00:10 rue_house I need a 20-27 pin thread on cable connector
00:10 rue_house AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
00:11 rue_house for less than $1500000
00:11 theBear hmm, i got a big fancy nonmil one in the ohter room, lemme check the brand
00:11 rue_house ?
00:11 rue_house 14 pins?
00:12 theBear cannon, nah, i think 28pin
00:12 theBear big heavy duty thing, not threaded, more of a giant bnc style
00:13 rue_house its for a welder foot pedal
00:13 theBear they should come in a few pincounts, big fat pins, probly 2.5-3mm^2
00:15 rue_house http://www.ebay.ca/itm/14-Pin-Male-Plug-136961-141162-Miller-Metal-/111038108875
00:15 rue_house aha
00:15 rue_house thats almost looking like a reasonable price
00:15 theBear ooh, that looks like a copy of my one
00:15 theBear like REALLY similar
00:16 theBear as in the right pincount would mate with mine
00:23 rue_house hmm
00:23 rue_house accept your isn't thread on
00:23 rue_house is it cannon?
00:34 GuShh_ rue_house: what?
00:35 Shh_ interpreted that as "except yours isn't thread
00:35 Shh_ 's processors are working in overdrive trying to figure out what most people are trying to say la
00:36 Shh_ ...there's an entire core dedicated to robotustra a
00:38 MrCurious JANE SAYS! I'm gonna kick tomorrow!
00:40 MrCurious i totally stepped into a big pile of the 80's
00:40 MrCurious thats going to be hard to get off
00:40 GuShh_ No, you stepped onto one of larry king's balls.
00:40 GuShh_ which has been lagging behind him since the 80s.
00:41 GuShh_ It of course had it's own late night show as well, UNTIL YOU STEPPED ON IT.
00:43 MrCurious i refuse to enter into a discussion of larry kings balls... please spin the week one more time
01:26 rue_house http://www.ebay.ca/itm/171049833744
01:26 rue_house it turns out there are 3 hiden buttons in the back, they set the operation between different types of freq counters, rpm meters, and event counters
01:26 rue_house long story short, I got it to do RPM for me
01:42 rue_bed rpm/2 but using that helps with the update rate
02:02 GuShh_ rue_bed : for what?
02:15 Jak_o_Shadows Got a bench grinder today
02:36 R0b0t1 http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/adapteva/parallella-a-supercomputer-for-everyone
02:46 GuShh_ Jak_o_Shadows: yey, but why did you need one?
02:47 theBear more useful than a parallel supercomputer :)
02:48 Jak_o_Shadows Well, it wa free.
02:48 Jak_o_Shadows also, can sharpen stuff.
02:48 GuShh_ depends
02:48 GuShh_ it can mostly burn stuff, if you don't know what you're doing :p
02:49 GuShh_ plus the wheels need dressing (or replacement) I bet ya.
02:49 GuShh_ NOTHING IS EVER FREE
02:49 Jak_o_Shadows I dunno, they look sorta ok. Also, if it's too much work, i'll just bin it
02:49 GuShh_ nah it just requires a dresser and 2 minutes per wheel
02:54 Jak_o_Shadows How hard can grinding stuff be?
02:54 theBear depends how hard the stuff is :)
02:54 GuShh_ as hard as spitting to the moon
02:55 GuShh_ specially without a proper jig or base on the grinder, those flimsy little stamped pieces of shit they put on the ends of the covers are useless
02:55 GuShh_ hopefully it's an older unit with cast iron rests?
02:56 Jak_o_Shadows rests as in the thing the tool rests on?
02:56 GuShh_ yeah one for each wheel
02:56 Jak_o_Shadows Also, it's at least 20 years old, a ryobi
02:56 Jak_o_Shadows photo/looking time
02:56 GuShh_ ryobi was making things 20 years ago, or just buying china like they do these days
02:57 GuShh_ mine is a generic chinese one, can't complain for the price. had to re-align the wheels though
03:01 Jak_o_Shadows https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/104809629/benchgrinder.jpg is the RHS disc. The other rest isn't as solid, but it is flat
03:02 GuShh_ rust alert everybody!
03:02 Jak_o_Shadows well, duh.
03:02 GuShh_ needs some paint and it'll be a good one, assuming the bushings are not bad
03:02 GuShh_ but that wheel needs dressing!
03:03 GuShh_ I'd rather have an old refurbished grinder than a new grinder.
03:04 Jak_o_Shadows Yeah, rotates easy enough. Got a decent motor, only one of bunnings has a higher wattage.
03:04 GuShh_ power is not everything specially if sharpening
03:05 GuShh_ Jak_o_Shadows: it's very easy to overheat steel and ruin the temper for instance
03:07 GuShh_ the wheels should spin for a long time if you give them a quick flick with your hand, if they don't... bushings are bad or there's a midget trapped inside.
03:07 GuShh_ :p
03:08 Jak_o_Shadows The shields are loose, they keep dropping down, but I think it's fine.
03:08 theBear loose shields are signs of deeper problems
03:08 theBear like loose screws :)
03:09 GuShh_ and loose screws are a sign of a lacking sanity?
03:09 theBear heh, that's what they tell me
03:10 Faek Well they would know
03:10 theBear i'm not sure i trust them
03:10 GuShh_ faek you!
03:10 theBear or that guy.... you know, the man
03:11 GuShh_ the one with the pink glasses?
03:11 Faek GuShh_ me!
03:11 theBear GuShh_, nah, he's the rocket man
03:11 theBear but good try
03:12 GuShh_ either I'm stupid, or he's retarded http://www.backyardworkshop.com/blog-posts/metalworking/109-quick-change-tool-post.html
03:13 GuShh_ how is that a quick change toolpost? there's no cam, no piston, no dove-tails and no... tool holders...
03:13 GuShh_ HE JUST MADE A ONE TOOL TOOLPOST AND IN ALUMINUM
03:13 Shh_ twit
03:14 GuShh_ Am I missing something?
03:14 theBear your pants !
03:14 GuShh_ kinda, but aside from that
03:14 Faek Your dignity?
03:14 theBear heh
03:14 GuShh_ that was long gone when I met yo momma
03:14 GuShh_ this doesn't make sense, that's not a QCTP
03:15 Shh_ pictures a BiPolar
03:16 theBear i prefer the term manic depressive
03:16 GuShh_ What's worse, he took apart the original 4 post toolpost to make a 1 post toolpost, that isn't even quick change.
03:18 GuShh_ Even more annoying, that expensive mill they sent me the quote for, does not come with accesories nor the stand... madness!
03:19 GuShh_ (the picture in their brochure does show the stand...)
03:20 theBear and the fineprint says the pictures are only representative and may not be the actual product :)
03:20 theBear c'mon maaaaan, get yo head in the game
03:20 GuShh_ no fine print actually
03:20 GuShh_ just a silly word file
03:20 theBear that's not a brochure
03:21 GuShh_ but I dared ask, and it's not included...
