00:20 ace4016 i'm cooking some chicken thighs drenched in a vinegrette
00:20 ace4016 I'll probably have a small salad and some pasta with it
01:07 katsmeow-afk Humans need expert systems, but the problem is they don_t often believe
01:07 katsmeow-afk it.... At least one high-performance medical diagnosis program sits
01:07 katsmeow-afk unused because the physicians it was designed to assist didn_t perceive
01:07 katsmeow-afk that they needed such assistance; they were wrong, but that doesn_t
01:07 katsmeow-afk matter....
01:11 katsmeow-afk Dave believes the hardest part of getting a complete SHRDLU to run again will be to fix the code in MicroPlanner since "the original MicroPlanner could not be maintained because it had hardwired some direct pointers into the state of ITS (as actual numbers!) and these 'magic numbers' were impossible to recreate circa 1977 when we approached Gerry Sussman about rewriting MicroPlanner in Conniver."
01:23 katsmeow-afk To deal with a rash of incidents where users sought out flaws in the system in order to crash it, a novel approach was taken. A command was implemented which anyone could run which caused the system to crash, which took away all the fun and challenge of doing so. It did, however, broadcast a message to say who was doing it.
01:58 rue_shop3 I got an amp from the recycle hut at the dump
01:58 rue_shop3 turns out there are two fried resistors in it
01:59 katsmeow-afk did you get any volts to push it along?
01:59 rue_shop3 turns out one of the transistors attached to one of the fried resistors is fried
01:59 katsmeow-afk check it's driver too,, and the bias circuit
01:59 rue_shop3 digging into it, they only apply signal to the high side of the amp transistors, the low side has a constant current like circuit on it
02:00 katsmeow-afk check the pot in the bias circuit for intermittant opens
02:00 katsmeow-afk o
02:00 katsmeow-afk wierd
02:00 rue_shop3 the preamp chip that drives the predrivers only has 8V across it
02:00 katsmeow-afk no one makes Class A amps anymore
02:00 rue_shop3 I think it should be 15V
02:01 rue_shop3 but the power supply for it is offset funny, made of a tonne of resistors and two zeners
02:01 rue_shop3 no electorlytic caps
02:01 rue_shop3 >confusion<
02:01 rue_shop3 I think I should send this along its way, even tho the driver transistors are fine
02:02 rue_shop3 its a jvc ax66
02:02 katsmeow-afk praps the psu is a separate box
02:02 rue_shop3 I cant find schematics for it, specifically
02:02 rue_shop3 there is no clearly +, - power supply
02:02 rue_shop3 I expect +- 15V
02:03 rue_shop3 or so
02:03 rue_shop3 wonder where the logic gets its supply
02:03 rue_shop3 the logic system is working fine
02:04 rue_shop3 but, odd again, I dont see why left AND right sides are blown, has to be the supply for the preamp
02:10 rue_shop3 there is only one resistors going to non-power circuitry, its a 47 ohm resistor, leads off too a lot of things
02:13 katsmeow-afk http://www.ebay.com/itm/JVC-AX-66-STEREO-INTEGRATED-AMPLIFIER-WORKS-GREAT-/320960509526
02:15 katsmeow-afk http://www.undernation.com/JVC+AX-66+BK-rapidshare-download.html
02:18 rue_house kat, thats a fake link, there will be no content from any of it
02:18 rue_house its just a search engine that gives you fake results for whatever you ask for
02:18 katsmeow-afk o
02:19 rue_house i hate it when google does that
02:20 rue_house but I would be verry greatfull if you could find a maintenace manual for it
02:21 rue_house two of the resistors are burned so badly there is no casing left to look at for colour clues
02:21 rue_house two of them LOOK like 10R, but read exactly 100R
02:22 rue_house I swear its not brown stripes cooked black
02:35 theos google has website blocker
02:49 rue_shop3 I cant block every fake search engine out there all on my own
02:50 rue_shop3 I found two transistors that look like they do the low voltage regulation, I hadn't noticed the 10R resistors that feed them
03:11 rue_shop3 WTF they use the panel lamp as the resistor for the zener ref on the negitive supply!?!?!
