00:15 rue_mohr I think my link from emotion to learning is wrong, its emotion to stress, and stress to learning
01:05 e_bed senses a disturbance in the f
08:59 furrywolf *tailfluffyawnstretch*
09:04 furrywolf yay! there's a bit of sun today!
09:38 any50166533 quick! go lay in it!
09:39 furrywolf ?
09:39 katsmeow [08:49] <furrywolf> *tailfluffyawnstretch*
09:39 katsmeow [08:54] <furrywolf> yay! there's a bit of sun today!
09:39 katsmeow [09:28] <any50166533> quick! go lay in it!
09:40 katsmeow nm
09:40 furrywolf ah :)
09:40 furrywolf unfortunately, it has since gone away, being replaced by solid clouds again.
09:41 katsmeow i am hoping for clouds today, i need to garden stuff on the roof, and get that ittybitty pump tried
09:41 katsmeow no water = no garden
09:42 katsmeow free water = i beat the water company,, they set prices economically unfit for watering a garden, which is why i bought land with water on it, and how dogs stopped me from gardeing, etc
09:43 furrywolf someone I know spends $80/month on water. her daily usage is 80-100 gallons.
09:43 tsmeow
09:43 katsmeow that's pretty steep prices on water
09:43 katsmeow makes it impossible to save over buying food in grocery store
09:44 furrywolf I might try drilling a shallow well on her property.
09:44 katsmeow you pretty much haveto not grow water-luving plants, and recycle all you can
09:46 katsmeow a single tomatoe plant at peak fruiting can use a gallon per day, that's something you haveto figure on, and maybe stagger growth cycles vs other plants to even the water use load
09:48 katsmeow also, if she watches her water bill, and whatever water is left unused during the off-grow season, put it in a pool thelast days of the water billing cycle, for use in a couple months whent he garden will need it, this willalso let the chlorine evaporate
09:49 furrywolf left unused? huh?
09:49 katsmeow $1/watt = the cells break even with the powerco in 10 yrs,, hoping the cells last 10 yrs, which is why the webpage says they guarantee they'll last 10 yrs
09:49 katsmeow does she use 80-100 gallons a day in winter?
09:50 furrywolf yes
09:50 furrywolf and the cost of water is the same year-round.
09:50 katsmeow <blink> why?
09:50 katsmeow i didn't ask about the cost of the water
09:50 furrywolf if the cost of water doesn't change, why would you store it for later?
09:50 furrywolf summer and winter aren't much different here.
09:51 katsmeow base useage here is x-gal-month, if i use under x-gal, there's cheap water unused, if i use over x-gal i get charged extra
09:52 furrywolf that's not how it is here. you pay for every gallon.
09:52 katsmeow if i have a garden, it WILL use enough i get charged extra
09:52 katsmeow so if she uses only 20gal a day her water bill will be only 25%?
09:53 katsmeow if she uses only 8 gal a day, the bill will be 10% ?
09:53 katsmeow you pay for every gall here too, in blocks of 1000 gallons
09:54 katsmeow if you use 1 gal over base , you pay for the next 1000 gallons
09:54 furrywolf no, it's $50/month just for being connected, then there's the per-gallon charge on top of that.
09:54 katsmeow each added 1000 gallons costs more than the previous 1000 gallons
09:55 katsmeow so there is not escalating rate as i described here?
09:55 furrywolf not that I know of.
09:55 katsmeow hmm, ok
09:55 furrywolf it's a small town, only 150ish people on city water.
09:55 furrywolf they might do things for simplicity. heh.
09:55 furrywolf they didn't even get water meters until ~10 years ago.
09:56 katsmeow here, if you use even 1 gallon of the next block of water, you outgha use the entire 1000gal block, because you're gonna pay the same either way
09:57 katsmeow if you cannot use it immeadiately, and are handy with your paws, it makes sense to make some storage for it, within reason
09:58 katsmeow is 20,000mcd white "superbright" ?
09:59 furrywolf mcds are a roughly useless measurement.
09:59 katsmeow and do they get 20,000 by simply cranking the power till the led is about to burn out?
10:00 furrywolf if you need to actually illuminate anything, not serve as an indicator, find an LED rated it lumens, not mcd.
