09:00 rue_house "they were also able to hide the program by employing the same method Apple uses to conceal the location of its apps on iOS devices, thereby making the user unaware that their device has been infected. "
09:00 rue_house they just put files in places so convoluded you cant find them
09:01 GuShH rue_house: lol
09:06 theBear heh basically, but on a serious note, that's the kinda thing apple would do, make a secret hidey backdoor for their own whatever-control-software, and wtf kinda phone allows a charger to upload code ? bad enough treating odd pullup/down values on the data lines as definitions of available charge/supply current
09:17 GargantuaSauce_ uhhh
09:17 GargantuaSauce_ that's the same serial interface that's used to backup/restore, sync, etc
09:17 GargantuaSauce_ rooting in android works in not a dissimilar way
09:18 GargantuaSauce_ and i dont know why all the articles refer to it as a "charger" when it's a damn computer
09:19 theBear huh ? doesn't it go into emergency/firmware update/recovery mode for updates and just use normal online-usb for sync etc ?
09:20 theBear and rooting in android works a bunch of different ways depending on specifics
09:20 theBear hmm, i suppose the phone IS booted during charging, but surely they wouldn't have stressed the while charging unless it's sneaky, for example i'd feel lied to if it didn't at least indicate to the user that it was on a non-data/charging connection only
09:26 GargantuaSauce_ i think the only real connection to charging it has is "user plugs cable into convenient orifice"
09:29 theBear but you know what i mean (i only see them when they need repair, but i'm sure that...) how most phones have a clear lightning bolt or mainsplug or similar icon that is SUPPOSED to indicate no usb data connectivity, either connected to a 'dumb'(ish in apples case) charger or forced to no-sync/nomassstorage/nothing modes if plugged into an actual pc/host
15:51 GuShH anyone here owns a chinese metal lathe, or rather any modern cheap lathe (they're all china made, often rebranded and overpriced) -- if so please PM me I would like to know a few details and whether it's worth it or not, there aren't that many models out there and some are just variations of a basic design. anyway thanks.
15:53 Tom_itx also ask in #linuxcnc
15:58 RifRaf i have one
15:59 GuShH Tom_itx: thanks I will
15:59 GuShH RifRaf: oh?
16:00 Tom_itx yeah i forgot RifRaf got one a few years back
16:00 Tom_itx rue just got one
16:00 Tom_itx this year iirc
16:00 RifRaf GuShH, details of mine are http://www.gasweld.com.au/575873-toolex.html?___SID=U
16:01 GuShH RifRaf: one of the ones I'm looking at is the CQ6123/750
16:01 RifRaf i was happy with it and done many hours work, the thin drive belt was crap and keeps breaking
16:01 GuShH 750 is the mm in length
16:01 GuShH usable that is
16:01 GuShH between centers
16:01 RifRaf so i cut a standand v belt in half and has never broke again
16:02 GuShH RifRaf: any possibility on modding the belt?
16:02 GuShH ah that looks similar to the one I'm looking at
16:02 GuShH but on 500
16:02 MrCurious expensive place
16:02 GuShH RifRaf: brochure in spanish but you get the idea http://i1.minus.com/iPblcEm7KHPkk.jpg
16:02 GuShH looks like the same series, different length
16:02 RifRaf GuShH, yes just had to make it narrower
16:02 GuShH 750mm seems to cost just as much as the tiny ones so might as well go for it
16:03 RifRaf i never wanted longer, but to hold wider parts would be nice at times
16:03 GuShH true
16:03 RifRaf and a bigger through hole for bigger than 19mm parts
16:03 GuShH the two steady rests are a nice feature for me
16:03 GuShH one is fixed and the other one isn't, right?
16:04 MrCurious what is caja semi norton?
16:04 GuShH too bad it's "semi norton" because it has external gears for the TPI etc
16:04 Tom_itx these have bigger thru holes: http://www.oil-country-lathes.com/
16:04 RifRaf i have never used then
16:04 GuShH that's the "gearbox"
16:04 GuShH exactly what I'm talking about
16:04 GuShH true nortons require no external gearing change
16:04 GuShH you just set the step with a couple levers
16:04 GuShH but that's often available on bigger lathes
16:04 Tom_itx 32" bore
16:04 GuShH RifRaf: no play nothing bad other than the belt?
16:05 GuShH my wood lathe has a shitty belt as well, I don't like it.
16:06 GuShH I question whether these longer models suffer in any way compared to the smaller ones, at least in overall stability
16:06 RifRaf GuShH, there is minor play in things, but a bit of tuning helps alot, have done some fine work on it
16:06 GuShH hmm
16:06 GuShH might be a matter of luck also
16:06 GuShH what sort of tuning, did you have to calibrate the tailstock?
16:06 RifRaf yeah, i made new parts for it too, like better tool holder etc
16:06 GuShH I don't have any serious measuring tools at the moment, just a digital caliper.
