03:12 orlock managed to find a pair of 6 way 2mm pitch header sockets on a random bit of crap i had collected
03:13 orlock now i just need to find a matching cable
03:13 orlock hmm
13:08 rue_house ok, begin.holiday();
13:08 rue_house er
13:08 rue_house vaccation.begin();
15:25 rue_house damn
15:26 rue_house the brake line on the truck went had to take the truck to the shop and walk home
15:57 RustyShackleford I'm not really an electronics guy, but I'd like to build a safe cracker
15:58 RustyShackleford I'm thinking I could control a stepper motor with either an arduino or a raspberry pi
16:02 rue_house brute force?
16:02 rue_house wonder what the angular resolution of the average safe locks tumblers are
16:02 rue_house I know cheap locks you can be out a number and a half either way
16:04 rue_house I need ideas on how the shop can be making money by existing
16:04 rue_house must be something it can make or be doing
16:05 RustyShackleford rue_house, yeah brute force. I know that on like a combo lock, 1-3 is the same, for example
16:05 deshipu protection money for not burning down the neighbourhood?
16:05 RustyShackleford i'd probably try every single number though, since I don't know how precise this lock is
16:05 rue_house 1c every 2 minutes would do
16:06 RustyShackleford does it matter whether I use arduino, rpi, or something else?
16:06 deshipu not really
16:06 RustyShackleford also, choosing the stepper motor. I need to make sure it will have enough torque
16:06 rue_house RustyShackleford, if you are determined you will secceed
16:06 deshipu except for overkill factor
16:06 RustyShackleford I'm not sure how to measure the torque required to spin this lock
16:06 rue_house for the average stepper motor, none
16:07 deshipu get a 10cm lever attached to it and hang weights on it until it spins
16:07 deshipu then divide the weight you got by 10
16:09 RustyShackleford also wondering: do stepper motors have a very consistent step? And where the heck can I find gears so that I can spin the lock at specified intervals
16:13 rue_house RustyShackleford, look them up on wikipedia,
16:13 rue_house they have a fixed internal cog that determines the step size and position
16:14 rue_house RustyShackleford, you could direct drive the dial on a combo lock
16:14 rue_house dont need gears
16:14 RustyShackleford rue_house, well thats if it has the same number of steps as my combo log
16:15 RustyShackleford *lock
16:15 rue_house the stepper motor has more
16:15 rue_house especially with microstepping
16:15 rue_house there are usually at least 400 steps/rev
16:16 rue_house 1c every 2 mins
16:16 rue_house hmmm
16:17 rue_house maybe if I grew something
16:21 rue_house hmm, pot?
16:21 rue_house naaa, everyones doing that
16:22 deshipu how about killer robots terrorizing the city?
16:22 rue_house nono
16:22 rue_house I'm looking for something to make the shop pay for itself
16:23 rue_house which is about 1c every 2 minutes
16:23 deshipu arduino workshops for hipster art students?
16:23 rue_house that I dont ahve to be tied up in to happen
16:24 deshipu perpetuum mobile?
16:24 rue_house soemthing that makes the shop just make the money sitting there
16:24 rue_house maybe a cookie machine?
16:24 deshipu stock market bots?
16:25 rue_house I ahve a machine that can do really complex, pricise chemical mixing
16:25 deshipu the surest way to make easy money
16:26 rue_house it can be soemthing that takes a really long time
16:26 deshipu is to sell to people some thing or service that they think will get them easy money
16:27 rue_house to my knowledge prettymuch every has what they need, so whats left is to sell them what they dont need
16:31 deshipu create the need
16:31 deshipu how about a 3d printing shop?
16:31 deshipu it's much hyped
16:33 rue_house yea I need to finish my 3d printer
16:33 rue_house see if figurines are still worth what they were
16:36 deshipu just let them choose from several things from thingiverse
16:36 deshipu like a vending machine
16:36 deshipu you can change the menu periodically
16:37 rue_house when you tell people "just come back tommorow" most of them dont
16:37 deshipu no, they would sit there and watch it being made
16:37 rue_house the world is instant gratification, your lucky if the person still wants something 1 minute after they've bought it
16:37 deshipu the things would be small
16:37 deshipu and the machine fully automated
16:38 rue_house "Gimme your money!, Here's your thing!, NO RETAIL BOX!!!"
16:38 deshipu well, a vending machine
16:38 deshipu so you put the money in first
16:39 rue_house hahah I wonder if a venting machine would make money, put money in and it will listen to your complaints for up to 2 minutes
16:39 deshipu as far as you are concerned, they can leave then
16:39 rue_house (population here is pretty old)
16:40 deshipu no grandchildren?
16:40 rue_house the community is designed to not keep anyone between 1 and 40 here
16:41 rue_house we have the second highest average age in canada
16:43 rue_house getting pretty cold in here, I should run up the boiler
16:44 deshipu hmm
16:44 deshipu canada
16:44 deshipu how about an automated moose hunting robot?
16:45 deshipu or you could just plant some maple trees...
16:47 rue_house I think office bamboo plants sell for about $200 ea
16:48 Tom_itx is that gonna be your christmas tree this year?
16:48 rue_house na
16:48 rue_house I'll go up to the pwoer lines and cut down another one
16:49 rue_house the one I got last year was pretty nice, trimming the steel cables off the top was a bit hard as they have a mean steel core, but it all worked out
16:49 Tom_itx you should have warned those trees they were doomed from the start
16:49 Tom_itx maybe the seed would have blown somewhere else
16:50 rue_house the insulators made nice candle holders
16:50 rue_house :)
16:51 Tom_itx no wonder you loose power so often
16:51 rue_house gee I'm tired
16:52 rue_house I'm gonna stay up all night, so for now I'll get some sleep
16:52 rue_house the tea didn't work
16:56 Tom_itx i had a long day
16:56 Tom_itx parts should be here tomorrow
18:46 rue_house the brakes on my truck broke
18:46 rue_house it occurs to me that brake fluid shouldnt be brown
18:46 rue_house and that if it is, a line is prolly rusted thru
18:46 rue_house or close
18:46 orlock they broke so they no longer break?
18:46 orlock brake
18:47 rue_house correct
18:47 rue_house the breaking broke
18:47 rue_house I been looking at the usi i2c code for avrs
18:47 rue_house I'm not impressed
18:48 rue_house its depressing
18:48 rue_house it could use compression
18:48 rue_house oh and I got a new compressor last weekend
18:50 orlock one of those thigns i want but have no pressing use for
18:53 orlock i want to get some 2mm pitch pcb socket plugs
18:53 orlock i found PCB mount sockets on a bit of junk, just need the cables/headers
18:54 orlock might even just solder wires straight onto the pcb headers and break it out to 2.54mm somehow
19:02 Tom_itx rue_house front or rear?
19:02 Tom_itx brakes...
20:33 RifRaf afternoon
20:35 ace4016 aloha
20:35 RifRaf have left the city for now, hopefully can make stuff again
20:42 ace4016 left it for good?
20:47 RifRaf who knows, i did like alot up there
23:17 rue_house rear
23:17 rue_house the main line to the back gave right behind the gas tank
23:17 rue_house and my lathe broke
23:17 rue_house I was dialing back the cross slide and it jammed
23:18 rue_house something in the nut
23:18 rue_house I got it going but there is still a problem at the end of it that causes it to sieze up a lot
23:18 rue_house its a 1.5mm pitch 60 degree thread, its not acme!
23:18 rue_house left hand tho
