13:14 rue_house I can
13:14 rue_house GuShh_, did you post yours?
13:14 GuShh_ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6E5ee6bTmT0&feature=em-subs_digest-vrecs
13:14 GuShh_ rue_house: I'll take a pic in a few and upload it
13:15 GuShh_ interesting outfit the guy is wearing
13:15 GuShh_ (youtube now sends me emails with such suggestions...)
13:16 rue_house probably english work code dress for that stuff
13:16 GuShh_ doctor octopus
13:16 rue_house dont like where he stands when he does that end drilling
13:17 GuShh_ who cares, that's one nice lathe!
13:17 rue_house looks like a fine one
13:17 GuShh_ "now start the lathe, and smoothly smoke your pipe"
13:17 GuShh_ "have a cup o' tea in the meantime"
13:17 rue_house heh
13:19 GuShh_ oh it's made in Australia
13:19 GuShh_ tafesa.edu.au
13:20 GuShh_ lots of weird videos in that account...
13:22 GuShh_ rue_house: http://gushh.net/tmp/dscn3708.jpg
13:23 GuShh_ you really think they cut stock for that last test?
13:25 rue_house when I saw mine, I got the impression all the numbers were just made up randomly to fit within the specs of the final product
13:25 rue_house but I'll get mine, we can see if they are identicle
13:26 GuShh_ rue_house: I just inspected the piece of paper, it seems those figures were hand written and are in fact not part of the original print (I see relief on the other side of the paper and I can't make out any machine defects on the digits) but I still think it's all a lie.
13:27 GuShh_ most numbers are made to exactly half of the specs, chances are they sit a woman with a pen and make her fill up a stack of these with identical values.
13:27 GuShh_ or with a tiny jitter factor :p
13:29 rue_house mine is 8.5x14, and looks like its been photocopied about 1000000 times
13:30 GuShh_ We hereby certify these records are a lie, as is this certification. booya!
13:30 GuShh_ Here's the thing, why even bother with the paper then
13:32 rue_house ink dosn't run with water...
13:33 GuShh_ I have a document inspection thingy with backlight, uv, etc. But there's not that much you can do with it
13:34 GuShh_ Oh you could murder someone with it... cast iron.
13:34 rue_house I'll try acetone on the ink
13:34 rue_house http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/projects/lathe/p1050166.jpg
13:34 rue_house http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/projects/lathe/p1050165.jpg
13:35 rue_house http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/projects/lathe/p1050155.jpg <-- the borring tool I made
13:35 rue_house http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/projects/lathe/p1050158.jpg <-- gearbox access mod of mine
13:35 GuShh_ heh this one is double side print, so the title, model and inspector are on the other side
13:35 rue_house http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/projects/lathe/p1050160.jpg <-- black one at the top is plastic
13:36 GuShh_ boring tool made out of regular steel?
13:36 GuShh_ oh with a tab for the toolpost, neat idea
13:36 Tom_itx all these fancy toys
13:36 rue_house http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/projects/lathe/p1050162.jpg <-- almost all my tooling, I didnt take pics of the dial indicator or tailstock accessories
13:36 GuShh_ and the cutting bit is regular tool steel?
13:37 rue_house yea, just ground to whatever shape
13:37 GuShh_ I really think they come from the same factory
13:37 rue_house I could do internal threading maybe one day
13:37 GuShh_ even that tiny hole at the bottom of the side of the bed is the same
13:37 GuShh_ big internal threading heh
13:37 Tom_itx you need a set of carbide boring bars
13:37 Tom_itx thread cutter
13:38 GuShh_ shouldn't the belt tensioner be on the outer portion of the belt
13:38 rue_house GuShh_, looking at it I agree, most are 50%
13:38 rue_house GuShh_, meh
13:38 GuShh_ oh so you can "reverse" the lever by doing that?
13:38 Tom_itx yeah rue want's to wear his belt out prematurely
13:38 GuShh_ -_-
13:39 GuShh_ I'm simply asking heh
13:39 rue_house GuShh_, yo have a serial number on the end?
13:39 GuShh_ I do, also assumed they all had the same serial number
13:39 GuShh_ like cheap DMMs do
13:39 GuShh_ I bought several, all had the same serial.
13:40 GuShh_ well the lathe itself has a serial, then the inspection sheet has a "mfg no"
13:40 GuShh_ 1204111
13:40 GuShh_ plant manager J.Z. inspector S.B.L
13:40 Tom_itx report it stolen
13:40 GuShh_ I'm G.J.F
13:40 rue_shop2 these specs are a lie, this is a 100% photocopy
13:40 GuShh_ And we can't be wasting time writing our full names.
