00:50 rue_bed the fan in my computers power supply just went tits up
00:50 rue_bed well a bit ago anyhow
02:56 GuShH rue_bed: how is that a problem?
04:18 theBear his feet are getting cold now
04:18 theBear that's how
04:18 theBear brown cow
04:31 ShH slaps the
04:32 Tom_itx careful messin with a sleepin bear
12:31 Tom_itx http://www2.electronicproducts.com/Check_out_the_VoloCopter_A_helicopter_with_18_rotors-article-fajb_volocopter_jul2012-html.aspx
12:44 JasonX cool
12:44 JasonX so this is a robotics chatbox
12:45 JasonX are you guys all mechanical engineers?
13:41 furrywolf grrrr, no buffer again.
13:42 furrywolf did I miss anything?
13:54 furrywolf [*status(znc@znc.com)] The buffer for [#robotics] is empty
13:54 furrywolf fucking worthless piece of shit software
13:54 furrywolf how is a simple concept like not randomly losing buffers hard?
13:54 theBear works for me, but nah, nothing missed
13:56 furrywolf well, I'm now two amps poorer and $250 richer... sold my marantz 4240 and my 2238b.
13:58 genesis for a digital amplifier ?
13:58 furrywolf ?
13:58 genesis you sold your old , i imagine you bought a new :)
13:59 furrywolf no
13:59 furrywolf I need money, not stuff.
14:00 furrywolf probably put it towards batteries for my solar system...
14:02 furrywolf also, what the heck is a "digital amplifier"? you think I'd buy class D garbage?
14:06 furrywolf I could have gotten $400 for them on ebay, if I cleaned them up, relamped them, etc, but... I don't have time for more projects.
14:08 furrywolf I'll probably go take a look at the ni-fe batteries next weekend... they look in pretty sad shape from the photos.
14:21 furrywolf they're a long drive away... about two hours. the first hour is freeway, then the second hour is 15 miles from the freeway.
14:38 any234563452 [14:24] <any234563452> on from webchat.freenode.com at library
14:39 any234563452 house hit by lighting yesterday
14:39 any234563452 took out modem, router, Tiggr
14:39 any234563452 came in on dsl line, which the telco refuses to allow me to protect
14:39 any234563452 the 120/240v powerlines well protected, plus the puters were on surge protectors and ups, everything else in house is fine
14:39 any234563452 telco has made no move to re-establish internet tot he house
14:40 any234563452 metered time is running out here, gotta go
14:41 furrywolf ugh
15:26 furrywolf Boat: a hole in the water you try to fill up with money
15:26 furrywolf lol
15:51 furrywolf bbl
18:04 solifugus has anyone tried using a usb to db25 connector to get i/o lines for electronics?
18:04 solifugus from an android phone?
18:05 orlok USB to DB25?
18:06 orlok serial or lpt?
18:35 MrBIOS- orlok, presumably the latter, given the parallel I/Os provided
18:35 MrBIOS- also, I'm not sure I've ever seen an actual USB to Serial DB25 adapter in the wild
18:36 MrBIOS- (that didn't have a DB9-DB25 dongle on it)
18:51 rue_shop TODAY i GOT 3 PACKAGES IN THE MAIL!
19:07 rue_shop ok I sent in the warranty claim for my power supply
19:08 rue_shop today I bought, I think, all the threaded rod I need for the reprap
19:08 Tom_itx i bet that was more than a dollar
19:10 rue_shop YAYA! ITS a 18mm spade bit
19:10 rue_shop thats for drilling holes in not-metal that is a tight fit for 1/2" EMT
19:11 rue_shop (that was about $9)
19:11 rue_shop I have two $1 packages
19:11 rue_shop should I open one, or both of them?
19:11 rue_shop I'll save one for tommorow
19:12 rue_shop SWEET! its a 1W LED!
