01:05 katsmeow-afk it's just less in the water, and not on the same rocks
02:46 theBear hmmm... i wonder... a generic usb-hd-bridge-thingy salvaged from any of several random 'broken' drive enclosures should be happy to talk to a ide/atapi cdrom right ?

04:30 tsmeow-afk looks at theBear ,, this looks like an Aussy thing : http://www.ebay.com/itm/390645566337
04:37 GuShH katsmeow-afk: looks hard to clean
04:37 GuShH although the top portion of the "bottle" neck is probably just solid
04:38 ShH likes glasses that aren't hard to c
04:44 katsmeow-afk and large enough to hold meaningfull volumes of drink, like flower vases
04:50 tsmeow-afk ponders 4" pvc pipe, 8" long, with a appropriate cap on the end, and turned on a lathe to round the cut edges and make finger g
04:53 Jak_o_Shadows Was given an electric food mixer today. I wonder if the motor is useful
04:53 katsmeow-afk mmmmmm electric food
04:57 katsmeow-afk use it to mix epoxy?
04:57 Jak_o_Shadows Hmm, I don't do a lot of that
04:59 katsmeow-afk well, hand it to your robot, it can have cake bakse sales in it's spare time
05:00 Jak_o_Shadows haha
05:01 katsmeow-afk local tv news is now discussing the velocity of their god's farts
05:01 Jak_o_Shadows Hmph. It's got a half-decent sized transformer in it, a choke, and the motor.
05:02 katsmeow-afk transformer in a mixer?
05:02 Jak_o_Shadows Yeah, it's attached to the motor. I think it has several coils, for changig the motor speed, as well as providing the magnetic field for the motor
05:03 katsmeow-afk oh
05:05 Faek Stick a mini circular saw blade on it and attach it to your robot
05:05 Faek And a flail for the robot as well
05:06 Jak_o_Shadows but its probably more of n AC motor
05:10 tsmeow-afk has run an 120vac baby table top fan in the car using a 300w "inver
05:11 katsmeow-afk i wanted to build a 4wd robot platform using a certain cheap 120vac drill, because it was a brushed motor (good for dc) and has a 2-speed gear reduction
05:13 katsmeow-afk
http://www.harborfreight.com/compact-2-speed-1-2-half-inch-right-angle-drill-97622.html ; put one at each wheel , drive with 120vdc , pass cars on the interstate
05:13 Jak_o_Shadows Yeah, this has a brushed motor, but it has no magnet stuff.
05:13 katsmeow-afk prolly run just fine on 48vdc too
05:26 Jak_o_Shadows Yep, it's a nice little motor that I have no idea how to use
05:26 katsmeow-afk *how* to use, or what to use it for?
05:27 Jak_o_Shadows How. I mean, I could wire it up to something stationary just with AC, but I don't see what use that is
05:27 katsmeow-afk or you can use it on a portable dc thing
05:28 katsmeow-afk you said it has brushes
05:28 Jak_o_Shadows Yeah, it does. So ok, i have a magnetic field in the rotor, but the stator one is provided by the transformer I think
05:29 katsmeow-afk transformer = coil of wire,, make your own dc controller, but i bet if you take that thing and plug it into 24dc instead of 120vac, it will spin
05:30 Jak_o_Shadows So dump power into the transformer, control the DC motor normally?
05:30 katsmeow-afk no
05:31 katsmeow-afk run power from battery (+) to one bruch, then off the other brush to one side of coil on stator, then off the other side of stator to battery (-)
05:32 Jak_o_Shadows ah, i get ya. Now to find a bigger DC voltage source. Best I can do is a computer PSU
05:32 katsmeow-afk try it on 12v
05:38 Jak_o_Shadows Nope. Perhaps i'm doing it wrong. I think I'll just shove it next to the other mixer motor
05:40 katsmeow-afk :-(
05:40 Jak_o_Shadows It is http://ccymotor.en.made-in-china.com/product/pMeJgdcoLyhV/China-Hand-Mixer-Motor-5515-5520.html
05:41 Jak_o_Shadows There's a bunch of rubbish to do with setting the speed, but w/e
05:42 katsmeow-afk oh, it has 5000 turns of #32 wire on the stator coil,, ouch , bad news for running it on low voltage
05:43 Jak_o_Shadows where the heck did you pull that from?
