00:00 MrCurious (at a good price)
00:00 orlock I'm looking at making an order from dealsextreme
00:00 orlock any suggestions
00:00 orlock (Obviously not the mill/lathe kit!)
00:37 GuShh_Lap MrCurious: make 'em?
00:37 GuShh_Lap orlock: not really, sorry
00:37 MrCurious with what, my magical bevel gear forming butt cheeks?
00:38 GuShh_Lap formed gears?
00:38 GuShh_Lap woot
00:38 GuShh_Lap depends on the material
00:38 MrCurious hardened steel please
00:38 GuShh_Lap also you were working on a cnc router... assumed you also wanted a 4th axis
00:38 GuShh_Lap with which you can cut gears
00:38 GuShh_Lap among other things
00:46 GuShh_Lap Hyratel: http://gushh.net/tmp/dscn5595f.jpg 24UNF thread done, need to shorten it though (always best to have room to spare!) not the best finish but who cares. It's 4140 steel.
00:47 GuShh_Lap it machines nicely but it's rather hard
00:47 Hyratel what's this for anyway
00:47 GuShh_Lap a straight arbor for a drill chuck
00:47 Hyratel oh yeah
00:47 GuShh_Lap 24UNF is common on cheap small drill chucks
00:47 GuShh_Lap otherwise they're tapered.
00:48 GuShh_Lap I think bigger are 28UNF and so on.
00:48 Shh_Lap doesn't like imperial s
00:49 GuShh_Lap the marring is just what I was getting prior to a few modifications to the lathe, I turned the blank a long time ago, only recently got to finish it. isn't that the case with most things? :(
01:45 GuShh_Lap uh-oh... 0.01mm off from arbor to chuck body (which is great!) but then... 0.12mm off on chucked bit, I guess these cheap drill chucks really do suck.
01:45 GuShh_Lap it's consistently bad throughout it's size range.
01:47 GuShh_Lap lesson: don't even bother with china chucks
01:48 orlock GuShh_Lap: So this is a no-no?
01:48 orlock http://www.dx.com/p/6-in-1-motorized-mini-cnc-machine-jig-saw-grinder-driller-metal-lathe-wood-lathe-168051
01:49 GuShh_Lap the internal thread is susprisingly concentric, I got 0.01mm off (could be 0.02 or 0.01 more or less) but the really important aspect of the chuck sucks.. these numbers are after I subtracted the 3 jaw chuck runout, so that's not playing a role.
01:49 GuShh_Lap orlock: that's a UNIMAT clone
01:50 GuShh_Lap there's nothing professional about it, it's the lathe I wanted when I was 5
01:50 GuShh_Lap it is a fun toy though
01:50 GuShh_Lap I could have bought it many times already but I know it's just a toy, even though I always wanted it...
01:51 GuShh_Lap orlock: what's the use you intend to give it?
01:51 GuShh_Lap tiny cnc conversion?
01:51 GuShh_Lap for that I would say sherline or similar, but they cost too much for what they are (total ripoff)
01:53 orlock GuShh_Lap: just playing really - maybe making some toys
01:53 orlock GuShh_Lap: and i understand about the sherlines, etc. some of the Seig gear is a bit cheaper
01:53 GuShh_Lap I first saw the UNIMAT on a hobby faire and they had all sorts of cool metal stuff on display (made with the machine, in theory) but it turns out it would take you a whole afternoon to finish one tiny part
01:54 GuShh_Lap I would look into the siegs they are also toys but way better than the unimat, specially the clone stuff....
01:54 GuShh_Lap the little to no rigidity on that thing means you can't touch steel and you can barely machine aluminum
01:54 GuShh_Lap but with a lot of care you can do it...
01:54 orlock i could do better than that unimat clone by modifying a big vise i think
01:55 GuShh_Lap problem is most people using them have no machining knowledge
01:55 GuShh_Lap so they will complain it sucks.
01:55 lock waves his hand ar
01:55 orlock thats me!
01:55 orlock i have a dremel with the drill press mount and thats it heh
01:55 GuShh_Lap unimat had a full metal version
01:55 GuShh_Lap don't remember the model number...
01:55 GuShh_Lap 1 2 and 3 I think, maybe.