19:14 Tom_itx yeah you should save one because you won't get any tomorrow
19:19 rue_shop hahaha I burnt it out, forgot to switch the meter to current display
19:19 rue_shop have to get another one of those and try again
19:19 rue_shop maybe next time I'll get blue
19:20 Tom_itx there's a dollar down the toilet
19:21 Tom_itx maybe you _should_ open the other one
19:24 rue_shop for todays item I bought a green one
19:24 rue_shop :)
19:24 rue_shop it was fun, I wont screw up next time
19:25 rue_shop it was really bright
19:25 Tom_itx for a second
19:31 rue_shop a few, I was dialing up current and the meter wasn't changing, so I kept going instead of thinking about why
19:32 rue_shop I got th threaded rod for the reprap, they had M8-1 in stock, which is amazing
19:32 rue_shop I'm using 5-16" for the frame, M8-1 for the z axis
19:33 rue_shop I was tinking about it, the z axis and the extruder do not need microstepping
19:33 rue_shop so I really only need to microstep 2 drives
19:34 Tom_itx i bet it's better if it is
19:34 rue_shop na
19:34 rue_shop it looks like the machine that made this had a .5mm head
19:34 Tom_itx i know that you would never consider these drivers but i really wish you could see them
19:34 rue_shop .5mm on M8-1 is 100 full steps
19:34 Tom_itx i'm pretty impressed
19:34 rue_shop the gecko ones?
19:35 rue_shop I'v used them
19:35 Tom_itx yes
19:35 Tom_itx on what?
19:35 rue_shop stepper interface dc servo drivers
19:35 Tom_itx the 203v?
19:35 rue_shop a guy was making a machine, I WAS HELPING
19:35 Tom_itx oh
19:35 rue_shop SORRY, SHIFT IS STICKING
19:35 rue_shop and in the process I'm pressing caps to unstick it
19:36 Tom_itx well i'm working on.. umm..5 pc's at once here
19:36 rue_shop cool
19:36 Tom_itx installs on 2
19:36 rue_shop what ya making?
19:36 Tom_itx cad cam on one
19:36 Tom_itx and linuxcnc on the other
19:36 Tom_itx a mount for my spindle encoder
19:36 e_shop
19:37 Tom_itx nothing fancy
19:37 rue_shop being able to print plastic bits would be great
19:38 Tom_itx yeah i'm sorta getting interested
19:38 Tom_itx i'm used to machining though
19:39 rue_shop I have TONNES of the ground rod thats needed for the reprap
19:39 Tom_itx 16mm?
19:39 rue_shop the skate board bearing that came in were pwerfect timing
19:40 rue_shop its uh
19:40 Tom_itx how good do the parts for it look?
19:40 rue_shop 8mm
19:40 rue_shop their ok
19:41 rue_shop they look like pressed fishingline, but they are quite solid
19:42 Tom_itx rough finish?
19:46 rue_shop a bit, I have currently lost my camera
19:46 rue_shop and my main machine is down
20:15 rue_shop3 ok I cleaned about 2 lbs of dust out of this machine and found some ram that it would accept as a minor upgrade
20:15 rue_shop3 it would be good for me to find the camera
21:01 rue_shop hahaha
21:01 rue_shop I upgraded X to try to fix things,
21:01 rue_shop the nvidia driver dosn't work with the new X
21:01 rue_shop the new nvidia driver has to compile a kernel module
21:02 rue_shop but I upgraded the compiler, so it cant because the module has to be compiled with the same version of the compiler
21:02 rue_shop there is an error trying to recompile the kernel with the new compiler because the kernel header files are out of date
21:02 furrywolf nvidia's driver is utter shit.
21:02 rue_shop heh
21:02 rue_shop yes
21:02 rue_shop but it works
21:03 furrywolf you must like random crashes and other problems.
21:03 rue_shop not had those ones
21:03 rue_shop I cant get the nv driver to work at all :(
21:03 furrywolf amazing. go search their forums, and you can find thousand-post-long threads on the various ways it hangs.
21:03 rue_shop I'm using multihead, and I think the nv driver (at the time) couldn't make the palletes match
21:03 rue_shop mines been ok recently
21:04 rue_shop I did have problems with it leaking memory with my raid array
21:04 rue_shop once upon a time
21:04 rue_shop thats gone away
21:04 rue_shop well, even without X my system will operate as an alarm clock for me
21:05 furrywolf I had an nvidia card, and got sick of the crap driver. I had an ati card, and got sick of the crap hardware. Then I got a Matrox. Life is good.
21:05 rue_shop noted!
21:05 furrywolf of course, I should add I don't do any 3d graphics.
21:10 rue_mohr ugh
21:10 rue_mohr I'm using kernel 2.6.38, debian only goes to 2.6.32
21:11 Tom_itx how does memory leak?
21:11 Tom_itx can you plug it?
21:14 rue_mohr I'v not had a leak in a long long time
21:15 rue_mohr my last leak was firefox, I upgraded it, fixed.