05:43 katsmeow-afk am i wrong?
05:43 Jak_o_Shadows Oh, i don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if you're correct
05:43 katsmeow-afk min order is on those is 3000 motors, how did you get one?
05:44 Jak_o_Shadows cracked open a hand mixer where the speed control was broken.
05:44 katsmeow-afk look at the base of the terminals on it, you'll see maybe one or two turns of the coil wire wrapped and soldered
05:45 katsmeow-afk to get torque at low voltage, you need amps, small wire, and worse, lots of it, is too high resistance to cram any current thru at low volts
05:46 tsmeow-afk should repuinctuate
05:46 katsmeow-afk to get torque at low voltage, you need amps, BUT small wire (and worse) and long lengths of it, or many many turns of tiny wire, is too high resistance to cram any current thru at low volts
05:47 katsmeow-afk you may need to reach 100v just to get one amp to flow
05:47 katsmeow-afk use an ohmmeter
05:49 tsmeow-afk wanders off to do other th
05:50 Jak_o_Shadows ok. I'll work on this later, when I have the batteries needed to actually use this.
05:52 GuShH Jak_o_Shadows: so... never?
05:52 Jak_o_Shadows oh well
05:52 Jak_o_Shadows I have 2, so they could be handy, with gearing, for something
05:53 GuShH this is how hoarding begins
05:54 GuShH this bit of 2cm steel wire could be handy for something, let's keep it!
05:54 GuShH soon you can't even open the door.
05:54 Jak_o_Shadows Don't worry, I'll put stuff in boxes
05:55 Jak_o_Shadows http://au.alibaba.com/product/1105456776-hand-mixer-electric-knife-benders-motor.html is it.
06:28 GuShH Jak_o_Shadows: meh I have loads of motors... never really used a single one of them
06:29 GuShH except for a tiny transformer winding thingy I made
06:29 GuShH it's always the stuff you don't have that you actually need... heh
06:30 Jak_o_Shadows bought stuff is always handier, cause you can find more documentation
06:32 GuShH this guy is nuts ... and I thought I was nuts... he's on a whole-notha-levah https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8u0Ys_L_HvA
06:33 GuShH that's one tiny inverter... seems like a waste of money
06:39 GuShH he can't stick weld shit.
07:09 katsmeow-afk You know that your landing gear is up and locked when it takes full power to taxi to the terminal.
07:12 katsmeow-afk and as the plane gets shorter the further you taxi
07:17 katsmeow-afk GuShH , HF had to put big stickers on their welders, saying "1 minute of welding, 10 minutes not welding"
07:17 katsmeow-afk so if you have 30 minutes of welding to do, it's going to take you a week
07:18 Faek Does it specify that you have to do 1 min at a time?
07:18 katsmeow-afk 1 minute max, then you must stop
07:19 GuShH katsmeow-afk: hahah
07:19 GuShH holy crap! the angle grinder fence worked first time
07:19 katsmeow-afk congrats
07:19 GuShH of course it's held together with a vise grip
07:19 katsmeow-afk naturally
07:19 GuShH I'll put something together later, right now I need to finish cutting the sheet metal
07:20 katsmeow-afk vise grips prodide a lot of needed adjustability :-)
07:20 GuShH katsmeow-afk: what would you do without vise grips?
