04:49 dumbass-afk http://hubolab.kaist.ac.kr/
04:50 dumbass-afk http://www.egr.msu.edu/~zhaojia1/doku.php?id=tailbot
05:56 GuShH dumbass-afk: isn't it ... very late over there?
05:57 GuShH well, very early by now.
05:59 GuShH dumbass-afk: I'm not sure that qualifies as running, but that's some pretty cool design
06:01 GuShH so it uses a geared motor to crank up a cord (mimic muscle), which spring-loads the legs, there's a ratchet to release the gears?
07:49 GuShH Tom_itx: around?
07:50 GuShH do you know how the milling vises from the right are attached to the lathe? http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/medium/PalmgrenCompare.jpg is the whole idea of those two arms to slide into the toolpost or am I reading these wrong?
07:50 GuShH I've seen ones with a plate that indeed would be held by the toolpost, it made sense as it allowed you at least 3 fixing points
07:51 GuShH but this type, if it does slide into the toolpost, it would automatically align itself and give you up to 6 fixing points
07:51 GuShH but not sure...
07:51 GuShH plus not every lathe is the same
07:52 GuShH nevermind this pretty much explains it http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/Baffle15.jpg ... it's worse than I thought
07:52 GuShH that's just terrible
09:38 Tom_itx GuShH, it would hold the workpiece
09:38 Tom_itx after all, it's a lathe
09:40 Tom_itx http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.deansphotographica.com/machining/projects/noclamp.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.deansphotographica.com/machining/projects/millingattachment.html&h=480&w=672&sz=117&tbnid=8u-NaOvN3-lKoM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=126&zoom=1&usg=__hgG5zAgVH4-QeEBGL8JfQogvNKQ=&docid=gqkICtIffiUnmM&sa=X&ei=E6w9UvqiCuKD2AWxx4CQDA&ved=0CFkQ9QEwAA
09:41 Tom_itx http://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=1681
10:00 GuShH Tom_itx: no, the mounting portion with the hook
10:00 GuShH the U part
10:00 GuShH it's a silly old design
10:00 GuShH glad I didn't buy one
10:01 GuShH the first one from your link uses a square bracket or milling square... but it's a toy
10:03 GuShH http://img2.mlstatic.com/morsa-para-torno-met-100-metalmed_MLA-O-142539938_7764.jpg see the U bracket, that's what I was talking about
10:04 GuShH it's not meant to be used with t nuts or anything, just separate brackets held onto the carriage, which is horrible.
10:05 GuShH so it's similar to chucks and their plates, you have to machine them to your specific lathe (unless it's a commonly available toy)
10:06 GuShH 385 usd for the red one... what a ripoff
10:06 GuShH 14KG 100mm wide
10:15 GuShH http://www.iscar.com/eCatalog/Item.aspx?cat=5508566&fnum=2500&mapp=IS
10:15 GuShH lawl
10:57 rue_house gush, I'm on the looking for a parting blade holder
10:57 rue_house I missed the size on mine when I made it
11:23 Tom_itx rue_house, what's wrong with the size on yours?
11:23 rue_house I made it ttoo big
11:23 Tom_itx too big how?
11:23 Tom_itx too high center?
11:23 rue_house the dovetail I was using broke during making it, and I was distracted
11:23 Tom_itx too fat?
11:23 Tom_itx too tall?
11:23 Tom_itx too long?
11:23 rue_house also, I forgot to compensate for hte cutter being wedged
11:23 rue_house the slot is too wide
11:24 Tom_itx shim it
11:24 rue_house NO machine shop I have found can sell me a cutoff tool holder
11:24 Tom_itx i feel this requires pictures and diagrams
11:24 rue_house the shims keep getting destroyed, too much force
11:26 Tom_itx weld the edge and recut it
12:59 GuShH rue_house: you might want to make one where the cutter is at an angle (upwards) and not 90° straight
12:59 GuShH rigidity is the key to parting tools and holders
12:59 GuShH without it you are asking for trouble
12:59 GuShH either the hss blade snapping (dangerous, scary) or just a poor part, friction burns, etc
13:00 GuShH I didn't buy one, just a blade because the holder they were selling was flimsy as heck
13:00 GuShH also, grind a relief on the blade
13:01 GuShH most parting blades are sold as blanks, like bits.
13:01 GuShH if you grind an angle you can also get the part to separate without leaving a tit
13:01 GuShH and if you keep feeding, the tit on the chucked piece will also get removed
13:01 GuShH that's how they do it on turret lathes
13:02 GuShH 2 operations at once, but the parting is often done on the backstroke (two tool holders, one on the back, so when you bring it toward you, it performs other actions on the part)
13:02 GuShH I'd like to have a second toolpost, but that means I'll need a mill first.
13:13 MrCurious whoa. there is an illness where beer making microbes take up residence in your guy and brew suds in your gut. auto-brewery syndrome
14:25 rue_house GuShH, I just rake back the top of the blade
14:25 rue_house yea, I shattered by blade
14:25 rue_house have to get a new one of those too
14:25 rue_house I dont recall if the peice is long enough to work with
14:35 MrCurious i wish i knew how to make soft boiled eggs
14:35 MrCurious wrong window
15:25 MrCurious but they are too hard
15:47 GuShH MrCurious: lawl
15:47 GuShH are you kidding?
