00:12 GargantuaSauce i made mine with paypal and china
00:18 Jak_o_Shadows I just sawed a bit off a garden stake.
00:19 Jak_o_Shadows I have designed one to be 3D printed, but I don't see that happening soon
00:20 Jak_o_Shadows So wood and hot glue it is, sadly.
00:21 GargantuaSauce nothing sad about that
00:25 Jak_o_Shadows Actually, if i had a spare cutting board, i'd use that
03:27 Jak_o_Shadows Simple way and the hard way.
03:27 Jak_o_Shadows I could drill 2 holes in a reasonably precise alignment, and cope with it being half-dodgy
03:27 Jak_o_Shadows Or i could drill 1 hole and just re hot glue it
08:27 GuShH MrCurious: I could use one of those 1337 beers...
12:56 MrCurious sriracha shipments halted until january....
12:57 MrCurious seems someone is trying to cconvert the people of america into brits....
12:57 MrCurious GuShH: problems sleeping?
12:58 MrCurious or do you normally wake-n-drink?
12:58 GuShH MrCurious: just the issues with the house
12:59 GuShH and I don't drink anymore
12:59 MrCurious quitting is for alcoholiccs...
13:01 MrCurious i am stoked. my replacement linear bearings for my cnc will come Wed. this time supported bearings
13:45 MrCurious http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2013/12/10/deadly-drunk-driving-probation-sentence-leaves-families-stunned/
13:45 MrCurious kill 4 people while drunk, get probation.
13:46 MrCurious there should be punishment for this guy, and the judge who failed the justice system
14:44 theBear happened more than a couple times in this country... quite a bit more actually
14:45 theBear oh only one crash ? i thought you meant he was on probation for it and killed someone else and got 'let off' again
14:59 MrCurious nope
14:59 MrCurious he was rich, white, 16, drunk, killed 4 in 1 run
14:59 MrCurious 10 years probation
15:00 MrCurious have to wonder if it would have gone down the same, had he been anything but white...
15:00 MrCurious oh yeah ,and it was in texas
15:13 MrCurious wish i could find the leno video mocking the sign language translator
15:17 MrCurious http://www.nbc.com/the-tonight-show/video/wednesday-december-11-2013/n44241 skip to 3:30 :)
16:31 pythonsnake hey
16:32 pythonsnake aren't motors so noisy that they need another power source?
16:33 ace4016 they can be
16:34 ace4016 they don't necessarilly need another power source, but there may need to be some regulation or isolation done to keep logic circuits from the power noise the motors will cause
16:34 ace4016 it's just as Coolbear was saying in ##electronics ;)
16:36 ace4016 also, about the 4x1.5V batteried 4x1.5V = 6V
16:36 ace4016 pretty easy to regulate down to 5V from 6V :P
17:19 theBear back before printers had lasers in them, motors were so damned noisy there was a whole industry just building soundproofed boxes for them to live in <grin>
18:21 theBear oi rue ! you got a new dns or need to put the cable back that someone kicked outta your server last week ? and someone was interested if you got any pages re: your boiler/heating system
18:46 MrCurious did rue's boiler explode, or 100% fail freezing him to death?
18:50 MrCurious dd
19:19 gwty_ hello
19:20 gwty_ i'm planning to make an robot which uses image processing, and is hopefully able to drive itself
19:21 gwty_ what microprocessor do you suggest i start with? raspberry pi or beaglebone black or anything more powerful?
19:33 Tom_itx bbb
19:56 GuShH gwty_: neither of those are strictly microprocessors... and you don't want to use a microprocessor for this anyway...
19:57 gwty_ GuShH: okay, how should i proceed. im anticipating need for a lot of processing power
19:57 GuShH spend the money on books
19:57 gwty_ as well as interfacing with many sensors, motors
19:57 GuShH it sounds like your first rodeo... aim for something simpler that you can actually do.
19:57 GuShH build on top of that.