10:02 katsmeow i was just looking, rue said he wanted some $1 item that was iteresting
10:07 katsmeow hmm @ http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-USB-Audio-Stereo-Power-Amplifier-board-2-X-2W-Class-D-XP-Win7-Mac-OS-/170823137481?_trksid=p4340.m1982&_trkparms=aid%3D555001%26algo%3DPW.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D7%26meid%3D348295727266649691%26pid%3D100009%26prg%3D1004%26rk%3D4%26
10:09 furrywolf http://www.ebay.com/itm//170823137481 is much eaiser to paste. :)
10:10 furrywolf also, 4W output != 500ma * 5v...
10:10 rizlah When buying a multimeter, does the price matter much?
10:11 katsmeow i was hmming at the url too
10:11 furrywolf depends on what you're doing.
10:11 furrywolf the harbor freight $3.99 meters are adequate for tossing in a trunk, but not for precision measurements...
10:11 rizlah Just thinking I see some at $15, some at $150
10:11 katsmeow buy on features, anyone can charge you more than you need to pay
10:11 katsmeow i've seen $8 meters being charged $28 for
10:12 furrywolf I've certainly noticed Fluke etc seem more durable, and have better support.
10:12 katsmeow i've had "good ole merican namebrands" like Simpson and Fluke die, and my Micronta from 1970's is still going strong
10:13 katsmeow http://www.ebay.com/itm/190606079584
10:14 katsmeow http://www.ebay.com/itm/180786036244
10:14 katsmeow same meter
10:15 katsmeow or look for meter: Excel DT9205
10:15 katsmeow ac-dc v, ac-dc amps, ohms, caps, xistor tester
10:15 katsmeow i got it for the caps tester
10:16 katsmeow reads the capacitance, not the esr :-(
10:16 furrywolf I want a meter with a good set of capacitance, inductance, esr modes... something I don't have yet.
10:16 furrywolf bbl, time for work
10:17 katsmeow yeas, good luck with that, if it costs more than $10, they prolly won' make it
10:24 rizlah I see
10:24 rizlah Thanks for the info
10:31 katsmeow it all depends on your criteria,, and if you see it for $80, see if you can find it listed for $60, etc, that's just good shopping
10:32 katsmeow that lil $8 one is perfect for dropping in pocket away fromt he bench, and i use it on the bench too, it's handy and cheap enough to have your paws get useto the same user interface (knob layout and features) everywhere
10:33 katsmeow caution: open it and look for pinched wires, re-route and tack with a drop of superglue if needed, but for $8, it's worth the effort, imo
10:39 rizlah I have no professional need for one, but more of a hobbyist/general use case
10:39 tsmeow nods that you do not need a $250
10:39 rizlah Thinking of gettin the Excel
10:40 katsmeow that's a big meter, it's almost 8" long and 3.75" wide
10:40 rizlah Really? :o
10:40 katsmeow 2.5 wide display, 1" tall chars
10:40 rizlah WHy such big characters?
10:41 rizlah Compensating for short test leads?
10:41 rizlah hurrr
10:41 katsmeow because that's what you're paying for
10:41 rizlah but no, maybe it's not so good idea
10:41 katsmeow it also has no backlight (the $8 one does), but has a sample-hold button
10:41 rizlah This one? http://www.ebay.com/itm/180786036244
10:42 katsmeow the backlight is sooooooo worthwhile at nite or up under stuff in the dark
10:42 katsmeow i like the handyness of the C609 http://www.ebay.com/itm/180786036244
10:43 katsmeow that's NOT the Excel one
10:43 rizlah Right, the one I just posted?
10:44 katsmeow this is the 8" long 3.75 wide one with 1" tall chars : http://www.ebay.com/itm/Digital-EXCEL-DT9205A-AC-DC-Voltmeter-Ohmmeter-multimeter-meter-tester-OHM-VOLT-/251098502685
10:45 katsmeow i tend to use that big one only for testing caps, or if i need an AC ampmeter
10:45 katsmeow i use the lil one otherwise
10:45 rizlah Why not use the smaller one for those?
10:45 katsmeow there's no cap readout on the C609
10:46 katsmeow and no ac amps
10:46 katsmeow the C609 does have DC amps, of course
10:46 rizlah Ah. So the Excel is more complete, whereas C609 is easier to use (smaller)?
10:46 katsmeow but where do you find AC amps on a car, for instance?