21:15 Tom_itx ok that part of the mount fits
21:15 furrywolf "The new IDENTIFY-MSG and IDENTIFY-CTCP capabilities of the new Dancer IRCd used at freenode causes the first character of a message or notice to be set to a plus sign (+) if the user is identified with NickServ and a minus sign (-) if not. " hate... freenode... "features"... sooo... much....
21:18 rue_mohr heh, it looks like the new gcc wont compile the old kernel
21:18 rue_mohr I'd love to shoot the gcc developers sometimes, they make these damned changes that make all the old stuff not compile
21:18 furrywolf I haven't had that problem.
21:19 furrywolf bbl, going to take apart the carb on my truck, and clean the needle valve.
21:19 rue_mohr 2.6.38.8 is not compileable under gcc 4.7
21:29 Tom_itx i need a data sheet for EE-SX315
21:29 Tom_itx omron
21:31 Tom_itx i could assume red and black are +5 and gnd but i don't wanna screw it up cause i only got one
21:40 rue_mohr hold on tom
21:41 rue_mohr whats the encoder out of?
21:41 Tom_itx old printer
21:41 Tom_itx it was on the stepper
21:42 Tom_itx http://tom-itx.dyndns.org:81/~webpage/motors/stepper6.jpg
21:42 Tom_itx that one
21:42 Tom_itx it looks like one side is a transistor and the other a diode
21:42 rue_mohr I'm on a freaking text terminal....
21:42 Tom_itx 3 pins on one side 2 on the other
21:43 Tom_itx i got white red black and blue coming off the board
21:43 Tom_itx but i dunno if the power was thru an off board resistor or not
21:44 furrywolf looks like an o-ring self-destructed and got rubber bits in everything, as well as not sealing what it was supposed to seal.
21:47 rue_mohr well 2.6.39.4 is broken, same error
21:48 rue_mohr syscall_trace_leave type conflict between pthread.h and pthread.c
21:48 Tom_itx i give up for tonight. i'm tired anyway
21:51 rue_mohr arg
21:52 rue_mohr gcc 4.7 debian kernel problem compile
21:56 furrywolf blah... I always figured the 8mpg tops I got with my truck was a problem... but nope. the manual says that's what it gets.
21:56 furrywolf it says it has a range of 225 miles on the 28 gallon tank.
21:56 furrywolf which is 8.03mpg... and exactly what I get.
21:56 rue_shop3 block off a few cylinders
21:57 furrywolf so I can go 25 instead of 50?
21:57 rue_shop3 how heavy is the truck?
21:57 rue_shop3 if its big enough youcould have a small nuclear reactor on the back and run it on electric
21:57 rue_shop3 or run it directly off the steam
21:58 rue_shop3 nothing like 3.4million km per kg
21:58 rue_shop3 ;)
21:58 GuShH rue_shop3: you should get this channel renamed to #insanity
21:58 rue_shop3 hehe
21:59 rue_shop3 you didn't notice the topic?
22:07 furrywolf bbl, off to auto parts store, hoping they either have a rebuild kit, or at least a new seal.
22:08 GuShH furrywolf: at these hours?
22:08 ace4016 some walmarts are open 24 hours a day...maybe he's going there for car parts :P
22:09 ace4016 or he's on the west coast and it's before 9PM, which some places stay open until
22:10 Tom_itx or he's just lying and went to pee
22:12 furrywolf time zones: just because it's dark where you are doesn't mean it is where someone else is.
22:12 furrywolf bbl.
22:12 GuShH furrywolf: I know what time it is over there, and the shops would be closed here at least, at that time.
22:13 GuShH ace4016: really? the only walmarts here close very early...
22:13 GuShH most if not all shops close way too early specially during winter
22:13 GuShH we're talking 6PM for most shops and big chains at 9PM
22:13 rue_shop Triffid_Hunter, any major bias between 3mm and 1.75mm plastic filament?
22:13 GuShH which is ridiculous
22:13 ace4016 they have walmart in brazil?
22:13 GuShH someone gets off of work and needs to buy something, tell me how can they do it?
22:13 GuShH brazil? fuck you.
22:13 ace4016 actually...you're not in brazil...
22:14 GuShH I don't even speak portuguese, I can understand it but that's beyond the point.
22:14 ShH turns
22:14 GuShH It's almost as bad as calling me a mexican, just so you know.