13:40 rue_shop2 acetone dosn't touch the 'hand ink'
13:40 rue_shop2 nor does water
13:41 GuShh_ let's sue China
13:41 rue_shop2 that means its toner
13:41 GuShh_ let's transfer the toner to their foreheads
13:41 rue_shop2 is your mfg num the same as mine?
13:41 rue_shop2 hmm no
13:41 GuShh_ bah why are fancy inserts and holders so expensive here
13:42 GuShh_ specially the ones from israel
13:42 GuShh_ which everyone swears they're the best
13:42 GuShh_ ISCAR
13:42 rue_shop2 but its odd, I'd swear I see an imression
13:43 GuShh_ look at the iscar logo and turn it around, what do you read?
13:43 GuShh_ god damn jews man.
13:43 rue_shop2 oh, its not!
13:43 GuShh_ reads JUDA
13:43 rue_shop2 the acetone takes apart the toner, but not the 'hand ink'
13:43 rue_shop2 wtf kinda ink they use that acetone cant tape apart!
13:43 GuShh_ zomg, where the specs any close to reality though?
13:43 GuShh_ chinese radioactive ink of course
13:44 GuShh_ extracted from their dead employees eyes
13:44 rue_shop2 my table isn't 100% level/flat, so they are all invalid anyhow
13:44 GuShh_ and the poop from their fingernails.
13:44 GuShh_ hrm
13:45 GuShh_ for most operations I don't think it matters that much.
13:45 GuShh_ rue_shop2: the black nut by the spindle shaft is the pre-tensioner?
13:46 GuShh_ (the loader or however it's called)
13:46 GuShh_ they don't even give you the tools to adjust
13:51 rue_house the black gear
13:51 rue_house its plastic
13:51 rue_house yea, like I say about the 4mm allen
13:51 rue_house I'd even be willing to give up the two screwdrivers
13:52 rue_house for the other wrench or some dedicated allens
13:54 rue_house I'd bet if they really did those tests, theyd have thrown in the test peices
13:54 rue_house all invalid after its shipped anyhow
14:12 GuShh_ Tom_itx: carbide maybe for steel, what about alu and plastics?
14:12 GuShh_ delrin, ptfe
14:12 GuShh_ actually I wasn't able to find the temperature rating for delrin (the common type sold everywhere)
14:13 GuShh_ I know there are many variations though
14:37 Tom_itx carbide works great on aluminum and plastic
14:59 GuShh_ Tom_itx : I mean, if you are only going to bore platic or aluminum maybe carbide is overkill or not a requirement
15:00 GuShh_ what a silly little plastic fan on the motor... I wonder if it even serves its purpose
15:32 Tom_itx you'd be surprised how abrasive some plastic can be
15:32 Tom_itx and it likes uber sharp tools
16:16 GuShh_ Tom_itx: bah the same could be said about wood!
16:16 GuShh_ specially the bark and sapwood portions.
16:16 GuShh_ lots of silicone
16:17 GuShh_ err silicon
16:30 GuShh_ http://mikesworkshop.weebly.com/rotary-broaching.html
16:36 GuShh_ Tom_itx: http://mikesworkshop.weebly.com/mill-modifications-and-tooling.html
16:59 rue_shop2 ok, my homemade motor works, with a bit of tuning I got it going so fast it blew out the armature windings
17:05 GuShh_ lol
17:05 GuShh_ rue_shop2 : what's the goal?
17:43 rue_shop2 just to gain experiance making motors
18:14 rue_house whats turning during the rotary broaching?
18:15 GuShh_ rue_house: the "bit" or cutter
18:15 GuShh_ it's at an angle
18:15 rue_house oh
18:15 rue_house that makes more sense
18:15 GuShh_ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8EhGxH7z_w
18:18 GuShh_ rue_house: not sure if the indexing ring is what allows this angle to follow the design
18:20 GuShh_ rue_house: in wood working a similar tool exists for diamond inserts in which a plate with the design is held by the work (wood) and then two cutters are placed inside the pattern, then these cutters turn, since they're spring steel they pop out toward the edges of the pattern as it rotates, the person using it would then push slightly so the cutters would bite onto the wood, leaving the designed pattern.