03:21 GuShh_ theBear: it is when you print it
03:21 GuShh_ they didn't even hire a professional company to do them
03:21 theBear lol, nah man, brochures are on that flippy floppy paper
03:21 GuShh_ at least they should've sent me a pdf
03:21 GuShh_ well, the flippy floppy paper starts as a single sheet of paper, that gets magically folded!
03:21 theBear that's a good trick
03:24 GuShh_ if you say so!
03:24 theBear i like magic
03:27 Faek We all like magic
03:27 GuShh_ ...shrooms
03:58 GuShH http://www.shopfloortalk.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=79059&d=1310332955
03:58 GuShH so things still come in wooden boxes! even though they're not very well made...
04:07 ShH wonders if Jak_o_Shadows is idly grinding random stuff
04:08 Jak_o_Shadows nah, not installing it today
04:08 Jak_o_Shadows Probably tommorow.
04:08 GuShH well that's no fun
04:08 Jak_o_Shadows It is annoying, the shed doesn't have power, so I run an extension cord down there
04:08 GuShH hey I don't have power outside of the garage either
04:08 GuShH I do the same thing
04:08 GuShH ...until I can get my ass to install an outlet outside.
04:09 GuShH it's a bit more complicated than it sounds, need to run a new breaker from the panel, route the wires through a couple walls (steel conduit) and then pop them out, dig the trench for the plastic conduit... pop up, install the outlet...
04:09 GuShH ITS NOT THAT SIMPEL
04:10 GuShH oh and all right next to the main gas pipe.
04:10 GuShH (I don't know exactly where it is, but I can see where it comes from)
04:10 GuShH That's like a two day project, assuming I had all the things at hand.
04:12 Jak_o_Shadows I have a powerboard cable tied to a shelving unit
04:12 Jak_o_Shadows I could easily do the cabling, but i'm not sure waht code says about electricity in a tinshed
04:13 GuShH US?
04:13 GuShH depends on the state too
04:13 Jak_o_Shadows AU
04:13 GuShH probably as pedantic
04:13 GuShH but not as silly
04:13 GuShH in my case, it goes how I say it goes.
04:13 ShH wears his sunglasses at n
04:13 ShH bumps into a
04:14 theBear not so cool now eh
04:14 GuShH there's a code, nobody follows it. I do one better and I follow other countries codes.
04:14 GuShH theBear: still cool, we friends with the wall.
04:14 GuShH that's how we say hi
04:15 GuShH just about the only thing they follow is the color coding
04:15 GuShH and I've seen lots of reverse neutrals (live as neutral) ... so not even that.
04:17 GuShH "oh so brown is not neutral?" <dumb_face/> also lots of either way too high rated breakers, or way too thin wiring. a combination of both is not uncommon.
04:17 GuShH otoh a single phase can be either brown (standard) red or even black here... whatever the electrician fancies.
04:33 Jak_o_Shadows Thankfully we normally get decently standard wiring. Which means I have a lot of blue and brown wiring, as well as a little bit of yellow/green.
04:38 GuShH Jak_o_Shadows: lol " a little bit "
04:38 Jak_o_Shadows Yeah, some stuff just doesn't include the earth wire
04:38 GuShH there's no earth per-se in this house, they had an isolated earth for the heating system but it was clipped off for unknown reasons.
04:38 GuShH that's in the to-do list
04:39 GuShH costs a lot though.
04:39 GuShH the wiring is pretty darn good though and all copper of course
04:40 GuShH they had attempted to run earth by using the radiator pipes...
04:40 GuShH that's the kind of shit electricians do around here
04:47 SKiTZO I am sourcing linear actuators online, and I have the choice of 1k, 5k and 10k ohm potentiomenters for position feedback. Being a bit new to electronics, I would like to know how this matters for the sensor
04:48 SKiTZO is there a difference in reliability?
04:48 GuShH no
04:48 SKiTZO or is it just convenience?
04:48 GuShH indeed
04:48 Jak_o_Shadows Perhaps convenience, have you figured out how to read the pots?
04:48 GuShH 1 or 10k makes life easier if you have the option.
04:49 GuShH voltage divider is the obvious, simple way.
04:49 GuShH + adc
04:49 GuShH Jak_o_Shadows: do you have regular inspections for your wiring at all?
04:50 GuShH run a burried conduit when you get a chance, nobody has to know.
04:50 Jak_o_Shadows No, we don't. Possibly when selling, but in that case I could just take it down.
04:52 SKiTZO GuShH: I have a roboard-110 wit a bunch of different io ports. I was hoping to use one of them at first, but later on I am taking on making my own little controller based on some atmel something
04:54 GuShH the hell is a roboard...
04:55 SKiTZO neat little thing
04:55 SKiTZO http://www.roboard.com/RB-110.htm
04:55 GuShH SKiTZO: I'm sure it's a dumbed out mcu dev tupperware board.... in which case it should already have ADCs
04:55 GuShH brb cat is being annoying
04:55 SKiTZO it has 8 ch a/d
04:57 Jak_o_Shadows On the surface, that sems much more useful than a Rpi for a robot
04:57 GuShH yeah not bad
04:57 GuShH possibly way too expensive
04:57 GuShH and eek windows
04:58 Jak_o_Shadows More expensive (270ish), but a lot better for robotics.
04:58 GuShH meh
04:58 Jak_o_Shadows Also, you just connect generally the thing you're measuring, a reference, and program.
04:58 GuShH Anti-Power Protection <<< ???
05:02 Jak_o_Shadows I dunno, i learnt my ADC from GuShH's blog
05:02 Jak_o_Shadows brownout?
05:02 SKiTZO GuShH, i run debian just fine
05:02 SKiTZO it has all the libs for dos/linux
05:02 GuShH SKiTZO: first impressions, it's marketed for windoze
05:03 SKiTZO and they come with source
05:03 GuShH it's just an x86 of course.
05:03 SKiTZO yes. It surpasses my needs by far
05:03 GuShH So, see how the AD-7918 is used and just create a voltage divider with the pot
05:04 SKiTZO ok :)
05:04 SKiTZO thanks for the input
05:05 GuShH And I mean how it's used on that particular board, not in general as that won't be of much use, although reading the datasheet will help understand a few things
05:06 GuShH Jak_o_Shadows: you mean to say my blog was of any use to someone? that's new.
05:10 Jak_o_Shadows haha, yeah, the LED as photodiode was useful. Will probably go back and use that again at some point
06:29 Shh_ ponders getting a small plasma cutter to chop up the safe (the perfect excuse to buy o
06:30 Faek Any excuse would do really
06:30 SKiTZO GuShh_, the roboard has a dead simple API in C. I guess there is a function int val=getADC(0x3); or similar
06:30 GuShh_ Faek: which one do you have?
