00:49 JCM83 It'd be neat to have a pirated CAD autodesk for linux.
00:54 SlaveToTheSauce_ i like openscad way more than any UI cads i've had the displeasure of wrestling with
00:54 SlaveToTheSauce_ which admittedly is not many
01:16 rue_shop2 this is the epitimy of my ability to not keep thngs simple
01:32 JCM83 rue_shop2 the picture at the bottom of this page is of "a robotic dolly structure built using 12" channel," but I'm more interested in what's going on with its wheels. See how they sort of clamp onto that rail? What are those called, why are they doing that, and doesn't that require a different set of bearings than if they didn't do that?
01:32 JCM83 http://www.servocity.com/html/aluminum_channel.html
01:34 Jak_o_Shadows i think it justs on top
01:34 Jak_o_Shadows mostly radial bearings still i spose
01:38 rue_shop2 they are just at 90 degree anlges to each other, which makes the rod sit between them
01:38 JCM83 yeah obvs
01:38 rue_shop2 like the pictures of the cnc I showed you with the bearings and the pipe
01:38 JCM83 you showed me that?
01:38 rue_shop2 I posted you a few images
01:38 JCM83 show me again
01:38 rue_shop2 zlog
01:38 rue_shop2 there is a log to review
01:39 SlaveToTheSauce_ i wouldn't trust that thing to not ride up off the rail
01:39 JCM83 how the fk did you do that rue_shop2
01:39 SlaveToTheSauce_ the same way anyone can
01:39 SlaveToTheSauce_ zlog
01:39 JCM83 zlog
01:40 JCM83 cool and by default it's saying 4/5 for today's date, but where in there is it?
01:40 JEntrep hey people are still on :P
01:40 rue_shop2 do yo uknow how to text search in your web browser?
01:40 JCM83 yeah
01:40 JCM83 searching for cnc
01:41 rue_shop2 camera slider too
01:41 rue_shop2 ugh, I think I'm cooked
01:42 rue_shop2 but its looking lots like an arm
01:42 JEntrep cnc = 3 motors :D
01:42 JEntrep y is everything motor control? :(
01:44 JCM83 ah I don't find it rue_shop2
01:44 rue_shop2 try the day before
01:46 SlaveToTheSauce_ http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/projects/camera_slider/
01:46 SlaveToTheSauce_ one more reason to be on irc 24/7
01:46 JCM83 went back awhile, I think you showed it to someone else.
01:46 JCM83 to cjdavies
01:47 SlaveToTheSauce_ was about 15 hours ago
01:50 rue_shop2 you can use to log to tell him when he gets back tommorow :)
01:51 rue_shop2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YU3vraleH0I
01:51 JEntrep camera slider? :D
01:51 JEntrep Who is in the film industry? :P
01:51 rue_shop2 I could have stopped at the base, and just counterbalanced the rest
01:51 rue_shop2 that would have been fine
01:51 rue_shop2 JEntrep, it was for a university
01:51 JEntrep booo
01:52 JEntrep Universities suck up too much money from the economy
01:52 rue_shop2 they paid me just fine
01:52 JEntrep :P
01:54 SlaveToTheSauce_ one pays me just fine also
01:55 rue_shop2 1) become professor
01:55 rue_shop2 2) write book
01:55 rue_shop2 3) make students buy book
01:55 SlaveToTheSauce_ yeah as if the publisher doesnt get like 95%
01:55 rue_shop2 it helps if the publisher is the university
01:56 rue_shop2 and the copier in the back of the bookstore is the press
01:56 SlaveToTheSauce_ lol
01:56 e_shop2 mumbles
01:56 JEntrep rue what are the gears controlling on that slider?
01:57 rue_shop2 they drive a cable
01:57 rue_shop2 that pulls it back and forth
01:57 JCM83 So seriously they have those wheels perpindicular like that just to stay on the rail? And they're expecting that to hold weight without developing bearing problems?
01:58 SlaveToTheSauce_ are you expecting good engineering knowledge from a store like that?
01:58 SlaveToTheSauce_ it is in their best interest to have their crap misapplied and ruined so you buy more
01:58 JEntrep are you guys familiar with this company: http://www.emerson.com/en-US/Pages/Default.aspx ??
01:59 JEntrep I'm looking for good projects to pursue
01:59 JEntrep Building things the world needs
01:59 JEntrep or could use
01:59 JEntrep any ideas? :)
01:59 JEntrep don't say drilldos >_>
02:00 rue_shop2 entertainment is a good industry
02:00 JEntrep I need to practice building web apps in go
02:00 rue_shop2 look what gaming did for computers
02:00 JEntrep why entertainment? O_o
02:00 rue_shop2 think of it
02:01 JEntrep what did it do?