01:55 orlock yeah, i was looking at them a few months ago
01:56 orlock the price on dealsextreme is really expensive for a crap clone
01:56 GuShh_Lap http://www.jerry-howell.com/Maximat-7.jpg
01:56 GuShh_Lap that had a vertical milling head (the column you see)
01:56 GuShh_Lap it was actually useful.
01:56 GuShh_Lap http://www.glue-it.com/model-engineering/tools/lathes/unimat3/unimat3-lathe-002.jpg that's the one unimat3
01:57 GuShh_Lap "actually a lathe" I would say, compared to the other stuff. it's cool for tiny work, wish I had one.
01:57 GuShh_Lap (better than a chinese "mini lathe")
01:58 GuShh_Lap you can easily CNC those and use them to machine small precise parts
01:58 GuShh_Lap small being the key
01:58 GuShh_Lap orlock: I guess it's up to your budget and space
02:00 orlock got space, no money :-(
02:00 orlock going to splurge on a $50ish dealsextreme order tonight i think
02:01 orlock (have house, so space is not an issue, but money is)
02:01 GuShh_Lap hrm
02:01 GuShh_Lap well you kinda need both :(
02:02 orlock yeah
02:02 orlock i should make an afghan lathe
02:08 GuShh_Lap orlock: uh...
02:25 GuShh_Lap finished... but that chuck sucks http://gushh.net/tmp/dscn5600f.jpg
02:25 GuShh_Lap damn china.
02:41 rue_more ? straight shank chuck!?
03:32 GuShh_Lap rue_more: ya
03:32 GuShh_Lap well I installed a similar one but about 15 years older, also chinese but... the thread is a lot higher quality, and I got the runout to under a thou
03:32 GuShh_Lap heh, old stuff is always better.
03:33 GuShh_Lap I had to face the bottom and the front, but since it's soft steel no problem.
03:33 GuShh_Lap rue_more: straight are used with collets, on tool holders, etc.
03:33 GuShh_Lap a lot of tool holders for turret lathes are like that
03:34 GuShh_Lap in the near future I plan to make a longer shaft for another chuck, this time keyed so I can have a pulley to drive it with a motor, for nice precise 90° holes (mounted on the toolpost).
03:34 GuShh_Lap or well, any angle you set it to.
03:35 GuShh_Lap same size chuck but the older one went down to 1mm vs 1.5mm...
03:36 GuShh_Lap rue_more: they actually do sell these http://www.amazon.com/Straight-Shank-Threaded-Drill-Chuck/dp/B0007Q3G1M/ref=pd_sim_hi_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=08KAVZ1NCSNC4FMHX0HS
03:36 GuShh_Lap and that has a nice big flat face but do you trust it to be concentric...
03:37 GuShh_Lap http://www.amazon.com/Morse-Taper-Threaded-Drill-Chuck/dp/B0007Q756E/ref=pd_sim_hi_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=1KS99RBZJB0QFS0JYRMJ ha!
03:37 GuShh_Lap not sure why you'd want to use a threaded chuck with a more taper arbor
03:38 GuShh_Lap anyway I added a small shoulder so it registers with the inner hole in the chuck body, that's something the commercial ones don't have
03:41 GuShh_Lap rue_more: anyway my use for a straight shank is two fold, one non precision: to gain lower-size range on a bigger chuck, for more precision: to mount on a collet. playing with the tightness of the thread I got it to what looks like under a thou or so runout at the chucked end, I locktited it in place just to make sure.
03:42 GuShh_Lap not having that big diameter shoulder allows the chuck to be disassembled without removing the arbor.
09:08 GuShh_Lap rue_more: how much is 6 meters of 1 1/4" mild steel over there?
09:08 GuShh_Lap round rod
09:09 GuShh_Lap here it's about 50 bucks or so
09:09 GuShh_Lap I wonder whether to get various sizes and just stock up... because 6 meters is a lot and should last me forever
09:09 GuShh_Lap plan to cut down to 1 meter lengths
09:09 GuShh_Lap and just stock them on shelves.
09:10 GuShh_Lap 2" is way too expensive by comparison
09:10 GuShh_Lap and I would need help moving it
09:10 GuShh_Lap hot rolled though
09:10 GuShh_Lap cold rolled for smaller sizes
09:11 GuShh_Lap sucks to machine it, but it's the only cheap thing available
09:12 GuShh_Lap https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kt9LAN13dkw
09:44 rue_more GuShH, 20 feet would be about $18 I think
10:02 GuShH rue_more: inch and a quarter solid rod?
