00:41 Auzze http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QREt8x-ogc
00:42 RifRaf thanks Auzze
01:26 theBear hmmm, what is a robotustra sposed to do ?
01:26 theBear oh, that's why it sound familiar
01:26 theBear you printed any eye sockets recently mr raf ?
01:29 theBear i wonder how 'touchy' the connections from a ccd/cmos to the err, smart chip are, noise/length wise, i got a surplus of TINY laptop cams at the moment, some just vga, several 1 or 2 megawhatsits, but while tiny, they got avg 1-2" pcb coming out either side, not great for an eyeball, tho if you could remove the sensor/lens and wire it a few cm... tiny eyeballs
01:31 RifRaf theBear, no new eye sockets in the last few months, need to complete the last ones, they were coming along well
01:32 theBear sure looked good to me, right from the first attempt, ahh the magic of a rifrap
01:32 RifRaf did you see the riprap, i made a 3d printer without belts or leadscrews
01:33 RifRaf er rifrap*
01:33 theBear huh wha ? like, err, a train ?
01:33 RifRaf like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hN1LMJ9FPqY
01:33 Fiesta_ theBear, small mirrors may make them fit, mount them at 90deg
01:34 Fiesta_ (sorry, talking about your cameras which are too big)
01:34 theBear oh, the offset bearings thing ?
01:34 theBear angled
01:34 RifRaf yeah
01:34 theBear Fiesta_: oooh, you're what dad would call a thinking man, nice work
01:35 theBear mirrors are way easier than soldering sensitive optical sensors in free air :)
01:35 Jak_o_Shadows RifRaf: That's pretty fast if that's full speed.
01:35 RifRaf Jak_o_Shadows, yep, can go alot faster, thats about 60mm/sec
01:35 theBear meh, i dunno if that qualified as not leadscrew, is kinda cool tho, if you covered the couplers at the motors it'd look like magic 'cos you can't see the smooth rods spin
01:36 theBear damn, yer umm, pitch/accuracy/smoothness has come a LONG way since the first one
01:36 theBear i don't care what yer say, (rif) you got a bit of the magic touch when it comes to roboticey stuff
01:37 Fiesta_ how is this working?!
01:37 Fiesta_ :O
01:37 theBear magic :)
01:37 RifRaf thanks theBear, hopefully this year will make something again, just finishing up the nano printer first
01:37 Fiesta_ it has like.. rubber wheels that are gripping the pole?
01:38 Jak_o_Shadows Would you say it's better to start with the normal leadscrew first?
01:38 RifRaf nope, metal bearings on a smooth rod
01:38 theBear or maybe if ya imagine ballscrews, but instead of a threaded nut (threads on slight angle) you got slightly angled ballbearings, surprisingly (to me at least) the metal-on-metal is apparently pretty grippy with a gentle tension
01:38 RifRaf Jak_o_Shadows, yes
01:38 RifRaf theBear, still grips fine even if i drench in oil
01:38 theBear Jak_o_Shadows: i think you'd need to be good and tooled up to make them without having a 3d printer to make them :)
01:38 RifRaf yep tricky part to machine
01:39 theBear RifRaf: that physics, still blows my mind when i least expect it
01:39 theBear i wonder, it'd be ugly, but if you had 2 thin bearings straight and fat one on an angle, nah, it'd mess up the shiny rod
01:40 Jak_o_Shadows Oh yeah, I'd have 3D printed all the bits, not machine them.
