00:10 GuShH Curiosity Landing http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/multimedia/videos/movies/msl20120806/msl20120806-1280.mov
00:19 rrywolf curls up on spacekitteh for bedtime, since kat isn't ar
00:19 acekitteh tucks in and petpet
00:20 furrywolf mrrf :)
00:24 GuShH interesting, this gardening supply store answers their emails at 1:30AM
00:24 ShH is shocked every time a company answers within 30 minutes at crazy h
00:24 rue_house Triffid_Hunter, they want $25 for shipping for that head
00:24 rue_house funny that brings it to $100
00:24 rue_house Triffid_Hunter, if you could sell me a head, how much shipping to canada?
00:24 GuShH it speaks heaps of their service, unlike those stores that will ignore you in every possible way.
00:25 rue_house /parts/
00:30 GuShH does anyone know how is an insulated concrete floor built?, do you have a basic structure with insulating material and then you just pour the concrete on top?, any details?
00:34 rue_house yup ad595 is worth $10 from china, it goes up to about $30 ea from some other countries
00:34 rue_house first layer is trusses
00:34 rue_house then goes corrigated steel
00:35 rue_house then goes ridgid foam
00:35 rue_house then goes concrete
00:36 GuShH rue_house: I guess it's the insulating material that got me puzzled
00:37 GuShH the foam covers the entire surface or does it go between a grid of rigid structure?
00:37 GuShH I would imagine the latter
00:38 ShH would like insulated floor on the shop, when he gets around to buil
00:52 rue_house ridgid foam
00:52 rue_house sheets, same as they use in foundatoins
01:02 GuShH we have very different ways of doing things :/
01:02 GuShH I must get the green bullshit train going in my country... I could make a fortune!
01:02 GuShH people in most countries are basing their purchases on whether something is marketed as "green" or not these days.
01:03 GuShH they go from "does this outgas?" to "we ended up using cow shit and straw to cut down our emissions by not buying building materials that would've been transported to us in vehicles, by humans"
01:05 GuShH I only subscribe to energy efficiency and clever design, I refuse to pay more for something that costs less though.
01:20 rue_shop3 Triffid_Hunter! I worked out how to make the quartz insulated head!
01:25 rue_shop3 I can make it tommorow
09:43 anannie Hi is there anyone here?
09:59 theos nop
11:49 furrywolf sigh, still no kat? :(
18:16 GuShH stupid shops.
18:18 GuShH one would imagine a massive water pump shop would sell motor capacitors, you'd be wrong. one would also imagine a shop full of people that began to close down would let you in to buy a capacitor, you'd also be wrong. One would then think a big home improvement store would have a motor capacitor and worst case scenario, capacitors sold for power factor correction for fluorescent fixtures.... YOU'D ALSO BE FUCKING WRONG.
18:18 ShH smashes the
18:18 GuShH assholes. now it's 8PM and everything is closed.
18:20 GuShH If only it didn't take a month or two I'd order it online.
19:17 orlok Triffid_Hunter: So, can i give you a link to a thingivrese model and get it printed in translucent purple?
19:19 rue_house furrywolf, kat is here, just not in this channel and not under the nick kat, try msg'ing her last known nick
19:20 rue_house GuShH, need a temp cap in a hurry?
19:24 rue_house ping Triffid_Hunter
19:25 Tom_itx rue_house how do you delete a video from youtube?
19:26 rue_house select it and click remove
19:27 Tom_itx i don't see a place for that
19:30 rue_house took me a while to figure out my login
19:30 rue_house click on your name
19:30 Tom_itx ok i figured it out
19:30 rue_house click on "my channel'
19:30 Tom_itx thanks though
19:30 rue_house ugh
19:30 Tom_itx sry
19:31 Tom_itx they 'fixed' it and it looked really sucky
19:31 rue_house solder pot almost came to 19000 hits
19:31 Tom_itx i got my probe working
19:32 Tom_itx but i don't like the way the contacts are
19:32 rue_house I thought its been workign for a long time?
19:32 Tom_itx they need to be plated or something
19:32 Tom_itx i never used it
19:32 Tom_itx until today
19:32 rue_house heh
19:32 Tom_itx i'll show you in just a bit if the video turns out
19:33 rue_house I hav a quartz hot end to make
19:33 rue_house less my but is glued to the chair
19:33 Tom_itx it's almost ready...
19:35 Tom_itx http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGuV86Su430&feature=youtu.be
19:36 rue_house nice jog rate!
19:36 Tom_itx that's only 25 ipm
19:36 Tom_itx it will do 80
19:37 rue_house is there enough room for it to accelerate up to 80?
