00:05 GargantuaSauce_ oh nooo i missed the L how embarassing
00:07 GargantuaSauce_ but yeah it's this http://dx.com/p/jy-mcu-3208-lattice-clock-ht1632c-driver-with-mcu-support-secondary-development-104306
00:08 GargantuaSauce_ which has a little atmega8 on the back
00:08 GargantuaSauce_ nice way to test out the toolchain and shitty clone isp before sticking one on a protoboard
00:15 MrCurious nice
00:15 MrCurious the kid in me says yay! two plane rides in one day!
00:16 MrCurious the adult in me says fuckinell
00:18 GargantuaSauce_ yeah i hate the whole travelling process but love flying
00:32 MrCurious hometown is bringing back amazing flashbacks of every person i ever knew
00:32 MrCurious is this that DRAM feels like?
00:33 GargantuaSauce_ "oh! 0x3F! I had almost forgotten you! how's it going man?"
00:36 MrCurious ust glad its over
00:36 MrCurious taxing tryingreamed to me to recall all details for each face st
01:53 GuShH ace4016: do you have a lathe with dro?
04:16 GargantuaSauce_ oh fuck me i have a $500 dealextreme cart
04:50 GuShH GargantuaSauce_: this calls for an intervention
04:50 ShH idly orders a shrink from dx
04:51 GargantuaSauce_ i already have plenty of heatshrink from there
04:51 GuShH >_<
04:51 GuShH I actually got better deals on heatshrink at a local store
04:51 GuShH 20 meter rolls
04:51 GargantuaSauce_ yeah in bulk i can definitely see that being the case, i just wanted an assortment
04:52 GuShH I got an assortment from dx long time ago, didn't last too long
04:52 GuShH you soon realize you only ever use 2-3 sizes
04:53 GargantuaSauce_ but yeah turns out they have a bulkrate price for those servos http://dx.com/p/193069 http://dx.com/p/193284 that is pretty decent
04:53 GargantuaSauce_ so here i am buying 25
04:53 GuShH bah now I can make brackets like that in a few minutes
04:53 GuShH before, I would've ordered 'em
04:54 GuShH lol "robot servo"
04:54 GargantuaSauce_ i dont have any of the skills or equipment i need to work with aluminium, otherwise i'd be all over that
04:55 GuShH well depends on how many you need and whether you'd like to make custom parts or not
04:56 GargantuaSauce_ i am still gonna have to figure out something for the central frame, should be pretty easy to get a strip and bend it into a hexagon or octagon though
04:56 GuShH < 4 bucks is pretty cheap anyway
04:56 GuShH I think I would spend that much on the fasteners and the trip alone, or more
04:56 GargantuaSauce_ yeah they're 3 in bulk
04:57 GargantuaSauce_ i hope those are 3mm holes in the middle or i'm going to be doing a good bit of drilling...
04:57 GuShH neat http://dx.com/p/usb-2-0-almighty-flight-simulator-dongle-51480
04:57 GuShH I remember when these things were 200 bucks
04:58 GuShH GargantuaSauce_: why?
04:58 GargantuaSauce_ because all the bolts i have are m3
04:58 GuShH heh
04:59 GargantuaSauce_ well in quantity at least
04:59 GuShH they should be 3mm
04:59 GuShH I got like 500 nuts (m8 I think) for like 50 cents... It's good to have this sort of thing in bulk, but when am I going to use them? (on sale at local home improvement store)
05:00 GuShH low grade steel
05:00 GargantuaSauce_ fastenal is the only local place here that has a reasonable selection of metric stuff and it's pretty expensive
05:00 GuShH whenever you build something you soon find out you have every nut and bolt BUT the one you need.
05:01 GargantuaSauce_ yup
05:01 GuShH I wish I had a massive set of taps and dies... in HSS
05:01 GargantuaSauce_ i am finding that with things like electrical connectors too
05:01 ShH s
05:02 GargantuaSauce_ oh yeah i still havent figured out what i'm gonna do about the cubieboard
05:02 GargantuaSauce_ damn thing has 2mm headers
05:02 GuShH you'll have every nut bolt and tool you ever wanted once you reach a very old age, to which point you may not have enough energy left to make anything with them... you'll then die and your shit will be sold for beer money and you'll be forgotten in less than 50 years. LIFE.