10:02 GuShH that's by the way 37.3KG
10:03 GuShH the 2" would be 95.4KG
10:06 GuShH are you sure the KG only costs 48 cents where you live? because that's something I would doubt!
14:05 password2 so , if i have a choice bout buying a small Mill or a small lathe , which should i get first?
14:06 SlaveToTheSauce_ depends on what you want to make
14:06 password2 things
14:06 SlaveToTheSauce_ personally i am looking at a mill with a 4th axis which would allow for many lathey things
14:07 password2 well i sometime do chain maille
14:10 password2 mmm , if i get a mill i will be able to do pcb boards
14:11 password2 i wonder how the running costs compares
14:15 password2 it looks i will have to go with a lathe , simple because its available
14:16 password2 now i just need to find $600 somewhere
14:17 GuShH SlaveToTheSauce_: many pseudo lathey things...
14:17 GuShH and highly dependent on your conversion
14:17 GuShH password2: which lathe / mill
14:17 password2 http://www.adendorff.co.za/ProductDetails.aspx?id=466
14:18 GuShH a lathe is a lathe... a mill is a mill, you can mill on a lathe and you can lathe on a mill, doesn't mean it's ideal
14:18 GuShH I cut, mill, etc. on the lathe, but that's simply because I'm waiting to get a zx45 or better
14:18 GuShH password2: way too expensive IMO
14:18 GuShH but I guess you pay premium prices like I do
14:18 GuShH no choice.
14:19 GuShH 22KG????
14:19 password2 GuShH, unfortunatly i dont have access to cheaper ones
14:19 GuShH is it made out of air
14:19 GuShH no power feed?
14:19 password2 well its small
14:19 GuShH what exactly did you want to do?
14:19 password2 power feed , like thread cutting?
14:19 GuShH try and find one with at least X power feed
14:20 password2 lathe things *_*
14:20 GuShH not just threads, lathing in general
14:20 GuShH otherwise hand fed won't give you nice results, no matter how good you get at it you can't compete with gears!
14:21 password2 i thought that one has power feed , mmm , maybe i got confuzed
14:21 GuShH well the leadscrew has a handle on the right
14:21 GuShH that usually indicates no feed
14:21 password2 power feed is minimum
14:21 GuShH it's important unless you plan to CNC it
14:22 ShH doesn't know what "things"
14:22 password2 on the left is a nob
14:22 GuShH there's no info like the change gears etc
14:22 password2 according to manual its "Cutting feed power or manual"
14:22 GuShH what's the model number... the manual
14:23 GuShH oh there
14:23 password2 elathe 140
14:23 GuShH looked at the used market yet?
14:23 password2 yeah
14:23 GuShH 19KG net weight but 350W motor... sounds wrong
14:23 password2 its pretty dead
14:24 password2 well , i won't buy the thing without seeing it first
14:24 GuShH yeah it has basic feed
14:24 password2 and i knida trust adendorff
14:24 GuShH they don't have the mini lathe they sell in the US?
14:25 password2 nope
14:25 GuShH packing list -> change gear
14:25 password2 i can get sieg one propably , but it feels risky
14:25 GuShH 20, 25, 28, 30, 32 .. doesn't say if they're plastic, iron, hardened steel..
14:25 GuShH but yeah it has a banjo
14:25 GuShH you can do basic threading and feeds :)
14:25 GuShH page 13
14:25 GuShH part 3
14:26 GuShH that's the banjo.
14:26 GuShH ask how much the replacement belts are
14:26 GuShH and a drill chuck with the right arbor for the tailstock
14:26 password2 i wonder if i will even get it
14:26 GuShH MT1 arbor
14:27 GuShH 0-6mm chuck would suit but 1-10mm is also appropriate
14:27 GuShH J33 or so
14:27 GuShH although J33 is too big for those sizes... maybe something smaller, whatever is available :p
14:27 GuShH then you need HSS bits
14:28 password2 one qeustion bout HSS bits , how do i shape them , do i need a special grinder wheel for it?
