02:05 MrCurious one of those quiet nights i see
02:05 MrCurious nair even a mention of a mill/lathe
02:05 Faek Mill!!!!! LATHE!!!!!
02:07 MrCurious faek-ing mill-lathe!!!!
02:07 MrCurious my apple magic mouse is working acceptably with my linux laptop
02:23 GargantuaSauce http://xn--d-bga.su/hazard.png
02:23 GargantuaSauce god damn i'm stupid sometimes
02:23 GargantuaSauce used a ripple counter with a decoder
03:31 SleepersTide RifRaf and Jak_o_Shadows, look what I found: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__41919__Blue_Arrow_3g_50kg_06sec_High_Speed_Digital_MG_Micro_Servo.html
03:32 SleepersTide a 2.5g-size servo with decent torque
03:33 RifRaf blue arrow is a nice brand, or was 10 years ago, and costly
03:34 SleepersTide yeah, people still say nice things about them
03:34 SleepersTide and they're only relatively costly
03:34 RifRaf still have a few micro ones from when i was into model planes, and probably paid about $40 each back then
03:34 SleepersTide I've seen robotics servos that cost 18 times what those do :P
03:34 RifRaf they stay in a box for a special project one day
03:47 Jak_o_Shadows apparently if you leave the page open a while you get a discount
03:53 SleepersTide Jak_o_Shadows: yeah, they go down to $5.51 from $5.94
03:53 Faek WORTH IT!
03:53 SleepersTide which is not insignificant if you're buying 18 of them
09:22 rue_house RifRaf, how did your home made solar panels work out?
13:37 -rajaniemi.freenode.net:#robotics- [freenode-info] please register your nickname...don't forget to auto-identify! http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#nicksetup
14:45 untivity is listening silent
14:46 eBear listens lo
14:47 untivity is waiting for someone to talk about anythi
14:49 untivity wonders if GuShH still hating ac
14:50 theBear lol
15:23 ckkitten idly bounces on the cei
15:55 GuShH theBear: hmm took the motor assembly off, the lower bearing if I move the shaft I can see 0.7cm displacement or so
15:55 GuShH it's stuffed... the one on top has play but not as bad
15:56 theBear damn, that's a lotta play
15:56 GuShH now, the lower gearbox assembly has side play, massive. I haven't been able to take it apart yet
15:56 GuShH I'm hoping it's another bearing
15:56 GuShH that side play could've caused the jam
15:57 GuShH it was on a bind that wouldn't let me move any of the parts, or unlock the gearbox to manually move the gate
15:57 GuShH surprisingly they've used stainless steel allen bolts on the front of the gearbox, but everywhere else they used regular steel... and they've rusted badly
15:58 GuShH someone had previously snapped one of the screws, might have to remove it... I think this calls for taking the whole unit off and bringing it inside
15:58 GuShH wonder if the 220 underground wire has a separate breaker that I don't know of
15:59 GuShH don't mind working live, but I do mind leaving a live wire and a neutral exposed, this is not a wire-nut country either!
15:59 ShH
15:59 GuShH sighs even
15:59 theBear snapped screws in metal gates SUCK ! i dealt with a few over the years, the screws are always 'harder' than the gate around them, you seldom got an option to move things without leaving ugly holes or causing things not to align
17:19 GuShH theBear: yeah but it's the screw for one of the plastic covers, so not much space to fool around, if I can't remove it using a vise grip and some penetrating oil I'll have to take the entire enclosure off (means removing all the wiring) and bring it to the drill press, after grinding the screw down level, center punching and then drill through... I could go one size up or two, that's doable. then tap and be done with it, do it t
17:19 GuShH o the rest if you want it to look good or leave as is... but that's not a problem right now
17:19 GuShH just finished taking the gearbox apart
17:19 GuShH surprise... water.
17:20 GuShH the o-ring got all emo on me and decided to let water in, plus the oxygen = rust, which mixed with the grease sludge to make a poor man's grinding compound, which ate through the bushings which caused the massive play which caused it to bind. yey...
17:20 theBear oooh, you got a magnetic drillpress ?
