00:05 katsmeow-afk BRING A SMILE TO YOUR FACE WHEN PUSHED DOWN THE STAIRS
00:06 furrywolf lol
00:08 theBear hehe
00:11 rrywolf curls up on katsmeow-afk for bed
00:17 rrywolf noses katsmeow-
00:21 katsmeow-afk yipes
00:22 katsmeow-afk i checked the water pool-tank , the lil pump put 500gallons in it today, i shut it off so it wouldn't overflow tonite, it'll top off the level tomorrow for sure
00:22 katsmeow-afk not bad for a "dry" creek
00:22 orlok http://boingboing.net/2012/07/10/10-robot-challenge.html
00:22 orlok SOunds like a job for rue!
00:23 orlok http://www.robotics-africa.org/design_challenge.html
00:25 katsmeow-afk i dunno if rue can do it either,, where we might use jar lids off peanutbutter, they may never see jars of peanut butter their whole life there
00:25 rue_mohr haha he says servos
00:25 rue_mohr servos are $8 ea
00:25 rue_mohr hahaha
00:26 rrywolf curls back up on katsmeow-afk for bed
00:26 katsmeow-afk we may scrap a $50 printer for parts due to a small failure, they may spend weeks transplanting parts till the printer works again
00:26 tsmeow-afk nibbles dead fish while petting the furry with another
00:27 orlok katsmeow-afk: you have seen the gods must be crazy?
00:27 katsmeow-afk luved it
00:27 orlok also, have you seen the african arc welders?
00:27 katsmeow-afk got GMBC 1 on vhs, 2 on dvd
00:27 katsmeow-afk no
00:27 rue_mohr most of my robots are under $10, but I re-use parts
00:28 rue_mohr hmm
00:28 orlok http://dangerousminds.net/comments/africa_rising_grassroots-tech_and_the_homemade_robot_of_togo/
00:29 orlok http://boingboing.net/2007/06/07/diy-gadgets-in-afric.html
00:29 furrywolf heh, I found pics of one even worse a while ago.
00:29 furrywolf http://fw.bushytails.net/welder1.jpg http://fw.bushytails.net/welder2.jpg http://fw.bushytails.net/welder3.jpg
00:29 katsmeow-afk i know they just close their eyes when welding
00:30 rue_mohr $10 is easy to hit when your scrounging parts
00:30 orlok i just started taking lunch to work
00:30 katsmeow-afk damn
00:30 rue_mohr good to see their using gloves
00:30 orlok i was spending $20 a day on food and coffee
00:31 orlok :-\
00:32 furrywolf you were spending half my daily income on food.
00:34 rue_mohr it says the robot must be programmable, but they dont say it has to be microcontroller programmed
00:34 rue_mohr CAM programming anyone?
00:34 e_mohr adjusts a lobe by a few deg
00:34 orlok furrywolf: thats just lunch, too.
00:35 e_mohr th
00:35 furrywolf bah
00:35 furrywolf bbl
00:35 rue_mohr cant do an arm, needs too much gear reduction
00:35 rue_mohr low parts count, simple parts
00:36 rue_mohr this would be the somethingbot
00:36 rue_mohr katsmeow-afk,
00:36 katsmeow-afk i think i can just put a pressure switch on the ro water tank, and control a selenoid water valve on the input to the ro filter
00:36 rue_mohr do you think you could implement 'programmable' with a single 4017?
00:37 katsmeow-afk now that i have all the water plumbing fittings EPOXIED to the tank
00:37 rue_mohr could use a 27256
00:38 katsmeow-afk how will you adderess all of a 27256 with 4 addy lines?
00:38 rue_mohr `I can redefine a few things to make this work
00:39 orlok got a trivial electronics question
00:39 rue_mohr 4?
00:39 katsmeow-afk it's after midnite, my brains are off
00:39 katsmeow-afk 10?
00:39 orlok my fuel guage has resistor in it, and the fuel sendor is essentially a potentiometer based on a float
00:40 orlok the resistor in the guage itself is known as a shunt resistor?
00:41 orlok and its the difference between those two resistors that flows over the.. coil thing.. thta makes the needle move?
00:41 katsmeow-afk carry out on the 4017 sucks, ya know
00:41 rue_mohr dk dont stock or have prices on any roms
00:41 orlok so the needle posision is based on the difference in resistance between the fixed resistor and the variable resistor in the tank
00:41 katsmeow-afk i dunno orlok, i always dispised car guages and simply refused to work on them,, made life sooo much easier :-)
00:42 rue_mohr ebay says ~$4
00:42 katsmeow-afk rue, i think you haveto use flash chips
00:42 orlok i should be able to get a "digitalally controlled resistor" and replace the shunt resistor with something of a suitable value, and control the guage via the digital resistor
00:43 orlok katsmeow-afk: yeah, fiddly fiddly things
00:43 rue_mohr $7 for eeprom chips
00:43 katsmeow-afk any transistor and an opamp and resistor to control it, or a mosfet
00:44 katsmeow-afk rue, i got 300 flash chips in those 300 FREE cable boxes
00:44 rue_mohr yes
00:44 katsmeow-afk laugh at me some more?
