07:50 katsmeow-afk WHAT ¿!?¡¿!?¡¿!?¡¿!?¡¿!?¡¿!?¡¿!?¡¿!?¡¿!?¡¿!?¡
08:46 sw0rdfish :o
09:05 rue_mohr I got a metric tap and die set!
09:05 rue_mohr the 3d printers almost all seem to use metric threaded rod
09:06 rue_mohr might explian why they are ~$1000/kit
09:16 katsmeow-afk so use usa/imperial/inch rod instead of buying a metric kit?
09:20 rue_mohr http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/397592_418010338242498_1881339436_n.jpg
09:21 rue_mohr I bought the kit to hve one
09:21 rue_mohr I know how to do the math to use imperial rod
09:23 katsmeow-afk k
09:24 katsmeow-afk heh
09:24 katsmeow-afk i thought peple were supposed to *act* grown up, not *be* grown up
12:24 katsmeow-afk 100 x MMBTA42 TRANSISTOR NPN 300V 0.5A SOT-23-3 SMD
12:25 katsmeow-afk $3 + $2 s&h
12:26 katsmeow-afk same deal on the complementary transistor, the MMBTA92
12:27 GuShH ok?
12:27 ShH pictures katsmeow-afk as a parts hoa
12:27 katsmeow-afk hmm, same part in a to-92 case, the MPSA42 and 92, is actually *cheaper*
12:28 GuShH yes, that smt is cheaper is often a lie.
12:28 Tom_itx add in the board realestate too
12:29 katsmeow-afk well, it's a 300v 500ma npn-pnp pair, for fairly cheap from everyone, so i thought i'd mention it
12:29 Tom_itx yep
12:30 katsmeow-afk a while back i picked up a reel of KSP42, which is a MPSA42, for like $10
12:31 katsmeow-afk it's a 50Mhz transistsor too
12:31 GuShH that's low
12:31 GuShH have you used them?
12:31 katsmeow-afk not for audo and h-bridge divers, not at 3000 for $10
12:32 katsmeow-afk i have not use any from this batch, no
12:32 GuShH you have a hoarding issue!
12:32 katsmeow-afk it was $10
12:32 GuShH This is hoarding.
12:32 katsmeow-afk how is having a good part on hand for an exelent price "hoarding" ? because you didn't get any?
12:33 GuShH because you never use them
12:33 katsmeow-afk i didn't say i never use them
12:33 GuShH do you also save food wrappers in case you'll need them?
12:33 GuShH I know you don't use them
12:33 katsmeow-afk i have used them before, it's how i know i wanted to keep them on hand
12:34 katsmeow-afk i swear i should stop talking to you, i can't say anything right some days
12:34 GuShH right?
12:34 GuShH you don't have to please me or anyone
12:35 GuShH katsmeow-afk: I just think you keep spending money on things you don't need
12:35 GuShH But maybe that's your hobby
12:36 katsmeow-afk ok, you took enough turns in that logic
12:37 GuShH Whatever that means.
12:38 katsmeow-afk means i cannot mention any good deals i see on ebay again, because you think i am buying that item and hoarding it
12:38 GuShH katsmeow-afk: of course you should mention whatever you want.
12:39 GuShH katsmeow-afk: a) doesn't really matter what I think b) you can do whatever you want c) I still think you have a hoarding problem though
12:40 GuShH but at least it's components, not diapers.
12:40 katsmeow-afk well, i am damned sorry i tried being helpful by pointing out good deals
12:41 GuShH katsmeow-afk: you should be on top of me, not the other way around.
12:41 katsmeow-afk what?
12:42 GuShH uh, take charge and be less submissive.
12:43 ShH nudges katsmeow
12:43 katsmeow-afk oh, use arrogant sounding sexual phrases in capital letters?
12:43 GuShH not really
12:44 katsmeow-afk i am not here to fight or take charge, you see no @ on my nick, and if you wanna ruin my knack of finding the least pricey stuff for the folks here, it's your call
12:46 GuShH katsmeow-afk: it's not about fighting, it's just that whether I mention something or not it shouldn't matter that much to you, why would anything I say affect what you can and can't do?