02:01 rue_shop2 I put out a dancing robot challange
02:01 JEntrep >_>
02:01 JEntrep That sounds like a 'drilldo' idea
02:01 rue_shop2 its a great drive for developing motion control and high performance mechanics
02:01 JEntrep gaming?
02:01 JEntrep Oh, you mean dancing?
02:01 MrCurious drill-do?
02:01 MrCurious oh my this channel has taken a turn
02:01 rue_shop2 I THINK this arm I'm making now ight be abel to move fast enough to dance
02:01 rue_shop2 just dancing
02:02 rue_shop2 aaaanyhow
02:02 rue_shop2 people like to be entertained
02:02 rue_shop2 I'm gonna go post the new pics of this arm
02:03 JEntrep people like to be entertained? O_o
02:03 JEntrep there is a lot of entertainment out there
02:03 JEntrep Albeit there coudl really be more GOOD entertainment >_>
02:03 rue_shop2 yea, but cmon, dancing robots
02:03 JEntrep YouTube much?
02:03 SlaveToTheSauce_ did you ever make a video of arm4?
02:03 SlaveToTheSauce_ theres one on youtube but it's way before you finished it
02:04 SlaveToTheSauce_ or "finished" it
02:04 JEntrep Seriously, no ideas?
02:04 JEntrep Come on you bastards
02:04 JEntrep I know you have ideas
02:04 SlaveToTheSauce_ start simple
02:04 JEntrep With WHAT?
02:04 JEntrep :O
02:04 JEntrep People always say ideas are the easy part. Those people never had a good idea.
02:05 SlaveToTheSauce_ a differential drive platform that you can command using Logo
02:05 rue_more yea there are like _NO_ DIY hobbyist dancing robots
02:05 SlaveToTheSauce_ i am going to make my hexapod dance as soon as i do proper 4dof ik
02:05 JEntrep WTF is Logo??
02:06 SlaveToTheSauce_ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logo_(programming_language)
02:06 JEntrep that is not something the world can use >_>
02:07 SlaveToTheSauce_ your first thing (and second, and third...) are not going to be useful
02:07 SlaveToTheSauce_ get over it
02:07 JEntrep >_______________________________>
02:07 JEntrep :(
02:07 SlaveToTheSauce_ build something simple
02:07 JEntrep Like what?
02:08 SlaveToTheSauce_ whose usefulness lies in the knowledge you gain in the process of creation
02:08 SlaveToTheSauce_ like what i just fucking said
02:08 SlaveToTheSauce_ or come up with your own simple idea
02:08 JEntrep I WILL come up with my own simple idea >_<
02:08 SlaveToTheSauce_ in truth mine isnt even all that simple
02:09 SlaveToTheSauce_ have you flashed an led on a microcontroller yet?
02:09 SlaveToTheSauce_ if you haven't, that's where to start
02:09 SlaveToTheSauce_ because there is a 0 chance of producing something "of use to the world" without being able to do that
02:15 rue_more oh dear, I still ahve to fix my command line calculator
02:16 JEntrep flashing an led?
02:16 JEntrep lel
02:16 SlaveToTheSauce_ is that a no?
02:17 JEntrep is that a question?
02:17 SlaveToTheSauce_ i am pretty sure i did ask a question
02:20 rue_more you cant flash an led, they have no memory
02:25 JEntrep what do leds have to do with anything?
02:27 SlaveToTheSauce_ it's the hello world of the embedded software field
02:27 SlaveToTheSauce_ if you can't do that, you can't do shit
02:28 JEntrep you can't do shit
02:28 SlaveToTheSauce_ false
02:28 JEntrep true
02:34 rue_more I charlieplexed leds :)
02:34 rue_more 6leds on 3 bits
02:34 rue_more I'm happy with me
02:42 rue_more who knew ABB robots have been using canbus for ages
03:06 MrCurious i think what the robot community needs is a elbow joint like the big boys have, but in the sub $100 range.
03:08 JEntrep what do you mean?
03:08 JEntrep examples of joints?
03:13 GargantuaSauce http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/94/Joint.jpg
03:17 MrCurious no i want a harmonic joint in the sub 100$ range
03:17 GargantuaSauce yeah good luck with that one
03:17 GargantuaSauce finish your cnc and machine it out of nylon or delrin
03:18 GargantuaSauce and then make me 25!
03:19 JEntrep no seriously
03:19 JEntrep what kind of elbow joint are you talking about?