14:28 GuShH password2: about 300 in extras to really get started I would say
14:28 GuShH no, the regular wheels work fine.
14:28 GuShH it's carbide you need special wheels for.
14:28 GuShH avoid carbide, there's no point in that lathe to use carbide whatsoever.
14:28 password2 ah ok
14:29 GuShH http://gushh.net/tmp/dscn5589f.jpg
14:29 GuShH ground that one yesterday, 60° threading tool
14:29 GuShH also ok-ish for chamfers
14:29 GuShH unless you want 45... or some other angle
14:29 GuShH but then you just rotate the toolpost
14:30 GuShH password2: bench grinder.. mine is 400W or so, not big
14:30 password2 my internet is really a crapfest
14:30 password2 my dad has a 200W one
14:30 password2 :P
14:30 Hyratel hey GuShH , lacking access to layout dye, you said sharpies to find the high spots?
14:31 Hyratel and how would I take down the high spots
14:32 password2 i think i can get my dad to buy bits for me
14:34 password2 that is a neatly ground bit
14:35 password2 my gfs mom has a huge bench grinder , >>1kw , it scares the crap out of me
14:37 GuShH Hyratel: no
14:37 GuShH Hyratel: what are you doing?
14:37 GuShH you can't transfer with sharpie, that's why I ask :P
14:37 GuShH password2: nice, three phase?
14:38 GuShH I'd like a big one...
14:38 password2 yes
14:38 GuShH on a pedestal
14:38 GuShH but to use outside
14:38 password2 yes
14:38 GuShH because the dust is terrible.
14:38 GuShH I need to make a pedestal for mine so I can take it outside easily
14:38 GuShH I try to grind as little as possible
14:38 GuShH 200W is plenty for small bits
14:38 password2 probably 45cm wheel on it
14:39 GuShH that half inch cobalt bit took a while on mine... I ended up covered in dust.
14:39 password2 takes like 5 min to stop , first time i thought i broke the switch somehow
14:39 GuShH on that lathe you would use 1/4" or so tops, I use 1" for regular stuff and smaller for threading and other non intensive operations
14:39 GuShH where a big bit doesn't make sense
14:40 GuShH lol yeah, I wonder if it's mounted on bushings (like mine is) or bearings
14:40 password2 dunno
14:40 GuShH the problem with the cheap ones are the rests
14:40 GuShH they are virtually useless
14:41 GuShH I need to make solid ones for mine, the stamped steel rests it came with are complete crap
14:41 GuShH you set the angle, lock them... and they move about on their own
14:41 GuShH they flex etc
14:41 GuShH good grinders had cast iron toolrests
14:41 GuShH half inch thick or better!
14:41 ShH wishes to score one some
14:42 password2 dammit I see an add for second hand lathe for $250 but the seller is 700km from me
14:42 GuShH ouch
14:42 GuShH ask if he's willing to send it haha
14:42 password2 haha
14:42 password2 let me quote the whole add , to show how much effort he put in
14:42 GuShH hmmm single flute endmills.... odd, I wonder if they're useful for anything other than foam and such
14:43 password2 Hobby steel lathe on stand, 400mm between centers, 150mm swing
14:43 GuShH >_<
14:43 password2 thats the add
14:43 GuShH well it's an OK size at least
14:43 GuShH but he's missing all the important data heh
14:44 password2 most of the time people does not even include the size , they just say "lathe for sale , metal , price neg"
14:45 GuShH you have to ask for pics and details
14:45 GuShH maybe they don't know what they have
14:45 GuShH and you can have a great machine for little money
14:45 password2 yeah then you contact them and its a 6m beast
14:45 GuShH you know.. owner dies, they don't know what it's worth or what to do with it
14:45 GuShH usually sold as-is with all the tools
14:45 GuShH which is awesome.
14:46 GuShH https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYKm9fzA1D8
14:47 Hyratel GuShH, trying to true up one of those Harbor Freight drilling vises
14:47 Hyratel it's a two axis adjustable
14:48 password2 mmmm , http://www.gumtree.co.za/a-other-electronics/other/precision-lathe-bench-sw350-3-phase/1001138573480910272432109
14:48 GuShH well you can't transfer without prussian blue but..