06:31 GuShh_ SKiTZO: most likely
06:31 Faek I ddo not have a plasma cutter
06:31 GuShh_ SKiTZO: so the idea is to setup the pot (how many wires do they expose, 2 or 3?) so you can get a voltage from X to Y based on feedback
06:31 GuShh_ usually 0v-VREF works.
06:32 GuShh_ (as you'd want to use those 10bits available)
06:32 GuShh_ Faek: oh... thought you had one
06:32 GuShh_ well, the cheapie 40AMP ones are not terribly expensive
06:32 Faek Nah i just know the feeling
06:32 GuShh_ cuts up to 10mm cleanly, but I hear 16mm rough
06:32 Jak_o_Shadows I did some oxy-acetylene cutting the other week, was lousy at it
06:33 GuShh_ I have mixed feelings about that safe heh, on one hand I want to chop it up so I can have space for my tools... but at the same time I feel bad doing so
06:33 GuShh_ Jak_o_Shadows: that's a lot harder in general than a simple plasma cutter though
06:33 GuShh_ get your temperature and nozzle wrong and you'll make a mess.
06:33 GuShh_ similar variables to an extent with the plasma, amp and air pressure (plus variables on how you position the nozzle)
06:33 GuShh_ but, easier I believe.
06:34 Jak_o_Shadows I was just bad at moving at the right pace. Did some stick welding at the same time, that wasn't too bad. Mig was dead easy.
06:34 GuShh_ also, no gasses just air from a compressor
06:34 GuShh_ that's a big plus in my book
06:34 GuShh_ I can't afford inert gasses nor oxygen not anything else really
06:34 GuShh_ the tanks are expensive, they're a hassle to recharge, etc.
06:35 Jak_o_Shadows Yeah, you need to have a real need for it, but it's a heck of a lot nicer
06:35 GuShh_ Jak_o_Shadows: would love a mig-mag-tig setup.... one can only dream
06:36 GuShh_ never actually welded with TIG, but I believe all these years soldering with TIG techniques would've paid off.
06:36 GuShh_ Again, the shielding gasses are to me the most expensive part...
06:36 GuShh_ As for mig, the actual rolls are also expensive, specially for stainless
06:37 GuShh_ in a hobby setting they would last me a life time, but that's still a lot of money.
06:37 GuShh_ also it's nice to use someone else's tools when you don't have to maintain them heh
06:37 GuShh_ it's like using someone else's car
06:37 Jak_o_Shadows Yeah, i'd never get a helmet with the flip down lens.
06:38 Jak_o_Shadows May cost more, but the auto-darkening ones make it so much easier
06:38 GuShh_ that's all I have, I've been saving for an auto-darkening one
06:38 GuShh_ bought 4 different DIN shades, it's still very annoying and useless in general...
06:39 GuShh_ and it's actually the reason why I make so many mistakes when I'm welding
06:39 GuShh_ it's not an excuse, just a reality. Maybe my hand-eye coordination sucks in this case, or maybe it's just plain stupid and should be banned.
06:40 GuShh_ but I setup, flick my head to lower the helmet and when I strike the arc, I'm way off line.
06:40 Jak_o_Shadows They are silly. What type of welder do you have stick?
06:40 GuShh_ or since I can't measure the actual distance, I get a false start.
06:40 GuShh_ (on a cold electrode)
06:40 GuShh_ not cool.
06:40 GuShh_ as in, not fun heh
06:40 GuShh_ Jak_o_Shadows: just a medium sized stick welder.
06:40 GuShh_ does 100% duty on 90-100A which is all I needed
06:41 Jak_o_Shadows With the stick welder, with silly helmet, I was just starting off on a bit of scrap, then going high over to the weld area and lowering it and starting to weld.
06:41 Jak_o_Shadows Make a right mess.
06:41 GuShh_ I can't remember the top end amperage, but the duty is very low at that setting
06:41 GuShh_ Jak_o_Shadows: yeah that's more or less what happens when you weld BLIND
06:42 GuShh_ then again the cheapest auto darkening helmet is about 100 usd here, which is a chunk of money for "just a welding helmet" (you can get a small arc welder for that cash)
06:42 Jak_o_Shadows Yeah, that's about the same here.
06:43 GuShh_ I think if only you weld once a year and just to put two things together, without caring how it looks... an old style helmet works just fine
06:43 Jak_o_Shadows I'd probably skip buying a welder and just rent it.
06:43 GuShh_ And, that's actually how it all began, I needed to fix a few things and that was it.
06:43 GuShh_ I've seen on eBay small auto-darkening shades that you can put on a regular helmet
06:43 GuShh_ for 20 bucks including shipping
06:44 GuShh_ but the visible area is tiny, has very primitive sensing, etc...
06:44 GuShh_ and no settings at all
06:44 Jak_o_Shadows How the heck are you meant to test it though?
06:44 GuShh_ what do you mean?
06:44 GuShh_ it's DIN10 and you can't adjust
06:44 GuShh_ or 11
06:44 GuShh_ let me see...
06:44 Jak_o_Shadows well, how do you make sure the cheap auto-darkening ones actually work?
06:45 GuShh_ oh, at the home improvement store you can actually fool around with them
06:45 GuShh_ if there's sunlight, they will turn on
06:45 Jak_o_Shadows 'spose
06:45 GuShh_ they all work, but the cheapest ones have less sensors, less settings
06:46 GuShh_ say you're welding in a tight space and your only two sensors are covered up by a steel beam, when you strike the arc the helmet won't darken
06:46 GuShh_ so "professional" helmets have 4-6 sensors throughout.
06:46 Jak_o_Shadows You can get gassless migs. Wonder what they're like.
06:46 GuShh_ with flux core wire
06:46 GuShh_ it's meh.
06:46 Jak_o_Shadows Ha.
06:47 GuShh_ and stainless steel is not an option, the rolls are very expensive and most are "dual shield" which means you actually do need some shielding gas in there
06:47 GuShh_ and the ones that are not, produce pitted welds
06:47 GuShh_ also for me, I can't actually source those rolls. it's hard enough to find aluminum ones at the right size and gauge, let alone "flux core stainless"
06:48 GuShh_ for steel, they are a lot nicer than a stick welder though
06:48 GuShh_ similar results, but no hassles
06:49 Jak_o_Shadows Next time I need something metal joined, i'll definitely consider welding instead of bolting.
06:49 GuShh_ http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360667157415
06:49 GuShh_ that's the gimmick I was talking about
06:49 GuShh_ nice idea, but... you can barely see with the small window on those helmets, imagine seeing through almost half of that.
06:50 Jak_o_Shadows ha, yeah.
06:50 GuShh_ and it's also fixed setting, so not very useful.
06:51 GuShh_ ...plus DIN11 if you're welding with 2mm electrodes, you can barely see the puddle, and on the other hand if you are dealing with 3.5mm electrodes or even 4mm, you'll get blinded.
