00:00 RifRaf might have a wobble and be off center
00:01 RifRaf but yep take it back if if cannot drill an m3
00:07 GuShH RifRaf: mild steel 4mm thick, it wobbled, drew a spiral and snapped.
00:08 GuShH with a 3.5mm bit and without center punching, going very slow at first... I managed to drill, but there's a lot of wobble... and vibration
00:08 GuShH it's not the motor, without the belt there's no vibration from the motor
00:08 GuShH runs true and nicely
00:08 GuShH with the pulley the motor vibrates as the mount flexes, but I think the pulley is dry/old and deformed as well
00:08 GuShH there's already dust inside the pulley cover!
00:09 GuShH there's a safety switch on the door... nice feature, although it's a bit annoying
00:09 GuShH door/cover
00:10 GuShH the chuck and spindle seems to run true, but I'll indicate it next.
00:10 GuShH it's not a morse taper.. it's a J-something-something
00:10 GuShH standard though.
00:11 SleepersTide are you sure your drillbit was sharp?
00:11 GuShH it was brand new as I said.
00:11 GuShH both were.
00:11 GuShH actually a dull bit won't grab
00:11 RifRaf a bit drillbit, chipped end or something?
00:11 GuShH if I have to center-drill, there's no point in having this thing.
00:12 RifRaf bad*
00:12 GuShH RifRaf: it cracked by the unmachined portion of the shaft
00:12 GuShH I mean, right where the spiral begins
00:12 GuShH couldn't find the other part, flew off far away.
00:12 GuShH looks like they're HSS...
00:13 GuShH quite frankly I've only seen people break bits (using hand-drills) but I never managed it in all these years, you get a feel for when it's flexing
00:15 GuShH ok so the quill has massive play when the grubscrew is not set tight, but if it's set too tight, it won't budge (pretty much like a gib would)
00:16 GuShH still, that's not the spinning portion and doesn't explain the vibrations
00:17 GuShH RifRaf: ... how can I drill if I have to take it apart to figure out what's wrong! it's not my fault china hates me...
00:19 RifRaf you may need to check everything is set right
00:19 RifRaf must be something loose
00:25 GuShH RifRaf: nothing obvious so far
00:25 GuShH price wise, pretty good deal even if the vise it came with is just 2 1/2"
00:25 GuShH the others were the same unit but rebranded, more expensive and no vise (in another shop)
00:26 GuShH if you look at the castings, where each screw goes, etc... it's clear they all came from the same factory.
00:26 GuShH hard to tell if they all had the same overall "quality" but this one even has the chip guard
00:26 GuShH and the others didn't
00:27 GuShH to be fair it's like the guard on angle grinders, you often take it out...
00:27 GuShH for clearence purposes
00:29 GuShH tried out the expensive version, it's massive by comparison and costs 6 times as much, it really felt heavy duty but I can't afford that!
00:36 GuShH http://gushh.net/tmp/dscn3923f.jpg not sure what's up with all the dripping grease but they all looked the same, why pay more for a brand instead of quality? neither one had a light or anything else that would've made me want to pay more either... This one is the equivalent of "Central Machinery" from Harbor Freight except it's probably even older than what they're selling now adays (oh well)
00:37 GuShH by the way the vibrations are from within the machine and have nothing to do with the fact that I haven't mounted it on a bench yet
00:42 RifRaf sorry am not watching screen, the most common reason i break a bit is vibration, i can cut several kilometers from a bit if i avoid vibration, one loose corner though and snap
01:42 MrCurious any desi's around?
01:56 MrCurious Bob Loblaw, paging Bob Loblaw
02:53 GuShH hrm
02:54 GuShH belt broke in, vibrations lowered down... on the other hand after about 10 holes on mild steel the motor was piping hot
02:59 GuShH I'd say over 60°C
02:59 GuShH no thermal protection that I can see... might be worth adding a bimetal switch
03:00 GuShH there could be a thermal fuse near the windings, haven't opened it up to see... fans for instance do have those
05:36 kolaman hi all, I have started studying quantum computing and want to write code in that regard (I have a bit of knowledge of python only) what is the preferrred way to get going
06:09 Faek Why did he ask that here?
06:16 Hukka My guess is "bad troll"
08:45 zoplrdb \o/ /o/ \o\ \o/
14:14 GuShH well... I indicated the drill press... got 0.02mm runout on spindle (great!) but around 1mm on the chuck with no loading, almost 2mm with loading... that's problem number 1. problem 2 is the grub screw wasn't machined properly so it wasn't riding on the quill slot, problem 3 is there's just one grubscrew, there should be at least two, ideally 3 with a gib... problem 4 is the slot is not perfectly flat, so the grub screw doesn't
14:14 GuShH apply the same force throughout the 5cm range... I know it's not a precision machine whatsoever, but about 2mm runout on any chuck is unusable for steel and the reason why the bits wander off or snap, even with a center hole.
14:14 GuShH I still have 2 days to try it out / get a replacement, but the replacement may be even worse...
19:39 MarkX hey
19:40 MarkX i know this is a stretch, but does anyone know any irc channels specific to USB device programming?
19:45 ace4016 not particularly
19:45 ace4016 you'd have to find a channel with a high probability of USB developers, such as ##electronics and hope that percentage that programs USB is on
19:46 MarkX yea, i tried ##electronics, not much luck
19:46 MarkX oh well, off to the forums i go then
19:47 ace4016 o/
20:01 rue_house wouldn't abc_miniuser in #avr be 'a usb developer' ?