00:44 rue_mohr I dont think that challange would accept scrounge prices
00:44 katsmeow-afk or obsolete parts
00:44 rue_mohr no, those things have AWESOME parts in them
00:45 rue_mohr I need a programmable, nonvolatile, parallel, thruhole memory chip for ~$3
00:45 rue_mohr or less
00:45 katsmeow-afk ok, a cheap old avr with 2k of ram 1k of eeprom, and in a dip-40 package for lots of io pins
00:46 rue_mohr can you list an 'infinite' supplier?
00:46 katsmeow-afk AT90S4414-8PC
00:46 orlok http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=ZK8879
00:46 katsmeow-afk no, i got only 200 of them too
00:47 katsmeow-afk orlok, look at the datasheet for it, it may be 5v only
00:48 rue_mohr whats found at a dollar store that has a motor in it
00:48 katsmeow-afk most such audio chips are designed now for laptops and 2v peak-peak audio
00:48 katsmeow-afk fan
00:49 katsmeow-afk dancing santas
00:49 rue_mohr anything with a controlling transistor?
00:49 rue_mohr hmm
00:49 katsmeow-afk i dunno it's been a wahile sinse i went into one of those
00:49 rue_mohr OR
00:49 katsmeow-afk my brain,, i miss it when itsoff
00:50 rue_mohr something that has enough motors and transistors to bring the price down to about $1/motor-transistor
00:50 katsmeow-afk what about those plug-in fanned air smeller things
00:50 rue_mohr !!!!!!!!!!!!
00:51 katsmeow-afk talking fish? that will give you a memory chip, audio system, and speaker
00:51 katsmeow-afk and 2 motors
00:51 rue_mohr price lower
00:51 katsmeow-afk dunno
00:51 orlok katsmeow-afk: yup, you right, 2.7V to 5.5V - Device Characteristics
00:51 rue_mohr $10 budget for all the parts to make a robot
00:52 katsmeow-afk rue, i dunno, i thought they scrapped a lot for $5 when even rednecks wouldn't buy them
00:53 rue_mohr motor driver transistor
00:53 katsmeow-afk some car parts places were selling micro cars for a couple $
00:53 rue_mohr pn2222 night be a bit light
00:53 rue_mohr trying to remember the pn of a small driver
00:53 rue_mohr darlington maybe
00:54 katsmeow-afk what will you give me for MMBT5401 in a sot-23 ?
00:54 rue_mohr heh
00:54 rue_mohr did you see the $10 robot challange?
00:54 katsmeow-afk or KST5551MFT in a sot-xx?
00:54 rue_mohr they want obtainable parts
00:54 katsmeow-afk yeas
00:54 rue_mohr no smt...
00:54 katsmeow-afk it's obtainable
00:54 katsmeow-afk why is it not obtaniable?
00:55 rue_mohr I dont think I could list you as a supplier
00:55 katsmeow-afk afaik they are stillmade
00:55 rue_mohr 2sa
00:55 rue_mohr hmm
00:55 katsmeow-afk ksa42/mpsa42 ?
00:56 rue_mohr .5A!
00:56 rue_mohr :)
00:56 katsmeow-afk yep
00:56 katsmeow-afk i got only 4000 of them tho
00:56 rue_mohr wait, pn2222 is 600ma?
00:57 katsmeow-afk i don't think so
00:57 katsmeow-afk if Tiggr was online, we could be asking her
00:57 rue_mohr why NOT uln2003?
00:58 katsmeow-afk i dunno
00:58 rue_mohr hahaha
00:58 rue_mohr look at this
00:58 rue_mohr http://www.ebay.ca/itm/1pcs-TOSHIBA-ULN2803APG-ULN2803-DARLINGTON-ARRAYS-DIP-18-IC-NEW-/271010332568?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f19797f98
00:59 rue_mohr 'protocol' hahahah
00:59 orlok hmm reminds me
01:00 orlok it seems jaycar dont sell.. the other ones..
01:00 rue_mohr 500mA
01:00 orlok uln2k3 are 7 output, whats the 8 output?
01:00 rue_mohr better off with pn2222
01:00 rue_mohr 2803 is 8 output
01:00 rue_mohr and orlok, stop being lazy with your part numbers
01:00 orlok yeah, annoying, i want 2803's for blinkenlights
01:01 rue_mohr or I'll start confusing you with pn's like 74k2
01:01 katsmeow-afk 2N2222= [!what][!electronics][!device] Material:NPN Si ; Use:SS ; Device:trans. ; Vceo:40 V ; Current:600 mA ; PwrDis:625 mw ; Gain:100-300 ; Case:TO-18
01:01 orlok ahh, gotya
01:02 katsmeow-afk PN2222= [!what][!electronics][!device] Material:NPN Si ; Use:SS ; Device:trans. ; Vceo:30V ; Current:600mA ; PwrDis:625mW ; Gain:100-300 ; Freq:300 Mhz- ; Case:TO-92

01:02 rue_mohr *blink*
01:02 rue_mohr 1A?
01:02 katsmeow-afk P2N2222A= [!what][!electronics][!device] Material:NPN Si ; Use:SS ; Device:trans. ; Vceo:40V ; Current:600mA ; PwrDis:625mW ; Gain:100-300 ; Freq:300 Mhz- ; Case:TO-92 TO226AA
01:02 katsmeow-afk Freq:300 Mhz ???