01:40 RifRaf theBear, these are hardend rods, cannot even mark them with a hacksaw
01:40 theBear in my retirement one of my anti-stir-crazy hobbies is doing 'nasty butcher cowboy tricks' but pulling them off perfectly
01:41 theBear RifRaf: mmm, surely it wouldn't be good, i was just imagining an easy way to fabricate something that would work without fancy tooling, i figured you need pretty accurate/matching angles for the bearings, tho even skinny (less grip, tho i spose straight on more contact anyway) ones are gonna drag and be nasty next to a single angled one
01:42 RifRaf theBear, yeah would not work, they all have to be at exactly the same angle to work
01:43 Fiesta_ Even ball-screws are new to me. Is the physics of your mechanism vaguely related to these woodpecker toys? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0whFlY511fg
01:44 RifRaf i'll find a better image of them
01:44 Fiesta_ physics man... physics. ¯\(°_o)/¯
01:44 theBear Fiesta: nah, it's just like holding a nut and having a bolt held by a drill, spin the drill, it pulls the nut
01:45 Fiesta it seems like, when you accidentally screw a nut on at an angle.
01:45 Fiesta but somehow advnatageous. heh
01:46 theBear people even make cheapy ones like that more than occasionally, but it's less than ideal and you need a pair of tensioned nuts to avoid backlash ('gap' when bolt/thread aka screw reverses and the nut has a little bit of play)
01:46 theBear RifRaf: you got the closeup pics from your first try for fiesta to look at ?
01:46 Fiesta yes pls :)
01:47 RifRaf http://imagebin.org/286687
01:47 Fiesta huh, ok, so the bearings are all at an angle, and they run on their corners or something?
01:48 RifRaf Fiesta, nope i run directly on the center of bearing face
01:48 Fiesta yeah, i can see why everyone's amazed you have enough grip, i'm amazed too
01:48 Fiesta but if it works it works
01:48 RifRaf yeah. no one beleives it till you put one in there hands and say try make this slip
01:49 Fiesta yes, i'll definitely need one in my hands, i'll give you my address :D
01:49 Fiesta jk jk
01:49 RifRaf the 'slip' is actually a feature, its adjustable, so it can act like a clutch if forces are too extreme, but otherwise moves the load well
01:50 RifRaf Fiesta, you in AU?
01:50 Fiesta yeah
01:50 Fiesta bris
01:50 RifRaf wat part
01:50 RifRaf ok cool
01:50 Fiesta well, just south of caboolture really. in morayfield
01:51 RifRaf well i can send you one if you want, one day this year i'll get to a brisbane hackerspace though with the printer
01:51 Fiesta #hsbne is one
01:52 Fiesta i've enver been there, but their irc is pretty chatty
01:52 Fiesta you are in bris too?
01:52 Jak_o_Shadows those prints acetone-printed RifRaf?
01:52 RifRaf Fiesta, coffs, about 5 hours south, another view, this one is 16mm pitch http://imagebin.org/286689
01:52 RifRaf Jak_o_Shadows, yeah
01:53 RifRaf well acetone vapour treated after printing
01:53 theBear hmm, just wrote a confused possibly pointless very long msg to my most likely car-lender.... saved me ranting at you guys for 5 minutes, but i suspect it almost guarantees i ain't gonna see carkeys today :)
01:53 Jak_o_Shadows aye. Cool.
01:53 RifRaf that last image was strainght off the printer though
01:54 theBear i did notice and apologise for him catching the eye of the storm so to speak, tho who knows if he'll read thru all that other rambling crap to get to that bit :)
01:54 theBear wow, another 'local'
01:54 Fiesta i wouldn't know what to do with it if you sent me one of these, i don't have a 3d printer, but i've been getting a bit excited about the GUS Simpson lately so why knows.
01:55 theBear if this country was the size of european and asian countries we could all get together easily, unfortunately, it's a LITTLE more spread out than countries over that way
01:55 Fiesta this thing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEGTe1G2Gqs
01:55 eBear is west side, was syd for some y
01:56 Fiesta Perth?