07:20 katsmeow-afk without vise grips i wouldn't do much of anything
07:20 GuShH there's a lot of room for improvement but as-is I couldn't cut so straight by hand on a good day
07:21 katsmeow-afk the grinder is some to blame, there is a lot of play in the disc when it's turning
07:21 katsmeow-afk i have often run the disc against the straightedge on purpose to get a perfect line cut
07:21 katsmeow-afk course, you haveto replace the straightedge a lot
08:49 katsmeow-afk well, that didn't work, but it prooves you just need to experiment sometimes: the lil cordless drill pulls 7amps easy when driving a big bit , and 10amps if the bit grabs
08:49 katsmeow-afk 2 or 3 amps when driving a small bit lightly
10:13 GuShH katsmeow-afk: and this means...?
10:13 GuShH I had to replace the bearing on my angle grinder, it had quite some play
10:13 GuShH the rest is not play but rather flex, from the 1mm wheel
10:14 GuShH the jig worked until I had to turn the big sheet of metal around and I came into a few issues... ended up cutting by hand again heh
10:14 GuShH works best to score the line, then a light pass and finally cut through.
10:14 ShH needs a plasma cu
10:16 GuShH with a lot of engineering I could come up with a much better system to guide the grinder... but for now I don't plan on building one
10:30 GuShH katsmeow-afk: the setup, couldn't be simpler... http://gushh.net/tmp/dscn4061f.jpg but yeah, not ideal. the sliding motion was smooth, I could change the depth by pushing the handle up or down, as the mounting point is offset from the center, as you can see it scored a perfect line (which I then cut through)
10:31 GuShH MrCurious: fix your damned connection!
10:32 MrCurious not in my power. seems i am not falling off wifi
10:32 MrCurious must be upstream
10:32 GuShH threaten to blow yourself up if they don't fix it within 15 minutes
10:33 MrCurious i just woke up, i am 1/2 through a pepsi. anything i try to fix at this point will be ireprapraibly harmed
10:33 GuShH now I know who drinks pepsi
10:45 MrCurious you should drink pepsi
10:45 MrCurious its good for you
10:45 GuShH tastes like ass, sorry
10:45 GuShH I don't drink coke either
10:45 GuShH no fizzy shit.
10:45 GuShH water, coffee... beer or wine sometimes.
10:45 MrCurious too much ass in it for your tastes?
10:45 GuShH I guess.
10:46 GuShH during summer I make a lot of milkshakes
10:46 GuShH on winter not so much...
10:58 MrCurious there are fingerprints all over my touch screen!
11:02 MrCurious if people keep attacking our govt buildings, they wil become all fortified, and our government will speciate and become a seperate species or ruling class bipeds
11:05 Tom_itx ping
11:06 Tom_itx ping
11:07 MrCurious pong
11:07 Tom_itx damn interweb
11:07 Tom_itx was logged onto a server all morning with nothing
11:07 MrCurious better fix it before GuShH goes balistic...
11:09 Tom_itx seems my server usually logs into another server than my nick
12:54 katsmeow-afk yeas, better to make a few lite passes than cut it on one pass, the metal cuts better the colder it is, and it won't clog the disc as badly
12:55 katsmeow-afk course, your 2x4 will flex a lot also, just screw some 1ft wide plywood to it
12:58 katsmeow-afk for $9.40 i got another all glass door, 20 inches of one low-profile 5" wide TO-3 heatsink, 7" of 4x4 tall TO-3 heatsink, and two handfulls of smaller heatsinks, and door and window screen
12:59 katsmeow-afk you do wear wire nuts in your ears when cutting like that, right?
