3D printers.
00:16 Tom_itx glad you clarified that
00:17 rue_shop3 I have a mendel i2
00:17 scaregoat rue_shop3, looking through description, it doesn't have an 8T 1.9 or even 2mm unfortunately. Not a bad price though
00:17 rue_shop3 arg, I'm gonna hit this with the sand blaster to de-string it
00:18 Tom_itx stock drive products
00:18 Tom_itx sdp-si.com
00:18 rue_shop3 scaregoat, and for that price you cant make the parts work?
00:18 Tom_itx you need to know what you got
00:18 Tom_itx rue said he'd print you one
00:18 rue_shop3 http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:172715/#files
00:18 rue_shop3 IT SAYS ITS FOR AN I2
00:18 rue_shop3 ARG
00:19 Tom_itx you didn't check the cad file?
00:19 scaregoat armyofevilrobots, that looks like about spot on. Thanks for the help guys
00:20 Miki Been really interested in trying to make a biped... Though that may be too complex for a first project.
00:21 rue_shop3 ohyea, no strings left on that puppy
00:21 rue_shop3 Tom_itx, its only a stl
00:21 Tom_itx solidworks loads stl
00:21 rue_shop3 it says i2, so I figured it'd just work
00:21 rue_shop3 oooh
00:21 rue_shop3 wait
00:21 Tom_itx you can dimension it
00:21 rue_shop3 haaa
00:21 rue_shop3 the parts I got have minor scale issues
00:21 rue_shop3 I wonder if my printers parts are out
00:27 rue_shop3 I fixed it, I dont want to print antoher one
00:28 rue_shop3 167145 and 172715
00:28 rue_shop3 that was 172715
00:28 armyofevilrobots What are those numbers for?^
00:28 rue_shop3 thingiverse parts
00:28 Tom_itx thingie numbers
00:28 armyofevilrobots ah, nm, thingiverse.
00:29 Tom_itx plan on seeing alot of those numbers now that rue_shop3 has a printer
00:29 rue_shop3 http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:167145
00:29 armyofevilrobots That holder is wayyy too much effort and plastic.
00:29 rue_shop3 I wonder if it'll fit now
00:29 rue_shop3 yea, its damn near solid
00:29 armyofevilrobots That's 8mm or 5/16 threaded rod on top. It's begging for a pair of bearings each rod.
00:30 rue_shop3 anyhow, I learned that i2 parts from thingiverse may not fit
00:30 armyofevilrobots ie: https://www.flickr.com/photos/rantenki/8785711713/
00:31 rue_shop3 yea, but I dont want to have to take it apart
00:31 rue_shop3 :/
00:31 armyofevilrobots Haha. That's my excuse!
00:31 rue_shop3 if that fits, it'll drop on
00:31 rue_shop3 if it dosn't...
00:31 rue_shop3 my headache will get worse
00:31 m_itx looks at all rue_shop3's cut n nut sitting on the shelf rusting away
00:32 armyofevilrobots awww yeah, this is happening: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:212276
00:32 rue_shop3 huh
00:32 armyofevilrobots I am going to print those for xmas.
00:33 Tom_itx wtf is it?
00:34 armyofevilrobots xmas crackers. YOu pull on them and it breaks in half, and a toy is printed inside.
00:34 rue_shop3 you drop it in during the print?
00:35 Tom_itx it's probably part of the print silly
00:35 armyofevilrobots No, It prints inside.
00:35 rue_shop3 pregnent penguin style?
00:35 rue_shop3 hmm
00:35 armyofevilrobots Although I have done the other style too. Yeah.
00:35 rue_shop3 oh my that thing is huge
00:35 rue_shop3 (spool holder)
00:36 Tom_itx make one from plexi
00:36 Tom_itx or threaded rod
00:36 rue_shop3 it looks like it could hold an 80 lb spool
00:36 rue_shop3 hmm
00:36 rue_shop3 I need to do test prints tho
00:36 rue_shop3 work out bugs
00:36 rue_shop3 I also figure this filament is not as good as if it were new, so I dont mind using it up
00:39 Tom_itx you know you could mount bearings on those supports with washers on each side and it would work just as well
00:40 rue_shop3 your not understanding, then I'd have to take it apart
00:40 rue_shop3 its a pain in the ass to do
00:40 Tom_itx what else have you to do?
00:40 rue_shop3 because there are about 12 nuts on the rod that all have to come off, and go back in the right spot
00:41 rue_shop3 on the same rod
00:41 Tom_itx i see maybe 6
00:41 Tom_itx total
00:41 rue_shop3 6 is evil enough
00:41 rue_shop3 I need to test print...