01:56 RifRaf looks like a nice small printer Fiesta
01:56 theBear like the song says "live in newyork once, but leave before it makes you too hard, live in california once, but leave before it makes you too soft.." ... syd is a grumpy ass of a big dirty city, sooner or later it starts to wear off on yer
01:56 Fiesta yeah it has a really big print space too
01:57 RifRaf i guess not as little as i thought though, this is a little printer http://imagebin.org/286690
01:57 theBear yeah, well, mostly perth, bunbury and harvey for a while on and off, i'm a bit forced-retired-due-to-stupid-back the last few years
01:57 shuggans bear: u in the US of A?
01:57 Jak_o_Shadows those are fancy proper leadscrews
01:58 theBear no, that's what the song says, i was likening it to sydney and err, perth i spose (syd makes you too hard, perth makes you too soft)
01:58 RifRaf Jak_o_Shadows, yep 5 for $25, had to make something with them, they have a 2mm pitch
01:58 shuggans I see
01:58 Fiesta i grew up in Dianella until i was 13 or so, then came to bris
01:59 theBear http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTJ7AzBIJoI like so, not amazing music, but kinda entertaining, and a bit philiosophical and helpful
01:59 Fiesta our country needs some high speed rail :(, good crazy speeds, yes yes
01:59 Jak_o_Shadows Me and my friends should get around to making a 3D printer
01:59 theBear no shit ? i'm in yokine last few years, right near the swimming pool and the giant park
01:59 RifRaf theBear, best song
02:00 RifRaf showed that to kif and even she appreciated it
02:00 Fiesta i think i played in that park with friends a bit :)
02:00 theBear i only ever had one friend who was ya know 'smart' in a computer/electronics kinda way, course he was snapped up by ibm and busy for years and years... i don't hang around stupid people, but ya know, i ain't got anyone to build cnc or robots with
02:02 theBear RifRaf: yeah, she must be about the age i was when i first heard it (back when it was fresh on the radio) ... now a few years later i enjoy it in different ways, all that stuff about "appreciate what you've got, no don't worry, it won't be until you're much older that you can appreciate it in a way you can't understand now" or ya know, something to that effect, and i always liked "be nice to your knees, you'll miss them when they're gone"
02:02 Fiesta yeah, get your fix with internet and posting everything
02:02 Fiesta mail mail mail
02:02 RifRaf yeah wish there was more people closer here as well, still never met anyone local that like making stuff, was thinking of starting a local makerspace to find them
02:02 Fiesta global community and all that
02:03 theBear Fiesta: if yer don't mind, what kinda age are yer these days ? i'm err, heh, almost past what i can call early-30s with a straight face :) just thinking, we coulda gone to school together or partied or whatever
02:04 theBear i was in perth till i was almost 16, then just came back maybe err, late 08
02:04 Fiesta i'm 32
02:04 shuggans < - 24
02:04 RifRaf my font size on the screen is 32 point :( thats showing my age
02:04 shuggans We used to party all the time bear n I...
02:04 theBear heh, fancy that, ever go to any schools in the uwa end of town, or party in menora or mtlawley much ? spose 13 is on the young side for partying <grin>
02:05 theBear shuggans: yeah, i remember buying beer for yer when you were 8 <grin>
02:05 shuggans xD
02:06 Fiesta i did 1 year in MT lawley, then moved to bris
02:06 theBear funny what is exciting in irc, talking to someone far away you MAY have met 20 years ago :)
02:06 Jak_o_Shadows Australia is not a big country
02:06 theBear one year of school ? hehe, dare i say, most people do 7 or 8 by that age
02:07 Jak_o_Shadows South Australia is even smaller
02:07 Fiesta mt lawley has a primary school?
02:07 shuggans isnt australia the same size as the US?