14:48 Hyratel any suggestions for improving the acme screw to vise jaw connection? It's just a grub screw
14:48 GuShH you can use any dye (sharpie, cheap spray paint, etc) to cover the surface and scratch the dye off with emery cloth on a flat surface
14:48 password2 $580 for that one
14:48 GuShH they're all like that
14:49 GuShH with lots of slop
14:49 Hyratel I mean, is there a way to improve the seat/fit iwthout major tooling
14:50 password2 damn , if this was one month in the future i would have considered buying that lathe
14:50 password2 but its 3ph
14:50 password2 *phase
14:51 GuShH vfd
14:51 password2 mmm
14:53 GuShH Hyratel: not that I can see
14:53 GuShH but that's not a big issue
14:53 Hyratel mmk
14:53 GuShH the rest of the thing is :p
14:53 Hyratel right
14:54 Hyratel what would I do about the faces where you can't turn them over on top of a true surface? (ie most of them)
14:54 Hyratel http://www.harborfreight.com/6-inch-cross-slide-vise-32997.html
14:54 GuShH thick glass or marble surface, some fine grit sandpaper, wet. move the dyed part in circles a few times, turn around to see how flat it is, based on your reference surface.
14:54 GuShH Hyratel: depends
14:55 Hyratel don't have a True surface though. and the only face that I could turn over afaict is the bottom most slide
14:55 GuShH you can try to use a blank hss bit or a proper precision parallel as your reference, but usually just fit the mating parts together and rub them to see the contact points
14:55 Hyratel mmk
14:55 Hyratel afk a bit
14:55 GuShH scrubbing is also doable at home...
14:55 GuShH err scraping
14:55 GuShH you can make a scraper out of an old file but meh.
14:56 GuShH (the idea is to scrape off the high spots, repeat the dye contact process, scrape some more, etc)
14:56 GuShH until parts converge
14:56 GuShH password2: that's a very nice small lathe
14:57 password2 if that shenwad is in working condition it would be a fun project to restore it
14:57 GuShH seems to have some accessories
14:57 GuShH maybe a taper attachment, the tailstock chuck... nice
14:57 GuShH it looks in good condition heh
14:57 GuShH it has the steady rest too
14:57 GuShH (which you'll rarely need)
14:57 password2 yeah
14:57 GuShH camlock tailstock
14:57 GuShH nice.
14:57 GuShH and norton gearbox it seems, at least "half" norton like mine
14:58 GuShH that is worth looking into.
14:58 GuShH the motor you can always change or use a vfd
14:58 GuShH usually if you are running it all day long 3 phase makes sense
14:58 password2 i just dl'ed the brochure for it
14:58 GuShH they also run quiet, aside from being more efficient
14:58 ShH would buy that on a heartbeat if the price was r
14:59 GuShH it's asian but it's old asian, which is better than the new stuff.
14:59 password2 610mm between centers
14:59 GuShH plenty good
14:59 password2 GuShH, the price is $580
14:59 GuShH looks like it might have power feed in both directions
14:59 GuShH or a clutch
15:00 password2 1HP motor
15:00 GuShH plenty enough
15:01 password2 kinda small aint it?
15:01 GuShH no it's right for the size
15:01 password2 ah
15:01 password2 i have spare new 1.1kW motors
15:01 GuShH you get a lot of power on the low gears
15:01 password2 single phase
15:01 password2 true
15:01 GuShH you need to match the shaft diameter, key and speed
15:01 GuShH unless you don't mind having different speeds than it shows on the graph
15:01 password2 yeah
15:02 GuShH :p
15:02 GuShH mine is due a 3 phase conversion with a vfd
15:02 GuShH but I don't want to spend the money on that yet
15:02 password2 well , one can always make a new plate
15:03 password2 yeah a vfd would pretty much give infinite speeds
15:03 GuShH with reduced torque
15:03 password2 choice*
15:03 GuShH unless the motor is designed for vfd operation
15:03 password2 yeah
15:04 password2 so you basically have the ability to adjust power output
15:04 password2 true
15:05 password2 metric threads and 40 imperial ones , i am starting to like this thing
15:07 GuShH :)
15:07 password2 i wonder what my dad would thing
15:07 password2 *think
15:10 GuShH heh
15:10 GuShH he might want to use it
15:10 GuShH see how much a milling vise costs for a lathe over there
15:10 password2 i hope so
15:10 GuShH and a 90° plate
15:11 GuShH those two things allow you to do basic milling
15:11 password2 mmm
15:11 password2 how does that work , does it attach to the tail or something ?