01:03 katsmeow-afk these are obviously some new design
01:03 rue_mohr I'm sure at a gain of 1
01:03 rue_mohr thats the -3db tho
01:03 katsmeow-afk i dunno, i just loaded Tiggr's irc db into a text editor
01:04 e_mohr would like to see the test circuit diagram for tha
01:04 katsmeow-afk 104,698 lines like what i pasted, but different subject matters too
01:05 katsmeow-afk MMBT5401= [!what][!electronics][!device] Material:PNP Si ; Use:SS ; Device:trans. ; Vceo:150V ; Current:600mA ; PwrDis:350mW ; Gain:60-240 ; Freq:100-300 Mhz ; Case:SOT-23
01:05 rue_mohr ok I have a 7805, 2 motors, 10 transistors, and 3 7805 for $8 leaves me $2 to build the frame with
01:06 rue_mohr I need sensors, (gonna make them from wire) and a frame
01:06 rue_mohr how much are poopsicle sticks?
01:06 rue_mohr er
01:06 rue_mohr hehe
01:07 rue_mohr wow, china wants $3.30 for 10 wood coffee stirr sticks
01:07 katsmeow-afk use twigs, they are free
01:08 katsmeow-afk or better: stalks of tough grass
01:08 rue_mohr supplier: Forrest
01:08 katsmeow-afk broom grass
01:08 katsmeow-afk bamboo shoots, dried
01:08 rue_mohr ok I got 100 sirrers for $8
01:08 rue_mohr this is a value thing, not a price thing
01:08 tsmeow-afk offers 1000ft of weedwhacker line for less, plus s&a
01:09 rue_mohr wonder how mucha peice of flashing is
01:09 katsmeow-afk but they can't order everything, even chinese free shipping is gonna run over $10 eventually
01:10 rue_mohr ?
01:11 rue_mohr oh wow
01:11 e_mohr got an
01:11 katsmeow-afk if all of us ordered 1400 tons of stuff with free s&h from china, you think they'd actually send a ship over to here for free?
01:12 rue_mohr yup
01:12 katsmeow-afk if that's true, i want one of those subs sunk off the coast, please
01:12 rue_mohr I ordered 8 packs of 5 skateboard bearings with f s&h
01:12 katsmeow-afk that's not a full freighter's worth tho
01:13 rue_mohr "free shipping" means the shipping is built into the price
01:13 katsmeow-afk if all the africans wanna build your $10 bot, China won't ship it all to them free
01:14 katsmeow-afk look at those arc welders, they used bare wire of any kind they could get, wrapped it with scrap cloth of any kind they could get, and made EI cores of roofing tin
01:15 katsmeow-afk i should be asleep
01:16 theBear hehe
01:16 theBear saw a whippersnipper/whacker the other week, WITH NO AUTO FEED ! had to manually re-string it everytime you needed fresh string !
01:17 katsmeow-afk usetobe, you just snap in a 18inch piece and off you go again
01:17 katsmeow-afk leaving a row of 8inch pieces behind
01:19 theBear mmm... i can't remember ever 'using' one with no auto feed, but damn i like autofeed :) except when it jams up <grin>
01:19 theBear all about a good initial wind/loading, then yer good
01:19 rue_mohr theBear, I have to stop mine and undo it another click
01:19 rue_mohr dosn't do that hit-it-on-the-ground thing
01:23 theBear poor rue :(
01:23 theBear you sure you getting it loaded right ? <grin>
01:23 rue_mohr you actually have to pull the spool to unclick it
01:24 theBear so updating the old resume here... i gotta update "Basic lighting experience (setup and operation)" to something slightly less than "Experienced lighting technician (planning, setup and operation)" , 'cos i'm honest... so err, how do i word 'fairly experienced, but not a ninja' ?
01:26 rue_mohr how many address lines on a 256k rom?
01:27 theBear depends how wide it is... you mean like a standard eeprom ?
01:27 rue_mohr 8
01:27 rue_mohr 512 is 16?
01:27 theBear c'mon man, some info
01:27 theBear and wouldn't 512 just add 1 line ?
01:28 rue_mohr yes
01:28 rue_mohr I think between coathangers, popsicle sticks, and flashing I can do this
01:29 theBear just found all the code and plans and stuff for that last 'real' avr project i did few years back.. the err, one that tom and rif helped with
01:29 katsmeow-afk i'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time, i think i have forgotten this before
01:29 rue_mohr :)
01:33 rue_mohr I could run a 27256 off 6V batteries with a diode could't I?
01:33 katsmeow-afk maybe
01:33 rue_mohr 5.7 is vmax I'm sure
01:33 theBear katsmeow-afk, heh, well said
01:34 rue_mohr and I'm sure they will go down to about 4v or less before they start to act up
01:34 rue_mohr it IS a cmos rom
01:34 rue_mohr or nmos
01:34 rue_mohr mos, whatever
01:34 theBear hehe
01:34 rue_mohr their all moscly oxides
01:34 katsmeow-afk sea moss
01:35 theBear maurice moss
01:35 rue_mohr sea moss logic in waves?
01:35 theBear i'll see what i can see
01:35 theBear hmmm... i suppose i need to buy food today
01:36 rue_mohr can I run the motors off +-3V and the logic off 6v
01:36 rue_mohr ground the middle...