15:47 MrCurious :)
15:47 GuShH it's just timing
15:47 MrCurious it is a pub
15:47 MrCurious pun
15:48 ShH eyer
15:48 MrCurious when you mess up at soft boiled, you get hard boiled
15:48 GuShH not really, it's in between
15:48 GuShH unless you entirely forgot about it
15:48 GuShH I like soft boiled, with a pinch of salt and some bread
15:48 GuShH has to be fresh bread.
15:48 GuShH right out of the oven that is
15:48 MrCurious soldiers
15:49 MrCurious sliced toast strips
15:49 GuShH what
15:49 GuShH nah
15:49 GuShH it has to be soft to pick up the yolk!
15:49 GuShH spongey
15:49 GuShH rue_house: you keep butchering your lathe man!
15:49 GuShH start levelling that flimsy stand you made and make sure you aren't twisting the bed
15:50 GuShH then check your saddle and tailstock fit, use pprussian blue and see if you need to lap the surfaces or not
15:50 GuShH tigthen everything down on the saddle, check your gibs too.
15:51 GuShH and your tooling has to be absolutely rigid, any vibration will propagate and cause problems!
15:51 GuShH did you snap your parting blade because it was sticking out too far, the holder wasn't rigid or did you feed too fast at a too slow speed?
15:51 GuShH it only has to stick enough to clear past 1mm off the center of the work!
15:52 GuShH plus whatever clearance you desire to protect the toolpost
15:52 GuShH and you need to provide a constant feed once it begins to cut
15:53 GuShH I think any machinist book will say all this but with better wording heh
15:53 GuShH MrCurious: got a new project in mind... designing it today. How about you
15:54 MrCurious playing video game chillin after long airplane rides
15:54 GuShH pft
15:54 MrCurious do you have those where you live?
15:55 MrCurious i should re-assemble a helocopter
15:55 GuShH dose what, games?
15:55 GuShH those*
15:55 ShH slaps MrCurious for being a dip
15:55 GuShH Bah it's raining, need to get the cat to the vet anyway
15:55 MrCurious cat-lady
15:57 GuShH says the guy with 8 cats
15:57 GuShH ....
15:58 MrCurious i think its 9 actually
16:16 GuShH :o
16:20 MrCurious yeah. the fail is inthinking "oh i dont have one that color"
16:32 rue_house hmm , my shaver wont move the mouse cursor, annoying
16:32 MrCurious set your cell phone next to your mouse... you hand will gravitate towards it over the mouse... thats really annoying
16:41 dumbass-afk hmm, Apple doesn't make a shaver-mouse-phone?
17:00 dumbass-afk side effect: if moving the phone causes the mouse to move, then talking on the phone in a moving car could result in the cursor being left behind in Memphis
17:03 rue_house "stand back I have a pipe bomb!" "uh, thats just a piece of pipe" "YES, but look how fast I got half way there!"
17:05 dumbass-afk that threat bombed, making it a true pipe bomb .....
18:00 dumbass-afk is all film advertised as "laminating" also "shrinkwrap"? because i do not want it to shrink
18:32 GuShH don't think so
18:32 GuShH laminating just fuses with heat, doesn't it
18:32 dumbass-afk afaik
18:32 GuShH small shrinkage
18:32 GuShH bbl
18:33 mbass-afk is just looking for a cheap way to apply not-paint to bare unpainted s
18:34 mbass-afk plans to shrink wrap the car, but minus the sh
20:13 rue_shop2 why wrap the car?
20:14 dumbass-afk keep it from rusting
20:16 mbass-afk hopes rue cheked the other wi
20:37 rue_shop2 :)
20:38 rue_shop2 hmm I guess the genorator wont be happy if I top up the oil with sulfuric acid, damn me and my bottle re-use
20:40 dumbass-afk stir in a lot of baking soda to neutralise it?
20:40 mbass-afk imagines the slimey paste in the genny's crank
21:14 rue_shop2 heh, no I didn't, but almost
21:15 rue_shop2 I made it so easy to change the oil in the genorator I dont knwo why I didn't do it a loooooong time ago
21:17 Tom_itx ok, 3 bad caps out..
21:24 rue_shop2 gen wouldn't stay running
21:24 rue_shop2 helps to open the vent on the tank
21:26 rue_shop2 int eh process I screwed up the carb settings
21:42 rue_shop2 I give up for the night, I hate that carb
21:43 mbass-afk hands rue a fuel injector from the recycling place, assuming rue has some transistors and an
21:46 rue_house mmm mayeb i should convert it to electric?
21:47 dumbass-afk yes! an electrically powered emergency generator!
21:48 dumbass-afk i think you need a time machine between the input and output
21:48 rue_house ooo thats fancy
21:51 mbass-afk thinks of these things: see, the power it was making when you were not using it an hour ago, can be added to it as input now to make the power you need
21:51 dumbass-afk this makes up for all the losses, conservation of engery and all that rot
23:51 rue_shop2 hmm