15:12 GuShH instead of the toolpost
15:12 GuShH you mount the vise
15:12 password2 ah
15:12 GuShH and the 90 plate goes to the faceplate, for accurate 90° holes and such
15:12 GuShH faceplate mounts instead of the 3 or 4 jaw chuck on the headstock
15:12 GuShH allows to use dogs to drag parts between centers, etc.
15:12 GuShH or just clamp the work in various ways
15:12 GuShH (parts you couldn't hold on a regular chuck otherwise)
15:13 GuShH say a small 2 stroke engine cylinder
15:14 password2 ah ok
15:15 Hyratel GuShH, I can see some of the high spots where the factory grease pooled
15:15 Hyratel capilary pooling
15:16 Hyratel how would I use a file as a spotting tool?
15:16 Hyratel I'm not even sure the footplate is true
15:16 Hyratel my shop has a poured concrete floor which may or may not be True
15:18 password2 get a metal ruler , they are normally pretty true , and use it on its edge
15:19 GuShH Hyratel: you need to take an old file, grind it to the right angles
15:19 GuShH your floor is not true :p
15:19 GuShH find some thick glass... some granite countertop... or buy an old surface plate!
15:19 Hyratel well I just wondered which was more un-true
15:19 GuShH everything sucks but precision cast iron surface plates and granite surface plates!
15:20 GuShH which if they're certified they cost a fortune.
15:20 GuShH specially the big ones
15:20 Hyratel all I have is some old window glass (3/16" thick and only about 5 inches across)
15:20 GuShH however for this purpose glass is good enough
15:20 GuShH :(
15:20 Hyratel I doubt i could set it down gently enough not to crack the glass
15:20 GuShH that is too thin
15:21 GuShH flexes a lot, so it can't serve as a reference
15:21 GuShH (makeshift reference, we're not going to the moon)
15:21 GuShH I need to get a chunk of granite...
15:22 Hyratel a metal ruler is probably the best I'm likely to have
15:22 Hyratel or actually
15:22 GuShH not very useful :/
15:22 Hyratel the foot plate on my belt sander it probbaly pretty True
15:22 Hyratel but that doesn't help much here
15:23 GuShH nah it's most likely cast iron and deformed!
15:23 Hyratel nope, stainless steel plate
15:23 GuShH aww, even worse
15:23 Hyratel boo
15:23 Hyratel probably better than the floor :P
15:23 GuShH yeah none of those surfaces are good for this
15:23 Hyratel I am not set up for heavy metalwork by any stretch
15:23 GuShH you would just be copying their flaws
15:23 Hyratel oak desk?
15:24 GuShH nope
15:24 Hyratel top is an inch thick
15:24 Hyratel it'd still be an improvement
15:24 GuShH glass can work because it's floated and usually quite flat
15:24 GuShH also cheap
15:24 password2 heres another add which fails , it says small 650cm lathe" , lol
15:24 Hyratel so basically, i an't got the necessary gear
15:25 Hyratel 6.5 meter lath?
15:25 Hyratel dang
15:25 Hyratel ;P
15:25 Hyratel so.. what /can/ i do with this peice of junk?
15:25 Hyratel it was got on clearance so I can't return it
15:25 password2 jip , and only $300
15:27 password2 i heard Myford lathes are decent
15:27 password2 but i geuss most older lathes are good
15:30 Hyratel GuShH, I'd offer to ship it to you and pay for your time but the shipping would probably be more than a decent one of same paper-spec
15:31 Hyratel also, the jaw slide rail was held in by a bolt hammered in as if it was a cotterpin
15:31 password2 anyway peeps , I'm out. thx for all the advice
15:34 GuShH haha it's cheaper to buy a KURT vise
15:34 GuShH maybe they meant 650mm
15:35 GuShH no way a 6.5meter lathe would cost 300
15:35 GuShH not even the bed alone!
15:35 GuShH bolt... hammered in..? hahahaha
15:35 GuShH WHAT IS THIS THING WHY WONT IT FIT <hammer time>
15:35 Hyratel I started turning it with a visegrip and it didn't back out... and then i twisted while pulling and it came out in fits and starts
15:37 GuShH well... a nice thick chunk o glass would be a good thing to have, of course, with rounded edges.
