00:51 MrCurious google balance bot
00:52 MrCurious interesting terms motor driver, pid
00:52 MrCurious get a 10DOF i2c board off ebay for like $16
00:52 MrCurious that will give you 3axis of acelerometer, gyro, and compas
00:53 MrCurious krigu: you still there?
00:53 krigu oh, thanks!
00:53 MrCurious havent made one, but i have read about em, and those words should get you started
00:53 krigu i would like to build the most of it by myself to get the best learning. i will google it!
00:54 krigu or what kind of robot would you recommend to start with? i don't think a small car which can move forward and back keep me excited :)
00:55 MrCurious you have a raspberry pi... get some motor drivers (ebay $10 for 2 motors)
00:55 MrCurious and some geared dc motors
00:55 MrCurious and a web cam and wifi
00:55 MrCurious and make a mobile camera then teach the bot how to traverse a hallway
00:55 MrCurious opencv/simplecv will help with that
00:56 krigu good point! maybe i will start with that
00:56 MrCurious use this to give it speech commands and voice output http://stefanlarsson.me/tricks-of-the-trade/linux-voice-authentication/
00:56 MrCurious and check your PM ;)
00:58 krigu thanks!! :) should i get dc motors or "servo" motors?
00:59 krigu i found this 16 channel servo driver for the raspi: http://goo.gl/3WJXO
00:59 MrCurious servo motors only have 180 deg of movement unless they are continous rotation
00:59 MrCurious havent used continous rotation, so not sure how the speed control works
01:00 MrCurious nice. i bet that is a PWM led controler
01:07 Triffid_Hunter krigu: get an arduino as well.. rpi is not good at hard realtime signal generation such as PWM
01:12 MrCurious good advice
01:12 MrCurious http://www.ebay.com/itm/Iduino-New-Pro-Mini-atmega168-5V-16M-Replace-ATmega128-Arduino-Compatible-Nano-/271193892594?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f246a66f2
01:13 MrCurious or that for $6 (save some $$$
01:13 MrCurious another cheap and better one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nano-V3-0-ATMEGA328-with-mini-USB-cable-Compatible-with-Arduino-/300898648598?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item460ef50216
01:15 MrCurious that and being able to offload mundane robotic control and sensing stuff to a dedicated controler makes stuff easier
01:15 krigu ok, i will save all your links and get through it. thanks very much
01:16 MrCurious best camera i have seen for robotics is ps3 eye cam, though i think the raspberry pi module may be better (smaller)
01:17 krigu i should have one around at home
01:19 MrCurious i think thats all the hints i have off the cuff...
01:20 krigu thats more than enough to start i think. i will try to get it all together what i want to do and get back to the channel the next days to post the parts.
01:20 MrCurious good plan
01:20 MrCurious good luck!
01:21 krigu thanks!
01:22 MrCurious OUCH! ... HOT GLUE IS HOT!
01:23 orlok and sticky!
01:23 orlok oh so sticky!
01:25 GargantuaSauce i really like the lower-temperature stuff<
01:26 MrCurious i should finish my 3d printer (extruder)
01:26 GargantuaSauce cause i'ts workable for a few seconds and barely sticks to your fingers
01:26 Triffid_Hunter I haven't used my hot glue gun in ages.. hot glue stick sliced into pieces + SMD reflow hot air gun = epic win
01:26 orlok Triffid_Hunter: heh, nice
01:26 orlok i got a more "paint stripper" style hot air gun
01:27 orlok used it for working with shapelock
01:27 Triffid_Hunter http://triffid-hunter.no-ip.info/101_0053.JPG <-- typical result of that technique
01:27 GargantuaSauce i've been sitting on all the parts to upgrade my mendel to have 3 extruders for weeks now :/
01:27 GargantuaSauce gotta get over dat lazy<
01:28 MrCurious easy to start projects, not always fun to finish them
01:29 MrCurious once you get to the point where you "get it" and can see the end, then teh chase is over, and it stops being fun
01:29 orlok Triffid_Hunter: what sort of conenctors were those? were they keyed?
01:32 MrCurious openbr built, but tests fail. seems i am missing some config files and image fies
01:38 Triffid_Hunter orlok: XT-60, keyed, rated to 80A. common on R/C cars, can get a whole pack of them from hobbyking for a few dollars
03:23 RifRaf anyone have these http://www.motors.wrobots.com/buhler-1.php and find them almost impossible to mount and use?
