01:27 orlock and heres me thinking i might go and do some work in the shed
03:43 Tom_itx orlock, i've had good luck with his boards
14:38 julby0 I have a toy robot arm. I want to know how the arm maintains position when no power is supplied to the motors. They are not stepper motors. I took it apart, and there's a motor in a case with a bunch of gears. I can't easily turn the gear by hand, it only turns in any direction when power is supplied. how is this accomplished? Sorry if this is not a good explanation
14:53 Hyratel it is a good question.
14:55 julby0 someone in #electronics said it's a "gearhead motor" so i'm googling that now
14:58 julby0 okay, so maybe it's because you can drive a "regular" gear with a worm gear but not vice versa?
14:58 Hyratel yep
14:58 Hyratel worm gears cannot be backdriven
14:58 julby0 that is pretty damn cool
14:58 julby0 thanks
18:42 Guest26146 rue_bed: hardware store grab bags are fun.. you get to play with faulty screws! http://gushh.net/tmp/dscn5661f.jpg (notice the faulty one?) there's actually two like that (the other is unthreaded just a round shaft)