10:46 katsmeow yeas
10:47 katsmeow the smaller has a backlight, reeeeeeaaallll handy when you find a bad car fuse on taillights at nite
10:48 katsmeow buy your mileage may vary
10:49 katsmeow everyone seems to have differet desires, which is why so many versions of everything exist
10:49 katsmeow i need to go do things irl
10:49 rizlah Heh, if the latter is only missing two non-common things, then easier to get the smaller
10:50 katsmeow yeas, if i am going to grab a meter to go away from the bench to test/debug, i grab the lil meter every time
10:51 katsmeow and funny thing, the olde Radio Shack Micronta, 38 years old now, stays at the front door unless i bring it down to the bench,, it was my go-to meter always , before i found the C609
10:52 rizlah Heh, quality speaks for itself I suppose
10:52 katsmeow rue has the same Micronta model, and afaik, he still uses his too
10:54 katsmeow i have had other meters, and some just keep on keepin' on,, or are easy to repair
10:55 katsmeow accidently put the meter on amps and touch car battery terminals? no prob, fix the meter with soldering iron in 5 minutes, get back to work
10:55 katsmeow hint: spare fuses in a ziplock baggie inside the meter somehow
10:56 katsmeow same with digital cameras: spare batteries in ziplock baggie in your hardcase
10:56 katsmeow ok, bbl, got things to do
14:29 katsmeow-afk http://www.abcnews.go.com/Technology/hijacking-drone-uav-aircraft-texas-students-prove-hackers/print?id=16699686
14:40 rizlah Old
14:42 katsmeow-afk k
14:42 sw0rdfish hey
14:43 sw0rdfish this fm radio wireless headset is so cheap
14:43 sw0rdfish http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wireless-Headset-Headphone-Earphone-TV-FM-Radio-NEW-/350434694635?pt=UK_AudioVisualElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_Headphones&hash=item51978915eb#ht_6191wt_956
14:43 sw0rdfish I'm just wondering if it would be safe or not
14:43 katsmeow-afk safe?
14:43 sw0rdfish like would it be harmful
14:44 sw0rdfish in any way?
14:45 katsmeow-afk yeas, someone could beat you to death with them
14:46 katsmeow-afk throw them at you from a moving aircraft
14:46 sw0rdfish hehe cuz after looking at how cheap it is + that its an unbranded product, I just remembered the talk about not keeping cell phones close to your chest with some neck chain
14:46 sw0rdfish or whatever
14:46 katsmeow-afk cell phone is a transmitter, a reciever isn't
14:46 sw0rdfish I see.
14:47 sw0rdfish so I guess i'll order it.
14:48 sw0rdfish give it a try... cuz I can't watch TV or anything at night if I wanted in order not to disturb the neighbor
14:48 sw0rdfish and am in desperate need of such a headset
14:49 katsmeow-afk why desperate? why not a pocket radio and ear buds?
14:49 sw0rdfish don't have those too, and this headset looks nice.
14:53 katsmeow-afk July 3, 2012 -
14:53 katsmeow-afk A mountain lion mauled a man inside his sleeping bag early Sunday morning
14:54 katsmeow-afk that is just too kinky, to have a mountain lion in your sleeping bag, sheesh
14:55 sw0rdfish lol dang!
15:15 sw0rdfish wow just watched the mountain lion video, katsmeow-afk
15:15 sw0rdfish http://abcnews.go.com/US/mountain-lion-attacks-man-63-california/story?id=16699470#.T_NPx7ShUz4
15:15 sw0rdfish sounds very rare
15:16 sw0rdfish "Clearly this is a very, very rare occurrence," Foy said. "You're more likely to be attacked by certainly a domestic dog or to be struck by lightning than you are to be attacked by a mountain lion."
15:31 delinquentme http://i.imgur.com/XkFVU.jpg
15:32 delinquentme is there a specific name for this kind of spring?
15:32 Tom_itx wavy washer
15:32 Tom_itx is that more than one?
15:33 Tom_itx a single one would be a 'wavy washer', at least that's what i call them
15:33 Tom_itx i've never seen them stacked
15:34 GuShH spring washer, wave washer.
15:34 GuShH even "wave spring washer"
15:35 GuShH delinquentme: is it from some power tool?