00:42 Tom_itx i need to sleep
00:42 rue_shop3 damn, slicer cant scale x, y, z seperate
00:42 rue_shop3 Tom_itx, gnight... :)
00:42 rue_shop3 thanks for the support
00:42 Tom_itx go eat some spagetti... it will remind you of filament
00:42 rue_shop3 oooh foood, damn
00:42 rue_shop3 ...
00:43 Tom_itx i wonder if i can buy din rail locally...
00:43 Tom_itx i have a piece but can't find it
00:43 rue_shop3 1 inch sounds small
00:44 Tom_itx it was standard size for the mounts i'll get
00:45 rue_shop3 srsly? 3m of filament for that?
00:47 Tom_itx 8961K15
00:47 Tom_itx http://www.mcmaster.com/#din-rails/=us9eip
00:47 Tom_itx yeah it's 35mm
00:48 Tom_itx probably 25 on the flat
00:50 Tom_itx does the extruder have a counter on it?
00:50 Tom_itx mount an encoder on the extruder so you can keep track of your useage
00:50 rue_shop3 hahah yea, my extruder has 2 holes in it
00:50 rue_shop3 its tells you how much its gonna use
00:51 Tom_itx i know but you can see how accurate it is
00:51 rue_shop3 the only thing I get to know about the spool is how many kg are on it
00:51 rue_shop3 hmm
00:51 Tom_itx a simple encoder would tell you how much you use
00:52 RifRaf you really get sick of trying to counts how much you use, just have rolls on hand and be prepared to use a few kg a month
00:53 rue_shop3 RifRaf, I have 2 0.34 holes in my head!
00:53 rue_shop3 I
00:53 RifRaf yes very clever :)
00:53 rue_shop3 will make a new one
00:53 Tom_itx kinda like real printers where they give you the printer and sell you the ink?
00:53 rue_shop3 hah yea
00:53 RifRaf yep, its a consumable and you end up with lots of it
00:53 RifRaf unless you like everything in 1 colour
00:53 RifRaf that gets boring quick
00:55 Tom_itx do you store it with silica gel packs?
00:56 rue_shop3 there is one in the bag
00:56 rue_shop3 pla is worse re moisture
00:56 rue_shop3 I think abs isn't a problem
00:56 rue_shop3 ?
00:57 Tom_itx ok, it's bed thirty here...
01:09 rue_shop3 ok, make new head...
01:26 rue_shop3 oh damn
01:26 rue_shop3 it crashed in the middle of a print
01:27 rue_shop3 marlin crashed
01:27 rue_shop3 wtf
01:27 rue_shop3 armyofevilrobots, help, what do I do
01:29 rue_shop3 damn I have to start again
01:34 rue_shop3 ok the arduino now has a power adapter, no more usb power for it...
02:18 rue_shop3 damnit, thats 1 bit
02:20 rue_shop3 screw it
02:20 rue_shop3 solder melts at 200-something, right?
02:28 rue_shop3 fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff
02:54 rue_shop3 orlock, I'd like you to know that your idea of making a D drill from a peice of .5mm spring steel worked, I have a 0.5mm bit
02:55 rue_shop3 and the #80 carbide can go to hell
03:02 rue_more let it be the bane of the souls down there
03:02 rue_more an eternity of trying to drill a #80 hole thru .5mm of brass
03:03 rue_more given a workpeice that lines up different every time you try to peck
03:03 rue_more and with 12 broken off bits in it from previous attempts
03:43 ShH sighs at rue_
03:43 GuShH use your lathe.
03:43 GuShH align that tailstock already
05:11 rue_shop2 I dont understand you are thinking how brittle a #80 carbide is, and if you cant feel it and or feed slow it just breaks off
05:11 rue_shop2 now is it 3am
05:11 rue_shop2 I'm gonna cad!
05:11 rue_shop2 make a 5x7 protoboard holder
05:12 rue_shop2 I'm printing something over there
05:18 GuShH rue_shop2: yes you can
05:24 rue_shop2 how do I translate a cube in scad?
05:25 rue_shop2 its not
05:29 ShH eyer
05:33 rue_shop2 it disn't matter where I put the translate
05:33 rue_shop2 difference() {
05:33 rue_shop2 cube([50, 90,7], center=true); // main block
05:33 rue_shop2 cube([52, 72, 1.4], center =true); // board
05:33 rue_shop2 translate([25,0,0]);
05:33 rue_shop2 cube([52, 67,5],center=true); // circuit
05:33 rue_shop2 translate([-25,0,0]);
05:33 rue_shop2 }
05:33 rue_shop2 everything is centered
05:35 rue_shop2 oh
05:35 rue_shop2 semicolon
06:14 rue_shop3 there I cahnged the .34 dual hole to a .4 1 hole nozzel
07:21 rue_shop3 rfi
07:21 rue_shop3 RifRaf,
07:22 rue_shop3 its 5am, I can tell this printer is gonna be bad for me
07:29 SquirrelCZECH 5am?