06:51 RifRaf Jak_o_Shadows, printed some gripper parts before, they are sweet, put them together with 3mm filament rivets instead on screws
06:52 RifRaf can post you a set if you want to try
06:52 Jak_o_Shadows pics?
06:52 GuShh_ filament rivets are pop rivets?
06:52 RifRaf i tryed, will have to try again though, had no sd card in :/
06:52 GuShh_ I'ma have a pop-rivet-fest soon...
06:53 RifRaf GuShh_, i melt one end with low temp iron, and instert and melt other end then press, works nicely
06:53 RifRaf been trying a few methods and this works
06:53 GuShh_ 160 rivets for the lathe stand sheet metal
06:53 GuShh_ with a handheld pop riveting tool.
06:54 Jak_o_Shadows fun
06:54 GuShh_ Most I've done in the past were 20 and my hands were complaining.
06:54 GuShh_ and they were tiny rivets.
06:54 RifRaf we have air riveting guns at work :)
06:54 GuShh_ yeah well this is not at your work this is at my small garage sir.
06:54 RifRaf makes it easy cause some days we do hundreds
06:54 GuShh_ I'd love one
06:54 GuShh_ but the cheap ones are trash.
06:54 GuShh_ and I can't afford the good ones.
06:54 GuShh_ I basically have no real air tools other than a basic set, sad...
06:55 RifRaf yep is nice to work were there is air all around the place, i have a big compressor just for the router
06:56 RifRaf and to keep it clean and clean shit away after cutting
06:56 GuShh_ I have a 50L compressor and I'm thankful I have it, won't complain about how small or loud it is. No I won't.
06:56 GuShh_ Here's the thing, the 100L one had the same compressor unit, just a bigger tank, costs twice as much... No thanks, I'll add an aux tank later on and it won't cost as much.
06:57 RifRaf everything is loud at work, so i have earmuffs on all day pretty much :( still going deaf probly
06:57 GuShh_ Right at 150-300L they start to use two cylinders.... these crazy chinese.
06:57 GuShh_ I use earmuffs anyway all the time, from chainsaw to angle grinder.
06:58 GuShh_ Safety is an important aspect, eyes included.
06:58 Shh_ even wears a gayish orange helmet when he's pruning with the chainsaw
06:58 RifRaf same, got glasses everywhere now
06:59 GuShh_ had a close call with a propane torch once, wasn't wearing eye protection...
06:59 RifRaf i won't go near the machine without em, but em sure if the spindle let loose i would have a 4 inch hole through me head anyway
06:59 GuShh_ heating up some tubing on the basement floor, it was some sort of concrete mix, unsure... but it just blew up (air pocket they told me)
06:59 GuShh_ went off like a 22, hit me in the face...
06:59 GuShh_ but, no scars or anything, was lucky.
07:00 RifRaf so glasses won't do much, but i get hit in the eyes with metal chips all the time, they save them hitting eyeballs
07:00 GuShh_ it just hurt like hell.
07:00 RifRaf i better go find a card for this camera
07:00 GuShh_ I don't have a full face mask, the ones I've seen would not do much against these impacts... they're mostly for gardners
07:00 GuShh_ heh that's smaller than I thought http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGHFSwgJhhk
07:01 GuShh_ obviously inverter
07:01 GuShh_ from another video I can see it takes a lot of time to close off the air once you're done cutting, wonder if that could be solved...
07:01 GuShh_ maybe it's a capacitor discharge "timer" for the solenoid
07:02 GuShh_ same crap, just rebranded http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIDLA-CQxmw
07:06 RifRaf http://imagebin.org/265475
07:08 RifRaf thats was first test, will adjust things a little, thicknesses and stuff, and happy with the strength compared to acrylic
07:09 Jak_o_Shadows cool
07:09 GuShh_ so a cheap tig is actually less expensive than the plasma cutter, but they don't even have the option to reverse polarity...
07:09 GuShh_ just a "tig / stick" switch that takes the HF start off
07:09 GuShh_ 10-230A range...
07:10 m_itx pictures GuShh_ with orange helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, chaps and a hand tree
07:10 GuShh_ LOL
07:10 GuShh_ Those tiny things that aren't even 26cc?
07:10 GuShh_ Why do they cost as much as a 38cc regular chainsaw?
07:10 Tom_itx GuShh_ powered
07:10 GuShh_ Uh... No, I have a 38cc and a 52cc
07:11 Tom_itx i've got 2 stils and a mac
07:11 GuShh_ Haven't had a need for more power (want it, can't justify it)
07:11 GuShh_ I only wear helmet, eye and ear protection. Helmet not always, only if branches can fall.
07:11 Tom_itx mac has a 28" bar
07:11 GuShh_ Chaps could help... but I don't have any.
07:12 GuShh_ Plus that's a bit too much gear, I like to go out and cut. Not produce myself like a woman.
07:12 GuShh_ The ear-eye protection combo is used for everything, so I always have it handy
07:12 GuShh_ Tom_itx: bar size comparison is for noobs.
07:12 Tom_itx i'm not sure the cc of it
07:12 Tom_itx it's pretty old
07:13 Tom_itx but powerful
07:13 GuShh_ 100ish for that bar
07:13 Jak_o_Shadows I have an electric chainsaw. I confiscated it from someone who was unable to use it safely.
07:13 Tom_itx was $50
07:13 GuShh_ I have a 22 inch on the 52 and that's pushing it
07:13 GuShh_ a 18 would be ideal
07:13 GuShh_ Jak_o_Shadows: lol
07:13 GuShh_ I don't see the point in electric chainsaws for what I use them.
07:13 Tom_itx i like the 10" stihl
07:14 Jak_o_Shadows Wish they'd gotten a petrol one.
07:14 Tom_itx good for up in the tree
07:14 GuShh_ top handle?
07:14 Tom_itx yes
07:14 GuShh_ awesome
07:14 Tom_itx very balanced
07:14 Jak_o_Shadows On the internet: Just don't weld when its raining
07:14 GuShh_ yeah, I'd like one. but it's like everything else, how to justify it for a one-off
07:14 GuShh_ Jak_o_Shadows: oh?
07:14 GuShh_ why not :>
07:15 Tom_itx i usually try to get my toys to pay for themselves before i play with em
07:15 GuShh_ I welded under the rain a couple weeks ago, I'm still here?
07:15 GuShh_ Oh, ok. Well, that's the thing. If I had to pay someone to prune even one tree, I could buy the chainsaw.
07:15 GuShh_ And I'm not exaggerating.
07:15 Tom_itx yes i know
07:16 Tom_itx that's why i have the tools
07:16 GuShh_ I know it's a lot of work sometimes, and you have consumables and other expenses... but they charge a lot.
07:16 Tom_itx got a powered saw sharpener as well
07:17 GuShh_ fancy
07:17 GuShh_ I'm still using hand files, free hand actually
07:17 Tom_itx and probably 4-6 chains for each saw
07:17 GuShh_ But all those years of RC airplane making have paid off.