15:35 Tom_itx http://www.fastenal.com/web/search/product/fasteners/washers/wave-washers/_/Navigation?searchterm=&sortby=webrank&sortdir=descending&searchmode=&refine=~|categoryl1:%22600000%20Fasteners%22|~%20~|categoryl2:%22600089%20Washers%22|~%20~|categoryl3:%22600106%20Wave%20Washers%22|~
15:36 GuShH Tom_itx: they are characterized as eitehr single wave or triple wave.
15:36 Tom_itx i've only seen the single ones
15:36 GuShH because the three wave ones are not used in everything
15:37 Tom_itx we generally use split washers or 'star' for lock washers
15:37 GuShH they offer less compression but they can bare a bigger load
15:37 ShH sh
15:37 GuShH I'm more curious about what is it for, delinquentme!
15:37 delinquentme GuShH, its used in some lab tool
15:37 delinquentme for coaxial dampening
15:38 delinquentme like a pipe sliding inside a shaft
15:38 delinquentme shaft sliding inside a pipe *
15:38 Tom_itx yeah
15:38 ShH knows what the uses are, but didn't know what this particular one was being used
15:38 delinquentme installed in one of these http://www.gmi-inc.com/MJ-Research-PTC200-Thermo-Cycler.html
15:38 delinquentme =]
15:39 GuShH sadly a small hardware store will rarely carry these
15:39 delinquentme i've seen open source PCR machines and who knows how they're using that
15:39 GuShH online order or specialized place...
15:39 delinquentme maybe to spring the lid up ?
15:40 ShH needs to find a local dealer for air compressors, as the online offers are basically c
15:41 GuShH some dude wants $130 just to send the box to the bus stop, where it would be sent to the nearest terminal, where I'd have to pick it up.
15:41 GuShH >_<
15:44 GuShH sure it's a +50KG box, fairly big. but I'd rather get a local deal.
15:45 Tom_itx go to the air compressor factory and take a factory tour. on the way out they hand out free samples
15:46 GuShH haw haw
15:46 GuShH the most you'll get is a tshirt or a baseball cap with their logo, but previously you've paid them for the tour... which included the "gift"
15:46 GuShH that is the case with VW here, the tour sucks.
15:47 GuShH as does the breakfast, or what they happen to call breakfast.
15:47 ShH would rather have a hands-on tour with real souve
17:06 GuShH xarchaeos: fix your connection!
19:09 rue_mohr hahaha
20:20 rue_mohr oh I wonder what $1 I should get today
20:21 rue_mohr kat, thoughts?
20:31 katsmeow-afk i didn't look, been busy getting nothing done
20:32 Tom_itx rue_mohr is your pet rock still for sale on ebay?
20:32 Tom_itx you could buy that back
20:33 katsmeow-afk and if the rock works as advertised, you can give yourself 4 stars :-)
20:33 Tom_itx katsmeow-afk what did you not get done today?
20:34 katsmeow-afk i did NOT get the new pump installed, tho i did test it with water and some plumbing
20:34 Tom_itx you did get the pump though didn't you?
20:34 katsmeow-afk i did NOt get the water and electrical extended to the pool of water in the creek right below the house
20:34 katsmeow-afk yeas
20:35 Tom_itx well that's good
20:35 katsmeow-afk i did NOT get more dirt onto the roof, tho i did build more places for it to be up there
20:35 Tom_itx does the creek dry up completely?
20:35 Tom_itx or is there continuous flow just not alot..
20:36 katsmeow-afk i did NOT get the new address sign fastened permanently opn the gate, but it is up there (i gave you an url for it)
20:36 Tom_itx oh i missed that
20:37 katsmeow-afk it's flowing still up high were it's easiest to get at right now, but the pools tend to be peremnt directly below the house where i never got anything installed because the courts gave my land to the gods
20:37 Tom_itx i bet a netsplit cleared my buffer because i didn't see it
20:37 katsmeow-afk the stream that's 10ft wide and 2ft deep yr round is at the far corner, and i damn sure hope i am not here long enough to make plumbing that far economical
20:38 katsmeow-afk gave it again
20:38 katsmeow-afk i didn't debug the car's electrical, but i did note it once again is showing like it has a dead cell
20:44 Tom_itx i wish i could find one more db25 parallel cable
20:44 katsmeow-afk i wish you could also
20:45 Tom_itx i have some but either wrong gender or not full 25
20:45 Tom_itx i'll make do
20:45 katsmeow-afk i hate it when they use a db25 as a serial connector
20:46 Tom_itx i'm fairly happy with this mill setup now. just wish it was much bigger and heavier
20:46 katsmeow-afk heh
20:46 Tom_itx too bad that rusted out bridgeport sitting in your yard isn't here and working
20:47 katsmeow-afk get me a medium desktop mill, you can have whateevr is left of my bridgeport (but you'll need a complete gearhead for it, and it weighs a ton, not gonna ship it)
20:47 Tom_itx iirc you had one..
