00:26 MrCurious soon we can abduct him and his mom
00:30 rue_shop2 heh
07:19 SquirrelCZECH recently I was curious
07:20 SquirrelCZECH If I have robot where I control right/left side of the robot to move ( tank-style rover)
07:20 SquirrelCZECH isn't it a bit tricky to go straight when going on higher speeds?
08:48 Skwint interesting question, SquirrelCZECH
08:49 Skwint but no worse than a stearing wheel I suspect - either way you end up making lots of micro-corrections over time?
08:56 delkin What is the state of the art regarding long range, low power transmitters? Is there a device out there capable of sending few bytes per minute of data across 30Km, from the middle of the forest to an urban centre?
09:01 chris_99 i imagine you'd need a lot of power for that
09:04 Skwint mobile phone?
09:04 chris_99 mobile phones don't transmit 30km afaik
09:04 Skwint they connect to a world wide network from most places, even forests
09:04 Skwint and then transmit data 3000 km if you want
09:05 delkin I think mobile phones are quite dependent on the cell anttenas that are spread over the urbanized areas every few Km far
09:05 Skwint anyway, if mobile phones aren't appropriate to what delkin wants, the reason might help narrow down the problem space :p
09:05 chris_99 mmm, delkin
09:05 delkin I was thinking about sending data from the middle of a forest
09:06 delkin few bytes per minute
09:06 chris_99 actually i could be wrong
09:06 chris_99 on wiki it says ' GSM is limited to 35 km, with 70 km being possible with special equipment ' dunno what that refers to though
09:06 Skwint well, if you really are out of range of mobile reception, your cheap alternative is radio
09:06 delkin and capable of working during a year like a watch
09:07 Skwint but I'd be inclined to use 3G and just shutdown for long period between broadcasts
09:07 delkin is this what I'm proposing utopic? Low power (like a watch) and far distances (10-30 Km)?
09:07 delkin I see
09:08 Skwint power consumption as low as a watch is a challenge
09:08 Skwint but definitely possible
09:08 Skwint you could look at what tech they use for tagging animals in the wild and tracking them
09:08 chris_99 unless you have a gigantic portable antenna, such as a wire tethered to a balloon ;)
09:11 delkin Skwint: Good idea
09:12 chris_99 yeah thats a good plan, i've got a feeling the guys who find the animals have quite a large directional antenna though
09:12 delkin In terms of space I would perfectly be able to add 30 watch batteries to the system. Space is not a big problem so long it remains of the size of a 30x30x30cm box
09:12 Skwint A wire tethered to a baloon? what the hell? "such as a sub-air density aerial device supporting a metal alloy signal amplifying system"
09:13 Skwint a large directional antenna might not be an issue, since it is the thing in the forest which is awkward - sticking antenna on a roof to listen to them is a simpler issue
09:17 chris_99 that was a joke heh, although i've picked up balloons from near space before which is around 30km, and they used 10mW (although they do have line of sight ;)
09:17 delkin Skwint: Eventually if that could bring down the power consumption both receiver and transceiver could have directional antennas
09:19 delkin Do you know of companies that produce these components for amateurs (low budgets) - directional antennas, long lasting batteries, and those transceivers? (I will have a look on those animal tracking systems)
09:21 Skwint ah, no, sorry - not my area
09:23 Skwint there seem to be so many remote weather stations that google offers "shop for" as a search term, so you could see what they are using too if tagging doesn't work out
10:28 SquirrelCZECH Skwint: I suppose so :)
13:02 MrCurious GuShH: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Stepper-motor-controller-instrument-lathe-handwheel-treaxial-xc6083/1021679164.html
13:06 deshipu haha, even the display is in chinese :)
13:08 MrCurious i would HOPE that is configurable
13:08 MrCurious but then again is having to learn 30 or 40 chinese characters such a terrible price to pay
13:08 Tom_itx no, you're expected to learn chinese
13:11 deshipu chinese has future definitely
13:11 deshipu plus, it's an interesting language to learn
13:16 MrCurious damnit. figured it would go to over time, stepped away, and they scored a clincher
22:09 rue_mohr2 yay! 90% of the yard is back in one peice
22:09 orlock rue_mohr2: I braved the cold outside and broke out the soldering iron for the first time in 6 months, yay!
22:22 rue_mohr2 :)
23:09 GuShH rue_mohr2: check it out 2mm threads! http://gushh.net/tmp/dscn5744f.jpg
23:12 GuShH the grooving tool, upside down http://gushh.net/tmp/dscn5751f.jpg
23:57 rue_mohr2 nice
23:57 rue_mohr2 whats the fitting for?
23:57 rue_mohr2 drill bit rod?