18:20 GuShh_ (well I mentioned diamond inserts since that's the most common type, but you can design just about anything)
18:21 rue_house http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTsPXFy7Xx0
18:21 rue_house wouldn't it be easier to make that and use it in a drillpress
18:22 GuShh_ that looks like a commercial broacher
18:23 GuShh_ rue_house: in essence the offset rotation makes it "chisel" the material down to the bottom
18:24 GuShh_ just like you'd chisel your way into a mortise when it comes to wood
18:24 rue_house not hard to make something offcentre like that I do it all the time on my lathe
18:24 GuShh_ question is, does it broach always into a taper?
18:25 eadthem anyone know where you would buy SMC valves?
18:25 GuShh_ because that slight offset would mean there's a hard limit
18:25 GuShh_ and because of the offset I bet the "hole" is tapered too
18:25 GuShh_ but maybe I'm wrong
18:26 GuShh_ lawl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOGIr2vnj0c
18:30 GuShh_ wanky intro, nice tools though
18:30 GuShh_ those CNC grinders are neat
18:32 GuShh_ how much you reckon one of those big broaches cost?
18:34 GuShh_ ugh poor lathe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgGXQUeYNKw
18:39 GuShh_ http://bedair.org/9x20camlock/9x20project.html
18:39 GuShh_ finding lots of great stuff for these lathes
18:46 Tom_itx GuShh_, is that your page?
18:46 Tom_itx earlier ^^
18:46 GuShh_ unless it's gushh.net then it's not
18:48 Tom_itx http://mikesworkshop.weebly.com/mill-modifications-and-tooling.html
18:48 GuShh_ not mine, just wanted to share it
18:48 GuShh_ lots of good ideas there
18:50 Tom_itx http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rI-15fovYEY
18:51 GuShh_ it works on the same principle the wood ones use
18:51 GuShh_ you can even hear it hitting the edges of the pattern inside the tool body
19:29 GuShh_ rue_house: http://bedair.org/Tumble/Tumble.html I wonder if that still works when you've got the belt and tensioner in there, he converted it to a DC motor with direct drive...
19:58 rue_shop2 I dont want a dc motor
19:59 rue_shop2 the controllers alwasy fail
19:59 eadthem 3 phase brushless dc or brushed
20:25 rue_house plain ole AC motors dont fail
20:25 rue_house unless severly abused
20:33 GuShh_ rue_house : the ones on the mini lathes fail due to how poorly designed they are and how crappy the components they use are...
20:33 GuShh_ a good driver shouldn't fail like that
20:33 GuShh_ surely a 3 phase AC with a VFD is nicer
20:33 GuShh_ but whatever comes first will go in.
20:35 GuShh_ eadthem: I'd get a treadmill dc motor and either the treadmill controller or my own .... or a 3 phase ac with the vfd, it has to be cheap and readily available so those are the two criteria
20:35 GuShh_ I don't know what other options there are
20:44 eadthem something i found recently you can get decent washing machine motors on ebay 3 phase AC (up to 10,000 RPM) and standard 2 speed
20:44 eadthem like 1/2 and 3/4 horse
20:44 eadthem ended up getting a 3/4 2 speed for my bandsaw
20:44 eadthem they go realy cheep
21:16 zhanx My OCD kicked in and I tested the camp stove for burn time, heat and number of pumps on the thing to get the run time. 2 hours of my life gone
21:18 zhanx but i found out i can do ten pumps on it every 3 minutes for a boil time of 7 minutes for 1 pint of water
21:35 MrCurious rue_house: something about this pic makes it appear to belong in the movie SAW http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/projects/lathe/p1050162.jpg
21:40 MrCurious i could sure go for something amazingly cool to look at
22:41 eadthem ok where do you buy solinoid valves from
22:41 eadthem i was hopeing for SMC but tbh anythign with a good selection at the moment
23:41 rue_house MrCurious, I'v not seen that one
23:41 rue_house eadthem, ebay
23:41 rue_house $11 and up
23:41 eadthem as this is for work i would preffer a source i can count on being around for a while
23:42 rue_house they are
23:42 rue_house china manufs
23:42 rue_house or check out alibaba express
23:43 rue_house http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2X-Free-Shipping-4V110-06-5Ports2Position-Single-Solenoid-Pneumatic-Air-Valve-1-8-BSPT-With-Led/634378840.html
23:43 eadthem airtac uses british pipe thread not NPT
23:43 eadthem there avalable on amazon
23:44 rue_house whatever
23:45 eadthem http://www.smcusa.com/top-navigation/cad-models.aspx/87593 i might see if we can buy direct via work tomarow