20:03 rue_house :/ i lost my list
21:20 R0b0t1 bastard
21:20 R0b0t1 get back here
21:22 GuShH rue_house: the black list?
21:23 MrCurious he will rue this day!
21:23 Curious shakes f
21:23 GuShH rueeee youuuu
21:23 GuShH why is youtube suggesting arduino videos
21:24 robotustra to irritate you
21:24 Faek Vause you are a dirty arduino lover
21:25 R0b0t1 I got a coupe of free, shitty android phones. I am wondering if they'd make a good head to an otherwise headless system
21:25 GuShH half inch is standard on sockets these days?
21:25 GuShH why does it look bigger than what I have...
21:26 MrCurious because it knows you could learn from them
21:26 MrCurious why dont you want to learn GuShH
21:26 GuShH also I thought DOWIDAT was a German company, but it says Made in Argentina and the clerk casually said "these are old, the company doesn't exist anymore, take them"
21:26 GuShH MrCurious: learn what exactly?
21:26 R0b0t1 He's too angsty to learn
21:26 ShH shakes
21:27 MrCurious that is for you to find out!
21:34 RifRaf GuShH, did you take the drill back, surely they cannot expect you to use a drill that doesn't
21:35 RifRaf use one of there new drill bits to show emhow bad it is
21:37 Tom_itx 3/8 is standard as is 1/2
21:38 Tom_itx as is 3/4 and 1" drive if you get into heavy equipment
21:41 MrCurious always pisses me off at lumber yards to buy 1" thick only to find its 3/4 its always 1/4 less than your billed for
21:41 Tom_itx it's sanded
21:41 Tom_itx and it's not 3/4 anymore either
21:41 Tom_itx well, some may be
21:43 Tom_itx mill cut, it may be 1"
21:43 MrCurious suppose
21:43 Tom_itx but do you really want all those splinters?
21:43 Tom_itx old homes have rough cut lumber in them
21:44 MrCurious no. i want truth in advertising. when i look for 3/4 2 side finished, sell me 3/4 2 side sanded just charge me for 1" + milling
21:44 MrCurious nothing more annoying to discover this fact at home...
21:44 Tom_itx you're not a carpenter
21:45 MrCurious no
21:45 Tom_itx or you would know these things
21:45 MrCurious lots of things i am not. but it doesnt stop me from playing them
21:45 MrCurious like engineers who think they can program because they read a book on C once
21:46 Tom_itx i'm not an engineer nor did i read to it's entirety a book on c but i can program a bit of it
21:46 MrCurious see. you like to pretend too!
21:46 MrCurious and you are probably good at it
21:46 Tom_itx no, i'm just that good
21:47 Tom_itx :D
21:47 Tom_itx </sarchasm>
21:47 theBear i'm awesome at programming, but it took 1000's and 1000's of hours
21:48 MrCurious seriously? 16 hours and done?
21:48 Tom_itx i can do almost anything i set my mind to
21:49 MrCurious one of those eh
21:49 MrCurious a renaissance man...
21:49 Tom_itx there are a few things i steer clear of though
21:49 GuShH RifRaf: well, what if the replacement is worse than this one
21:50 Tom_itx i'd rather fix something myself than pay someone to do a half ass job for me
21:50 MrCurious i steer clear of high voltage. over time i have learned i am an excellent conductor
21:50 Tom_itx up to residential mains doesn't bother me a bit
21:50 GuShH plus I almost got in a fight with the dipshit security guard, he stopped me and asked for the receipt, like I'm some kind of thief, that just pissed me off, next time I'll kick his ass.
21:50 Tom_itx industrial stuff i don't mess with
21:51 GuShH gave me some lame excuse about keeping track of inventory, what a bunch of bs
21:51 Tom_itx i've wired quite a few outlets 'live'
21:51 GuShH I pulled several receipts out of my wallet, I visit that store almost every week, and buy almost every week.
21:51 Tom_itx not recomended... but i'm a careful sort
21:51 GuShH On the other hand, they have no right to ask me for anything
21:52 theBear half inch is standard for big sockets, always has been, but not much smaller than half inch generally
21:52 theBear the socket that is, the other side
21:52 MrCurious i dont like 220. nor do i like 110 powered transformers... they sting
21:52 GuShH 380
21:52 GuShH theBear: !
21:53 theBear wtf you power your transformers with then
21:54 theBear and 240 ain't that bad, it only really starts to hurt after about 400, 415vac really hurts
21:54 theBear and 800vdc REALLY hurts, like getting kicked by a clydesdale
21:54 MrCurious that PC power supply i probed barefoot with a screwdriver made me gyrate
21:54 Tom_itx i really should take a picture of this tree out front
21:55 Tom_itx it took a direct hit the other night
21:55 theBear yeah, well that was probly 300-350vdc, it's close to painful
21:55 Tom_itx it moved the earth around the tree
21:55 theBear nice, i bet that was more than 800
21:56 ShH pats Tom
21:56 Tom_itx lightening strike
21:56 Tom_itx didn't split it but it shot bark off all around it
21:57 Tom_itx there was no counting seconds between the visual and audio of that one
22:00 Tom_itx GuShH, i still have a drill from HF that i got to use about 1/2 a time
22:00 Tom_itx the angle head stripped out the first time i tried to use it
23:24 GuShH Tom_itx: why didn't you return it?
23:25 GuShH brb