01:36 rue_mohr hmm
01:36 theBear grr, all these years later and simple document editors still haven't made bullet points/lists any less ridiculous to deal with
01:37 rue_mohr write in html
01:37 rue_mohr thats what I did
01:37 rue_mohr its a widely accepted format
01:39 katsmeow-afk i quit using html bullets because they didn't format right and i wanted to use my own bullet pics
01:39 rue_mohr css must let you do that now
01:40 ace4016 it does
01:41 katsmeow-afk just as well, my html.html isn't online now
01:42 katsmeow-afk i wanted to control the wordwrap around the bullet, the size, color, shape, placement, vertical centering, etc
01:42 katsmeow-afk i goto bed, gnites
01:43 ace4016 night
01:44 rue_mohr I have a bidirectional driver that takes 3 transistors
01:44 rue_mohr it should be blow-up proof
01:46 rue_mohr 2 transisotrs if I can get a comp pair
01:48 ferdna need to know how to test an x cap...
01:48 ferdna CARLI MPX40/100/21
01:50 rue_mohr how does a person make a 4x AA battery holder out of popsicle sticks?
01:51 theBear god knows, but i can recommend pva over hotglue, i don't care what poppa jon scott says
01:51 rue_bed PIPE!
01:51 rue_bed your a genious!
01:51 rue_bed and heatgun
01:51 rue_bed pvs 2" teleduct
01:52 rue_bed wire and glue
01:52 rue_bed ok
01:52 rue_bed use fingers rue_mohr
01:52 theBear hooray ! i'm a genius
01:53 rue_bed I totally forgot about taking a heatgun to pipe for generic plastic
01:53 rue_bed that actually just radically simplified the frame too
01:53 rue_bed wow
01:53 rue_bed if my mental model is right
01:54 rue_bed one piece just became the frame and battery holder
01:58 rue_bed 2 peices, tabs didn't work out
02:02 theBear hmm... does 'plant equipment' include things like office pcs and servers, or is that something else ?
02:10 rue_bed its industrial stuff,
02:10 rue_bed telephone companies refer to 'inside plant' and 'outside plant'
02:10 rue_bed for their equip,ment inside/outside buildings
02:11 rue_bed r did you mean 'equipment for hte life support of plants in an artificial environment'
02:11 rue_bed ;)
02:29 theBear heh nah, just looking for a neat way to say 'forklifts, trucks, industrial chargers, and office computers'
09:01 rue_mohr so far my $10 robot is up to 6.85
09:02 rue_mohr er 8.83
09:02 rue_mohr I may have to appologize I cant make it come to $10
09:15 anannie rue_mohr: ????
09:15 rue_mohr $10 robot challange
09:16 anannie rue_mohr: this one? http://boingboing.net/2012/07/10/10-robot-challenge.html
09:16 rue_mohr yes
09:17 anannie rue_mohr: Cool, so what are you entering?
09:18 rue_mohr its a programmable wheeled robot platform that can do either line following or whisker navigation
09:19 anannie I'm guessing that most of the machines will be a pcb + 2 motors with wheels and 2 coasters made out of nubs, but maybe if you make it really tiny and made the gears out of plastic you could make a hot swappable body that allows kids to put legs or other crazy things on it
09:20 rue_mohr just the gears would be over $10
09:20 anannie No they don't have to be
09:21 anannie I've bought gears for $.50
09:21 rue_mohr they do, gears are stupidly expensive
09:21 rue_mohr has to be belt drive
09:22 anannie why do they have to be so expensive? You don't need to design something of extremely high quality with high tolerances that's going to last for a long time.... I bet this can be engineered around and if you think cheap it should be possible to do it. Just make sure that fine gears aren't needed and you just use 6 on either side, one on the motor and two on either side for whatever will be snapped on
09:23 rue_mohr gears just are edxpensive, I dont know why
09:23 rue_mohr whats the total so far of your entry?
09:23 anannie Meh I'm not making one and I won't make one
09:23 anannie (this is the first time I've heard about this)
09:24 rue_mohr I dont think you will find a source of gears in north america for under $1 ea (for really small gears)
09:24 anannie I'm guessing that's due to craftsmanship and costs for moulding in case of plastics
09:24 rue_mohr nope
09:24 anannie It is possible in india :D
09:24 rue_mohr expensive, even right outa china
09:24 rue_mohr and you cant buy from china unless you know someone over there
09:24 anannie I've actually bought gears that cheap
09:24 anannie down here
09:24 rue_mohr where
09:25 anannie which are passable, they aren't lego quality but they are Okay
09:25 anannie India
09:25 rue_mohr store or other?
09:26 anannie small shops and so on... Think about all of those tiny tape mechanical tape recorders that used to be sold for dirt cheap
09:27 anannie they had gears in them and well they had to come from somewhere... (ah the magic of supply chains)
09:27 rue_mohr yea, this is 'go to seller and buy stuff' prices
09:28 rue_mohr oh good, the whiskers only add 10c
09:29 rue_mohr anannie, where can a person buy metal coathangers?