07:17 Tom_itx that way i can go a whole day or two without worrying about sharpening
07:17 GuShh_ Tell me the angle and I'll do it freehand.
07:17 GuShh_ That's twice what I keep!
07:18 GuShh_ These are also just regular oregons
07:18 GuShh_ one is the girly type, anti-kickback bullcrap, they're useless
07:18 GuShh_ used it once, never again
07:18 Tom_itx i grind my own kickback
07:18 GuShh_ I should file down those guides it has...
07:18 Tom_itx off :)
07:19 GuShh_ I've had small kickback, but if your stance is good and you know how to grip the chainsaw, it's not a problem.
07:19 Shh_ still pictures himself on a pool of blood before using any chainsaw, helps with resp
07:20 GuShh_ If you keep off booze, don't work tired and use common sense plus basic safety equipment and measures... it should all be good.
07:20 GuShh_ I'm sure now next time I fire one of them up I'll end up in the hospital for saying that
07:24 GuShh_ hmm 200 bucks for the small co2 can.. prices went up because they're used by beer enthusiasts heh
07:56 rue_bed few fridge compressors and make your own plant?
07:57 theBear plants are made of plant stuff, not fridge parts... i've seen them, there's some outside
07:58 theBear i have distant memories of something about i dunno, nuclei with something different to animals
07:58 theBear bigger than atoms and molecules
07:58 theBear something missing
08:00 theBear i didn't know there was any way to sharpen a chainsaw other than a straight round file
08:00 eBear slaps himself about a
08:01 GuShh_ rue_bed: huh?
08:01 theBear orright, businesstime
08:01 GuShh_ theBear: heh yeah, with jigs... and with special grinders
08:01 theBear meh, that aint for me
08:01 GuShh_ If you have more than 3 chains and use a chainsaw at least once every two days (or are very lazy) one is a good investment
08:01 GuShh_ theBear: I just use a file, tell me the angle and I'll eyeball it
08:02 theBear meh, i never chainsawed for money, but it doesn't take long to do by hand
08:02 GuShh_ Sometimes I over file the rakers, so it makes for a nice angry chain. But that's the only issue I've had
08:02 theBear well fulltime for money
08:02 GuShh_ as for sharpening, don't need a jig yet
08:02 GuShh_ I don't chainsaw for money either
08:02 GuShh_ I'd like to, since I'd get paid to chop shit up and make loud noises
08:02 GuShh_ but meh
08:02 theBear if you do it for money you can justify bulletproof chaps too :)
08:03 GuShh_ lol
08:03 GuShh_ hot pink ones!
08:03 theBear seriously, tho i don't think you buy them for the bulletproof property
08:03 GuShh_ oh?
08:03 GuShh_ I don't think you can buy those here
08:03 GuShh_ I haven't even seen the leather ones
08:03 theBear they're also chainsaw proof...
08:03 GuShh_ I'm sure they are sold somewhere
08:03 GuShh_ oh those
08:03 GuShh_ those are meant to tangle up the chain
08:04 theBear apparently
08:04 GuShh_ they even make pants like that
08:04 GuShh_ must be like wearing snowboarding pants, but for work.
08:04 GuShh_ unless you work doing snowboard, then I guess that analogy sucks.
08:04 theBear i wouldn't knw about that... i always wanted to try snowboarding, might never get a chance now :(
08:04 GuShh_ you could try snow-ass-boarding though
08:05 theBear my ass is worse than my legs !
08:05 GuShh_ some hip movement but you are mostly stiff on the board
08:05 GuShh_ bending the knees
08:05 GuShh_ I guess if you hit one rock you could either fix your back problem, or die right there.
08:06 theBear maybe it's like opium, the more you experience the more you notice the effects, but benzos REALLY put me in a bad mood
08:06 GuShh_ I'm sure you like the odds
08:06 theBear i'm cursed, i wouldn't die, i'd just get more injured
08:06 GuShh_ Heidi Klum odds.
08:06 theBear i honestly won't be surprised if i'm still hobbling around in a few hundred years
08:06 GuShh_ YA AITHER EEIN ER YEER AAAUT
08:06 GuShh_ Is she single now?
08:07 GuShh_ no more crater-face seal
08:07 theBear hmm, i dunno much about heidi klum except her name reminds me of a girl in school
08:07 GuShh_ thank god. what did she see on that guy
08:07 GuShh_ plus he can only sing the one song
08:07 GuShh_ I'd even punch him for that alone.
08:07 theBear can't remember if it was her or her cousin, one of them went diving and some thing in their brain exploded and killed them instantly... sorta thing that was always there but needed a serious scan or diving to discover
08:07 GuShh_ would force him to rename it to "kissed by a knuckle or two, or three".
08:07 theBear but that was a long time ago
08:07 theBear sidenote, her cousin was in my classes too
08:08 GuShh_ pfft
08:08 theBear heh, at least a liverpool kiss involves two heads.. some circles they call it a glasgow kiss
08:08 GuShh_ every man has a heidi klum photo gallery in his head.
08:09 theBear seriously, it's like a few weeks ago someone linked this "which one would you do" picture of i dunno a j-law? and someother 'famous' person, i honestly didn't recognise either of them, letalone know what they were 'famous' for
08:09 theBear i've really gotten good at avoiding the media and real world after half a lifetime actively trying
08:09 theBear grr 10 minutes my ass ! where's my customer
08:09 GuShh_ https://www.google.com/search?q=heidi+klum&rlz=1C1LENP_enAR520AR520&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=ZM7vUZO2I6GkigKArYGYDQ&biw=1440&bih=799&sei=u87vUe_7M-mciALquoBI
08:10 GuShh_ I'm glad she left that one-trick turd.
08:10 theBear i'm pretty sure i never seen that head before
08:10 GuShh_ damn you
08:10 theBear oh wait, jackie moon ! she musta been inthat movie
08:10 GuShh_ she's german and shes hot.
08:10 theBear i think that's jackie moon
08:10 GuShh_ GET TO DA CHOPPAH but with boobs.
08:10 GuShh_ wait, arnie is not german
08:10 GuShh_ BUT HE SOUNDS GERMAN
08:10 GuShh_ this is one big mess.
08:10 theBear http://siswimdaily.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/heidi-klum2.jpg?w=600&h=683
08:11 GuShh_ Wait, maybe he actually is. Austria after all...
08:11 theBear yeah i know her, she was his wife in that movie
08:11 GuShh_ You know, nazi enough.
08:11 GuShh_ HAWT
08:11 theBear austrian ? in that case "giday mate, chuck a coupla shimps on the baaarbie"
08:11 GuShh_ Lol you only know her because of this goof ball :p
08:11 theBear yeah, i don't hate him as much as most people, but he is more or less a one note pony
08:12 GuShh_ Seal?