19:38 Tom_itx oh yeah
19:38 orlok what about 88?
19:38 rue_house whats the thread pitch?
19:38 Tom_itx it may do 88 but i limited it to 80
19:38 Tom_itx actually i think it went above 100 but at that rate it wasn't reliable
19:38 Tom_itx 20 tpi
19:39 Tom_itx the steppers are really hummin
19:39 GuShH rue_house: I thought about using two in series, the ones from CFLs
19:39 GuShH rue_house: that would fall in the category of "in a hurry"
19:39 rue_house two polarized caps back to back of twice the capacity
19:40 GuShH indeed
19:40 GuShH problem is the ones I have are 4.7uf so I'd need 4
19:40 GuShH how well do they handle the current?
19:40 rue_house http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CEqokrtFI4&feature=plcp << how big is that bit and how fast is it spinning?
19:41 GuShH went to check my microwave oven caps, they're 1uF... I really checked every cap I have.
19:41 GuShH tomorrow I'll go earlier to the stores...
19:41 rue_house Tom_itx, ^^
19:41 GuShH at 6PM they're closed already
19:42 GuShH didn't want to argue with the pump guy but god dammit if you are selling those things you ought to sell the caps as well
19:42 GuShH just like places selling motorcycles also sell the oil.
19:42 GuShH and these are common, how come no one has them
19:43 Tom_itx rue . 030
19:43 Tom_itx i think
19:43 rue_house #57ish?
19:44 Tom_itx 1/32"
19:44 Tom_itx or #68 approx
19:44 rue_house ah
19:44 Tom_itx small
19:44 Tom_itx probably 2500 rpm
19:44 rue_house yea, carbide, right?
19:44 Tom_itx yes
19:44 rue_house hmm
19:45 rue_house if your feed is too low will it bind up and break?
19:45 Tom_itx umm probably so
19:45 Tom_itx i had problems until i switched to carbide on those
19:46 Tom_itx i think they are sharper maybe
19:46 Tom_itx i've probably cut a couple hundred boxes with the same cutter
19:47 rue_house :) sales are good then
19:47 Tom_itx not right now
19:47 rue_house I just want to sleep
19:49 Tom_itx you'll get behind if you do
19:49 ShH hands rue_house _the_
19:49 rue_house ... its green, your supposed to hand me a red and blue one
19:49 GuShH these have a lower carbon footprint
19:56 e_shop2 puts a match up to the pill to see if its carbon content really is l
19:56 rue_shop2 Triffid_Hunter, hello
19:57 lok gig
19:57 orlok unicorns!
20:58 rue_shop4 kat, please step out from behind the curtin :/
21:00 Tom_itx rue_shop4 did you figure out how you're gonna do your tip or did you buy one?
21:01 GuShH iron courtain?
21:01 GuShH why the hell is ltspice's updater so crappy!
21:02 rue_shop4 $100 for a tip
21:02 rue_shop4 just oo much for me
21:02 rue_shop4 besides, I thought the threaded channel had a plastic liner, but from what I can tell, it dosn't
21:02 rue_shop4 meaning I can do this another way
21:03 GuShH http://machetera.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/whine.jpg
21:03 furrywolf check your local motor repair shop. also check industrial electric suppliers. neon sign shops and furnace repair shops might have a few too.
21:03 rue_shop4 ?
21:04 GuShH furrywolf: I remember seeing a motor rewinding store, but I couldn't find it today.
21:04 GuShH store/shop
21:04 GuShH why is it so difficult to get anything done here!
21:08 rue_shop4 can FR4 take continious 200c heat?
21:09 furrywolf the local motor repair shop is nice... I needed some parts for a motor, and when I brought it in to show them what I needed, they said that if I bought them a six-pack, they'd re-dip and bake the windings for me too.
21:09 GuShH rue_shop4: it will eventually fall apart
21:09 ShH could use a beer or
21:11 rue_shop4 hmm what should I use...
21:14 rue_shop4 what dosn't conduct heat well and I can make a washer out of?
21:14 rue_shop4 but is sturdy
21:15 furrywolf how non-well? glass?
21:15 rue_shop4 a) I dont have thermally stable glass sheet
21:15 rue_shop4 b) I dont have a glass drill
21:16 GuShH ptfe?
21:17 furrywolf what about fiber gasket material?