03:11 katsmeow-afk saves money, sure
03:12 katsmeow-afk remember they once used the speaker as the psu choke coil?
03:18 rue_shop3 !?
03:18 rue_shop3 I'm going to bed, this is too crazy
03:19 katsmeow-afk true
03:19 rue_shop3 I seen an amp that that output was grounded and the speaker was hooked across the supply rail, so it looked, I stopped looking at that one
03:19 katsmeow-afk in 40's and 50's, there was not a permanent magnet in some speakers, they used the electromagnet as the psu choke
03:20 katsmeow-afk most hifi apms (tubes, of course) had fairly good sized and not-cheap chokes to make better dc
03:20 rue_house it was a sub
03:20 rue_house huh
03:21 katsmeow-afk my grandfather had one like that, 6v6 outputs, "hifi" , and it really did sound great
03:24 katsmeow-afk http://www.google.com/search?q=speaker+choke+electromagnet
03:25 katsmeow-afk http://www.radioremembered.org/edspeaker.htm has a schematic of a speaker hooked in as the psu choke
03:28 katsmeow-afk zzzzz
06:07 katsmeow-afk you know the paper you are reading is old when you see this:
06:08 katsmeow-afk well, i can't copy/paste it :-/
06:10 katsmeow-afk *A "mouse" is a mechanical device named for the taillike cord that connects it to
06:10 katsmeow-afk the computer terminal. The user rolls it on the adjacent desktop to control the location
06:10 katsmeow-afk of a pointer on the display screen. Items of interest are selected by moving the mouse
06:10 katsmeow-afk so that the pointer on the screen is positioned over them and then pressing a button on
06:10 katsmeow-afk the top of the mouse.
13:20 e_house stret
13:45 rue_house its occurred to me that I should ocnvert the dead stereo into the audio source selector I keep wanting
13:50 rue_house I cn prolly find another amp with something wrong thats easier to fix
19:11 rue_mohr I cast the roller
19:16 rue_mohr cats taught me something
19:16 rue_mohr oops didn't scroll down, please ignore, obsolete context
19:21 rue_mohr katsmeow-afkdo you think I can use boat rollers as wheels to bend 2" EMT
21:46 katsmeow-afk no
21:47 katsmeow-afk wait,, by "boat rollers" you do not mean the rubber things?
21:48 katsmeow-afk if you mean aluminum roller in the shape of a boat roller, maybe, but prolly no,,, you know conduit benders are specific tot he size conduit they bend
22:08 rue_livingrm rubber things
22:10 rue_livingrm I dont know if the rubber is stiff enough
22:29 rue_shop3 music is playing
22:29 rue_shop3 but I can still think
22:29 rue_shop3 volume must be too low
22:53 katsmeow-afk i think if you do not cast the rollers to the size of the tubing, you'll flatten the tubing, maybe kink it too
23:20 rue_shop3 . ' ' . a 4 roller setup might go easier on it tube bends u that way
23:20 rue_shop3 it occurrs to me that I dont need to stock ANY AT cases
23:20 rue_shop3 I forsee no need to specifically case an AT computer
23:22 katsmeow-afk but yo can put other things into them, convert them into robovac recharging barns, for instance
23:22 rue_shop3 at what point will the pile of case side lids be large enough that I will be able to find a side for ANY of the cases I have?
23:22 rue_shop3 sometimes the thing closest to what you want to end up with is the worst thing to start with
23:35 rue_shop3 kat, its amazing how people will ridicule and demise someone who works to their goal till the person reaches it, and then they become jelous and try to take it all away
23:36 katsmeow-afk i agree
23:38 rue_shop3 damn, the temp control knob on the taoster oven broke off
23:38 rue_shop3 tho I suppose now I can dial it up more
23:39 rue_shop3 it seems that stripping down one computer and moving alot of stuff around made a bunch of space, I shall never understand how this works
23:40 tsmeow-afk worries about the r
23:41 rue_shop3 you in hurricane season yet?