08:12 theBear heh, i seen a sealskin jacket in a cartoon i like :)
08:12 theBear his face was all stretched across the back :)
08:12 GuShh_ http://cdn.sheknows.com/articles/2012/09/heidi-klum-seal-divorce-1.jpg
08:12 theBear so i know who he is
08:12 GuShh_ He must have a big ding dong motha fucka.
08:12 theBear and shoog-nite was in reno 911 movie, or at least references to him
08:13 theBear heh i bet he got nothin on me
08:13 GuShh_ otherwise, how come she would even care about a turd like that
08:13 theBear i dunno, that first link suggests she's kinda, err, shallow
08:13 GuShh_ Not because he's black, but because of all the dimples and overall crap in his face.
08:13 GuShh_ Maybe a skin condition?
08:13 GuShh_ Also I've seen white turds.
08:14 theBear yeah, he ain't pretty, but a lot of VERY black skin people (not just african descent) seem to be a bit like that
08:14 Shh_ g
08:14 GuShh_ skin issues?
08:14 theBear oh, wordplay, umm, whastup daaawg
08:14 GuShh_ Don't know, some look silky smooth
08:14 GuShh_ Oh now I have to watch the movie....
08:14 theBear you know, dimples and freckles and "i just stuck my head in a chimney or am a burn victim" kinda stuff
08:14 GuShh_ Damn you Adam Sandler!
08:14 GuShh_ Of all the Jews I would spare you.
08:14 Shh_ bl
08:14 theBear which movie ?
08:15 GuShh_ The one where he wants to be a hair stylist
08:15 GuShh_ "I want to be silky smooth..."
08:15 theBear ahh that's one of the better ones
08:15 theBear i want to make everyone silky smoose
08:15 GuShh_ Scrappy Coco?
08:15 theBear *BAM*
08:15 GuShh_ lol
08:16 theBear you want to make, the sound ? no ! it hasn't been done for 1000s of years !
08:16 GuShh_ I wish I could do body-work on cars like he does...
08:16 theBear visitor l8r
08:40 theBear orright, the liquor and cigarette supplies are replenished, not to mention more goodwill... it's nice to feel useful
09:33 GuShh_ theBear: booze and cigs... you can't live off that!
09:34 GuShh_ bah, I thought I cut enough parts to actually start tack-welding the friggin lathe stand, but no. missing two 40cm parts and four 27cm ones...
09:35 GuShh_ not having a chop saw doesn't help at all
09:41 theBear i'm disappointed at my FOOL table top sitting in the loungeroom and being too crippled since a couple days after (got busy, defiantely not related) to just cut the 4 damned (simple straight) legs and stick them on :(
10:37 Tom_itx tech support from microsoft is calling me at my house
10:37 Tom_itx scam?
10:38 robotustra it depends on what do they want from you
10:41 Tom_itx they're telling me i have a critical system error
10:41 Tom_itx first of all how would they know unless they're invading my privacy?
10:42 robotustra yep
10:42 robotustra they have critical systematic errors in their DNAs
10:52 theBear SCAM
10:52 theBear surprised you ahven't seen it yet, tho i didn't see it outside of business numbers until recently either
10:53 theBear cracks me up... they start saying things like system properties or start menu, depending on mood i might play along a little, of course i haven't had system properties or a start menu for many many years now
11:02 robotustra :)
11:02 robotustra KDE?
11:02 robotustra GNOME?
11:02 robotustra xfce?
11:10 theBear xfce, but for many years i've had a fairly static and radically unconventional toolbar/menu/everything layout
11:12 robotustra customized?
11:17 theBear well, for example i got a autohide 'taskbar' with desktop-switcher on top on the left hand edge, quite wide when expanded, nothing on the r/h screen (2 screens), almost far right on the bottom i got a little popup that until recently was always up but either behind other windows or transparent with a fuzzy clock (morning/late morning/nearly noon style) and a few 'everyday' shortcuts like the x2x starter/restarter for the lappy usually to the left, re
11:17 theBear al clock volume and xfce menu nearly far left on bottom autohide which i almost never use these days, top has 'notification area', little 'break from pc' style repeating timer i been using recently so i don't stay still long enough to hurt my back a lot, and a bunch of common/everyday icons to start stuff like browsers and set various xrandr/screen modes etc... also i ALWAYS got at least this machine (including front/livingroom/backdoor video cams in
11:17 theBear mini size) gkrellm just left of the middle of the split between the screens, and a smaller one for the server left of that
11:17 theBear i bet i coulda worked otu how to screenshot and pasted a pic quicker than that :)
12:16 theBear https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/1012425_634520526568962_1976656709_n.jpg
12:18 theBear my god ! http://www.avr-tutorials.com/interfacing/interfacing-leds-avr-microcontroller 3rd paragraph, comments ?
12:23 Tom_itx they were saying something about system errors in the error log
12:23 Tom_itx i wasn't here to take the call
12:32 theBear yeah, that's one of the standard lines
12:45 Gargantuasauce the datasheet says 40mA per pin
12:45 Gargantuasauce it also says max 200mA through the supply
12:45 Tom_itx theBear, the event log is full of errors though
12:46 theBear and you honestly think they didn't just guess that ? c'mon man, you never looked at an event log before ?
12:46 Tom_itx not really
12:47 Tom_itx source is WMI and MSSQL$SOSHOME309
12:48 theBear fairy nuff :)
12:48 Tom_itx i don't go diggin unless i gotta
12:48 theBear wmi errors are common/'normal' ... soshome is unfamiliar, almost sounds suspect
12:48 Tom_itx they bury shit too deep
12:49 Tom_itx well at first i thought it may be a fraudulent call
12:49 Gargantuasauce it definitely is
12:49 Tom_itx but i'm about to call them back to see if MS answers the phone
12:49 theBear me neither, plus i hated windows for quite some years now, but unfortunately i still give in occasionally and fix it for a friend :) technically back in the days nt4 was a current enterprise level os i was qualified, but don't tell anyone, i'm kinda ashamed :) it's only cos i thought that's what employers wanted to hear tho
12:49 Tom_itx and ask them WTF they are watching me
12:50 Gargantuasauce they just direct you to go to some remote desktop service and then they give you some nice software
12:50 Tom_itx i'm not using these particular PCs
12:50 Tom_itx i gotta find an indian translator first though
12:50 theBear well that's another way to put it "do you REALLY believe ms cares even a TINY bit about you, outside of genuine validation red flags on their update systems ?"
12:50 Gargantuasauce what makes you think whatever they put on the pc will stay on that one pc?