13:06 katsmeow-afk re HF vibration, it's belts and the fan in the motor
13:07 katsmeow-afk but don't worry about the fan so much, it will shake loose, get chewed up or melt down, and you replace the motor when it lets the smoke out
13:08 katsmeow-afk ALSO !!! HF uses the same motor with diff nameplate for 1/3, 1/2, and 3/4 hp , and for the most part you cannot tell when it's re-engaged the start winding as it bogs down
13:08 katsmeow-afk if you cannot tell the start winding is engaged, put an idiot lite on it to alert you
13:10 katsmeow-afk first, check the grnd -to-chassis connections, they are seldom made right, after a few hrs, check all the spade connections again, i dunno how, but i have had them work loose, so crimp the connector and secure in place with tyraps
13:11 katsmeow-afk btw, in many cazes with those tiny motors, going to a *thinner* belt may work better
13:12 katsmeow-afk you can get aramid or kevlar thin belts, i've never broken one, even with decades of use on them
13:12 katsmeow-afk getting them to loosen up also takes forever
13:14 katsmeow-afk ALSO !!!! some Chinese lathes come with plastic gears, which ride directly on metal pins, pull them off, grease the crap outa them, use them only long enough to bore out the other gears and press in (lightly) ball bearings, or at the very least, metal bushings
13:14 katsmeow-afk then put those on the lathe and do the ones you greased the crap outa
13:15 katsmeow-afk some mini-mills, ditto
13:18 katsmeow-afk re: the grease ports, you can get needle greasers for wheel-tipped chainsaw bars, they work great anywhere there's not a zerk "grease fitting"
13:18 katsmeow-afk push and hold tight, squeese trigger
13:20 katsmeow-afk heh @ wooden mallet : i remember an oldtimer 50 yrs ago would same some sections of his winter firewood, to make mallet heads and handles the coming year, as needed
13:20 katsmeow-afk he also saved wood for dowels
13:23 katsmeow-afk lol @ " mainly due to the fact that the Internet suffers of very low SNR ", heck, i find it is easily 100:1, and can reach 1000:1 !
13:23 theBear i still grab nice chunks of firewood for lathing stuff
13:23 katsmeow-afk i dunno why it's called SNR when it's usually written noise:signal
13:24 theBear 'cos NSR is hard to say :)
13:24 tsmeow-afk saves wood that smells nice an
13:24 tsmeow-afk passes her fries/chips to the
13:27 theBear heh, some wood does smell pretty good
13:27 theBear ooh chippies :)
13:27 theBear why, thankyou :)
13:28 katsmeow-afk so i was measuing the current draw of the 19v drill to see A) why batteries died every 10 minutes, and B) could i run it off a 4.75a 19v laptop adapter
13:28 katsmeow-afk now, i know why , and i know i cannot
13:29 theBear hmmm, roughly how much DOES a drill like that suck somewhere between stalling and drilling something thats's err, hard to drill ?
13:29 theBear sidenote: if i don't find my 6a+ switchable lappy supply WITH dual usb chargey holes in the side soon, i'm gonna go MENTAL
13:30 katsmeow-afk [08:33] <katsmeow-afk> well, that didn't work, but it prooves you just need to experiment sometimes: the lil cordless drill pulls 7amps easy when driving a big bit , and 10amps if the bit grabs
13:30 katsmeow-afk [08:33] <katsmeow-afk> 2 or 3 amps when driving a small bit lightly
13:32 katsmeow-afk so yeas, 10amp stall easily, 7amp pushing a 3/8 bit hard but not bogging down, 3 or 4 amp if pressing a new sharp 1/8 bit into aluminum
13:33 katsmeow-afk i tossed the batteries and ran some #20 stranded out to alligator clips, so i can clip to the car battery or a 24v psu inside
13:35 katsmeow-afk oo, a low vathrage transciever
13:36 katsmeow-afk gotta luv transcievers with little vathrage
13:38 tsmeow-afk ponders interfacing STL memory chips with 74LVTH l
13:39 theBear hmm... good to know
13:46 tsmeow-afk goes outside to wash the rocks and sand off a tree s
14:12 katsmeow-afk there, clean tree stump
14:56 Tom_itx http://www.electronicproducts.com/Sensors_and_Transducers/Sensors/Image_of_the_Day_Voyager_probe_leaves_our_solar_system_enters_interstellar_space.aspx
15:15 katsmeow-afk awefull bright out there, i wonder why it's solar cells are running so low
15:15 katsmeow-afk where did they get that pic?