21:18 GuShH perhaps ceramic
21:18 rue_shop4 dont have any peices large enough to make a finger washer from
21:18 GuShH this furnace I'm working on uses ceramic tubes to allocate the electrodes and the high voltage wires
21:19 GuShH serves both as heat and electrical insulator
21:19 GuShH mostly electrical in this case, since you wouldn't want it to spark to the outer casing
21:19 ShH noticed this used to be a diesel burner and was converted to natural
21:19 GuShH I even found the nozzle on a shelf
21:20 GuShH 1.5mm 30°
21:20 GuShH It's got a cute stainless steel filter
21:23 GuShH too bad they removed the injector and the pump + inline filter, I could've used any waste oil in case I didn't want to use gas...
21:24 orlok rue_shop4: glass.. cast, not machined?
21:25 orlok rue_shop4: got blowtorch?
21:25 GuShH he does
21:26 GuShH why is the jameco site so slow?
21:26 GuShH or is it just me
21:28 GuShH rue_shop4: won't the high esr of these cfl caps turn them into tiny rockets?
21:28 rue_shop4 cfl?
21:29 GuShH 400V 4.7uF electrolytics
21:29 rue_shop4 how many VA are you dissipating?
21:29 orlok rue_shop4: the main issue with working glass with heat is the cooling.. you want to keep it insulated so it can cool slow
21:29 GuShH actually the voltage rating is lowish, based on rms 220
21:50 rue_shop4 thunderstorm, power has flickered 3 times now
21:51 m_itx snickers and quits playing with rue_shop4's light sw
22:00 GuShH rue_shop4: it's probably the same storm we just got rid of
22:09 rue_house lighting is too close, shutting this macine off
22:09 rue_house ffffffffffffffffffffffffff
22:10 GuShH o.o
22:10 GuShH I cussed at that same cloud that happens to be pissing at you right now, how awesome is that?
22:28 rue_shop3 hmmm
22:32 lok gets a resp
22:32 orlok unicorns! yay!
22:34 furrywolf I picked up a MIG welder for $50 today... snap-on YA217. seems like your generic 120V welder.
22:35 furrywolf half the parts in it are identical to my century welder. I suspect they're made by the same people.
22:36 furrywolf going to give it a complete once-over before powering it up... got it cheap because "it was left outside all winter". looks in good condition so far...
22:53 GuShH furrywolf: does it have hv start?
22:54 GuShH I mean, does it work >_<
22:55 GuShH just tested the motor with the derated cap, it takes a very long time to spool up which explains why the controller wasn't turning the solenoids on. also in the process of taking it apart, theres a lot of build-up on the turbine and that also contributes with the slower spin-up and less efficiency pushing air overall, looks like it needs a paint job too.
22:55 GuShH bearings feel ok but they need grease.
22:56 GuShH it's all packed with dust.
22:56 GuShH furrywolf: heh I think you'll spend more in consumables to get the mig going, unless you already have it all :p
22:57 furrywolf ... it uses a car windshield wiper motor to drive the wire. LOL
22:58 GuShH you could see it as either a good or bad thing.
22:58 furrywolf also, this one is utterly brain-dead... the wire feed is a rheostat and a car windshield wiper motor, while the power control is just a multi-tap switch. the only silicon in it is the pair of rectifier diodes.
22:59 furrywolf my other one has proper electronic controls.
23:00 GuShH hey, 50 bucks...
23:00 GuShH so you can't do alu with it, most likely.
23:00 GuShH - at least not properly -
23:01 furrywolf you can do alu half-assed with most mig welders if you replace the metal wire liner with a plastic one.
23:01 GuShH Hmm, I hope this nut will come loose so I can remove that tiny turbine
23:01 furrywolf of course, since this one is so utterly brain-lacking, I don't mind at all trying it on my modified sine inverter, which I've never wanted to do with my good one.
23:01 ShH hates
23:02 furrywolf the only thing that can go wrong is the transformer, and it presumably has a thermal switch.
23:02 GuShH this was all caused by the dust in the air grinding the paint off and then the humidity in the air rusting the blades.
23:02 GuShH furrywolf: what does it use for the high voltage strike?
23:03 furrywolf it doesn't. it's MIG, not TIG.
23:03 furrywolf http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Snap-On-Mig-Welder-Wire-Drive-Feed-Motor-860-581-100-216-079-666-Parts-/00/$%28KGrHqEOKnIE1MZNh!0uBNhiy0qJUQ~~_3.JPG tell me that's not a windshield wiper motor. lol
23:03 GuShH I want an add-on box for my buzz box, but I'm not sure if a couple caps are enough to stop the HV from feeding through, and also not sure if the insulation on the transformer can handle it
23:03 GuShH furrywolf: oh, could've been a combination box like most of the new ones
23:04 furrywolf no. it's a brain-damaged box containing a switch, a rheostat, a windshield wiper motor, and a transformer.