12:50 theBear heh, yeah, i heard ms new head technical office is in india somewhere <grin>
12:51 Gargantuasauce (pretty sure they don't care about validation failures either)
12:51 Gargantuasauce past the point of releasing one windows update that counters chew-wga's actions
12:52 theBear i'm very sure they don't, but if they WERE gonna care about tom, it wouldn't be cos they remote-sensed he had some wmi and db errors in his logs <grin>
12:52 Gargantuasauce it's just some fuck who wants your credit card and passwords
12:52 Tom_itx they didn't want me to clear the logs either
12:57 theBear sidenote: those logs can get quite massively out of control and space consuming over the years just thru normal use if you aren't aware of them, between memory and fragmentation and general disk wastage, it's certainly not stupid to clear them out, or at least up to some recent point intime if you're worried you might need them to fix something
12:57 Gargantuasauce they have a size limit that is reasonably small by default
12:58 Gargantuasauce youre talking out your ass again
12:58 Tom_itx theBear, yeah i'm just gonna clear em
12:58 Tom_itx one was corrupt anyway
12:58 theBear i haven't used windows since 2000 was newish, and whaddyou mean again ?
12:58 Gargantuasauce :)
12:59 eBear asks himself if he really cares what this dude thinks, but since he has a free moment sees what hap
12:59 Gargantuasauce you should not care what i think
12:59 Gargantuasauce but what i think is that this is a periodic occurrence
13:00 theBear i don't, i just worry that someone i do respect might be a bit sleepy and believe you without think
13:00 theBear ing
13:00 Gargantuasauce perhaps i worry the same thing?
13:00 theBear i haven't insulted you yet, tempting as it is, i don't have a reason, and today i can't remember anything about you or most things due to heavy duty painkillers
13:00 Tom_itx i've never bothered looking at the event logs
13:01 Gargantuasauce you are welcome to assume i am another random freenode moron
13:01 Gargantuasauce because i am
13:01 Gargantuasauce anyway it's 3 am and thus probably sleepytiem for this guy
13:02 Gargantuasauce seriously don't give that call a second thought, it's just someone who wants to install invasive software on your machine
13:02 theBear heh, assuming something and telling everyone what you assume as if you had a good reason are very different things, you may not have noticed, but i kinda try NOT to just make things up
13:07 Tom_itx i assumed so
13:07 Tom_itx :)
13:07 theBear :) aww, you always know how to cheer me up
13:09 Tom_itx ok, 3 lappys all cleared out
13:10 theBear hooray
13:10 theBear personally i'm working on a few hundred tabs of various images, things i need to note and things i need to bookmark and have been lazy about recently :)
13:10 Tom_itx http://www.electronicproducts.com/Computer_Systems/Standalone_Mobile/iPhone_5_creates_deadly_electric_shock.aspx
13:11 theBear mmm, old news in the electronics channel, and misleading title
13:11 m_itx tries agai
13:11 Tom_itx http://www.electronicproducts.com/Electromechanical_Components/Motors_and_Controllers/Image_of_the_Day_NASA_successfully_tests_3D-printed_rocket_engine_injector.aspx
13:13 theBear i fixed a fairly new err, asus or acer last week or so, had a weird 3prong mains lead for the adapter/psu that the guy forgot to bring so i shaved a fig8 i had to fit in there, wasn't quite deadly, but there was enough of the old leakage that sitting on my chair in my carpeted floor room not touching anything else grounded etc, i actually got AUDIBLE bzzzt as i slid my slightly sweaty wrist lightly across the metal casing say, around the pad/under th
13:13 theBear e keyboard
13:13 Tom_itx so put a printer on board and they should be able to fix any issue that may arrise
13:13 theBear i noticed similar things since i was a kid, ie my old 2prong 70s 3in1 stereo unit, or parents touching my head/ear when i was in bed with an electric blanket (slightly audible that one) but this was surprisingly audible
13:14 theBear hmm interesting... same kinda topic tho i haven't read it myself yet, http://www.zeitnews.org/natural-sciences/nanotechnology/desktop-printing-nano-level
13:16 plotino hello guys
13:17 plotino i have so much confusione about the electrical motors classification
13:17 plotino can you helkp me?
13:17 theBear maybe, anything in particular confusing you right now ?
13:18 plotino i woudl like to know ..
13:18 plotino if a motor is classified as DC brushed motor
13:18 plotino it means that stato is made by permanent magnet ?
13:20 theBear generally that means a rotating coil within fixed magnets, the coil is powered alternately one way and the other as it spins by the nature of moving contacts and fixed 'brushes' (literally bits of metal or carbon that brush against the moving contacts on the shaft)
13:29 plotino clear ..
13:30 plotino but is it possible to have stator with excitation current to generate the static magnetic field ?
13:31 plotino ni this case two power circuit, one for stator and one for rotor .. correct?
13:33 theBear you mean to avoid permanent magnets ?
13:33 plotino yes
13:33 plotino and also .. hot to regulate speed of such motors?
13:35 theBear in theory i suppose you could, but it'd be kinda 'wasting' electrical power when you could have just used fixed magnets, and to regulate this kind of motor you just feed more/less voltage and nature does the rest
13:40 plotino u say voltage, not current?
13:41 plotino the force is not equal to B*i*L??
13:42 theBear while it's a simplification, the motor can be represented as a resistive electrical load for any given physical/torque load, more/less voltage = more/less current for a fixed resistance, cos v = r . i ALWAYS
13:42 plotino ok
13:42 plotino underfstood
13:42 theBear in reality the motor is a bit inductorey, but the concept stands
14:28 GuShh_ theBear: meh, finally began to weld the lathe stand... but I've still got parts to cut :(
14:28 GuShh_ also running low on electrodes, darn it.
14:28 GuShh_ who would've thought I'd need 2 kilograms for this
14:30 Tom_itx electrodes!?
14:30 Tom_itx wire spool
14:30 GuShh_ electrodes 2mm
14:30 GuShh_ I'll just use 2.5mm for the wide corners in the meantime
14:31 m_itx gives GuShh_ some coat hangars and a gas t
14:31 GuShh_ heh, tig would do with coat hanger
14:32 GuShh_ Used about 1KG and I didn't finish one third of the total. granted, I rewelded some beads... anyway, back to it. Finishing the top part right now.
14:33 GuShh_ You are right it's a lot of steel, but I put together two half frames and the squared top, put my arse on the middle and I could feel it flexing, so a basic "C" shape table would not have been sufficient.
15:33 GuShh_ No wonder I kept getting cold joints... the electrode lead was 90% severed at the lug
15:34 GuShh_ so based on position I would get an ok-ish contact in there, or almost no contact at all... darn it. they didn't stress relief the cable at all.
15:34 Shh_ s
16:56 GuShh_ ...the lug was soldered, that's what made the weak point, plus lack of relief.
16:58 Tom_itx lucky there was a good man around to fix it
16:58 GuShh_ no, jesus was not involved.
17:36 link_ Hi
17:37 link_ I'd like to build a robotarm which catches everything I throw at it.
17:38 link_ where could I look for components,
17:38 Tom_itx MIT made one
17:39 Tom_itx are you an experienced robot builder / programmer?
17:40 link_ no
17:40 Tom_itx you'd better make an led blink first then
17:40 link_ I'm in IT
17:40 Tom_itx stereo camera vision
17:40 Tom_itx fast processors
17:40 Tom_itx $$$ servo driven arms
17:42 GuShh_ link_: would you also like to get bored of it 10 minutes after finishing it?