22:14 ace4016 lol, apologizes :P
22:15 GuShH we are enemies now. get your big sombrero and your rusty revolver, we're fixing this.
22:15 ace4016 i forgot where you're from...i remember something south american, and for some reason portuguese comes to mind
22:15 GuShH either one could die from tetanus or lead poisoning. the rules are simple: apply wd40 to the revolver and hope it works.
22:16 GuShH ace4016: Argentina. But yes, for some reason shops like to close early.
22:16 GuShH There's one particular store here that likes to close at 5PM during winter...
22:17 GuShH we don't even have the kind of winter you guys have to begin with
22:17 GuShH It's not like the streets are packed with ice and snow, there is no snow.
22:17 GuShH So what's the reasoning behind it?
22:17 ace4016 laziness
22:18 GuShH Probably. But they like to complain about not having enough work.
22:18 GuShH Well jeez, perhaps you should stay open for longer.
22:18 ace4016 hehe
22:18 GuShH Also if they close at 6 and you arrive at 5:50, chances are it's been closed for 15 minutes already.
22:19 ace4016 sounds like stores here
22:20 GuShH They figure it's not worth waiting 20 more minutes just to sell a couple small things, that's what they think.
22:20 ace4016 where closing at time X really means "we close at X-00:15 or X-00:30"
22:20 GuShH Best part is, when you do make it to the store... they don't seem to carry what you need.
22:20 GuShH Raises the question "why do you even have this store???"
22:21 GuShH I'm willing to bet most stores I've been to the last couple days were all drug fronts.
22:21 ace4016 i personally hate going to brick and mortar stores unless it's something i need/want to try out first...which most brick and mortar won't allow you to do, so they're just as good as ordering online
22:21 ace4016 also, the staff knows nothing of the products they sell, so they're usually useless for educational purposes...so internet, once again, wins
22:22 ace4016 cheaper online too
22:22 ace4016 lots of free shipping as well, or the shipping + cost is still cheaper than spending the gas + buying at brick and mortar...
22:22 ace4016 businesses will fail terribly if they don't shapen up
22:23 GuShH true
22:23 GuShH you can at least "play" with the products on big stores, but the employees are clueless anyway.
22:24 GuShH For purchases over 100 bucks I like to test things out first, that's just me. Checking out the build quality, accessories, available spare parts...
22:25 GuShH If I can do that on a store, vs reading some random reviews online... I'd choose the former.
22:25 GuShH ace4016: Most stores I buy from have a real front plus they deal with online sales as well.
22:26 ace4016 yea; usually when i buy stuff, if it's pricey and i can play with it, i'll go to the store first, but a lot of times there aren't any stores around with the product
22:27 Tom_itx mmm 106f today
22:27 ace4016 or the brick and mortar have so few options out it's not worth it
22:27 GuShH right now I'm on the hunt for a small air compressor, already went to a big chain to fiddle with their products...
22:27 Tom_itx 110 to 115f tomorrow expected
22:27 GuShH they were all the same quality and build, I suspect they all came from the same factory in china.
22:27 ace4016 also, clothes...hard to get online as sizing is not universal :P
22:28 GuShH heh
22:28 GuShH yeah different brands seem to have a different standard on sizing
22:28 GuShH it also varies with the fabric
22:28 GuShH or rather the "fit"
22:28 ace4016 besides, chicks are at clothing stores; perfect place to flirt :D
22:28 Tom_itx alot of ours will have 2 or 3 sizes marked on them
22:28 GuShH I find they are more like drones than chicks over here
22:29 ace4016 typically not looking for someone to talk to if i'm going to a clothing store to pick up a chick :P
22:29 ace4016 "shhh...don't talk. it ruins your good looks"
22:29 GuShH o.O
22:30 GuShH that could be seen as "don't talk, your teeth are crooked"
22:30 GuShH >_<
22:30 ShH still hasn't got his chipped tooth sorted out, it's a remainder of why bar fights s
22:31 GuShH worst part is... I was just standing there with a drink when I got sucker punched.
22:33 ace4016 GuShH, if that was the case i'd say "Don't smile, it ruins your good looks"
22:33 GuShH http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ng6DGwiKWag << how is the alu foil a fair comparison? it's got a massive surface area.
22:35 GuShH give a chemist some gold and... he'll try to destroy it!