04:09 theBear hmm, looks like it's suppose to go into a 'tube' with a notch for the lump at the front, and notches in a flat plate for the stuff on the encoder body, then you screw it down with that screw
04:10 RifRaf hey, yeah only has one screw hole, from a hp deskjet 500
04:10 RifRaf awesome motors
04:10 Triffid_Hunter RifRaf: I'd just 3d print a clamp for it
04:10 RifRaf just hard to use, so i made a bracket today
04:10 RifRaf http://imagebin.org/255886
04:11 RifRaf allows use of adjustable belt
04:11 RifRaf have to make some hubs for the main gear still
04:12 RifRaf those motors give 2016 counts per rev with the encoder
04:12 RifRaf Triffid_Hunter, i wanna see your 3d stuff
04:12 Triffid_Hunter RifRaf: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:78390 / http://www.thingiverse.com/triffid_hunter/designs / https://picasaweb.google.com/114006544968779005866/Mendel?noredirect=1
04:13 RifRaf you around friday arvo? have to goto goldcoast again, could drop off that ups
04:13 Triffid_Hunter yeah I should be
04:14 Triffid_Hunter gimme a bell on <number in pm> when you're an hour or so away
04:15 RifRaf yep no worries, will let you know beforehand, if i don't work friday can get away before lunch
04:16 RifRaf hopefully can get the gyro working before then and bring it
04:17 RifRaf can fly a small plane on the computer with it using example code so it does work
04:18 RifRaf but without a magnetometer it still loses its way, will be great to try balancing better though, just need 1 axis from gyro
04:19 RifRaf would you believe that i have these faulhaber encoders that are giving my over 20000 counts per revolution? they are just 3v though and not enough torque, there must be a special use for them though
04:21 RifRaf wow they are alot cleaner than i imagined
04:22 RifRaf lol sorry, that was refering to your wheels Triffid_Hunter
04:22 RifRaf the blue ones
04:22 RifRaf or is that a rendering?
04:30 Triffid_Hunter RifRaf: yeah blue is a render
04:31 Triffid_Hunter the real ones were printed in black, and are visible on what should be a fairly familiar R/C car chassis ;)
04:34 RifRaf yep noticed that :), the blue ones had me goin wow for a bit, but when my eyes focuesed a bit noticed that shadows were too good
04:35 RifRaf how many dpi do you get? or watever you measure it in?
04:50 RifRaf are the wheels made to use the standard rc hex hub?
04:59 Triffid_Hunter RifRaf: if those hubs are standard, they go on standard hubs
05:00 Triffid_Hunter RifRaf: printer resolution is tricky because we don't lay down dots, we lay down a continuous bead of plastic, and the positional accuracy is a lot smaller than the width of the bead
05:00 Triffid_Hunter I get maybe 25 microns precision, 50-75 microns accuracy, generally bead width of about 0.5mm but I can go down to 0.35 if I want
05:01 Triffid_Hunter I generally go with 0.2mm layer height, 0.05 to 0.25 is my range. would need a different nozzle for larger, and thinner filament for smaller
05:02 RifRaf sounds awesome, so must take some time then
05:03 Triffid_Hunter yeah, wheels took a few hours
05:04 RifRaf can you set and forget and come back later?
05:04 RifRaf like no intervention needed
05:10 Triffid_Hunter RifRaf: absolutely
05:11 Triffid_Hunter RifRaf: I've started prints remotely across the network and not come in until it's complete and the printer has turned itself off
05:12 RifRaf nice, i think i want one
05:14 RifRaf makin the most of cnc access while there but won't last forever
05:29 Triffid_Hunter RifRaf: takes a fair bit of tuning to achieve that, we're only just starting to get to the point where they're that good out of the box
05:39 RifRaf k, havin a look will have to do for now then, am impressed
05:41 RifRaf this gyro impresses me too, whata difference it can make
05:41 Triffid_Hunter RifRaf: http://youtu.be/wksLdtMm6Ko <-- here's a vid of mine printing I made a bit back
05:43 RifRaf ok will look now, heres what was a good tutorial for me with the gyro stuff http://www.instructables.com/id/Accelerometer-Gyro-Tutorial/
05:45 Triffid_Hunter there's several printed quadcopters around these days
05:48 RifRaf thats pretty cool stuff, so is pre melted somewhere or liquid till it hits air?
05:49 RifRaf have never looked into this stuff, sorry for the basic questions
05:50 Jak_o_Android Managed to get my ultrasonic sensors,
05:50 RifRaf Jak_o_Android, did you get your usonic sensor working?
05:50 RifRaf heh, working?