16:07 GuShH hrmm
16:07 Tom_itx get a dial indicator
16:07 Tom_itx or last word
16:07 GuShH is it that bad or did you make one to your style
16:07 RifRaf the tailstock has always been nice and centered
16:07 Tom_itx that and calipers / micrometers is about all i use
16:07 GuShH Tom_itx: yes, been looking at them but like everything here it's a chore to buy stuff
16:07 RifRaf was just making things, also made a ball turning head
16:07 RifRaf gotta start this print, brb
16:08 GuShH I know a place that often has used ones (mitutoyo and such) but it's hard for me to tell whether they're within specs or complete trash
16:08 GuShH RifRaf: do you do a lot of threading with it?
16:08 Tom_itx check the bed near the spindle
16:08 GuShH the auto feed works fine? does it dis-engage with a mechanical lever / split nut?
16:09 RifRaf GuShH, nots lots of threading, but cut threads where needed
16:09 GuShH Tom_itx: If I buy one of these it'll be new, but I'm still trying to decide whether I get the big one or the tiny one
16:09 Tom_itx get the big one
16:09 Tom_itx you'll forget the price in a day or so
16:09 GuShH they market the small one as "for precision work" then what the hell is the big one for
16:09 GuShH price difference isn't that much
16:10 Tom_itx bigger precision work
16:10 Tom_itx precision is their way of saying tiny
16:10 RifRaf am lovin the printer after getting the settings improved, the changes were not taking effect before
16:10 Tom_itx then you can cnc it
16:10 GuShH heh
16:11 Tom_itx couple steppers and drivers
16:11 GuShH that gearbox seems such a hassle
16:11 Tom_itx spindle encoder
16:11 GuShH or a magnet and hall effect switch
16:11 Tom_itx motor controller
16:11 Tom_itx linuxcnc is free
16:12 GuShH aren't these single phase induction motor driven?
16:12 GuShH so vfd...
16:12 Tom_itx could be
16:12 Tom_itx couple mesa cards and you're set
16:14 GuShH I'm actually looking at a cheapie half hp vfd at the moment
16:15 GuShH no panel mount potentiometer, but you can wire an external one
16:15 GuShH possibly control it through serial (unless it's just for programming)
16:15 Tom_itx rs422?
16:15 GuShH looks like it
16:16 Tom_itx the mesa 5i25 does sserial
16:16 Tom_itx is rs422 differential?
16:16 Tom_itx i got a serial differential card
16:16 GuShH I wanted an LG VFD but the dude increased the price tag after I asked him a couple questions, I'm not up for that.
16:16 Tom_itx 7i47
16:17 Tom_itx wtf
16:17 GuShH so instead I'm looking at a new siemens 0.37kW from the Sinamics series
16:17 GuShH G110 I think
16:18 GuShH the LG was a lot nicer though
16:18 RifRaf added a lcd controller the other night http://imagebin.org/260417
16:19 GuShH sexy
16:19 GuShH not you, the mendel.
16:20 RifRaf heh, printing the first real parts on it today
16:21 GuShH Tom_itx: no clue if it's differential, they do call for a converter "magic box" if you want to interface it with the PC
16:21 GuShH just another product to sell you heh
16:45 GuShH RifRaf: so thumbs up on that particular lathe or have you found anything better?
16:45 GuShH (on that price range)
16:46 GuShH also I'm kind of curious about your new toolpost heh
16:47 GuShH you do have access to a milling machine though, I don't yet.
16:47 GuShH those quick change ones sure aren't cheap....
16:47 GuShH what I find interesting on this lathe is that the handles aren't rounded / cast and polished, they're flat machined... odd or do the new equipment all use this style?
16:49 RifRaf GuShH, i never saw anything better for the price, actually getting it again this weekend and setting it up again
16:50 GuShH they seem to offer the bench on all these chinese sites but nobody sells it here
16:50 GuShH http://metalmaster.en.made-in-china.com/productimage/uqZxMotKANhE-2f0j00geFTpEqRHJck/China-Mini-Lathe-Lathemaster-CQ6123-500-750-.html
16:52 RifRaf i got a proper stand for mine as well, nice cabinet
17:56 GuShH RifRaf: yeah without stand I'll have to worry where to put it heh
18:15 RifRaf starting to get the settings tuned now http://imagebin.org/260613
18:34 Tom_itx RifRaf, what is that part?
18:35 Tom_itx and are you printing PLA or ABS?
18:41 RifRaf abs, just a test cube of sorts, with 10% infill to save abs while testing
18:41 RifRaf just about finished, is ten times better than yesterdays
18:56 theBear rock hard abba dabbas ... tricey wicey triceps !
19:23 Tom_itx yaba daba dooo
19:33 GuShH this is unfair
19:33 GuShH why am I not as drunk as theBear?
19:33 GuShH oh what a poet.
19:34 Tom_itx don't you know it
19:35 ShH burps in agree
19:35 GuShH at least I'm having a Miller
19:37 GuShH hmm they make wifi room thermostats ?
19:37 GuShH why wifi at all?
19:38 Tom_itx so the utilities can reach and control them for you
19:38 GuShH lol
19:39 Tom_itx they give them to you here
19:39 Tom_itx free
19:39 Tom_itx i wasn't kidding...
19:39 GuShH can has one?
19:48 GuShH RifRaf: got her all tuned up now?
19:48 GuShH theBear must be really pissed ...