17:20 GuShH two bushings in the horizontal shaft, two bearings on the motor shaft. I thought they would use bearings everywhere
17:20 GuShH no, not magnetic. means having to take the thing to the press instead of taking the press to the thing :p
17:21 GuShH there's some type of clutch assembly as well
17:21 GuShH the main shaft is hollow and has three holes for ball bearings to pop out of, inside there's another shaft that acts as a plunger, spring loaded
17:21 theBear oh
17:21 GuShH I know how the mechanism works, as it engages the drive gear when the plunger is on the right position
17:21 theBear i used to love using the magnetic one when i was a builder
17:22 GuShH but how does it actually work as a safety mechanism if the load is not pushing against it?
17:22 GuShH anyway those three balls are in pretty bad shape, will need to replace them as well.
17:22 GuShH I thought they would just use a keyed shaft like on motors
17:23 theBear it's called a rack
17:23 GuShH you know, with a woodruff
17:23 theBear i think that's what you mean
17:24 theBear now you just making up words :)
17:24 GuShH I mean key and keyway.
17:24 GuShH mr woodruff came up with the "half moon" design didn't he
17:24 GuShH the idea is that it allows you to safely couple two elements and have a degree of safety based on the softness of the key
17:25 theBear i dunno, it sounds like a cartoon dogs name
17:25 GuShH but that's not what they did here, there's some sort of clutch action going on
17:25 GuShH similar, but different.
17:25 theBear oooh, i'll remember in a minute, i know that trick
17:25 GuShH as it can be engaged or not, based on vertical force (to me irrelevant here, as the load is horizontal?)
17:25 GuShH anyWHO ... wonder where to find a plastic / o-ring seal like the one they used.... and the bushings
17:26 GuShH which currently dance on the shaft
17:26 GuShH if I had the stock, and the lathe in one piece... I'd just make them
17:27 GuShH theBear: http://training.bsc.com.au/Training/A9000/A9026/woodruff.gif
17:27 GuShH heh .au, I swear it wasn't intentional.
17:27 GuShH but it was the best illustration
17:27 GuShH don't ask me what's the difference between A and B, I don't know.
17:27 GuShH A possibly gives up with less force?
17:28 ShH sh
17:28 GuShH so now instead of one of those, we have 3 holes evenly spaced on the shaft, with steel balls poking out and being pushed in and out by a tapered shaft from within
17:28 GuShH what do you call that?
17:29 GuShH I should bust out the machinists handbook..
17:30 theBear that happens a lot recently
17:30 theBear the .au thing
17:31 GuShH how come
17:31 theBear i dunno, just like you didn't know
17:32 GuShH bah bah bah
17:32 theBear lol
17:32 theBear err, black sheep, have you any wool
17:35 GuShH well the brass wormgear happens to reside on a plastic coupler, odd.
17:35 GuShH the gear looks quite good
17:35 GuShH wonder if I'll be able to remove the motor shaft and thus replace the bearings, specially the lower one, without destroying it.
17:35 GuShH and by it I mean the cast aluminum housing or the shaft.
17:36 GuShH feels like that goo-aluminum they love to use in china
17:44 GuShH holy crap that's some heavy pitting on the shaft
17:45 GuShH the pics actually show some wear I wasn't able to feel by hand, interesting.
17:47 GuShH theBear: http://gushh.net/tmp/dscn3974f.jpg
17:48 GuShH the heavy rusting makes sense, it happened between the bushings where the sludge was mainly at.
17:48 GuShH (had to use emery cloth -220 grit or so- to remove everything)
17:49 GuShH looks like the brass gear is pressed onto a nylon coupler...
17:50 GuShH oh I think I get the "clutch" now, is it that the more force you apply to this type of gear, the more it pushes the shaft back?
17:50 GuShH that would explain everything, as the increased force would push it back causing the clutch to disingage, saving the entire mechanism.
17:51 ShH stares at Tom
17:51 theBear that sounds likely, i can't concentrate thismorning... any idea what http://motocrossactionmag.com/Uploads/Public/Images/...........AUGUST%2010/ossaen3.jpg the big curly up the top right above the engine thing is ?