15:26 razieliyo are robotics somehow related to game physics?
15:27 katsmeow-afk if the robot can play the game, i spose
15:29 katsmeow-afk "push that button, Tiggr" "I'm sorry, Kat, i cannot do that, it's the physics"
15:43 katsmeow-afk no wonder
15:43 katsmeow-afk 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
15:43 katsmeow-afk made no sense to me
15:43 katsmeow-afk the goofs page is huge
15:43 katsmeow-afk on IMDB
15:44 katsmeow-afk every time something happened in that movie, i thought it was a new universe, or someone's wierd dream
15:44 katsmeow-afk for instance : The scene where Dr. Floyd talks with Russian scientists in the space station is shot from two angles. One of the seated women has her legs crossed in all the shots from one angle and uncrossed in all the shots from the other angle.
15:45 katsmeow-afk that had to be "as seen from" different universes, or two people's dreams, right?
15:45 katsmeow-afk or : During the dawn of man, when the ape throws the bone in the air after defeating the rival group, the bone rotates counter clockwise as it goes up, but clockwise as it comes down.
15:46 katsmeow-afk i know of no physical phenomina that would cause that, it made no sense
15:46 katsmeow-afk and it wasn't even the right bone
15:52 tsmeow-afk still wants to hook up a 2-liter bottle to a hidden flex hose such that opening the bottle at a traffic lite in a small car causes 30 liters of soft drink to be dispensed at high speed, like a fire
15:53 katsmeow-afk even a video from outside the car would be roflmao funny
15:54 katsmeow-afk unsuspecting humans would be soaked to the skin, soda could pour out of the car when the doors opened, if one window was open the bystanders would get hosed down
15:57 katsmeow-afk "father of the bride opened champagne, everyone in the room was soaked, video news at 6"
16:01 theBear hehe, i approve !
16:07 KongfuPanda hello :)
16:12 KongfuPanda (〜 ̄▽ ̄)〜
17:06 KongfuPanda ʕ·ᴥ·ʔ
17:10 katsmeow-afk whät?¿
17:12 KongfuPanda it's a bear
17:13 tsmeow-afk nods sl
17:14 katsmeow-afk clean stump is now 2ft shorter
17:15 tsmeow-afk wonders if any of the aussies here can find Rif so i can ask him solar cell quest
17:16 Tom_itx he may be in a _mood_
17:16 katsmeow-afk which mood?
17:17 Faek Its 8am where Rif is i think
17:18 katsmeow-afk so he has been up 3 hours and is already bored?
17:18 Faek No idea
17:18 tsmeow-afk bounces nerfs off the channel w
17:24 tsmeow-afk ponders someone at the fence of 1600 Penn Ave, walking slowly backwards, staring at the fence post, and counting down real slowly from 60, as an experiment in how long one can count down from 60 before being arre
18:53 delinquentme ok so difference between belts and chains?
18:53 delinquentme chains will have more consistent transfer right? ... say like with a stepper ... chain will be way more consistent?
18:54 delinquentme chains also will have less loostening over time right?
18:55 robotustra_ yes
18:55 ace4016 katsmeow-afk mentioned that chains will use up more power than belts however
18:55 ace4016 or maybe that was vice versa...
18:55 ace4016 i'm not very knowledgeable of mechanics :P
19:04 delinquentme yeah all other things more friction / heat in a chain
19:10 robotustra_ carbon belt
19:10 robotustra_ new featire
19:11 robotustra_ check this gay cite http://www.carbondrivesystems.com/
20:42 Tom_itx delinquentme, toothed belts are pretty consistent
22:18 katsmeow-afk chains need to be kept oiled, and they get noisier the faster they go
22:19 katsmeow-afk they keep stretching their entire life, and once past a certain point they no longer match the teeth in the sprockets, and yo can get severe sprocket tooth wear
22:20 katsmeow-afk that said, you can get roller chain with strength ratings into multiple tons