15:37 GuShH I have plenty tempered glass from shelves I'm not using anymore :/
15:38 GuShH flat enough for non precision small stuff like that
15:38 Hyratel http://www.use-enco.com/1/1/86779-gibraltar-cross-slide-vise-work-positioners-levelers.html
15:39 GuShH that tiny vise I serviced is serving it's function at least, but it's still crap compared to a real one.
15:39 Hyratel Close Enough TM?
15:39 GuShH good enough for a drill press I would say
15:40 GuShH I complain about my drillpress, but I watched a video of a guy using his... it was shaking like michael j fox.
15:41 ShH makes the list for the steel supp
15:42 GuShH too bad the minimum size is 6M (20 feet)
15:48 ShH is making yo
15:48 GuShH Hyratel: is that thing really 150 to 200 bucks?
15:48 GuShH what a ripoff dare I say.
15:49 Hyratel http://www.harborfreight.com/6-inch-cross-slide-vise-32997.html
15:49 GuShH this... looks... similar... http://www.use-enco.com/1/1/2461-12303-palmgren-drill-press-work-positioners-levelers.html horror.
15:49 GuShH Hyratel: yeah that's the one they sell here
15:49 Hyratel brother says ^ "I think I wasted $40 on it"
15:49 GuShH I would like it to position holes on the drillpress, but I don't want to spend a whole day on it
15:50 GuShH it's technically correct, for what it is, but it's not properly made.
15:50 ShH sees most china stuff as parts
15:51 Hyratel what would you suggest for the one i have?
15:51 Hyratel we wanted to use it in the high school robotics shop but...
15:51 GuShH lapping compound and several hours of moving it back and forth
15:51 GuShH to at least "marry" the slides
15:52 Hyratel yeah hmm
15:52 GuShH it will improve, and polish the gibs
15:52 GuShH gib strips
15:52 Hyratel I'd need some lapping compond first
15:52 GuShH true
15:52 Hyratel would it do anything to run it dry?
15:52 GuShH you can't make lemonade without lemons, I think.
15:52 GuShH any oil is better than no oil
15:52 Hyratel I mean for lapping
15:52 GuShH ah, it has to be wet
15:52 Hyratel hmm
15:53 GuShH you'll have to clean, dry and oil the parts afterwards
15:53 Hyratel once I get it to where it runs smooth, would axle grease do?
15:53 GuShH don't use your kitchen oven, smells like china for weeks.
15:53 GuShH if you wanted to... but motoroil works fine, ideally you'd want a sticky oil such as way oil
15:53 Hyratel that's why i thought axle grease
15:53 GuShH gear oil... or chainsaw bar oil, worst case scenario any oil is ok....
15:54 Hyratel it's what I used when rebuilding a c. 1930 table fan
15:54 Hyratel https://www.dropbox.com/sh/5rb970vj0etdndj/AACw9jL3VTOhWK6xCQHNT3m5a
15:54 Hyratel the old grease had turned to cement
15:54 GuShH haha
15:55 GuShH nice vintage fan
15:55 GuShH new stuff is terrible.
15:55 Hyratel weighs an ass-ton
15:55 Hyratel the oscillator driveshaft has a rifled bearing
15:55 GuShH lol
15:55 Hyratel https://www.dropbox.com/sh/5rb970vj0etdndj/AACw9jL3VTOhWK6xCQHNT3m5a#lh:null-IMG_3162.JPG
15:56 GuShH worm gear
15:56 Hyratel no
15:56 GuShH the left two parts are
15:56 Hyratel well
15:56 Hyratel yeah
15:56 GuShH what does the "rifling" ride on?
15:57 Hyratel either brass sleeve or steel bore
15:57 GuShH it's a spiral flute
15:57 GuShH I'd say
15:58 Hyratel once I got all the old crap out, I washed all the felt pads and repacked it with marine-grade axle grease
15:58 Hyratel it's still 'coughing up' blackened grease occasionally
15:58 Hyratel but it runs buttery smooth
15:59 GuShH lol
16:00 Hyratel I wasn't able to get the motor clamshells apart but I sluiced the shafts with solvent oil
16:01 Hyratel then reloaded everyting with thick grease
17:06 MrCurious wonder if there is a irc channel that would have insights into the best most cost effective place to source gearss
17:23 Hyratel MrCurious, what type of gears?