20:47 katsmeow-afk heh
20:47 Tom_itx gearhead is it?
20:47 katsmeow-afk missing the head
20:47 Tom_itx what about the x y screws? are they rusted?
20:48 katsmeow-afk haven't looked in years, they were heavily greased
20:48 Tom_itx ideally i'd replace them with ballscrews anyway
20:48 katsmeow-afk the slide for the up-down on the table is still greased
20:48 katsmeow-afk no table
20:49 Tom_itx what happened to the table?
20:49 katsmeow-afk this was essentially free, so it was ok to be a project to refurb it
20:49 katsmeow-afk but i cannot have the shop space to put it in, and i cannot put it on the boat, so it likely will be cut up as scrap
21:52 rue_mohr Triffid_Hunter, show and tell dude, lets see the printers!
21:53 rue_mohr Triffid_Hunter, poke poke
21:53 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: heh ok
21:53 rue_mohr :)
21:53 Triffid_Hunter https://picasaweb.google.com/114006544968779005866/Mendel
21:54 rue_mohr OOOOO
21:54 rue_mohr you sneaky ****** you bootstrapped it
21:55 katsmeow-afk nothing there?
21:55 rue_mohr https://plus.google.com/photos/114006544968779005866/albums/5409147241741240113?banner=pwa
21:55 katsmeow-afk blank google page
21:55 rue_mohr javascript
21:56 rue_mohr :S
21:56 rue_mohr 1mm pitch rod again eh?
21:57 rue_mohr Triffid_Hunter, how long it take?
21:58 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: to build? took me aages, 2yrs maybe
21:58 rue_mohr ugh
21:58 rue_mohr how did you get scaled part outlines?
21:58 Triffid_Hunter mostly because my budget was around $40/mo during construction phase
21:58 Tom_itx it's not one of maxbots for sure but how does his compare?
21:58 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: using blender. see the tutorial at rab3d.com, he tells how :)
21:59 rue_mohr what are you hacking a mouse for...
22:00 Triffid_Hunter Tom_itx: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/MR1TwlmRgBPcox4VThLw5NMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0 https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/2qP3SvrwWGQ88wNhhMrmCdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0 http://youtu.be/ndOzDB44NT8 <-- I'll let the results speak for themselves :)
22:00 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: can knock one over in a weekend these days if you get a good kit
22:01 rue_mohr without text, some of these images are.,.. interresing
22:02 rue_mohr what is the mouse encoder for?
22:02 Tom_itx Triffid_Hunter, i don't know much about reprap or max's except that he made a kit
22:02 katsmeow-afk you used weedwhacker line?
22:03 rue_mohr !? your head is made from a driver extension?!?
22:03 rue_mohr no...
22:04 rue_mohr I dont understand the heatsink, does it get too hot too easy?
22:05 rue_mohr god, no, your using TRIMMER LINE!
22:05 rue_mohr hahaha
22:05 rue_mohr SWEET
22:06 rue_mohr it didn't work?
22:06 rue_mohr Triffid_Hunter, hey, wake up :)
22:06 Triffid_Hunter katsmeow-afk: I tried it. turns out it stinks really bad and emits toxic gases
22:06 rue_mohr oh
22:07 katsmeow-afk i feel ashammed have done so little now
22:07 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: the mouse was an input device for me to test my stepper drivers with
22:07 rue_mohr aaaah
22:07 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: tell you what, hook the quadrature signal to the driver's step/dir with full microstepping and you get one hell of a reduction ratio and torque increase ;)
22:08 rue_mohr is your machine larger than average?
22:08 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: smaller than average actually
22:08 rue_mohr Triffid_Hunter, you didn't see my yt vid on that?
22:08 Triffid_Hunter print volume is only 160x190x80
22:08 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: on what? using encoders as input devices?