22:36 ShH fails to see the educational value of these vi
22:40 ace4016 to show how chemically resistant gold is i guess...
22:40 ace4016 only to acids because bases don't exist apparently
22:40 ace4016 actually...bleach might be a base...
22:40 ace4016 but that's besides the point!
22:41 GuShH to make it on youtube you have to a) hide your voice b) destroy random things
22:43 ace4016 science shows are rarely useful, educationally :P
22:44 ace4016 i guess they just show the concept so that you at least sort of know what's going on
22:45 ace4016 also maybe encourages kids to become more interested in science and math...until they get to uni and realize it's either nothing like that or rarely get to do "the fun stuff"
22:50 ace4016 time to wander off to bed...
23:14 Triffid_Hunter rue_shop: 3mm works for me. 1.75 is good when you want really fine detail, like 50 micron thick layers or lower. fwiw I can print beautifully at 50 microns with my 3mm filament, but below that I don't have enough control over the flow of plastic.
23:15 Triffid_Hunter rue_shop: 3mm is less likely to buckle within the extruder
23:20 GuShH for a moment I thought you were talking about paint guns
23:20 GuShH Triffid_Hunter: which begs the question, can paint gun nozzles be used for extruder heads?
23:20 GuShH they're often brass
23:20 GuShH with a standard thread
23:21 GuShH ...awesome... our local NIC is down.
23:26 rue_shop Triffid_Hunter, ok, I'll go 3mm
23:26 rue_shop going with pla for now
23:28 rue_shop Triffid_Hunter, how many steps per layer on your z axis?
23:28 rue_shop I'm guessing 1600?
23:35 furrywolf bah, couldn't get new parts.
23:35 furrywolf out of stock, no price, call distributor to check availability, etc.
23:37 Triffid_Hunter rue_shop: 3200 steps per mm, I got M6 thread (1mm pitch) , 200 steps/rev and 16x microstep
23:37 rue_shop yes, so you use 3200 steps up per layer?
23:38 rue_shop no 1600?
23:39 rue_shop 50 micron
23:39 rue_shop .05mm
23:40 rue_shop 160 steps
23:40 rue_shop so, 10 full steps
23:40 furrywolf bah. trying to figure out why the adjustment picture for the float level made no sense... the picture is upside down.
23:40 furrywolf lol
23:40 rue_shop and I still dont know why that axis is microstepped....
23:40 rue_shop furrywolf, :)
23:41 rue_shop I might recheck my math
23:41 Triffid_Hunter rue_shop: noise. Z is really damn loud without microstep
23:41 rue_shop over 10 steps every, like.... 2 to 5 mins?
23:42 Triffid_Hunter rue_shop: it does long travel at start and end of the print
23:42 Triffid_Hunter rue_shop: and it sounded like I was cutting my table in half with a jigsaw
23:42 rue_shop mmm I must not try to change everything at once
23:43 rue_shop ok how about the extruder?
23:43 rue_shop is there any point in that being microstepped?
23:43 rue_shop surely their cant be, I'm using a geared extruder
23:44 Triffid_Hunter rue_shop: yes we microstep that too, it requires extremely fine precision
23:44 rue_shop how fine...
23:44 rue_shop :)
23:44 rue_shop 1/200 of a rev divided by
23:44 Triffid_Hunter rue_shop: at 50 micron layers, a single line across the entire diagonal of the bed will consume 1mm of filament
23:45 rue_shop 11:39
23:46 rue_shop the parts I got are printed with a .5mm head... from what I can tell
23:46 rue_shop in layers...
23:46 Triffid_Hunter so with 16x microstep, we usually see 500-700 steps per mm with a geared gregstruder, the makergear 14:1 gearhead steppers gave 1380 but they're using 5:1 now which of course gives a lower number
23:46 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: apart from layer height < 0.8 * nozzle diameter, and extrusion width >= nozzle diameter (both user-settable parameters), the nozzle diameter is only used when bridging
23:47 Triffid_Hunter bbl
23:47 rue_shop 33 layers in 9.87mm
23:48 rue_shop .3" layers on the parts I got
23:48 rue_shop hmm
23:49 rue_shop hah, and its all gonna boil down to how deep the bolt is knurrled
23:49 rue_shop oh my
23:50 rue_shop so the gearing I have is about 3.5:1
23:50 rue_shop I need to go make supper
23:59 rue_mohr hmm
23:59 ShH offers rue_mohr an o