09:30 theBear rue_mohr, that's a tricky question these days.. usually "2 dollar" or large discount dept. stores are your best chance
09:30 anannie rue_mohr: Anywhere, any departmental store or home improvement store should stock those, but those are too thick and heavy for whiskers, but if you straighten one and chop it into sections then you could make something raft like that's cheap and rigid and can be the body for your robot
09:31 rue_mohr dont need to, the robots frame is pvc plastic panel
09:31 anannie will that be rigid enough for a kid to poke around and mess around with?
09:32 rue_mohr 3mm thick (or so)
09:32 anannie meh the bully will probably snap it
09:32 rue_mohr at the size of this, it wont really snap
09:32 rue_mohr it would bend/fold
09:33 anannie Okay how about this take a few coathanger sections and then pour araldite on them, and just compress it for a bit
09:33 rue_mohr araldite?
09:33 rue_mohr no
09:33 anannie you'll have something pretty and rigid :D
09:33 anannie http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Araldite
09:33 rue_mohr on a project like this, its important to keep the parts count as low as you can
09:34 rue_mohr pff, I see 10 wire coathangers on ebay for $8
09:34 theBear araldite = pva
09:34 anannie but this is keeping the parts count low... You're just breaking a wire and then encasing it in a solid, transparent araldite frame (which can be done in record time industrially) and then putting motors on top
09:34 theBear oh wait, or epoxy maybe
09:34 rue_mohr I hate my breakfast
09:34 theBear ahh, both :)
09:34 anannie what's breakfast?
09:35 rue_mohr I eat it slower every day
09:35 rue_mohr porrige
09:35 anannie theBear: Araldite is a miracle :D
09:35 anannie rue_mohr: Ahhh sounds good
09:35 rue_mohr I"m 5 mins late and not half thru
09:35 annie eats one meal a day, lunch and that's
09:35 theBear anannie, pva is a miracle, 24hr araldite is pretty decent, 5 minute araldite sucks
09:36 anannie theBear: I've never tried pva... is it good?
09:36 rue_mohr damnit its garbage day too
09:37 anannie rue_mohr: :(
09:38 theBear anannie, it's the "white stuff" ... "wood glue"
09:39 theBear and for wood with good contact area, pva and it's fancy crosslinking decendants are quite amazing, but not much good for anything else
09:40 anannie theBear: Have you ever seen the MIT OCW lectures by professor Sadoway?
09:41 theBear i have not
09:44 anannie theBear: There's this lecture in which he does a rant about plywood and crosslinking of polymers, it's awesome.
09:44 anannie theBear: I recommend them, yes I do.
09:46 theBear it's on the list
09:46 anannie-working xD
10:00 Tom_itx anybody see Marty McFly walking around?
10:00 Tom_itx today is 'Back to the future' day
10:00 theBear seriously ? and nah, he doesn't walk around anymore
10:00 theBear oh, but wait
10:01 theBear hang on ? you mean ? i thought it was 2015 ?
10:01 Tom_itx nope
10:01 theBear damn, my poor memory
10:02 Tom_itx thank goodness it's one of the first things to go
10:02 theBear heh yeah, without memory or wits i'm gonner need these looks
10:03 anannie-working Oh so that's the guy who gave me his number?
10:03 anannie-working Ah
10:03 anannie-working Yeah I have, I told him that his clothes were inside out
10:04 anannie-working and that no it's not fashionable unless he's a hipster
10:04 anannie-working or a wannabe hipster
10:04 anannie-working (all teh cool kids wear prada :p)
10:06 theBear woah, now i'm confused
10:06 theBear oh, no i'm not
10:32 rrywolf stretches out next to katsmeow-
11:54 annie-working wonders if furrywolf and katsmeow-afk would allow her to stretch out to
12:00 Modeuse hello
12:00 tobbor Modeuse! like, totally tell us about the project!
12:04 anannie-working hi Modeuse
12:04 Modeuse how are you?
12:04 anannie-working tobbar is a bot, ignore it... but honestly I would love to hear about your projects
12:04 anannie-working Modeuse: Not so good, haven't been able to focus and work, but on the other hand I'm getting better all the time, you?
12:05 Modeuse it's raining :( 2 hours ago the sun was still shining
12:06 anannie-working Modeuse: London?
12:06 Modeuse (sorry for my bad english im living in Germany an haven't write english for about 3 years) ^^
12:07 anannie-working Modeuse: That's perfectly fine...
12:07 anannie-working I'm sorry but I don't speak any german
12:09 Modeuse i had been surprised if you can speak german
12:10 anannie-working well all of my crushes have been german and a bunch of german men have saved my skin oh so many times, so I plan to be fluent someday :D
12:13 anannie-working that was a joke
12:13 Modeuse hmm i don't belive you ^^
12:15 anannie-working Modeuse: Hrm, so what do you like to build?
12:15 Modeuse Robots of course ^^
12:16 anannie-working Modeuse: What kind?
12:17 Modeuse not realy sure i which direction i will go on
12:17 Modeuse at first i want to bild a car which can dirve forwared, left and right
12:31 Modeuse Hello Allen29
12:31 Modeuse @ anannie-working but it is harder than i thought
12:32 anannie-working Modeuse: Yup...
12:33 Modeuse did i interrupt you while doing your work?