02:07 theBear Jak_o_Shadows: har de har har (yeah i know yer serious, there's a long running theory in some circles, that perth is 2 degrees of seperation, guaranteed, between you and any person you see or talk to)
02:07 RifRaf shuggans, pretty much
02:07 RifRaf well thats wat my teachers used to tell us
02:08 Fiesta i did 1 Yr in Mt Lawley high
02:08 Fiesta iirc Perth is literally the most isolated city on the planet
02:09 theBear umm, not that i can think of, but err, didn't you go to a primary school ? i only partied in mt lawley, i went to east claremont for my first err, 6 years, terrible school btw, it was no longer a 'practicing school' like the full name implies (ecu next door used to supply almost-teachers to run the place) but damn, i thought nsw was south of vic when i first moved there, they left MANY gaps in my educations
02:09 Fiesta i doubt we met, i was in a rather isolationist religion (jehovah's witness) until i was maybe 20, didn't rly do anything
02:10 Jak_o_Shadows Maybe a couple more here, but the same principle
02:10 Fiesta went to primary school in Dianella, i think it's been converted to an Islamic school now, doesn't really exist anymore.
02:12 theBear mmm very possibly not, still, i couldn't help but get excited... recently i been talking to some of you/those guys when they knock on the door, being all 'retired' and relaxed from the anti-cripple pills, they're nice people, may as well have one friendly person answer a door that day... gotta admit it's surprising the gaps in bible knowledge even from the guys that offer (can't remember if they are the jehovahs or mormons, i see both every few month
02:12 theBear s)... i never liked church, but i was gotten into the bible as a literature thing by a wise wise man, and i like it, i find the differences between versions fascinating and sometimes surprising, nice to have a chat about it
02:12 theBear also i have a bad habit of ranting in irc some days
02:12 theBear ahh yeah, the islamic school is a few blocks away, used to ride past everyday (never really had a car or license) going to/from work
02:12 theBear on top of the hill
02:13 Fiesta yeah
02:13 theBear ahh well, that's exciting enough for this time of week, i know where you went to school long ago, now we're all grown up and same aged and into robots :) cool
02:13 Fiesta skinned my knees riding rollerbaldes down that hill heh,
02:14 Fiesta so you're 30 something?
02:14 theBear heh i can imagine, i lived on a steep hill growing up too, blades/skates were always worrying, skateboards and bikes weren't strapped to your damned legs so you couldn't jump off, with blades once you got going, you just had to kinda hope for the best :)
02:15 theBear '81, i pretty sure i 33 next month
02:15 RifRaf heh i started highschool in 81
02:16 theBear had a feeling it was highschool or electronics school, you old dog you
02:16 Fiesta so you're only 7 months older than me, same year even.
02:16 Fiesta cool
02:16 theBear don't worry tho, rif still knows how to party :-)
02:16 RifRaf electronics school was 85
02:16 RifRaf heh i went and saw some good hardcore bands on sunday
02:16 theBear Fiesta: yeah, like i said, strangely exciting, even tho it's same places VERY different times etc
02:16 RifRaf damn kids dance weird these days
02:16 theBear RifRaf: what, sunday 1985 ? <grin>
02:17 RifRaf 2 days ago sunday :P
02:17 theBear RifRaf: heh yeah, i think they're getting worse... and you seen what they do in melbourne with the giant pants and the sideways moonwalk kinda stuff ?
02:17 Fiesta did you say what primary school and highschool you went to?
02:18 RifRaf theBear, went to see these dudes, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGGYtMy6oAs they gonna do well this year
02:18 theBear east claremont 'prac', couple years at (sigh) the christ church grammar, then there was some err, i didn't deal well with that kinda authority, and they don't like black marks on the record, so we 'agreed to part ways', term at hollywood then surprise dad-promotion move to syd
02:19 shuggans the melbourne shuffle is awesome haha
02:19 theBear RifRaf: mmm, heavy, catchy, nobbad... gotta say i ain't heard of 'em... lotta good metal a couple people showed me in the last year that i never heard of before
02:20 RifRaf theBear, kifs bf is the bass giutarist and clean vocals, it grows on you, i like em now
02:20 theBear shuggans: heh, it's kinda fun to watch, but damn they're serious about it, all those little video 'battles' and hanging round in public doing it without even a ghetto-blaster/background music
02:20 theBear RifRaf: bf ? wtf ? how old is she now
02:20 RifRaf 20
02:20 theBear wtf !