22:08 rue_mohr http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRF78fZiWuE&list=UUPqhe-f22nx8XkLW-CysxQw&index=2&feature=plcp
22:09 rue_mohr halogens are motor ballast resistors or bed heaters or both?
22:10 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: the light bulb is a 5v load for my supply, also a work light
22:10 rue_mohr aaah
22:10 rue_mohr you got 2 heads on it
22:10 Triffid_Hunter ATX supplies tend to flip out when you pull 16A on 12v and nothing else :)
22:10 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: just one bulb now.. did have two for a little while but it was unnecessary
22:11 rue_mohr green pulley broke?
22:14 rue_mohr haha fusing colours eh?
22:14 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: yep, got to the butterfly yet?
22:15 rue_mohr how long does it take to get over making new parts for the machine?
22:15 rue_mohr was that the one the corner kept lifting on?
22:15 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: about 6-9 months ;)
22:15 rue_mohr I hit the end, so
22:15 Triffid_Hunter naw all the pics of lifted corners are from when I'm printing ABS.. getting that stuff to stick gives me heaps of trouble, but apparently others don't have problems with it
22:15 rue_mohr ah, that wasn't 2 heads?
22:16 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: no only got one extruder on there
22:16 rue_mohr tell me about filament suppliers
22:16 katsmeow-afk so when can we start ordering gears and sprockets to our specs?
22:16 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/urHU3smirY3ySinscZ8Ac9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0
22:16 rue_mohr yea
22:16 Triffid_Hunter katsmeow-afk: now, although note that we can't print super tiny teeth
22:17 katsmeow-afk "we" ?
22:17 Triffid_Hunter katsmeow-afk: I'm a member of the burgeoning reprap community :)
22:17 katsmeow-afk oh, i thought you made that machine
22:17 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: kthx, the reprap bot knows all that sort of stuff
22:17 rue_mohr good stuff Triffid_Hunter
22:17 Triffid_Hunter katsmeow-afk: yeah I did but it's not entirely my own design
22:17 rue_mohr how long you had it now?
22:18 tsmeow-afk loops back to the original queston
22:18 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: PLA is around $35/kg, ABS is a bit cheaper in my corner of the world
22:18 tsmeow-afk gives up instead, being too t
22:18 katsmeow-afk why is Tiggr looking up "acetly coenzyme cholesterol" and what is it?
22:18 Triffid_Hunter katsmeow-afk: mine's not different enough from other repraps that it has any capabilities that other printers do not
22:19 rue_mohr prolyl tuned better
22:19 Triffid_Hunter katsmeow-afk: so if I can print something, other reprappers can also print it
22:19 katsmeow-afk Triffid_Hunter, the point is: i know of *no one* making the gears i would seek
22:19 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: heh yeah I get a lot of comments over my print quality, so that may well be :)
22:20 rue_mohr pla... poly
22:20 Triffid_Hunter katsmeow-afk: well if the pitch is more than 2mm or so and it has more than around 10 teeth and the outer diameter is less than 200mm (150mm for my printer) we should be able to print it
22:20 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: poly lactic acid, made from starch
22:20 rue_mohr st....
22:20 Triffid_Hunter very hard plastic, holds a good edge, works well for bushings. goes soft at 60c though
22:20 katsmeow-afk rice?
22:21 Triffid_Hunter when we need a bit more heat tolerance, we use ABS which is good to 105c but isn't as hard
22:21 Triffid_Hunter strength of both is similar
22:21 Triffid_Hunter katsmeow-afk: can be made from most serial grains, corn is common since they grow so much of it in the states
22:21 katsmeow-afk see rue, if you could cast aluminum, and send to Tom for finishing,,, i forget
22:22 tsmeow-afk
22:22 Triffid_Hunter katsmeow-afk: natural PLA burns out cleanly so it's perfect for casting
22:22 katsmeow-afk i used rice glue sometimes, it's non-acidic
22:22 Triffid_Hunter no need for wax intermediate :)
22:22 Tom_itx if he could control the alloy it would help
22:27 tsmeow-afk pondes
22:27 katsmeow-afk eg
22:27 katsmeow-afk don't worry, that's only permatex on my fingers
22:31 The_jester rue : im am here
22:33 Triffid_Hunter rue_mohr: you in the market for a printer? should check out all the printed R/C cars and robotic hands on thingiverse.com
22:33 Tom_itx Triffid_Hunter what do you know about max's printer?