07:29 uirrelCZECH got 1
07:31 rue_shop2 5am here
07:31 rue_shop2 I bed now
07:43 rue_bed I designed and am printing pcb holders
07:43 rue_bed :)
07:44 SquirrelCZECH pics?
07:44 rue_bed SLEEP
07:44 rue_bed remember 5am
07:44 rue_bed :23 now
07:44 rue_bed ugh
07:44 rue_bed why cant I just have a sleep button like a computer
07:45 rue_bed I have to be carefull I'm gonna think myself up a spool holder that isn't printed
08:27 Tom_itx rue_shop2 a #80 bit works the same as any other bit with proper feeds and speeds
08:27 Tom_itx and btw.... why aren't you up yet!!!
08:29 Tom_itx rue_bed!!!! WAKE UP DAMMIT!!! the sun is rising in the east!!!
13:12 rue_bed rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
13:15 m_itx watches the sun set in the wes
13:31 rue_bed its finished by 4pm
15:41 rue_shop3 armyofevilrobots, did you get the dxf?
15:51 Tom_itx rue_shop3!
15:51 Tom_itx welcome back to life
18:24 rue_shop3 wuf, busy day
18:24 rue_shop3 I have more circuit board clamps than circuit baords now
18:26 RifRaf i have a surplus of pink elephants
18:27 rue_shop3 hahah
18:27 rue_shop3 of random scale factors?
18:28 RifRaf nope all identical twins
18:28 rue_shop3 oh
18:28 rue_shop3 randomized sizes would gang nicer
18:28 RifRaf bit of acetone and they will make a quick xmas gift though
18:28 rue_shop3 ah
18:29 rue_shop3 I break when I stay up till 5am
18:29 rue_shop3 my head hurts
18:30 rue_shop3 RifRaf, the spool holder print failed twice, I lost the arduino connection
18:30 rue_shop3 have any problems like that?
18:30 RifRaf yep
18:30 RifRaf you got about 10 things to try yesterday
18:30 rue_shop3 any known causes?
18:31 rue_shop3 I know the power is ok
18:31 RifRaf everyone gave you at least one solution
18:31 rue_shop3 sorta
18:31 RifRaf lead too long, flakey connection, new cable, windows
18:31 rue_shop3 I'm betting its a memory leak
18:31 RifRaf i moved to sd card due to failed prints after about 14 hours
18:31 RifRaf its you
18:31 rue_shop3 oh
18:32 rue_shop3 maybe thats why people like the sd cards
18:32 rue_shop3 I have 3 adapters comming
18:32 RifRaf but have done successful 30 hour prints via usb
18:32 rue_shop3 can you spool onto an sd card from pronterface over the usb?
18:32 RifRaf yep
18:32 rue_shop3 cool, so you dont have to run the card back and forth
18:32 RifRaf but i just move the sd card as i normally stick the printers into another room whendoing that
18:33 rue_shop3 oh
18:33 rue_shop3 hmm
18:33 RifRaf running the card takes 30 seconds, the print takes 24 hours, so no big deal
18:33 rue_shop3 yea
18:33 rue_shop3 had a chap using the lathe
18:33 rue_shop3 kinda lost my day...
18:33 rue_shop3 I did reprap things tho
18:34 rue_shop3 RifRaf, I'm on the .5 bit
18:34 rue_shop3 last night last thing I made a .4mm
18:35 RifRaf yeah 0.5 is usable, still never used one though
18:35 rue_shop3 0.5 worked quite well
18:35 rue_shop3 whats yours?
18:36 rue_shop3 hmm, I need a lens holder
18:36 RifRaf 0.3 now, did use 0.35 for a few months
18:36 rue_shop3 hmm
18:37 rue_shop3 I noticed quite a slowdown from the 1mm
18:37 rue_shop3 you can really travel with that thing
18:37 rue_shop3 at some point I need to redo marlin
18:37 rue_shop3 put all the numerbs I know now into it
18:38 rue_shop3 few more fixups on this machine and time to start some kits for ebay, pay this thing off a bit
18:39 rue_shop3 see if I can get its net to $20
18:42 RifRaf printing kits already, you got hopes :)
18:43 RifRaf pla parts so they warp for others like yours?
18:43 Tom_itx but you'd send me one right? :)
18:46 rue_shop3 I'm not sure whats pla and abs on this kit, I think its mostly abs
18:47 rue_shop3 Tom_itx, you thinking you want to get into it?
18:50 atom1 i doubt it
20:48 GuShH rue_shop3: acetone will let you know which filament is which
20:49 Tom_itx so will fire
20:50 GuShH smoke a chunk of filament and you'll know for sure!