05:51 Jak_o_Android Had access to a scope today, the trigger pulse was inconsistent
05:51 RifRaf cool, a scope would be handy for that
05:51 Jak_o_Android Swapped chip, now it works
05:51 RifRaf a different sensor module?
05:51 Jak_o_Android Oh, yeah, wouldve struggled for agea without one.
05:52 RifRaf cool
05:52 Jak_o_Android Nahum, different uC,
05:52 RifRaf oh really? same type, just different unit or other uC?
05:52 Jak_o_Android Still a msp430, but one with more pins, and a hardware uart, as well as more flash
05:53 Jak_o_Android 16kb instead odd 2kb
05:53 RifRaf k, i like having more than 1 or 2 board to test with as well
05:54 RifRaf and bigger is better, is nice using 2560 atmegas now and not having to worry about running out of pins
05:54 RifRaf and memory, am a lazy coder
05:55 Jak_o_Android Yeah, now I can splurge on the motor driver, may be able to get fancy
05:55 Triffid_Hunter RifRaf: it's melted right at the tip
05:55 Triffid_Hunter melt zone is maybe 10-20mm long
06:03 RifRaf so you feed it a string
06:04 RifRaf sorry i am a bit slow, it makes sence now
07:29 Triffid_Hunter RifRaf: yeah the filament I use is ~3mm diameter.. got it pinched between a bolt with teeth cut into it and a standard skateboard bearing to force it down through the hotend
08:29 rue_bed RifRaf, you making a printer?
08:31 Tom_itx are you?
09:02 rue_house I am
09:02 rue_house less I paused for a bit
13:36 haryv What would be best to guide a robotic lawn mower in a strait line, make it turn 180 and cut the next line of grass then make a run to the compost pole and dump it, and return back to the same path? dgps, laser, doppler RF, open cv or gyro?
13:36 Tom_itx ask rue_house when he gets in
13:36 Tom_itx he has a mower bot
13:37 Tom_itx 3-4 hrs
13:38 haryv does he have video of it?
13:40 Tom_itx i dunno
13:41 Tom_itx http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/
13:41 Tom_itx you can nose around and see if you can find one
13:42 Tom_itx http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/robots/mowerbot2/
13:42 Tom_itx http://eds.dyndns.org/~ircjunk/robots/mowerbot/mowerbot.htm
13:49 haryv video of the mower in action
13:51 haryv taxes fees going up like everythign else ugg. pits being self employed :)
13:52 chris_99 how do the optical rangefinders work?
14:04 Hukka Depends
14:04 Hukka Can be time of flight, or angle
14:10 chris_99 doesn't time of flight require very high speed circuitry
14:11 Hukka I haven't seen one for less than 100 bucks
14:11 Hukka So yes, it's not trivial
14:37 Ademan GargantuaSauce: ping. With your shift register approach I assume you wake every time interval and re-fill the entire shift register, is that correct?
15:03 krigu hello robo-friends. i want to dive into the robotics thing as soon as possible. i've got a arduino starter kit and a raspberry pi. i fancy building a hexapod or quadrocopter but that is maybe too difficult to start with. is there a "must do" for a beginner or should i just buy a few servos and sensors and try to make something useful? :)
15:03 krigu i don't have a purpose for the robot yet.. maybe it would be cool if he could navigate around by himself, face/speech recognition
15:05 krigu and i would really like something with a gyro/accelerometer, just to fiddle around a bit :)
15:13 joink krigu: since it's quiet hour here. Disclaimer: I'm a beginner myself :) If you don't have too much general electronics knowledge there's somewhat of a "steepish" learning curve. Stay on the ground for the first bots :)
15:13 joink krigu: small driving bots following different stimuly is always fun, either line following, light/sound
15:14 joink also, there's a tradeoff somewhere between using analogue components vs. IC/programming :) learn were analogue solves a problem more easy
15:15 Hukka You might notice he already went away
16:22 GargantuaSauce Ademan: yeppers
16:22 GargantuaSauce well "every time interval" = every time one of the outputs needs to transition
16:23 GargantuaSauce i sort them all by value and save all the values at each transition first
16:23 GargantuaSauce then when the time comes, strobe the output register clock and push out new values
16:24 GargantuaSauce https://bitbucket.org/Ultrasauce/robots/src/e571b3de0f3110646e5d29d418a08e3ced4736b0/stm32/first-steps/servos.c?at=master
16:25 GargantuaSauce i won't claim this isnt garbage code because it is
16:26 GargantuaSauce and yes it busyloops for up to 2ms of every 20 and yes i should fix that to fire off an interrupt at each transition instead
20:22 zhanx glued 8 pieces of 3/4 blue insulation together today. in two 4 piece sections
20:23 zhanx vacuum formed body
20:27 rue_house dear god you had me worried yo ukilled yourself
20:28 Tom_itx rue_house somebody was asking about your mower bot today
20:28 rue_house I see
20:28 Tom_itx i showed them your vido
20:28 Tom_itx not.