22:34 Tom_itx i haven't followed progress on any of them
22:35 The_jester Rue and I were talking printers earlier, sounds like we are going to put one together
22:35 Tom_itx Triffid_Hunter, do they use the gcode subset for x y coords?
22:39 Triffid_Hunter Tom_itx: yes
22:39 The_jester BTW, Greets to Tom
22:40 Triffid_Hunter Tom_itx: see reprap.org/wiki/G-codes or something like that for the reprap set
22:40 e_jester is now computing in style Pc + 42" plasma + wireless keyboard/m
22:40 Tom_itx using an avr for control?
22:40 Triffid_Hunter Tom_itx: they've totally rewritten what G28 does, left out a ton of others and created a whole new set specifically for printers so it looks like gcode but isn't gonna work on anything else
22:41 Tom_itx what's their G28 do beside go home?
22:41 Triffid_Hunter Tom_itx: I'm working with the company that max has joined
22:41 Triffid_Hunter Tom_itx: G28 = find home using endstops and set position to 0
22:42 Tom_itx normally it's machine home
22:43 Triffid_Hunter yeah I know what it normally is, I implemented it that way in teacup at first but eventually bowed to peer pressure from other firmwares and hostwares that insisted on the improper usage
22:43 Tom_itx heh
22:44 Tom_itx what do they use for work offsets or do they use them?
22:44 Triffid_Hunter no work offsets
22:44 Triffid_Hunter but they're gonna have to implement them for proper multi-extruder support
22:44 Tom_itx yup
22:45 Triffid_Hunter no need for a work offset when you start with an empty bed and build the object up from nothing :)
22:45 Tom_itx which will likely interfere with their interpretation of G28
22:45 rrywolf curls up next to katsmeow-afk and yawns, being too exhausted from working all day to do anything us
22:45 Triffid_Hunter Tom_itx: not at all, G28 is find 0 using endstops, offset is applied on top of that
22:45 Triffid_Hunter can use G1 X0Y0Z0 to actually move to current home
22:46 Tom_itx no but your model has the same offsets and if you plan more than one at once you would need them
22:46 Triffid_Hunter the slicer handles multiples
22:47 Tom_itx is your control an avr?
22:47 Triffid_Hunter I actually wrote a crude algorithm that slic3r now uses to position multiples. I hope they replace it soon, it assumes that everything is a rectangle as large as the largest item!
22:47 Triffid_Hunter Tom_itx: yes
22:47 Tom_itx 328?
22:47 Tom_itx or bigger?
22:47 Triffid_Hunter Tom_itx: mostly mega1280 or mega2560 but there's a lot of '644s around too. the 328 is too skinny on flash and ram
22:47 Triffid_Hunter but can be made to work in a pinch
22:47 Tom_itx yeah
22:47 Tom_itx i figured it would take more
22:48 Tom_itx he wanted me to make a control board for that arm but i never heard back from him
22:48 Triffid_Hunter Tom_itx: there's lots of cortex-m3 boards starting to spring up now
22:48 Tom_itx they're cheap
22:49 Tom_itx the pi would probably be a good candidate
22:50 Triffid_Hunter Tom_itx: nope, pi and similar suck at the hard realtime task of step pulse generation
22:51 Triffid_Hunter really need something like a beaglebone or a pi /and/ an avr in cahoots, so the application processor can do high level stuff and the small processor can do the hard realtime stuff that they're fantastic for
22:51 Tom_itx does anybody use linuxcnc for it?
22:52 Triffid_Hunter Tom_itx: I've heard that quite a few do. the tricky part with using that is hooking up the heaters and thermistors, I hear they mostly end up using an arduino with standard reprap firmware and hack up emc2 to on-feed gcodes it doesn't recognise
22:55 Tom_itx time for sleep here
23:45 katsmeow-afk if i were smart, i'd be asleep now too
23:46 rrywolf tucks katsmeow-afk in, then curls up on top of her to make sure she stays in bed, as well as helping her sleep by being soft and fl
23:47 katsmeow-afk and just the right weight?
23:48 furrywolf and warm and pettable, too.
23:49 tsmeow-afk pets slee
23:49 furrywolf :)