05:02 GargantuaSauce_ probably just going to solder wires directly to the pins
05:02 GargantuaSauce_ woo life
05:03 GargantuaSauce_ man these servos are going to make my life easier
05:03 GuShH I don't like soldering anything directly but sometimes there's no other way and you just gotta get 'er done
05:03 GargantuaSauce_ then my hardest decision is gonna be 4dof hexapod or 3dof octopod
05:03 GuShH should be both, so it flips over and it's a hexapod, then it flips again and it's an octopod
05:03 GuShH win!
05:04 GargantuaSauce_ lol so i'll leave my current hexapod intact and put the octopod on its head
05:04 GargantuaSauce_ winner idea there, except the current one will definitely buckle under the extra weight
05:04 GargantuaSauce_ new one will probably handle it
05:04 GuShH robot meets radioactive source and somehow becomes mutant.
05:04 GuShH either that or unlucky sex ritual.
05:05 GuShH "it's funny because robots don't need to have sex"
05:05 GuShH http://dx.com/p/tobacco-tar-oil-for-electronic-cigarette-10ml-58529
05:06 GuShH I figure they make this stuff by recovering used cigarette filters and putting them in a hydraulic press, then a dude places a funnel into a bottle and presto.
05:06 ShH pukes up a li
05:06 GargantuaSauce_ yum
05:07 GuShH seriously what's in that stuff...
05:07 GuShH it's already bad enough you don't know what you're smoking (if you're a smoker) but those liquids... jeez.
05:07 ShH had a lapse of stupidity and used to smoke for a short w
05:08 GargantuaSauce_ i drunk-smoked a bit when i was in korea, when in rome and all that
05:08 GargantuaSauce_ still think it's disgusting but i can definitely see the appeal
05:09 GuShH Hrmmm
05:09 GuShH cigars are different
05:10 GargantuaSauce_ especially when...modified
05:10 GuShH I used to drink quite a lot, but it's a waste of money and you just ruin your body
05:10 GuShH modified how?
05:10 GargantuaSauce_ contents replaced
05:10 GuShH by what exactly?
05:10 ShH is not a dru
05:10 GuShH I mean at least a good cigar has a big amount of actual tobacco in it.
05:11 GuShH it's like coffee... cheap ground coffee has all sorts of crap, like soybean and sunflower seeds in it
05:12 GuShH hmm trying to figure out how to make the T mount .. (I don't have a mill) http://home.scarlet.be/mini-draaien-frezen/pdf/kartel-1.pdf
05:12 GargantuaSauce_ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Y72_XwDwE8
05:13 GargantuaSauce_ that mobility is fantastic
05:13 GuShH the arms I'll make in 3 separate parts, I guess... with tapped holes and allen screws... I could use a flat square for the T but it's not as strong
05:13 GuShH also it's not just having the mill... it's about having the milling tools as well, it's what gets you.
05:14 GuShH you end up spending more in endmills, vises, rotary tables, etc. than the actual mill.
05:14 GargantuaSauce_ yeah it strikes me as a huge timesink too
05:14 GuShH GargantuaSauce_: I can see the appeal in these robots, I just can't find a use for them.
05:14 GuShH timesink how?
05:14 GuShH TV is a timesink it gives you nothing in return
05:15 GargantuaSauce_ well requiring a lot of time and effort to produce results
05:15 GuShH yes and no
05:15 GuShH it means being able to produce ANYTHING without having to depend on others or having to wait for the mail to arrive
05:15 GargantuaSauce_ i guess i am more thinking of cnc mills but that is what i would build instead of a manual one
05:16 GuShH I was thinking of bridgeport mills and such
05:16 GuShH but smaller than an actual bridgeport (not everyone can both afford one and have the space for it)
05:16 GargantuaSauce_ yeah ok, in which case you just need to build knowledge and skill to apply it effectively
05:16 GuShH you can CNC them
05:17 GuShH But again CNC doesn't make sense for something like that knurler.
05:17 GuShH unless you wanted to put out many units
05:17 GuShH even then, you can mill small production runs if you parallel every part and perform a single operation on them
05:17 GargantuaSauce_ yeah
05:18 GuShH wish I lived in the US, since every company has been liquidating their machinery (Chiiinaa!!!) they're found rather cheapily over there, because well... they don't make anything anymore.