12:35 anannie-working Modeuse: What I suggest is starting with something simple. Take a piece of wood, saw it unto a small square, bolt two motors on it on either side, add two coasters at the other two ends, find 2 wheels and attache it. Learn how to make something called an H-bridge
12:35 anannie-working and try to run it
12:36 Modeuse nice idea !
12:37 anannie-working ty
12:37 GuShH then add lazors and rule the world with it.
12:40 Modeuse sorry GuShH but i won't steal your Idea ^^
12:40 GuShH o.o
12:42 Modeuse what?
12:44 Modeuse if you want to rule the world whit lazors you might have invented a very strong lazor . So it's your Project and i don't think i can fix it whitout your help ;)
12:44 GuShH :(
12:47 Modeuse whats your problem GuShH?
12:48 GuShH no problem
12:48 Modeuse okay
13:48 Smartx hello there
13:53 Rue-phone Kat could you find me a best value eBay for dip 74374?
13:55 Rue-phone Ping
13:57 Rue-phone Ok catch ya after work then
14:05 Smartx ping
14:11 Modeuse pong
15:27 furrywolf grrrr. usgs has "upgraded" their earthquake site. now it doesn't work.
15:27 furrywolf they replaced the perfectly functional map pages with a "real time" version that doesn't work.
15:27 GuShH furrywolf: it doesn't work for you because you disabled javascript?
15:27 GuShH or it doesn't work for anyone at all?
15:28 GuShH hopefully it's not flash.
15:29 furrywolf it doesn't work because it's a piece of javascript crap, which never works.
15:29 furrywolf even with javascript on.
15:29 GuShH that's ajax and hype for ya.
15:29 furrywolf it attempts to do smooth scrolling, loading stuff in the background, etc, which javascript is too slow to ever pretend to do.
15:29 GuShH worst part is, someone got a juicy paycheck for that shit.
15:29 GuShH now _that_ annoys me.
15:30 furrywolf it worked perfectly before. it was simple and fast.
15:30 GuShH I take it no legacy mode remains
15:31 furrywolf of course not. at least, not that I can find. could be it still exists if I had a link to it.
15:33 GuShH :(
15:35 furrywolf grrr, their "did you fell it" page is even more worthless, and insists the location field is required and won't let me submit it, even when it's filled in. their new map seems incapable of processing a us zip code correctly, and tries putting it in canada.
15:36 furrywolf feel
15:37 furrywolf gah! they even broke their contact us page!
15:37 furrywolf if you try typing anything, every single character causes it to go search for a list of "helpful" suggestions.
15:38 furrywolf meaning you can type about 0.2 characters/second maximum.
15:39 GuShH wtf
15:41 Squint furry, when that happens, I make up a fake address :p
15:41 Squint unless you actually need to see your own location :/
15:42 GuShH chances are that's one of the uses you'd have for such site....
15:42 furrywolf Squint: ... the whole point of the "did you feel it" is to let them build a map of user-reported attributes (shaking strength, duration, damage, etc). giving an incorrect location makes that rather useless.
15:43 GuShH -_-
15:43 uint
15:43 uint didn't read enough before commen
15:43 ShH brutally stabs Squint with a frozen
15:44 anannie-working furrywolf: what are you talking about btw?
15:44 ShH puts the murder weapon in furrywolf's n
15:44 Squint atleast YOU know where he is then
15:45 GuShH you may now click "did you feel it"
15:47 anannie-working GuShH: That reminds me of a story I read about this housewife who kills her husband with a large ham and then feeds it to the officers....
15:50 furrywolf bbl, time for work.
15:51 uint feels GushH's
17:42 sw0rdfish where's frank
17:44 ace4016 at the bottom of the Hudson; and where you'll be if you don't spill the beans, tiny.
17:45 sw0rdfish ace4016, you an "Alien" 1979 movie, fan?
17:45 sw0rdfish or like.... were you a fan
17:45 ace4016 did alien come out in 1979?
17:46 ace4016 i was born in 86, so i have no perception of when it came out :P
19:16 rue_mohr no answer from kat
20:15 Tom_itx ping
20:15 Tom_itx mmm
20:47 furrywolf pong?
21:28 furrywolf can we please please kill everyone on ebay who posts blue-painted halogen bulbs as HID?
21:29 rue_mohr heh
21:30 furrywolf like 95% of matches for HID are halogen.
21:33 Tom_itx mill is working super now
21:34 Tom_itx backlash comp certainly fixed my hole tolerances
21:34 furrywolf I've been wanting a portable floodlight, so thinking of taking an old 500W halogen shoplight, drilling a hole in the back, and sticking in a 100W HID bulb...
21:34 katsmeow-afk what no answer? that's all i get?
21:34 Tom_itx for a little mill i programmed 1.030 and got 1.028
21:34 furrywolf katsmeow-afk: ?
21:34 Tom_itx sorry katsmeow-afk i was afk
21:34 Tom_itx and missed it
21:34 katsmeow-afk [19:05] <rue_mohr> no answer from kat
21:34 katsmeow-afk i did answer
21:34 Tom_itx oh
21:35 Tom_itx so the accuracy just went up on this little critter
21:36 furrywolf then stick the ballast to it somewhere, put a cigarette lighter plug on a long cable, and presto... portable floodlight.