02:20 theBear how did that happen so quick ?
02:20 RifRaf time gets away yep
02:20 theBear damn
02:21 theBear i spose, you remember what year rue visited ? a couple webcam pics i found from when i lived at that place suggest it was around '05 or so
02:22 RifRaf pretty sure it was around then
02:22 theBear (long ago rue visited aus, and a couple times all 3 of us met up and generally electronic-nerd-talked it up, and some of us drank rather heavily also :)
02:22 theBear yeah, so i spose that's about 10 or 11.yold
02:22 theBear damn...
02:22 RifRaf and it wasn't rue :P
02:22 theBear what wasn't rue ?
02:23 RifRaf i think i did get him to have a couple of beers once
02:23 theBear oh, i said some of us :)
02:23 RifRaf the drinking beer part
02:23 theBear he's got the gift, he can be happy as can be without a drink, he's a lucky boy...
02:24 RifRaf yes but is he getting any robots made?
02:24 theBear skype-cammed him a few months back, was kinda weird, still got that funny foreign voice and that excited head on his shoulders :)
02:25 RifRaf hah, must do that sometime
02:25 theBear i dunno now, but damn, he deserves a rest, robots mow his lawn, err, the other 20 or 30 he seems to have around must do something, heck, mowing the lawn is pretty impressive, not a one-off test thing, he just fills it up and lets it go and when he comes back the lawn is all mowed ! that's living the dream,, that's how we'll all do mowing in the future when everything is chrome
02:26 RifRaf theBear, a more mellow tune, homemade film clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EV4U_gmUkH8
02:26 theBear for as long as i can clearly remember these days he seems to have been obsessed with building a high enough temp/pressure boiler system into his walls to blow him clean into outerspace
02:26 theBear :)
02:26 Fiesta i wish robots would mow my lawn, 2 hectares :-/
02:27 theBear damn, your robots would need big fuel tanks
02:27 Fiesta have been brainsotmring ways to do it electrically
02:27 Fiesta maybe something that just never stops, it goes out and mows until it runs outof battery, comes back and charges, repeats indefinitely
02:27 theBear actually stumbled across some computer-that-drives-your-tractor/harvester commercial things recently, maybe on country-tv when i was south... looks kinda cool, big lcd touchscreen in the cockpit, off it goes
02:28 shuggans John Deere has this - for planting/harvesting
02:28 shuggans al through GPS/3g or 4g lte
02:28 Fiesta i will only pay for it in beans
02:28 Fiesta so yeah, challenging
02:29 shuggans the harvester even records areas that it harvested sparse crop from - and then the planter next year uses it to throw more seed down in that area when it plants
02:29 theBear yeah, probly supposed to stay in the cockpit while it goes, 'cos you know, tractors and attachments that size will shred most things, alive or dead, in a moment
02:29 theBear shuggans: ooh fancy
02:29 shuggans its pretty genius lol
02:29 shuggans theres a few people here who have it
02:29 shuggans and no - they arent in cockpit when it runs
02:30 shuggans they are the first time they plant with it - but after that its mapped out with gps
02:30 Fiesta farming tech is great, i love how they're using flying drones now to keep track of the state of their crops
02:30 shuggans xD
02:30 theBear got a buddy who owns most of the dairy/farmland in an area south of here, had to expand BIGtime to survive, and damn there's a lotta fancy computer planning and million dollar giant tractors and stuff goes on, and cos of ya know, struggling to survive in this modern world, there's only a handful of 'farmers' running the place any given time, 1000's of cows milked twice a day etc etc
02:31 theBear known him since i was a tiny kid and his dad ran the place, last few years him and mum been having christmas dinner with us so we have a good catchup least once a year
02:31 Fiesta to create an self-replicating automated farm is a dream of mine :). reprap that feeds ppl
02:32 Fiesta a box, plug into power, it spits out ... i dunno... food pills or whatever
02:32 RifRaf soylent green
02:32 Fiesta algae probably
02:32 theBear those robot-milking-machine-workerizers are pretty fancy these days, you know, same old metal tubes but a fancy cam-assisted-robot with fricking lasers on it's head or some such watches the cow come in, puts the stuff on, slips the tubes on, waits, pulls 'em off
02:33 Fiesta hell, could even be a back-pack in a spacesuit. supply air and food
02:33 theBear heh, may as well drug ourselves to sleep, oooh, i feel a matrix coming on
02:34 Fiesta bring on the virtual steaks
02:34 theBear heh
02:35 theBear save us listening to all the hippies complain about them too :)
02:36 Fiesta yeah, lab-meat might be an option later down the track.