05:18 GuShH they just sit on their arse and order it from China.
05:18 GargantuaSauce_ anyway what i want to do with the hexapod is use it as a platform for working on some stupidly difficult computational problems
05:18 ShH points at GargantuaSa
05:18 GargantuaSauce_ :)
05:19 GuShH But other than that... it's for fun.
05:19 GargantuaSauce_ that is fun
05:20 GuShH GargantuaSauce_: do you plan on having an actual IK solver?
05:20 GargantuaSauce_ i do presently
05:20 GuShH because it seems most people just precompute and run sequences...
05:20 GuShH which I find lame.
05:20 GargantuaSauce_ yeah fuck that
05:21 GargantuaSauce_ but yeah what i have now uses ik
05:21 GargantuaSauce_ it's an analytic solution specific to the 3dof topology of its current construction though
05:22 GargantuaSauce_ i will make an iterative one if i go 4dof of course
05:22 GuShH you just meant to say you're cheating.
05:22 GargantuaSauce_ i wouldn't call it cheating, considering that i had to play algebra hero instead of just offloading 100% of the work to the cpu
05:23 GuShH kinda cheating.
05:23 ShH g
05:25 GargantuaSauce_ k then
05:25 GuShH CNC mill sounds appealing until you actually own or run one yourself. noisy, oily, messy, dirty, it's like having a kid I would imagine...
05:25 GargantuaSauce_ yeah and maintaining and tuning the damn thing
05:25 GargantuaSauce_ i built a reprap but havent touched it in months because it's a damn pain in the ass to keep it working right
05:26 ShH whis
05:26 GuShH You should sell it
05:26 GargantuaSauce_ well and i upgraded it to a 3 colour version which suffered from shit software and firmware, it's probably gotten better now though
05:26 GuShH some sucker will be all over it and you'll recover some of your money
05:26 GargantuaSauce_ nah i'll take another crack at it soon probably
05:26 GuShH bah I thought cheaters were also quitters
05:27 ShH h
05:27 GargantuaSauce_ a thing on my bucket list is replacing the tarduino-based electronics with something of my own devising
05:27 GuShH I should upset everyone so they end up throwing robot parts at me and eventually I'll have enough of them to rule the world.
05:30 GargantuaSauce_ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Od0NYLE_ohk
05:30 GargantuaSauce_ think i'll make a stewart platform or two with my current set of servos
05:31 GargantuaSauce_ funny how the video says 6 dof when it's clearly only using 3
05:32 GuShH steel construction or just pained alu?
05:32 GuShH looks like steel though
05:34 GuShH see I'm more interested in the mechanical aspect than anything else...
05:34 GargantuaSauce_ and that is the part that largely baffles me
05:34 GargantuaSauce_ i think we'd make a good team!
05:34 GargantuaSauce_ you should clearly uproot your life and move here
05:34 GuShH if you're paying for it...
05:35 GargantuaSauce_ let me run it by the accounting department
05:35 GuShH I can't even fathom the idea. I moved about 30KM and it took me months, ended up depressed as hell
05:36 GuShH imagine having to sell everything you own...
05:36 GargantuaSauce_ yeah i can see that sucking
05:40 GargantuaSauce_ man etching my own PCBs is so damn overdue
05:41 GuShH don't worry it's very easy!
05:43 GargantuaSauce_ well the mcu i want to use is .5mm pitch
05:43 GargantuaSauce_ bit of a learning curve there i think, a few stops to make along the way...
05:44 GuShH using ferric?
05:44 GargantuaSauce_ that's what i have, i could get my hands on hcl or whatever though
05:44 GuShH toner transfer?
05:44 GargantuaSauce_ i havent decided
05:45 GargantuaSauce_ i dont have a laser printer so that isnt the obvious solution
05:45 GuShH stay with the ferric
05:45 GargantuaSauce_ considering photoresist
05:45 GuShH you can use a photocopier set to high contrast though
05:45 GuShH or a friend with a laser printer :p
05:45 GargantuaSauce_ i am gonna run it past the engineering department at uni, they're setting up a "fab lab"
05:46 GargantuaSauce_ i havent heard mention of pcb etching but maybe they're looking at setting something up
05:47 GargantuaSauce_ and then again come to think of it for the boards i'll end up wanting to make self-serve might not cut it
05:47 GargantuaSauce_ might need four layers and/or lots of vias
05:47 GuShH send them out to china then
05:47 GargantuaSauce_ yeah
05:47 GargantuaSauce_ just need to know what i'm doing first
05:48 GargantuaSauce_ bootstrapping problem!