17:42 Tom_itx sry, maybe it was Newton Labs
17:42 Tom_itx http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43xbi14-7QE
17:43 Tom_itx making that video probably took several thousand dollars and several hundred man hours of programming
17:44 Tom_itx but i encourage you to .. top that
17:47 Tom_itx now, if you want it to catch a ball shot out of a cannon... that's a whole different story. notice the operator gingerly tosses the ball to the arm
18:11 link_ I won't get bored
18:11 link_ I want it for my bathroom
18:11 link_ It should catch my toothpaste
18:11 link_ and toothbrush
18:11 poli Hello my good people of #robotics!
18:12 Tom_itx guess he's only addressing half of us
18:13 poli Well, I don't like to point fingers... ;)
18:14 link_ Tom_itx cool, thank you, that's exacly what i'm looking for
18:19 poli yay citeseerx is back
18:20 poli GuShh_: hey chico
18:27 poli http://www.nightrover.org/technical-competition
18:27 poli NASA is crowdsourcing heavily
18:53 robotustra linar rover :)
18:55 robotustra on the dark side of the moon
19:39 Skwint well, it could use solar power to lift large moon rocks up above the surface
19:39 Skwint then then use gravity pulling them down to power itself in the dark
19:39 Skwint if it needs mechanical energy anyway
19:57 theBear "for course information leave you massage here" on a webpage... yeah, i really wanna come to these guys for an education :)
21:26 MrCurious 8 months waiting for a leap motion pre-order
21:26 MrCurious and they are unreachable, have no account page to check status, orders, nada
21:27 Mr_Sheesh Ack. Hoping you didn't pay
21:27 MrCurious i think they will give it to me for teh pre-order price ($10 off) + shipping
21:27 MrCurious but if its in stores before i get it, and i end up paying more to wait, i will be livid
21:27 robotustra MrCurious what is this leap motion for?
21:28 Mr_Sheesh Could they have renamed or been bought out by some other company or something?
21:28 MrCurious https://www.leapmotion.com/
21:28 MrCurious let me google it for you
21:28 robotustra :)
21:28 Tom_itx gonna click my mouse for me too?
21:29 robotustra ah, not bad
21:29 MrCurious apparently it only reports coordinates of the vertices of sticks and fingers
21:29 MrCurious erm tips
21:29 MrCurious so its not a kinect
21:30 robotustra useless toy as usual
21:30 robotustra but what is the range of this device?
21:32 MrCurious want me to look on their site for you:P
22:21 poli What would be a good obstacle avoiding sensor?
22:21 Jak_o_Shadows What type of obstacle, and what environment?
22:31 poli Jak_o_Shadows: doorways and low laying objects and people
22:31 Jak_o_Shadows so inside? What sort of distance?
22:32 poli Jak_o_Shadows: I suppose <30 cm
22:33 Jak_o_Shadows You could use computer vision, ultrasonic sensors, infared/light sensors.
22:33 Jak_o_Shadows Ultrasonics are nice.
22:34 poli I need something simpler than vision, I will have a dedicated real-time processor for that.
22:34 poli Jak_o_Shadows: Do you know of a reliable ultrasensor? I have found the usual on ebay, but havne't read about reliability, response time, etc.
22:35 Jak_o_Shadows Well, you're going to need to filter any sensor input. For these, they're slightly less reliable when moving, and can occassionally just get sily results
22:35 Jak_o_Shadows Shouldn't be too bad to filter them.
22:36 poli something better than those HC-SR04 ?
22:36 Tom_itx no one sensor does it all
22:36 Tom_itx sonar, ir, 'feeler switches' etc
22:37 Jak_o_Shadows oh yeah, bump sensors
22:38 Tom_itx laser
22:38 MrCurious why oh why do i mill aluminum barefoot
22:38 Mr_Sheesh for ultrasound are people using 'chirp' mode or just a timer between pulses lately?
22:38 Tom_itx cause you like the feel of the shavings between your toes?
22:38 Jak_o_Shadows chirp mode? I generally repeat the sensor pulse as fast as I can.
22:39 Mr_Sheesh chirp mode = send a ping; wait until it returns (or timeout); handle it; rinse, repeat
22:39 Tom_itx polaroid sonar worked pretty well
22:39 Mr_Sheesh so closer = faster ping rate
22:39 Tom_itx good for about 26 feet
22:39 Tom_itx ~
22:40 Tom_itx i bet alot of ppl here don't even know what those are
22:41 Mr_Sheesh Heh, I do, never had one, just older polaroids :P
22:41 Tom_itx i had 2 or 3 different style control boards
22:41 Mr_Sheesh Still have a couple (used to have to use those with an adapter to take pics of OScope traces, to turn in for reports @ work etc.)
22:42 Tom_itx http://tom-itx.dyndns.org:81/~webpage/largebot/largebot_index.php
22:42 Tom_itx that had one on it
22:43 MrCurious only one metal splinter... WIN!
22:43 Tom_itx i prolly still have some buried in the skin
22:43 Tom_itx brass migrages in
22:44 theBear i'm pretty sure i had an ally drilling-shard in my heel for a few weeks :(
22:44 poli so what are feeler switches?
22:45 Tom_itx wires
22:45 Tom_itx on micro switches
22:45 Mr_Sheesh ICL 7660 sorta dates it, but works :) So did 74S40's etc. - I do still have a 7410 phobia, from high school. Teacher order 3 of them, received 3 grocery bags full from Digikey as a bonus as he was ordering for the school; They ran out 7-8 years later I think?
22:45 Mr_Sheesh Sorta work like cat whiskers, those feelers
22:45 Tom_itx http://tom-itx.dyndns.org:81/~webpage/lightseeker/lightseeker_index.php
22:45 Mr_Sheesh usually use flexible wire
22:45 Tom_itx that one had a bumper
22:46 Tom_itx with 2 switches
22:46 Mr_Sheesh Works :)
22:47 Mr_Sheesh Computer vision is SO much easier nowadays than in the 1970's :)
22:49 poli Mr_Sheesh: But I still miss khoros :(
22:50 Mr_Sheesh Don't think I ever used that. Not recognizing it, ofc there've been SO many pieces of hardware / software / etc. - Some pretty good :)
22:54 poli It was a block functionality image processor. You would just stack up image-related filters, detectors, changers and you would rapidly build a prototype of a solution for image analysis.
22:55 Mr_Sheesh Interesting, if it worked well :) Redo it as open source maybe? A thought.
23:05 MrCurious milled holes using a flat mill doing pecking
23:06 MrCurious i assume that is a normal method, and not a bad technique
23:18 Jak_o_Shadows Any advice on non-skid-steer systems?
23:44 Jak_o_Shadows You'd never see an all pnp h-bridge eh?