23:04 GuShH that'd be a wiper motor with it's reduction gearbox, indeed.
23:04 GuShH at least you can easily source and replace them
23:05 furrywolf my Miller has a much, much, much nicer motor and gearbox in it.
23:05 GuShH isn't snap-on a really good brand? at least that's how we see it over here.
23:06 GuShH maybe it was a low end model
23:06 GuShH or perhaps it was common in it's day
23:06 furrywolf snap-on welders are re-branded Century. it's mid-grade.
23:06 GuShH no rust inside?
23:07 furrywolf while Miller is top-end.
23:07 furrywolf no rust inside
23:07 furrywolf it looks like shit on the outside, but inside is nice and clean.
23:07 GuShH not even the transformer?
23:07 GuShH heh
23:07 furrywolf transformer is nice and clean, and the windings don't look obviously melted.
23:07 GuShH neat
23:07 GuShH all copper?
23:08 furrywolf yes
23:08 furrywolf can't find a picture of my miller one online, and it's in storage so I can't take one.
23:09 ShH throws a bit of lightning at rue_h
23:09 rue_house no no
23:09 ShH throws some
23:10 GuShH humidity is about 90%... I can't paint anything today
23:10 GuShH it's also too cold.
23:10 GuShH :(
23:11 rue_house I finished my quartz insulated print head
23:12 GuShH rue_house: I think this tiny motor is 1/6HP or 1/8HP (forgot)
23:12 rue_house freaking lighting comes back when I start the computer back up
23:12 rue_house wtf
23:12 GuShH ~3000RPM
23:15 furrywolf the miller one I have uses a quality motor, all metal gears, solid housing, etc... this one uses a windshield wiper motor. guess which I expect to last longer? heh
23:15 furrywolf of course, the miller one will feed wire up to an eighth inch thick or something ridiculous, while this tops out at .030...
23:16 theBear what's that in real measurements ?
23:16 theBear meh, i ask the calcubot
23:16 theBear those are decimal inches right ?
23:17 furrywolf yes
23:17 furrywolf the short version is that the miller will feed wire four times thicker than this one will.
23:17 furrywolf which you need, because it's rated at 500A, not 70A like this one. :)
23:19 rue_house todays package is a BATTERY HOLDER!
23:19 rue_house 12V of AA
23:19 theBear mmm, that is pretty small
23:22 orlok Hmm.
23:22 orlok infill patterns?
23:23 rue_house nope
23:23 rue_house its moulded
23:23 orlok heh
23:23 orlok i got a reply back from triffids company
23:23 orlok $10 for a unicorn
23:23 orlok :)
23:28 rue_house rainbow horn or natural perl
23:28 rue_house more lightnign strikes, taking it down again
23:28 theBear hornless
23:29 rue_house that a mule not a unicorn
23:32 theBear it's a hornless unicorn, dammit !
23:34 GuShH a unicorn after an accident
23:34 GuShH or a personal choice.
23:34 ShH can't get the turbine off the friggin motor shaft, its rusted
23:34 GuShH heated it but it won't budge.
23:35 GuShH time for chemicals?
23:35 furrywolf does it need to come off? how is it attached? press fit, or just happens to be stuck?
23:35 GuShH it slides onto the notched shaft and then you secure it with a bolt, which I removed.
23:35 GuShH it's binded by the rust I guess.
23:35 orlok cold then heat?
23:36 GuShH I need to take it out to clean and paint properly, so I can also access the other bearing and clean / grease it up too
23:36 furrywolf is it a ball bearing or a bronze bushing?
23:36 GuShH can't tell at the moment
23:37 GuShH it may have a bushing on one side and a bearing on the other
23:37 furrywolf if bushing, just oil it from the outside
23:37 furrywolf they neither need nor like grease unless they're already shot
23:39 GuShH I don't think it was pressed on because of the way it's secured, I've seen similar ones before and they would just slide right in
23:39 orlok thats what she said
23:40 furrywolf what material is the turbine?
23:41 furrywolf if it's all steel, heat it more... or support it well from the back, and using a punch the same size as the shaft, try hammering the shaft through it.
23:44 furrywolf make sure the punch is the exact size of the shaft... any smaller will mushroom the shaft and make the problem worse.
23:50 GuShH furrywolf: that's what I was trying to do, after the second heat cycle it started to move, but I don't want to hit it too hard.
23:51 GuShH it's just steel.
23:52 GuShH theres so much crap built up on this thing I'm surprised it still works.
23:53 GuShH reduced air intake makes for different combustion and forces you to do all sorts of dancing to get it right again...