17:52 GuShH could be part of the tuned exhaust if it's 2 stroke
17:52 GuShH we call 'em "pipe"
17:52 GuShH (tuned for the right amount of back-pressue for the specific engine and setup)
17:52 GuShH never seen one like that though.
17:53 theBear i know how tunin goes, and it's interesting double injector 2 stroke, but that thing just looks way too big for the engine
17:53 GuShH automated stainless welds
17:53 theBear http://twostrokemotocross.com/2011/11/ossa-250300-i-the-future-of-enduro/ for reference
17:53 GuShH but that's what it is for sure.
17:53 GuShH theBear: well, you may know... others reading may not, so it makes the conversation more interesting?
17:55 GuShH my brother has an RM125 (he always bitched he wants a 250, I bitch he doesn't use it at all so why would he want a bigger engine...) I never really went a step up from my first bike which was (and still is) a 50cc, but hey I've been involved with them ever since I remember.
17:55 GuShH big fan of 2 stroke
17:55 GuShH you should see the technology used on the newest stihl chainsaw engines
17:56 GuShH injection and very interesting design
17:56 GuShH they even have an ECU now
17:56 ShH snic
17:57 theBear damn, technology eh
17:57 GuShH http://fs7.motosport.com/is/image/Motosport/PCW-RM-125-04_is?$NewPDP2$
17:57 GuShH that's the expansion pipe from an RM125
17:57 GuShH it's quite massive as well.
17:57 theBear interesting, indeed
17:57 GuShH small engines, but they put out a lot of hp
17:57 theBear yeah, tight powerband blah blah
17:58 GuShH yada yada bing boom.
17:58 theBear well, tight superpower band
17:58 GuShH and off you go like a fart when you step on it.
17:58 GuShH love them. I was looking at street / enduro bikes... they're all 4 stroke now
17:59 GuShH xtz125
17:59 GuShH but it doesn't even have a rear disc brake, the hell.
18:00 theBear what, back to drums ? or just a single ?
18:00 theBear hehe]
18:00 GuShH http://p1.bikepics.com/2009/09/08/bikepics-1775890-full.jpg
18:00 GuShH it's a drum on the rear
18:00 GuShH annoys the living shit out of me to see that kind of thing
18:00 GuShH when india and china are giving you dual discs for less than half the price (I know they're death trap bikes, but still)
18:01 GuShH it's an enduro man, have some decency.
18:01 GuShH well, a pseudo enduro bike... it's good for street and basic offroad, nothing else.
18:02 theBear heh
18:03 theBear ooh, that does look a bit err, like how supermarket/costco kinda bmx and mtbs have a sticker "not for offroad use or jumps"
18:03 GuShH lol
18:03 GuShH the real deal costs about 4 times more, at least.
18:03 GuShH but they're not street legal.
18:04 theBear generally not :) but that's just laughable
18:04 GuShH I can't believe they used a nylon housing for the gearbox on this thing
18:05 GuShH http://gushh.net/tmp/dscn3972f.jpg
18:05 GuShH not sure if it's nylon but you get the idea, it's crap.
18:05 theBear fwoo totally
18:05 GuShH why bother with a beefy shaft at all?
18:06 theBear lol
18:06 theBear i was born that way i guess
18:06 GuShH haha
18:06 GuShH with a rusty shaft?
18:06 theBear lol, no ! beefy
18:07 ShH p
18:07 GuShH for the record you degenerated the conversation, not me!
18:07 theBear it's true, but you certainly didn't curb it <grin>
18:07 GuShH ...wish I had a better circlip plier (or whatever you call them) this one barely makes it with big circlips
18:08 theBear kinda busy, too many channels today
18:08 theBear mine aren't huge (i been wishing for MANY yearss until recent too) but got 3 adapters for various inside/outside angle/ blah, i like em a lot
18:08 GuShH bah I need to document all this stuff so I can find replacements of the bushings, bearings, seals...