12:47 GuShH and you should be an op, and not all ops are assholes.
13:05 myself Woo, cheap transistors!
13:47 rrywolf is perfectly happy with katsmeow-afk pasting good d
13:57 GuShH_ furrywolf: I don't have a problem with that, or anything about it. I just think theres a hoarding issue and it may be problematic if money is short on her end, that's all.
13:58 GuShH_ but anyone is entitled to do whatever they want, which is pretty much why I can comment on it and the other person can decide to answer or ignore it.
13:59 furrywolf having parts on hand makes you a lot more productive... projects take a really long time if you wait a week every time you find you need a new part.
14:01 GuShH_ furrywolf: surely you'd agree most of those parts will never see a use, because they were bought on impulse "oh look, cheap" instead of neccesity
14:02 furrywolf but you never know which ones you'll need. :P
14:03 GuShH_ I'm not really discussing that anyway, I'm just pointing out my observation on the matter.
14:04 furrywolf I'll probably never use half my parts... but I don't know which half. :P
14:05 GuShH_ lol
14:05 GuShH_ I think katsmeow-afk is annoyed with me now.
14:05 furrywolf you make it easy to be annoyed with you. you encourage it, in fact.
14:06 GuShH_ It's not my fault
14:06 GuShH_ Sometimes I phrase things the wrong way around
14:10 myself I'll never use 90% of the parts I have on-hand, but I've still paid less for them than I would by ordering piecemeal, because I've combined shipping on the majority of them.
14:19 furrywolf that's changing with shipping from china... somehow it costs them ten cents to ship something overseas, while it would cost me $6 to mail it down the block.
14:20 GuShH_ heh
14:20 GuShH_ they gotta have some subsidy or something
14:20 GuShH_ to promote export
14:21 myself I figure.
14:21 furrywolf I think priority mail starts at $5.95 after the last bout of rate increases... and I can purchase things from china at $0.49 with free shipping, and they still make money.
14:21 myself Wonder when our governments will crack down on that.
14:22 GuShH_ EU has some subsidies for local shipping
14:22 GuShH_ at least in Germany
14:22 GuShH_ doesn't cost too much to ship out massive boxes.
14:23 furrywolf I fixed my roof vent yesterday... six pop rivets later, it's 20 degrees cooler in here. yay!
14:23 ShH_ hasn't fixed the float switch on his tank
14:23 GuShH_ I did get up to the tower to inspect it though
14:23 GuShH_ really nice view up there, I should bring the camera next time
14:23 GuShH_ make a 360° shot
14:24 myself tank?
14:24 GuShH_ water
14:25 GuShH_ I'd say cistern but those are usually underground
14:25 myself oh neat, you have an elevated tank? for pressure?
14:25 GuShH_ yes
14:25 myself I have no idea how things are done over wherever you are. I'm on municipal water supply. :)
14:26 GuShH_ even municipal water here doesn't have the right pressure for every day use
14:26 GuShH_ you need to elevate it anyway
14:26 GuShH_ they have good mains pressure at downtown only.
14:26 GuShH_ and they still elevate it in all the buildings I've seen
14:26 myself so you have a booster pump? controlled by that float switch?
14:26 GuShH_ yep
14:26 furrywolf I have a ground-level tank, pressure pump, and bladder tank.
14:27 myself yeah, bladder tanks are the norm on well systems here.
14:27 GuShH_ since the float is gone the switch got stuck in closed state, and if I leave the pump on it will overflow
14:27 GuShH_ I bought a new switch but I think I won't have to replace the old one, assuming I can take it apart, clean the contacts and attach a new floater thingy
14:27 furrywolf that's a lot better than being stuck off, and finding out about it when your shower stops right as you're covered in soap....
14:27 GuShH_ lol
14:28 GuShH_ it may have been hard-wired, I haven't inspected it yet
14:28 GuShH_ but the lever arm is at the low position, so that's "on"
14:28 GuShH_ and having no surface area to float on it's own, it would remain so even with water overflowing.
14:28 furrywolf I had city water at the last place I lived at, and it did that to me once.