05:48 ace4016 GuShH, i wish i had a lathe...and a lot of other tools
05:48 GuShH just trying to find someone with a dro to ask about iGaging stuff
05:51 GuShH holy crap.. sprinkles for today, rain for saturday, sunday, monday...
06:41 GargantuaSauce_ http://dx.com/p/185183
06:42 GuShH who knew... steel blackening is really simple, although I haven't tried on big parts yet
06:42 GuShH GargantuaSauce_: bit expensive ...
06:43 GargantuaSauce_ yeah otherwise i'd be tempted
06:44 GuShH heh
06:44 GuShH so blackening works as a somewhat anti-corrosion coating?
06:45 GuShH is it merely a film of carbon or is there something else going on...
06:46 GargantuaSauce_ isn't it copper oxide or something
06:47 GuShH where is the copper coming from?
06:47 GuShH I mean cold steel + motoroil
06:47 GuShH sorry, mild steel.
06:47 GuShH (I was thinking cold rolled, as the piece I tried was...)
06:47 GuShH I didn't need to bring it red hot, just hot enough so the oil would smoke and I got a perfect black finish
06:48 GuShH haven't tried with linseed oil since I don't have any.
08:35 rue_bed when is/was dst adjust?
09:03 GuShH rue_bed: dunno, I think the cleaning lady moved another knob
09:37 rue_house heh, large non-antistatic sticker plastered on the circuit board "QC PASSED"
10:31 GuShH rue_bed: http://whyfiles.org/2013/got-gears-lets-leap-says-the-leafhopper/
13:37 MrCurious Make... More.... Robots....
13:39 sw0rdfish ???
13:42 GuShH MrCurious: have you finished at least one robot yet?
13:42 GuShH a webcam stuck to a servo stuck to an arduino stuck to some tupperware is NOT a robot!
13:44 GuShH http://www.43oh.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/msp430_launchpad_robot_tupperware.jpg ... close enough
13:59 MrCurious GuShH: have YOU!
13:59 MrCurious tuppperwarebot gonna hunt you down
13:59 MrCurious and i already explored the tupperwear path. not workable
14:00 MrCurious how is that tupperwear lathe stand comming along? all glued up?
14:15 GuShH heh
16:57 MarkX hi
16:58 MarkX i haven't ever worked/used/learned about PID before but it appears i must use it for my next project
16:59 MarkX is PID loop control able to move a dc motor to a specific position at a certain speed?
16:59 MarkX or would that require bringing pwm into the mix?
17:02 GargantuaSauce_ you'd use the pid loop to control the duty cycle of the motor
17:02 GargantuaSauce_ so yes pwm would be involved
17:31 MarkX GargantuaSauce_: so since i'm using the duty cycle, i can dictate what speed i wannt the motor to turn
17:32 MarkX is that right?
17:35 GargantuaSauce_ with closed-loop control yes
18:52 robotustra http://ca.finance.yahoo.com/blogs/pay-day-/tiny-toronto-home-sells-165-000-171819404.html
18:55 GargantuaSauce_ that's smaller than my living room
18:55 GargantuaSauce_ and i do not have a big apartment
18:58 GuShH robotustra: wtf?
19:00 GuShH darn, can't find bridgeport mills on the cheap... the cheapest one costs twice as much as a bench mill (used)
19:00 GuShH and they're more glorified drill presses than mills IMO
19:02 GuShH http://bimg1.mlstatic.com/fresadora-graf_MLA-F-4153198726_042013.jpg >_<
19:03 GuShH of course the one I've been offered doesn't have the stand with the coolant pump...
19:07 GuShH 3phase with vfd most likely just 1hp
19:09 GargantuaSauce_ avrdude done. Thank you.
19:09 GargantuaSauce_ it's so courteous
20:10 GuShH bah I don't think I'll ever find anything better
20:15 MrCurious he had to go make a tupper-ware-lathe-robot
20:19 GuShh_ MrCurious: no
20:21 GuShh_ looking at a benchtop milling machine
20:21 GuShh_ pfft
20:24 GuShh_ MrCurious1: fail
20:26 MrCurious1 ?