23:41 rue_shop3 IS there a good way to store random bits of wire?
23:42 katsmeow-afk this storm is the southeastern flank of the first hurricane to hitusa this yr
23:42 rue_shop3 professor fansworth stored them in a drawr, but I question just how big the drawr was
23:42 katsmeow-afk yeas, in peanut butter jars or real butter tubs
23:42 rue_shop3 oh, the space is because I ejected a chair
23:43 rue_shop3 arg, I'm gonna need to spend another $!00 of shelving supplies
23:44 rue_shop3 er prolly $100
23:44 katsmeow-afk 1x4 lumber and 2" deck screws?
23:45 rue_shop3 and 1/4" plywood
23:45 rue_shop3 14 x 8' 2x4
23:45 katsmeow-afk 14 x 8' 2x4 for a shelf??
23:46 katsmeow-afk assemble the 1x4 on the plywood, then screw the plywood tot he wall, place peanut butter jars on it as neeed
23:47 katsmeow-afk or jelly jars, but they break
23:47 rue_mohr I do them freestanding
23:47 rue_mohr 2' x 8' shelvs
23:50 katsmeow-afk i bolt them to the walls, i'd hate to be under one when it falls
23:51 rue_mohr each 2x8 plywood sheet has a 2x4 frame around the edge, with 2 or 3 cross-supports under it
23:51 rue_mohr each shelf made of that is held at up by 2x4 verticles in the corners
23:52 rue_mohr there are 2x4 cripples between the shelvs
23:52 rue_mohr there are plywood triagles as req'd for rigidity
23:52 katsmeow-afk 2ft deep shelves?
23:52 rue_mohr yes
23:53 katsmeow-afk mine are usually 16" , so i get 3 per sheet
23:53 rue_mohr 2' is actually gonna be shallow to replace what I have
23:53 katsmeow-afk oh
23:54 rue_mohr things that done have a proper home in the shop: screwdrivers, wire, flat stock, pullies, paint...
23:54 katsmeow-afk then for *sure* i'd be bolting them to the wall studs
23:54 katsmeow-afk screwdrivers don't need 2ft deep shelves
23:54 rue_mohr finished robots....
23:54 rue_mohr no, that is a general list
23:54 rue_mohr I need to redo the mechanical workspace
23:54 katsmeow-afk and 2ft shelves, you can't see the gallon buckets in the back
23:54 rue_mohr the box os wire is taking over the shop *again*
23:55 rue_mohr the shelvs are a mix of...
23:55 rue_mohr meuseum,
23:55 rue_mohr finished projects,
23:55 katsmeow-afk mewseeums :-)
23:55 rue_mohr stock materials,
23:56 katsmeow-afk even reels of chips fit 16" shelves tho
23:56 rue_mohr ok stock materials is pretty generic and kinda cleans up the rest of whats there
23:56 tsmeow-afk
23:56 rue_mohr I have a lot of tubs of pcb's
23:57 rue_mohr hmm, I have boxes of "misc mechanical" things like angle brackets, and bearings assembles, that dont have a home
23:57 katsmeow-afk put them on ropes, hoist into the attic
23:57 rue_mohr .. shop has no attic...
23:58 katsmeow-afk oops
23:58 rue_mohr no I wanted to be able ot see clear over it form the back yard
23:58 rue_mohr I wanted the shop to be lower
23:58 katsmeow-afk it's ok, this house has no attic
23:59 katsmeow-afk course, i can stand a 16ft 2x4 on end and not hit the ceiling in places
23:59 rue_mohr I wanted the shop to have the roof height at the same level as the terrace behind it so I could use it as a deck
23:59 rue_mohr yes, if I could only do it again
23:59 katsmeow-afk cool, you going to bridge from the roof to the terrace?
23:59 rue_mohr a high cieling would be better than worse
23:59 rue_mohr the shop came out kinda high