14:29 furrywolf they couldn't afford a proper backup generator system, so if the power went out, the water went out too, until one of the three employees drove up there and connected the little gas-powered honda pump...
14:29 GuShH_ lol
14:31 GuShH_ the tank is pretty much 4 storeys high and all you have to get up there are small access ladders. I should in fact be wearing a harness when I get up there.
14:32 GuShH_ But assuming it's a dry day and you keep 3 contact points at all times, it's relatively safe.
14:32 furrywolf or just don't fall. :P
14:32 GuShH_ The steel doesn't show signs of corrosion, but theres some rust build-up so I'll have to paint the ladders some day soon.
14:33 GuShH_ It's very dry up there, lots of wind and no humidity
14:33 furrywolf gah, one of my previous jobs involved going on roofs... one of the bits during training was that osha required us to wear harnesses, but they made us slower, so while we could wear one if we wanted, we'd be less productive than other employees, and promptly replaced.
14:33 GuShH_ don't get me started on roof guys
14:33 GuShH_ roofing assholes.
14:33 furrywolf "you're required to wear one, but we'll fire you if you do." was the gist of it.
14:34 GuShH_ I had them quote me 5.000 on a repair, then had another guy quote me 2.800, which I accepted, but only to find out he kept trying to get more and more money out of my pocket so I told them to go away and it pretty much ended in a fight.
14:34 GuShH_ I was going to do it myself but I figured I'd let the "pros" do it right
14:35 furrywolf I never have other people do things I can do myself.
14:35 furrywolf it costs less and gets done better.
14:35 furrywolf other people don't care about your property, just getting your money.
14:36 furrywolf although I might start taking my car in for oil changes. my boss has a fleet account, and gets $15 oil changes, while it's $20 just to buy four quarts of oil these days...
14:37 GuShH_ I don't have experience with roofs
14:37 furrywolf nor do I, but I'd still do it myself if I needed to. :)
14:37 GuShH_ I was going to
14:37 GuShH_ in fact I could've bought all supplies for less money
14:37 GuShH_ But then theres the fact of falling and cracking your skull open, even if you are following all the rules.
14:37 furrywolf meh, I've been on ~1000 roofs, still haven't died. :)
14:37 GuShH_ Anyway now I need to either do it myself or find another guy and possibly face the same faith
14:38 GuShH_ I don't even have wooden ladders...
14:38 furrywolf ask friends/neighbors for recommendations
14:38 GuShH_ don't know anyone around here.
14:38 GuShH_ only a realestate agent and they're worse than snakes.
14:38 furrywolf hence why I said /neighbors, in case you didn't have friends.
14:38 GuShH_ lol.
14:38 GuShH_ I don't know any neighbours, is what I said.
14:39 GuShH_ and don't have any friends nearby either, I moved recently.
14:39 furrywolf time to meet them. :P
14:39 GuShH_ I've waved hello, that's about it.
14:39 GuShH_ when I first got here someone came to say hi, no in fact they wanted me to hire them, it wasn't a hello.
14:40 GuShH_ the house across the street has some silly "security features"
14:40 GuShH_ I don't even think it's a good idea to meet them.
14:40 GuShH_ They even put an electrified fence, which I find ridiculous since a jumper cable to ground is all you need to disable them, either that or insulated pliers.
14:41 GuShH_ I think the only reason they have one is because of pure ignorance.
14:41 GuShH_ (the thing should be floating, but you could still short it across it's other terminal...)
14:41 furrywolf electric fences are never floating. they have very large grounds, in fact.
14:42 GuShH_ (and if the whole premise is that if you touch any of the conductors, you get a shock, then shorting it to ground is all you gotta do)
14:42 furrywolf yes, that is the whole premise. :)
14:42 GuShH_ that said, cut the conductor and it's gone.
14:42 GuShH_ they have 4 of them with ceramic insulators
14:42 GuShH_ and a bunch of cameras.
14:43 GuShH_ you can smell the paranoia across the street
14:43 furrywolf now, if they were being fancy, they could build a time domain reflectometer into the charger, and monitor for breaks, shorts, etc, with the exact distance to them...