20:28 zhanx never rue
20:28 rue_house mine just randomly navigates
20:28 zhanx pm rue
20:28 rue_house I should hope not z!
20:29 Tom_itx you should put up a video for it
20:29 rue_house I have a video for the old one
20:29 rue_house on youtube
20:29 rue_house ruenahcmohr
20:29 rue_house mowerbot
20:29 Tom_itx so link it to your webpage so we can find it
20:30 rue_house can I just add it to the todo list?
20:32 Tom_itx add it to the todone list
20:32 m_itx gives rue_house a round
20:33 e_house checks to see if its suitable for taking a na
20:34 zhanx http://cdn.designrfix.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/inspiration-3d-robots-40.jpg
20:34 zhanx just sent that to rue_house
20:34 rue_house he did!
20:34 Rif rue_house how about some video of your arm
20:34 zhanx i am vacuum forming the body
20:34 rue_house whcih arm rif?
20:34 rue_house zhanx, did you make a vacuum former?
20:34 Rif all of them, wanna see some action
20:34 zhanx with a wire frame support system, and yes
20:34 zhanx 24x48
20:34 zhanx inch
20:35 rue_house can I see the former you made?
20:35 rue_house Rif, me too
20:35 rue_house I need to sit down and make generic motor drivers
20:35 zhanx its a 2x1 frame with pfer board
20:35 zhanx the pre hole board
20:35 rue_house its not true till its photographed
20:36 zhanx with a 3.5 cfm pump, i might have borrowed
20:36 zhanx oh and got a 6000v fluke probe on loot
20:37 rue_house I have a old refrig compressor I got for a former, I ahve a propane tank to store vacuum
20:37 zhanx good idea i got a r-134 tank that is empty
20:37 rue_house but the belt I got is the wrong size, the temp electrical tape one I took in for sizing must have shrunk when I got to the auto store
20:38 zhanx pull a vacuum on that for fast vac's
20:38 rue_house yea
20:38 rue_house use a 1/4 turn valve
20:38 zhanx dump
20:38 rue_house I suppose its 14 psi max, could use a washing machine valve
20:38 zhanx no
20:38 zhanx they suck for that
20:38 Rif rue have you got any deskjet 500 motors, the beuler ones with encoder?
20:39 zhanx i have a whole printer rif
20:39 zhanx want it?
20:39 rue_house THATS IT! beuler!
20:39 rue_house I couldn't remmeber that name
20:39 Rif i made brackets to be able to use the motors
20:39 Rif beuhler
20:39 rue_house now if the guy who was trying to make a hydrualic arm were only still here
20:39 zhanx rif its been on my work desk for 6 months
20:39 zhanx out of ink
20:40 Rif http://imagebin.org/255886
20:40 rue_house zhanx,
20:40 zhanx me
20:40 rue_house http://www.ece.umd.edu/courses/enee359a/verilog_tutorial.pdf
20:40 rue_house something new for you to read :)
20:41 rue_house I found a verilog compiler for linux
20:41 rue_house been playinmg
20:41 zhanx k
20:41 rue_house wanna play too?
20:41 zhanx failed to download my laptop hd is about done
20:42 rue_house clunk of death?
20:42 Tom_itx rue_house, really?
20:42 Tom_itx where?
20:42 zhanx spin clunk
20:42 zhanx my system is on the 8 gig ssd
20:42 zhanx so i can still use it
20:42 rue_house Tom_itx, maybe its an emulator
20:42 Rif i am working unfortunately
20:44 zhanx need a new torch
20:45 rue_house the old one meet your boot?
20:46 zhanx no it met the movers and no workie
20:46 rue_house that laptop you kill mil grade?
20:46 zhanx which one
20:46 rue_house the one dieing
20:46 zhanx no
20:46 rue_house ah
20:47 zhanx took a crash on my bike tho
20:47 rue_house ok I need to....
20:47 zhanx rue i mocked up the base support for the foam for this robot today
20:47 rue_house do show
20:48 zhanx you are gonna hate my new standard.. and brb will get a photo
20:48 rue_house oh! check out the TLC5940 as a generic pwm chip!