03:24 JEntrep Downloading 4 GB of Xilinx software >____________>
03:25 GargantuaSauce start with a microcontroller over an fpga, unless you're already familiar with either
03:25 GargantuaSauce https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7cGbLSnN78 fuuuck
03:25 GargantuaSauce attn rue_more
03:26 rue_more nice stepper drivers!
03:27 rue_more but I bet there is over $500 in that build
03:27 GargantuaSauce i suspect that's an understatement
03:28 rue_more that guys pretty advanced
03:28 GargantuaSauce yeah
03:28 rue_more looks like a home business
03:30 GargantuaSauce mmm
03:30 GargantuaSauce i should probably go to bed
03:30 GargantuaSauce but i kind of feel like imbibing caffeine and doing robot crap for 8 hours
03:42 GargantuaSauce yay my little sub-dollar smps modules arrived today
03:42 rue_more http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/robots/arm7/p1050940.jpg

03:43 rue_more http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/robots/arm7/p1050945.jpg
03:43 rue_more ^^^ thats a new method for me!
03:43 GargantuaSauce oh i like the 90 degree belt bend
03:43 rue_more http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/robots/arm7/p1050946.jpg
03:43 rue_more http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/robots/arm7/p1050947.jpg

03:44 rue_more http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/robots/arm7/p1050952.jpg
03:44 rue_more http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/robots/arm7/p1050953.jpg
03:44 rue_more the method for the top of the linkage arm is new for me too
03:45 GargantuaSauce cool
03:45 GargantuaSauce look forward to seeing how this work
03:45 GargantuaSauce s
03:45 rue_more pretty good for 3 evenings work
03:45 GargantuaSauce ya
03:46 rue_more I ran out of juice, I wanted to go all night
03:47 rue_more there are a few things that need spacers and simple junk I'm skipping for now
03:47 rue_more I want to work out the gripper
03:47 rue_more I'm gonna use a parallel jaw
03:47 rue_more not the geared one with all the linkages
03:47 rue_more two fingers on linear sliders
03:48 rue_more when I finish the gripper I can start balancing it
03:49 rue_more http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/robots/arm7/p1050945.jpg <-- the plastic pullies I had were no good, wouldn't stay straight, those metal ones are good
03:50 rue_more the pin for them should have been a bit farther into the middle
03:50 rue_more changing it now creates a ripple effect
03:51 rue_more its nice to have a lathe
03:52 rue_more not sure how I'm gonna attach the synchro pullies to the servos yet
03:53 rue_more but I'll have to trim the belts down, which will be interesting too
03:53 GargantuaSauce do you have a cheap source for timing belts or have you just ripped enough from random shit to be able to splices ones of arbitrary length
03:53 rue_more big pile of them
03:54 rue_more I spent time seperating them out from the plain rubber belts and the drive cables
03:54 rue_more I'll need to seperate them
03:54 rue_more I wish I had more 90degree gears
03:54 rue_more the belt has a lot more friction than I like
03:59 rue_more design process
03:59 rue_more http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/robots/arm4/p1010546.jpg
03:59 rue_more a) idea
03:59 rue_more http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/robots/arm4/p1010546b.jpg
03:59 rue_more b) plan
03:59 rue_more http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/robots/arm4/p1010575.jpg
03:59 peepsalot rue_more, that 90 degree belt drive is neat
03:59 rue_more c) implementation
04:00 rue_more I still like the gear one better
04:01 peepsalot i got a mini lathe recently
04:01 rue_more oo yes?
04:02 rue_more there are lots of round things I never thought of before I had a lathe
04:02 rue_more like rubber punches
04:02 rue_more for making holes and gaskets
04:03 peepsalot used harbor freight, came with 3 jaw and 4 jaw, a faceplate, and a few cheap cutters. i don't know anything about lathes, been reading up and buying some more parts like a chuck for tailstock
04:03 rue_more I made acountersink bender for holes in sheet metal
04:03 rue_more I might be moving away from mine\
04:04 rue_more it was pointed out to me that making a drill bit holder for hte carrige is better, and I agree
04:04 peepsalot bender? like a stamp?
04:04 rue_more yes
04:04 rue_more it puts a V around holes in sheet metal
04:04 rue_more so you can use taper headed screws and have them come out flush
04:05 rue_more call it a countersink
04:05 peepsalot nice
04:05 rue_more shaft adapters are a good thing
04:05 rue_more gnight
04:05 rue_more 2am here
04:06 peepsalot 3:48 here O_O
04:07 GargantuaSauce 6!
04:07 GargantuaSauce i'm winning!
04:15 JEntrep back