02:36 Fiesta repraps made of meat, thinking meat.
02:36 Fiesta oh wait that's us
02:37 theBear oooh i miss doing sound for punk and metal, those 8 or 12 hour back2back noisefests were lots of fun, sure i get exhausted running back and forth and pushing thru crowds to setup band after band, but not only was it noisy and awesome, but it's like a soundguy masterclass, you got no time, you gotta grab the mics before the band throws em on the ground to packup, jam 'em on before the next guys even half setup, wrestle back thru the crowd, get a fresh
02:37 theBear beer, guess what the dudes drums and guitars are gonna sound like, twiddle some knobs, and BAM, it's bcak on
02:38 theBear ooh, did somebody say made of meat ? .... link pending
02:38 theBear http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tScAyNaRdQ
02:38 theBear apparently it's an old short story or poem or something, this is jsut someone acting it out
02:39 Fiesta yeah
02:39 Fiesta that was what the refrance
02:39 theBear damn it's well done, they just picked the right guys and the right clothes and the right place, blows my mind
02:39 theBear the reference ? you mentioned rifraps made of meat
02:40 Fiesta yeah i was referencing the made of meat story
02:41 Fiesta prolly gonna take a little while before we can make reliably sterile 3d printable structures, but hey just a matter of time eh.
02:42 Fiesta it kinda scares me, that inbetween period where it's not entirely guarenteed that the food these reprap farms are producing is safe enough to eat. *shudder*
02:42 Fiesta that experimental period
02:43 theBear meh, real meat isn't sterile, that's why you only got a few days to eat it
02:43 Fiesta where i give myself food poisoning every month lol
02:43 theBear mmm, i occasionally still do that, these days meat ain't cheap, it's kinda a treat, hard to throw out just cos it's not bright red anymore
02:43 RifRaf theBear, that was a strange video
02:44 theBear RifRaf: blows my mind
02:44 shuggans DUDE
02:44 Fiesta it's sterile while it's growing though, or while it's in the lab
02:44 shuggans How can you live without a nice juicy steak at LEAST every week?!
02:44 theBear not even sure why i like it so much, the fez certainly plays a factor, i got a soft spot for fez's
02:45 theBear shuggans: things change when you are suddenly forced to live on a limited and fixed income, you gotta prioritize, and it turns out, much as i like steak, i really like bacon and eggs, and REALLY like alcahol and cigarettes, like i'm REALLLLY into them
02:45 shuggans true enough
02:45 theBear backs are like knees ... be kind to them, you'll miss THEM when they're gone
02:45 shuggans steak is cheap here though
02:46 theBear where you at ? these days even specials of anything that looks half decent it's hard to get a big steak much under 10 bucks
02:46 shuggans haha - I'll get a pilots license and fly some down to you...
02:46 theBear mmm, sounds like a plan, you do that <grin>
02:46 shuggans Im from Nebraska and currently live in Kansas
02:46 theBear i'll err, wait here
02:47 theBear ahh, you might need a big plane to get this far
02:47 shuggans This stretch of the midwest USA is Beef country
02:47 shuggans bwahaha - a very big plane
02:47 shuggans wonder how much itd cost to next day a perishable to AU...