19:58 Tom_itx not even sure he has a horse
19:58 gwty_ GuShH: I've done small projects on arduino. i guess i mistyped microprocessors for single board computers(dont know terminology)
19:59 ShH pouts at Tom
20:00 GuShH gwty_: underneath any amount of layers you may want to add to your project, keep in mind it's still going to be the same platform with the same requirements whether it's being driven by an RC controller or a state machine...
20:00 GuShH work on getting a "rolling chassis"
20:01 gwty_ GuShH: if you mean a wooden board with wheels and motors , i already have one
20:01 GuShH any amount of image processing would be best suited to an fpga, at least.
20:01 GuShH gwty_: no I'm not talking about your british car.
20:03 GuShH http://www.annandave.org/Morgan%20factory%20027.jpg
20:03 GuShH gwty_: if you are willing to live with a small input resolution you can get away with using a couple micros
20:04 GuShH also low update rate
20:04 GuShH but you could lerp through the processing intervals
20:04 gwty_ GuShH: From what i have heard, FPGAs are too costly. [I'm trying to limit myself to 500$]
20:04 GuShH there are entry level dev boards these days
20:04 GuShH first establish what type of image processing, resolution, update rate, etc. to come up with a rough estimate of the memory, processing power, etc.
20:05 GuShH what type of solvers / integrators are you going to implement....
20:05 GuShH andwhathaveyouimgoingforacoffeenowyesijustmadeyoureadthisfornogoodreason.
20:06 m_itx gives GuShH a space
20:08 gwty_ okay, i guess ill be using mostly edge and face detection, preferable 720p, 5 fps would be good
20:08 gwty_ using openCV
20:10 GuShH 720p!!
20:10 GuShH how many bits?
20:10 ShH keeps pouting at Tom
20:12 gwty_ bits as in?
20:13 gwty_ ideally 720p. i've seen raspberry pi do barely 4-5 fps for face recognition at 640x480
21:24 MrCurious ever have those days when you look in the mirror after a deep period of concentration and wonder where the hell your eyebrow(s) went?
21:28 theBear ahh, finally found a still-working dns name for rue, oi dudeman ! you gotta plug the cable or give the server a kick or something
21:29 MrCurious theBear: you and rue playing hide-n-seek?
21:30 theBear nah, just tryin to find his webpages, both 'cos i don't seem to have bookmarked ANY of them, least anywhere i can find right now with the usual desktop all half-rebuilt and mainly acting as a footrest under the desk here, and cos someone else seems to have an interest in ridiculously overcomplex and needlessly dangerous setups like his :)
21:32 MrCurious ddid you try saying rue_bed rue_house rue_shop2
21:33 theBear well, i did eventually find the server address just now, but it's only two identical copies of a link to his business card that was sposed to get me some nice easy at-home website maintenance jobs he doesn't have time for, but turns out either the business owners are as useless as small business owners i see around these parts, or just as baffled as i am as to how you can send small amounts of money halfway round the world, with or without govt/tax p
21:33 theBear eople knowing it... it's tricky, sure you can do bank cheques and international acct transfers and things, but the flat fees are ludicrous compared to the pay for an hour or two programming here and there, and you can't visa from card to card or do a 'normal' online-banking domestic style transfer, it's kinda a head scratcher
21:35 theBear but as much as it's been a while and it'd be nice to shoot the shit in a different (like this one say,) channel for a change, i been rambling and ranting in the other channel all morning, and now i gotta go to the next room and try to finish the most impractical and technically challenging laptop 'repair' that i suspect has even been attempted :)
21:37 theBear heh see, ranting just like that, literally filled my irc window to the last line :)
21:37 theBear but i'll come visit soon
21:59 Jak_o_Shadows and, the back bit of the servo arm hit the servo mount, and the hot glue failed
21:59 Jak_o_Shadows damn.
22:01 Tom_itx hotglue ain't that strong
22:03 MrCurious did you prepre t\e surfaces so they were rough to give the glue something to grip to
22:05 Jak_o_Shadows Nah.
22:06 Jak_o_Shadows This is only rough till I get the right sized drill bits and bolts.
22:06 Jak_o_Shadows Also, I just reattached it using a hair-dryer
22:08 Jak_o_Shadows and the collision that caused the problem won't happen when I attach the servo horns properly.