21:37 Tom_itx holy crap
21:38 katsmeow-afk i replied 6.5hrs ago
21:38 furrywolf Tom_itx: now fine-tune it until you get a 1.030 hole. :)
21:39 Tom_itx meh
21:39 Tom_itx it was probably tool deflection
21:39 Tom_itx it was in plexiglas too
21:39 furrywolf a dial indicator is most helpful for setting the backlash compensation... I just mounted the dial indicator to the headstock so it was measuing the position of the vise, then cranked it back and forth, and checked when it actually started moving.
21:39 Tom_itx i put a last word indicator on all axis and adjusted it
21:40 Tom_itx same thing...
21:40 katsmeow-afk no reply from rue
21:41 furrywolf yeah, two thous isn't bad
21:43 furrywolf I need a bigger mill.
21:43 Tom_itx so do i
21:43 Tom_itx i want one my house will fit inside
21:44 Tom_itx meh, maybe not quite that bit
21:44 Tom_itx big*
21:44 Tom_itx it would cost too much to run it
21:45 furrywolf heh
21:45 rue_mohr sorry kat, was expecting something here, thanks!
21:45 furrywolf right now I have 3x8 inch travel or so... I'd like at least 12x18.
21:45 Tom_itx just cut a new tool rack to hold my holders and cutters
21:45 rue_mohr I just pulled the pci control card out of a hospital chemical analizer
21:45 furrywolf the 3 inch Y axis is too small to do much of anything.
21:45 rue_mohr funny thing, its a 4 port rs232 card
21:45 Tom_itx i got about 7 x 9 or so
21:46 furrywolf that's much more useful.
21:46 Tom_itx you should have gotten the one with the extended arm
21:46 furrywolf I've done very few useful projects with my mill, because I never do anything small enough to fit it.
21:46 Tom_itx that's the sole reason i got it
21:46 furrywolf I got the one that was cheap on craigslist.
21:46 furrywolf that's the sole reason I got it.
21:46 furrywolf I can't afford new things.
21:46 Tom_itx ahh
21:47 Tom_itx you saw the video cutting the box didn't you?
21:47 furrywolf no
21:47 furrywolf and I ignore most everything that looks like a video.
21:47 Tom_itx ahh that's right
21:47 Tom_itx nevermind then
21:49 furrywolf http://www.ebay.com/itm/A2Z-CNC-LONG-18-Extended-Y-Travel-Base-for-Sherline-Mill-Bolt-on-W-Screw-XTBS1-/320756252135?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aae8ffde7 ohh, shiny...
21:52 furrywolf I talked to Craig at sherline a while ago... I could upgrade to the 5" travel base, but it'd be $180 or something like that...
21:52 orlok hmm
21:52 orlok they used to be australian didnt they?
21:53 furrywolf loooong time ago
21:53 furrywolf you also need a headstock spacer in addition to the base...
21:54 orlok lol digg
21:54 e_mohr goes to check for pack
21:55 furrywolf ?
21:57 furrywolf hrmm... having all that travel would need a BIG headstock spacer. rigidity would probably be an issue.
21:57 orlok digg just sold for $500,000
21:57 furrywolf ok. you're aware "lol digg" means nothing to everyone else, right?
21:59 Tom_itx that base would be nice
22:00 Tom_itx you would still need an extended arm to make use of the travel
22:00 Tom_itx i could get like 12" from that i bet
22:00 Tom_itx at least 10
22:00 furrywolf yep. as I said, I'd need a thick headstock spacer, to actually make use of any of it.
22:01 Tom_itx i got a baseplate spacer to raise the z level too
22:01 furrywolf I haven't had that problem...
22:01 Tom_itx i don't use it much at all right now
22:01 Tom_itx with this plate on the table it would be handy at times
22:02 furrywolf once I buy that base, headstock spacers, etc, I'll have spent several times more than I paid for the mill, and have a machine with crap rigidity.
22:02 Tom_itx yeah
22:02 Tom_itx that's kinda where i'm at with it
22:02 Tom_itx tormach is a good one sp?
22:02 Tom_itx but $$$
22:02 furrywolf I have $, not $$$.
22:03 Tom_itx http://www.tormach.com/product_pcnc_1100.html
22:04 Tom_itx i wanna make an A axis soon
22:04 furrywolf yeah, that looks a LOT more expensive than I can afford.
22:04 Tom_itx me too but i can wish
22:04 furrywolf I have sherline's rotary table... one of these days I'll mount a stepper to it and use it for A.
22:04 Tom_itx how much is it?
22:05 Tom_itx their tooling is way too $$$
22:05 furrywolf how much is what?
22:05 Tom_itx their rotary
22:06 furrywolf $300ish I think.
22:07 Tom_itx 270
22:07 Tom_itx http://www.sherline.com/3700pg.htm
22:08 furrywolf way more than my budget. I didn't buy it new.
22:08 Tom_itx i wonder if it has a taper in the hole
22:08 Tom_itx you have one?
22:09 furrywolf <furrywolf> I have sherline's rotary table... one of these days I'll mount a stepper to it and use it for A.
22:09 Tom_itx ahh i misread that
22:09 Tom_itx what'd you give for it?
22:10 furrywolf I got the whole mill and accessories for $150.