02:47 theBear mmm, not a lot of beef here, there's a few biggish slaughterhouses down in dairy country still, but not HUGE, just a giant-shed or two
02:47 shuggans lol maybe for XMAS next year :P
02:47 theBear heh
02:48 shuggans I can go get a 16 oz sirloin for $4
02:48 shuggans thats pretty decent
02:48 theBear i think i can afford a couple if i got all year to save, and since mum moved back to the city (here, opened a cafe) i regularly get a you know, mum-supplied eat-out
02:48 onr Lego Mindstorms EV3
02:48 theBear rest of the family still/back over east, mums like to see their boys
02:48 theBear dinner is a small price to pay :)
02:49 shuggans theres too many packing plants here...
02:49 shuggans its nuts
02:49 shuggans anywho - night all!
02:50 theBear mmmm, that whole meat-in-a-bag and postage kinda thing never seemed to take off here, you go to a butcher and get nice fresh cut stuff, or the supermarket and get day-older not-too-bad stuff
02:50 theBear cya shugg
02:51 theBear and after ranting another hour(s?) away to anyone who bothers to read that much nonsense, i'm gonna go back to the workshop (aka 2nd bedroom) and do some amazingly world class component level repairs on laptops to earn myself a few beers and maybe a pack of smokes :-)
02:52 theBear maybe even swap a mobile-fone ffc connector so small i can't even count the pins, hands seem pretty steady today, just the right mix of alcahol and caffeine in the old blood liquids
02:54 RifRaf been watch tennis sorry, hewitt playin , almost finished if you have tv
03:11 theBear i got a tv, but damn, tennis used to be boring to watch, now it's the same but they go "UUNNGH" everytime they move
03:11 theBear i just can't keep a straight face
03:16 RifRaf heh, we lost anyway
03:17 RifRaf sharapova is playing tonight, she grunts like the best
04:28 onr which one do you recommend out of these software:
04:28 onr http://www.smashingrobotics.com/most-advanced-and-used-robotics-simulation-software/
04:30 Fiesta here's v-rep's channel https://www.youtube.com/user/VirtualRobotPlatform/videos
04:30 Fiesta impressive stuff
04:31 Fiesta they're free unless you're commercial
04:34 onr impressive stuff
04:36 onr it makes me realize i probably want mechanics simulator instead of a complete robotics simulator
04:36 onr i want to handle software part myself from scratch
04:37 Fiesta you mean you just want to start with a physics engine?
04:39 onr hmm, probably
04:39 onr http://ezphysics.org
04:41 onr what do you use?
04:42 Fiesta i don't really use any of them. i guess i've used Gazebo as part of ROS stuff, but it's a pain in the ass
04:44 Fiesta i was running it in a virtual machine though, perhaps that made it bad
04:45 onr hmm
07:28 robotustra morning
08:15 aemquo evening...
10:43 GargantuaSauce onr: i think ODE is the most commonly used one for our nefarious purposes in academic circles at least
10:44 GargantuaSauce there are certainly other options though
10:54 sherlock GargantuaSauce: physics engine?
10:54 GargantuaSauce yeah
10:54 sherlock GargantuaSauce: bullet is a modern alternative
10:54 GargantuaSauce i looked at bullet and its api was really gross
10:54 sherlock but it has the shiny!
10:55 sherlock has an opencl backend and stuff
10:56 sherlock I am sure ODE is just fine for your purposes though
10:57 sherlock there is also..havok..closed source and paid though..likely not what you want
12:47 GuShh_Lap2 theBear: :| http://gushh.net/tmp/whitecat.mp4
13:31 GuShh_Lap2 RifRaf: some blanks for heatsinks, don't know why you wanted pics but here's one http://gushh.net/tmp/dscn4986f.jpg that's just the grooves, rest untouched until I get some blank bits to make thin parting blades with... for some reason all of my 1 inch stock is all dinged up but it should clean up.