17:24 MrCurious want miter gears with a bore of 1/2"
17:24 MrCurious need 5
17:24 MrCurious dont want to break the bank
17:26 Hyratel http://www.qtcgears.com/rfq/bevelgears.htm
17:26 Hyratel specific ratio?
17:27 Hyratel specific material?
17:27 Hyratel Mr_Sheesh,
17:27 Hyratel er
17:27 Hyratel MrCurious,
17:27 MrCurious prefer metal
17:27 MrCurious 45 degree would be best so a pair of them would be 90 deg
17:27 Hyratel that's not the ratio
17:28 Hyratel that's the angle
17:28 Hyratel and afaik they're all 90deg
17:28 MrCurious 1:1
17:29 Hyratel http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-gears/=sa4ldg.
17:29 Hyratel http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-gears/=sa4ldg
17:29 MrCurious getting into the $30 ea range now :)
17:29 MrCurious thinking i will hit an auto parts store to see if they have any gears i can co-opt for my needs
17:30 Hyratel not likely
17:30 MrCurious http://letsmakerobots.com/files/userpics/u1533/Upper_arm_mockup.jpg
17:30 MrCurious could also use those gears bevel?
17:30 MrCurious and pinion
17:30 Hyratel http://www.amazon.com/Atwood-75030-Bevel-Gear-Bearing/dp/B000NJA0VM#productDetails
17:31 Hyratel this might work
17:32 MrCurious that would, but its about $18 ea
17:32 Hyratel you're not going to get much chepaer than that
17:32 MrCurious http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stainless-Steel-18T-M2-Spiral-Bevel-Tapered-Gear-10mm-x-37mm-x-12mm-/291090451764?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item43c657cd34
17:32 MrCurious would have pulled the trigger if they would have had just ONE more
17:34 Hyratel MrCurious, what's this for anyway
17:37 MrCurious robot arm of cource
17:37 GargantuaSauce_ finish your cnc!
17:48 Hyratel GuShH, https://www.dropbox.com/sh/5rb970vj0etdndj/AACw9jL3VTOhWK6xCQHNT3m5a#lh:null-IMG_2841.JPG
17:49 GargantuaSauce_ that bearing sure has seen better days
17:50 Hyratel I sanded that by walking the belt halfway off my beltsander and using the floating part to do the curves
17:51 Hyratel pic #2866 shows the final finish. not a mirror finish by any measure but it'll do
17:51 Hyratel #2868 shows just how deep the rust pitting is on the foot plate
17:52 Hyratel GargantuaSauce_, no kidding
17:53 Hyratel model start date: 4-5-31
18:29 GuShH MrCurious: based on the picture... how is that stainless?
18:29 GuShH I highly doubt they blackened it... that's carbon steel.
19:03 MrCurious the picture isnt
19:03 MrCurious but what i have is
19:03 MrCurious as the picture is not what i have, but the inspiration
19:13 robotustra_ MrCurious: are you working?
19:13 MrCurious yes
19:21 botustra_ scratch the
19:21 robotustra_ okey okey
21:45 Curious stret
23:06 MrCurious soldering surface mount components like 1.5mm long resistors and caps pisses me off
23:09 MrCurious hmmm, nailed that one in a single try with no chasing. seems tequnique evolves fasst
23:12 orlock i still havent broken out my smt gear in anger
23:13 orlock i used the hot air to shrink some tubes
23:13 orlock thats it
23:13 orlock i should resolder some old DIMM's for practice
23:15 orlock So, i have been playing WatchDogs
23:26 MrCurious shit. damn kit has 2 caps instead of a cap and a resistor
23:27 MrCurious thank you chinese people. your diligence is inspiring
23:27 orlock Maybe its actually a faulty cap that works like a resistor
23:28 orlock Theres an awesome SRL/William Gibson reference in watchdogs
23:28 orlock Your use a pile of junkyard robotic sculptures to help fend off a bunch of baddies
23:29 orlock with Jesus Built My Hotrod as the soundtrack
23:33 MrCurious more missing parts