22:10 furrywolf don't know how that breaks down into individual parts.
22:10 Tom_itx i'd give you that for it :)
22:10 furrywolf it was in pretty sad shape... it's still worn out, but it's working now.
22:11 Tom_itx i bet the rotary isn't worn that much
22:11 Tom_itx they don't get used every day
22:11 furrywolf http://fw.bushytails.net/zaxisslop.jpg that's not backlash... that was how bad the spindle bearings were.
22:12 Tom_itx heh
22:12 Tom_itx i should take a pic of this plexi
22:12 furrywolf http://fw.bushytails.net/spindlecarnage.jpg
22:12 Tom_itx it's not too bad
22:13 furrywolf everything is worn out, lots of rust too.
22:13 furrywolf it was used for production... it was making fixtures to hold a part for another machine that made some form of medical stent.
22:13 furrywolf (according to the guy I got from)
22:13 furrywolf company folded, it went home in his trunk. :)
22:14 furrywolf it's hard to see in that image, but the spindle had shifted so much the pulley at about a 32nd into the headstock.
22:15 furrywolf ate about
22:15 Tom_itx just a sec and i'll post it
22:15 furrywolf backlash was about an eighth inch on every axis...
22:16 furrywolf everything loose, could tilt the saddle about five degrees to the side...
22:16 furrywolf it saw hard use. heh.
22:19 furrywolf I got it pretty well tuned up... backlash is down to a few thous, but all the brass nuts should be replaced. the ways are worn unevenly, but I was able to get out almost all perceptable free play, finding a compromise between binding at the less-worn spots and flopping about at the more-worn spots...
22:19 Tom_itx http://tom-itx.dyndns.org:81/~webpage/cnc/cnc_files/millholder1.jpg
22:20 Tom_itx i left some uncut so i can hand drill a few different sizes
22:20 Tom_itx http://tom-itx.dyndns.org:81/~webpage/cnc/cnc_files/millholder2.jpg
22:22 furrywolf those seem to be too large for my connection to want to load right now. from the top 1", looks like plexi with holes?
22:22 Tom_itx yeah
22:22 Tom_itx don't worry about it
22:22 rrywolf hits reload repeatedly, since firing up wget for it is too much
22:22 Tom_itx mine is very slow too. lemme reset the router
22:22 Tom_itx brb
22:23 furrywolf got #2 to load... looks nice.
22:23 furrywolf I have all my tooling in a plastic organizer tray thingy.
22:29 Tom_itx i'll glue a piece of scrap under it so they don't fall out and one to the back to mount it to my enclosure
22:30 Tom_itx http://tom-itx.dyndns.org:81/~webpage/boards/USBTiny_Mkii/Boxes/milling1.jpg
22:30 Tom_itx you can see the old one there on the left
22:31 furrywolf bah, you got the 2000 8-way mill.
22:31 Tom_itx yeah i told you that's why i got it was for the extra Y
22:31 furrywolf flashcut cnc kit, not sherline cnc kit, right?
22:31 Tom_itx yeah but it's all been replaced now
22:32 Tom_itx with linuxcnc and a new control
22:32 Tom_itx http://tom-itx.dyndns.org:81/~webpage/cnc/psu/psu_index.php
22:32 furrywolf the stepper mounts look like the flashcut ones I have, and nothing like the sherline ones. :)
22:32 Tom_itx psu and control
22:32 Tom_itx started working on a spindle encoder
22:33 furrywolf I want to make a stepper-driven spindle, so I can use it to cut threads on the lathe.
22:33 furrywolf just a stepper and a big timing belt...
22:34 furrywolf servo would be better, but a lot more work.
22:34 Tom_itx or a servo
22:34 Tom_itx yeah
22:35 furrywolf I also figure a stepper-driven spindle would make a nice B axis. :)
22:51 Tom_itx this new drive is awesome. after cutting all that the steppers and drivers were barely warm
22:51 furrywolf cool steppers is bad.
22:51 Tom_itx with my old driver i would barely be able to touch the steppers
22:51 furrywolf means you're not getting full torque from them.
22:51 furrywolf I like them to be toasty warm...
22:51 Tom_itx it's got a 70% current reduction after 1 sec of no pulse
22:52 furrywolf how often did you get 1sec of no pulses when cutting circles? :)
22:52 Tom_itx and a dsp on the microstep to maximize torque
22:52 Tom_itx not very often
22:52 Tom_itx 40000 pulses per inch
22:53 Tom_itx i'm rather impressed really
22:53 Tom_itx they cost quite a bit but i think it was a good investment
22:53 Tom_itx i'd had the others for prolly 15 yrs or so
22:54 furrywolf anything that costs quite a bit means I can't buy it. heh.
22:55 furrywolf I might make my own... a little msp430 driving pwm for each channel.
22:55 Tom_itx it took me forever to get to this point
22:55 Tom_itx i found that box on ebay for $22 and shipping
22:55 furrywolf I take home about $220/week... and once I pay bills, buy food, etc, there's pretty much nothing left.
22:55 Tom_itx it's a nice heavy industrial control box
22:56 Tom_itx i try to scavenge all i can
22:56 furrywolf right now I need to buy batteries.
22:56 furrywolf and plumbing. it'll be so nice to have indoor plumbing...