18:09 GuShH yeah it has adapters, but it's not "beefy" for this sort of big stuff
18:09 GuShH of course, beats using screwdrivers or whatever (and having them fly off the room never to be found again)
18:09 theBear i spose, i guess big-gate ones like that aint cheap even today
18:09 theBear totally, or to be found after WAY too long searchign
18:09 GuShH the good ones are fixed size... they aren't cheap
18:09 theBear it's like hiking/whatever "i've gone too far to give up now !"
18:09 GuShH lol
18:10 GuShH so you are later found dead under a rock?
18:10 theBear no, so you waste half a day looking for the circlip
18:11 GuShH I think the focus is off on this camera ever since it got dropped...
18:13 GuShH oh the lower bearing is a radial... interesting, makes sense although I'm not sure I got the numbers right hrrm
18:14 GuShH still, would've expected something better.
18:45 GuShH theBear: such a fool.. I disregarded the manual override, it's a camshaft and that's what the clutch is for... to disingage the gearbox coupling heh
18:45 GuShH AND this explains why it wasn't working either, because of the rusted balls
18:45 GuShH full circle motha fucka
18:46 theBear hehe
21:29 MrCurious the weekend is here!
21:29 MrCurious 5 days of chillaxation
21:31 GargantuaSauce that is a long weekend
21:31 GargantuaSauce not as long as my weekend though
21:31 MrCurious oh?
21:32 GargantuaSauce all 4 months of it
21:32 MrCurious thats a weekend!
21:32 GargantuaSauce yeeup
21:32 MrCurious bet the hangover from it is going to suck
21:33 GargantuaSauce i'll probably be raring to do something more structured long before it ends
21:33 GargantuaSauce so how's your telepresence monolith coming along anyway
21:51 MrCurious stalled
21:52 MrCurious i got a new computer that isnt a mac, and it is causing growing pains
21:54 robotustra MrCurious: 5 days of hard work on robot
21:55 robotustra I think it was done so that you can't use macos on it
22:00 GuShH robotustra: or he just sucks at hackintoshing.
22:04 MrCurious i suck at hackintoshing. its only my second try
22:05 MrCurious uname -a
22:05 GuShH what happened to your first try?
22:05 MrCurious quad core amd. worked great
22:18 MrCurious well that linux kernel did not want to be my friend
22:20 MrCurious lets see if this kernel crashes when it sleeps whilel a BT mouse is connected :)
22:21 MrCurious that will be a yes
22:25 GuShH MrCurious: quit wasting your time with opensource shit.
22:25 GuShH speaking of which bbl
22:26 GargantuaSauce my move machine is coming along nicely
22:26 GargantuaSauce just need to wire up like 80 more connections and the control/register board is done
22:27 MrCurious1 i think i will call that the apple magic mouse of sleepy linux death
22:28 GargantuaSauce those mice are kind of infuriating anyway
22:32 MrCurious1 yup. death by mouse
22:33 MrCurious1 meh, fix it tomorrow. time for some skyrim
23:49 MrCurious1 wonder what rue_* has been up to lately
23:53 theBear rue_house, you got carpet ?
23:53 rue_house some
23:54 theBear any idea about long term periodic cleaning ? just kinda relivening/brightening the high traffic areas every few years ?
23:54 rue_house I dont vacuum mine nearly as much as I should
23:55 theBear heh, i shocked myself thinking about this the other night, i actually considered 'no shoes on the carpet rule' <grin>
23:55 rue_house and I'm long overdue to take a cleaner to it for all the places that have had evil things done by the animals
23:55 theBear i vacuum mine NEARLY as much as i should, but this is just kinda you know, like the entry/'hall' area where most of the shoe dirt lands, and under my desk here where my feet or shoes ALWAYS are
23:56 theBear i get strangely house-proud when rent inspections come up, and there's one soon.. the carpet is easily acceptable/passable, but i feel a need to impress, kinda makes me feel slightly grownup, which i don't get or even like often :)
23:57 rue_house :)
23:57 rue_house I nonaly own, but installed the damned carpet myself... well, half of it
23:57 rue_house and I know to never install carpet myself again
23:59 rue_house the installers I got to do the other half had it installed before we noticed them arrive, we didn't notice them leave either
23:59 rue_house and they PERFECTLY seamed the new carpet to the oldest price-of-trash carpet in the hosue