20:59 rue_shop3 oh yea
21:00 rue_shop3 I should make those stupid wire strap anchors
21:01 GuShH hilarious how much most people spend on a printer, just to make shit they can buy at the dollar store
21:01 GuShH consumers in general.
21:02 GuShH their first dilusional idea is that they'll be able to manufacture parts... then they realize it can hardly be used to prototype with --- IF you babysit it, then they lose interest and it ends up in a closet.
21:02 GuShH 90%
21:02 GuShH or, an on-off deal for years.
21:05 GuShH what, freedom of speech...
21:35 rue_shop2 my xy scale was off by almost 3%
22:17 rue_shop3 if I run a high freq thru a coil on the back of a mirror, do you think I can get the eddy currents in the mirror film to do heating?
22:21 armyofevilrobots https://www.dropbox.com/s/d4gs0up3g1zv5m0/bridginglikeboss.jpg?dl=0
23:14 rue_shop3 RifRaf, have you ever tried using the multi extruder to put an optical pipe in something?
23:14 rue_shop3 a gargoyle with glowing eyes or the like?
23:15 rue_shop3 armyofevilrobots, its pretty heavy, what is it?
23:15 Tom_itx rue_shop3,
23:15 rue_shop3 armyofevilrobots, or is that a bridge and your showing off :)
23:15 Tom_itx run out of PLA yet?
23:15 rue_shop3 Tom_itx, ?
23:15 rue_shop3 hell no
23:15 rue_shop3 I got 2kg when I bought the parts
23:15 Tom_itx run out of weekend time yet?
23:15 armyofevilrobots @ rue_shop3; Showing off :)
23:16 rue_shop3 but I'm thinking I should order a roll of ABS
23:16 armyofevilrobots The bridge worked out amazingly well.
23:16 rue_shop3 hah
23:16 rue_shop3 wow
23:16 Jak_o_Shadows1 I went straight to ABS
23:16 Jak_o_Shadows1 I can deal with a little warping
23:16 armyofevilrobots There was actually a tiny bit of sag. I need to add a better (well, any) fan duct, and also lower the bridging extrusion multiplier a touch (it's 75% now).
23:16 rue_shop3 I have a new bed in the sand blaster with the silicone over the heater setting
23:17 armyofevilrobots but a little sag was like a half a millimeter,so it was pretty good :)
23:17 rue_shop3 I was impressed by a 9cm bridge mine did today
23:17 rue_shop3 but honestly I think it was cheating somehow
23:18 Tom_itx i learned about wiki tonight
23:18 rue_shop3 I just switched to my translucent green ink
23:18 Tom_itx never done one before
23:18 rue_shop3 you set one up?
23:18 Tom_itx yes
23:19 Tom_itx well, i edited one
23:19 rue_shop3 heh, ahh
23:19 Tom_itx added a couple pages
23:19 rue_shop3 good stuff
23:20 rue_shop3 part of the problem is seeing if its there tommorow or if a crazy moderator erased it all caseu he dosnt' like anyone writing on his wiki
23:20 rue_shop3 :)
23:20 Tom_itx they won't
23:20 rue_shop3 good stuff
23:20 Tom_itx i should have saved the last page though
23:20 rue_shop3 armyofevilrobots, 15 minutes ago I ran out of painters tape
23:20 Tom_itx actually i think i will
23:20 armyofevilrobots Yeah, you have to buy in packs.
23:21 armyofevilrobots or have a heated bed.
23:21 rue_shop3 the heated bed should be ready by tuesday
23:21 rue_shop3 about 100W
23:21 rue_shop3 oh drat, I dont have a temp sensor for it
23:21 rue_shop3 PT100 isn't an option yet is it?
23:22 Tom_itx make it be
23:22 rue_shop3 I'v tried modifying that table before
23:22 rue_shop3 nobody knows how it works or what the values that go into the formula mean
23:24 RifRaf rue_shop3, could be possible
23:24 rue_shop3 RifRaf, if you have a chance to try it I'd love to know if it works
23:24 armyofevilrobots @ rue_shop3 There is a tool to generate it.
23:25 rue_shop3 yea, nobody knows what the numbers you put in mean
23:25 RifRaf am waiting for a decent object to do in multicolour
23:25 RifRaf wanna make me one?
23:25 rue_shop3 hah
23:25 rue_shop3 want a 5cmx7cm pcb holding bracket?
23:25 RifRaf nope :)
23:25 RifRaf learn blender
23:25 rue_shop3 its the most complex thing I'v made
23:25 orlock RifRaf: butterflies!
23:25 Tom_itx rue_shop3, i tried editing the same tables and i'm not sure if i got it or not