20:26 MrCurious1 i missed how i failed, ,i was too busy failing
20:26 MrCurious1 hows that tupperware lathe stand coming along
20:33 GuShh_ MrCurious1: was making one of these http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=tn7A9PqNftY
20:40 GuShh_ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uans3Q_Mb94 yeah!!
20:43 robotustra it's not presize drilling
20:44 GuShh_ robotustra: ...
20:44 robotustra barrels drilling is a masterpiece
20:44 GuShh_ you should eat something.
20:44 robotustra thanks
20:44 robotustra or drink, yes
20:44 GuShh_ gun barrels are not just drilled.
20:45 robotustra I know
20:45 robotustra but the drillling is crucial
20:45 GuShh_ this is not a weapon
20:45 GuShh_ it's a flange where bolts go through
20:45 robotustra yes, just heavy dirty job
20:46 robotustra in machine shop
20:46 GuShh_ gun barrels are bored, reamed and honed, at least once. often twice, after rifling.
20:46 GuShh_ and not just that, also aligned
20:46 GuShh_ every step bends it ever so slightly so it needs to be rectified
20:46 robotustra did you make gun barrels?
20:46 GuShh_ what do you care!
20:47 GuShh_ go watch fpsrussia while the rest of us do real things, pfft
20:47 robotustra or at least read the book about technology?
20:47 GuShh_ technology is irrelevant. lots of manufacturers are still using 100 year old machinery
20:47 GuShh_ it's the attention to detail and quality control that matters
20:47 robotustra I'm pretty sure that you don't know even it
20:47 GuShh_ I'm pretty sure you can't even express yourself.
20:48 robotustra even 100 years old
20:48 GuShh_ I'm not talking about mainstream such as glock, everything is heavily automated and they come out like candy.
20:48 robotustra recenlty I read the booc about manufacturing og barrels
20:48 GuShh_ precision is not paramount on these small handguns compared to a proper hunting rifle.
20:49 robotustra glock? 3.5" drilling?
20:49 robotustra you are kidding me
20:49 GuShh_ who said drilling and who mentioned any sizes whatsoever
20:49 robotustra what about 50-80 cm drilling?
20:49 GuShh_ barrel dimensions are relevant to the caliber and application
20:49 GuShh_ robotustra: reading simply means you absorbed what some other dipshit wrote down, it means absolutely nothing in the real world.
20:49 GuShh_ You don't have experience.
20:49 robotustra ok
20:49 GuShh_ Academics can suck my dick.
20:50 GuShh_ Except I would get AIDs.
20:50 robotustra it's not an academic who whote this book
20:50 GuShh_ You need to learn how not to mix irrelevant subjects.
20:51 robotustra for instance you and me
20:51 GuShh_ a pipe fitting / flange or coupler for a driveshaft has nothing to do with firearms.
20:52 robotustra does anybody in here did Beaglebone blach GPIO programming?
20:55 GuShh_ robotustra: when you have a flange you register the two mating surfaces with at least one shoulder, the "precision" of bolt holes is irrelevant to this application, they're just holes so torque may be applied throughout the radius of the coupler via nuts and bolts. Plus those bits are machined specifically for the required bolt size, based on standards that have been around way before your dad was born.
20:55 GuShh_ Your thing is tiny purpose-less parts, stick with that.
20:56 Shh_ walks away, there's one too many armchair machinist in the channel right no
21:02 e_house leans over on his armchair to read what gush
21:02 rue_house you dont need precision, use a gasket!
21:03 MrCurious1 is it safe to machine from outside an armchair?
21:03 MrCurious1 cant you get your neck beard caught or something?
21:03 rue_house safty procedures have changed in the last 50 years
21:04 rue_house today you need to wear so much safety gear, that nothings safe
21:04 robotustra yeah possum can get into machining zone
21:04 robotustra and be rolled on the drillbit
21:05 rue_house keep possum out of recepticles
21:08 robotustra out of testicles
21:09 rue_house off to the store with you
21:10 robotustra :)
21:18 MrCurious1 perhaps this tupperwear taunt could be turned around and owned
21:19 MrCurious1 and a new bot creation category....
21:19 MrCurious1 they are stackaboe... stick together
21:19 MrCurious1 impose a common buss for then