20:50 zhanx ok uploading
20:51 zhanx its just 6x6" form drying and 14x22" foam
20:56 zhanx gmail hates me
20:56 rue_house why do 3 phase airplane motors have KV ratings?
20:58 zhanx why do i have a 6000v probe?
20:58 Tom_itx because you like to play with danger
20:58 zhanx true
20:58 zhanx but its because it works
21:00 zhanx https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-m3x3pKUygEI/UYBzj4HPLMI/AAAAAAAADxY/Z5l5sGIv3Mk/w659-h494/2013-04-30+21.36.10.jpg

21:00 zhanx 28x14" for the top one
21:00 Tom_itx what have you done with your mill?
21:01 zhanx and 6x6" for the neck piece
21:01 zhanx Tom_itx, fishing lures :D
21:01 Tom_itx you still have it?
21:01 zhanx yep
21:02 Tom_itx i forgot what software you were using with it
21:02 zhanx emc
21:02 Tom_itx linuxcnc?
21:02 zhanx yes
21:02 Tom_itx i got mine working pretty good now
21:02 zhanx cool
21:02 Tom_itx i really like the pendant i made
21:02 Tom_itx saves so much time
21:02 zhanx now its all how power for me
21:03 zhanx till this mold is done
21:03 zhanx http://cdn.designrfix.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/inspiration-3d-robots-40.jpg
21:03 zhanx making that with a vacuum former
21:03 zhanx wire frame
21:04 zhanx want to make people make cooler robots
21:04 zhanx or inspire them
21:07 zhanx oh and got a fuck mark on me from today
21:08 zhanx dude tried to drop a trailer on himself, i caught it, got a 6" mark across the reverse forearm
21:08 zhanx and a broken pinky
21:09 Tom_itx broken parts is not new to you
21:10 zhanx no its not, but wow was he dumb
21:10 Tom_itx i added a spindle speed monitor, cycle timer and some fixture setup buttons to my screen
21:10 Tom_itx zhanx
21:10 Tom_itx dumb is becoming a trend
21:11 ace4016 hrm, seems relevant here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqP3IpEqkk4 (not to current convo :P)
21:11 zhanx Tom_itx, it is
21:12 Tom_itx zhanx
21:12 zhanx i am tired of straining muscles for morons
21:12 Tom_itx they will run the world one day
21:12 Rif tom show off your cnc parts
21:12 Tom_itx why?
21:13 Rif i am interested in cnc stuff thats why
21:13 zhanx tom does make go ones
21:13 zhanx my cnc is ok
21:14 Tom_itx this is the axis test after the rebuild
21:14 Tom_itx http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhU7S8kifJ4&feature=youtu.be
21:15 Tom_itx this is milling one of my boxes
21:15 Tom_itx http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CEqokrtFI4&feature=youtu.be
21:16 Tom_itx this is a probe test
21:16 Tom_itx http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGuV86Su430&feature=youtu.be
21:17 zhanx oh fyi i am a paratrooper again times 3 jumping out of airplanes
21:17 Tom_itx i noticed the 500? mph drop
21:18 zhanx that sucked balls
21:18 zhanx 2 sec opening with a hell snap
21:18 zhanx my neck still hurts
21:21 Tom_itx Rif, it's not like the big ones
21:21 Tom_itx i've run those as well. i kinda miss that
21:21 Rif its still very nice
21:22 Rif cutting a 10meter pylon at moment on router
21:25 Tom_itx Rif, did you see the new psu and driver cabinet i made for it?
21:27 Tom_itx i need to get an engraving bit for some stuff
21:27 Tom_itx or make one
21:28 zhanx i got one pager motor etc..
21:28 Tom_itx i hear a halfround drill cut to a better point will work good
21:28 Rif tom nope didn't see, or was it in the video and i didn't look?
21:28 Tom_itx i've switched most of my cutters to carbide now
21:29 Rif yep have a few different engravers here
21:29 Tom_itx Rif, no here's the progression page for it: http://tom-itx.dyndns.org:81/~webpage/cnc/psu/psu_index.php
21:29 Tom_itx went from a 24v stepper system to 48v 18A
21:30 Rif looks very professional, will have better look when next sheet starts cutting
21:30 Tom_itx it's a commercial cabinet i got off ebay
21:43 zhanx need a fast method of removing foam
21:47 Tom_itx gasoline will disolve it
21:47 Tom_itx nichrome wire cutter
21:48 Tom_itx model plane guys make wings that way
21:49 zhanx that is toast oven right?
21:50 Tom_itx no
21:51 zhanx k
21:51 zhanx ok bed time