13:32 GuShh_Lap2 won't even polish them, just degrease and that's all
13:37 GuShh_Lap2 don't want to cut fins that are 2.8mm thick, wouldn't get enough surface area
13:38 GuShh_Lap2 plus it's such a non critical part the depth will be counted per wheel turn and that's all there is to it.
13:49 RifRaf yep was amazing the cooling difference with 1mm fins and 1mm spaces
13:50 RifRaf and get em as deep as you dare, keeping the centre thin as needed also helped
13:53 GuShh_Lap2 RifRaf: thanks, yeah that's what I figured and why I'm stopping there, but I can turn a couple more blanks while I wait
13:54 GuShh_Lap2 There are a bunch of guys making repraps commercially here but they all depend on importing the metal bits or hiring machinists for a lot more money, figure if I can hit the equivalent cost of buying offshores but with rapid delivery, that should be alright.
13:55 GuShh_Lap2 right now everyone has to wait almost a month to get their hotends and whatnot, plus pay 50% taxes + 30% (new tax)
13:55 GuShh_Lap2 if the tax is the equivalent of the shipping fee, I still have the upper hand with faster delivery
13:55 GuShh_Lap2 just a thought
13:57 GuShh_Lap2 was thinking 1.5mm instead of the 1.8 or so they call for
13:57 RifRaf yep would be great if you could get a few bucks from it, then you will need to cnc to make em quicker
13:57 GuShh_Lap2 just trying to figure out a way to pay for the hobby
13:58 RifRaf you need to, it gets expensive otherwise
13:58 Shh_Lap2 not
13:58 GuShh_Lap2 I'm delaying a bit, having to spend on the roof first.
13:59 GuShh_Lap2 literally, silly storm. people are still cutting up fallen trees and recovering in general from it
13:59 GuShh_Lap2 don't know how I remained with services, everyone else lost power, phone, cable
14:00 GuShh_Lap2 it did all flicker and go to hell during the storm while the posts were falling (shorting out), some are still down
14:00 GuShh_Lap2 nearby they're moving to underground wiring
14:00 GuShh_Lap2 hope they do that here as well, just blocks from here they upgraded already
14:00 GuShh_Lap2 much safer and cleaner
16:01 MrCurious wonder what the life time cost of laying above ground power with towers and maintenence vs doing underground is over a 30 year life span...
16:02 MrCurious given storm and accident related failure issues
16:06 Tom_itx urban costs more underground because of all the ditch diggers
16:06 MrCurious but given over time for winter ice storm repairs
16:06 MrCurious and such, TCO should be much lower for subteranian
16:07 Tom_itx flooding in the interconnect boxes
16:08 MrCurious dont require hook and ladders to maintain that
16:08 MrCurious cheeper maintenence fleet
16:08 MrCurious can always bring interconnects up to slabs and boxes on th surface
16:08 MrCurious hybrid style
17:10 GuShh_Lap2 MrCurious: just came by the main road... wires on the ground, everywhere... and 3 phase low enough you can grab ahold of the wires
17:10 Tom_itx try it... i dare ya
17:11 GuShh_Lap2 they're insulated, but no thanks
17:11 GuShh_Lap2 distribution lines are higher up, non insulated
17:11 GuShh_Lap2 there's probably a mile of telephone wiring on the floor
17:11 GuShh_Lap2 just on that street
17:12 GuShh_Lap2 also saw a couple fallen walls and other interesting destruction
18:46 MrCurious http://hackaday.com/2014/01/14/hydro-the-low-cost-waterjet-cutter/
18:46 MrCurious now everyone will want to make a water jet cutter
21:56 Curious pokes robotu
23:48 Jentrep Hey guys :)