14:43 GuShH_ (even then they have a blind spot, which would allow any half idiot to get in)
14:43 GuShH_ you could do it a lot easier with a dummy load and a current monitor
14:44 furrywolf proper terminiation exceeds most theive's skills.
14:45 GuShH_ well if you want to get in, and are willing to use a gun... just wait for someone to go in or out of the building.
14:45 GuShH_ I will install cameras, but I don't see the point in electric fences.
14:45 GuShH_ and not for peace of mind, which is what most people buy - they aren't buying security since it doesn't exist.
14:46 furrywolf so... growing/manufacturing drugs? paranoid survivalists?
14:46 GuShH_ I just need a way to monitor in case of noises
14:46 GuShH_ furrywolf: rich people.
14:47 GuShH_ I'd say there are more chances of them getting robbed than anyone else around
14:47 GuShH_ because by building tall walls with electrified fences and cameras, you are asking for it.
14:47 GuShH_ But come to think of it, the fence may work against the ocassional thief that thinks he can just jump the wall
14:48 GuShH_ it may even work the other way around by preventing someone who is already inside to escape easily
14:48 GuShH_ and last but not least, it may just be a decoy and there is no HV involved.
14:49 GuShH_ such as some cameras could be dummies.
16:03 Gyndawyr hey guys I'm new to electronics but I studied it for A-level. I'd like to start my first independent project... any ideas what sort of thing I should make?
16:08 myself A thing you need.
16:10 myself Make me a circuit that I can clamp around the power cord for my clothes-washer, and when the machine stops drawing current for more than a few minutes, the cycle must be completed, so an alarm sould begin sounding to remind me to come get the clothes. Currently all that happens is the machine goes silent, and I'm bad at noticing silence. I guess the device could work with a microphone and notice silence, too. :)
16:11 Gyndawyr That's not a robot :(
16:12 Gyndawyr I already made an alarm system that scares away delinquent youths from my lawn. I want something "robotic" specifically to make.
16:12 GuShH_ myself: just open it up and add a buzzer
16:20 myself Well you asked for a "sort of thing". That's a thing.
16:23 Gyndawyr I'm probably going to make a little robot that can move around my garden, has sensors to detect stuff in front of it, turns 90* and goes another direction..
16:24 Gyndawyr but I don't know what purpose it would have. Just bearing in mind I'm a noob though.
16:32 ace4016 as a beginner's project, it doesn't have to have a purpose :P
16:32 ace4016 but you can have it try to find things through the grass
16:32 ace4016 like balls, or tags, or acorns/pine cones
16:34 Gyndawyr how would it have a finding system?
16:42 Tom_itx you are the designer
16:43 Tom_itx you could have it taze any garden predators
16:43 Gyndawyr that'd be funny, but it needs to distinguish between things...
16:44 Gyndawyr I've never done something like that before
16:44 Tom_itx yeah it would, you wouldn't wanna get tazed now would you

21:03 katsmeow-afk 1957 – “Artificial Muscle” – Joseph Laws McKibben (American)
21:03 katsmeow-afk Joe McKibben talks about his invention:
21:03 katsmeow-afk More Help For Polio Victims
21:03 katsmeow-afk To bring motion to his little daughter's polio-paralyzed hands, Dr. Joseph Laws McKibben, an atomic physicist at Los Alamos, N.M., has developed a new mechanical "muscle" which some day may help thousands of other paralyzed fingers to move, to grasp, even to write.
21:04 katsmeow-afk The device, a simple nylon tube, powered by bottled carbon-dioxide gas, was demonstrated for the first time at a conference on human disability.
21:04 katsmeow-afk Dr. McKibben, 46, is the physicist who triggered the first atomic-bomb test thirteen years
21:04 katsmeow-afk ago at Alamogordo.
21:05 katsmeow-afk As it stands now, the "muscle" is a small, rubber-lined plastic tube which lies along the paralyzed forearm and is fitted by a moving splint to the thumb and first and second fingers. When a lever is touched, gas from a 14-inch cylinder flows into the tube, causing a contracting motion, drawing the paralyzed fingers together When the lever Is touched again, the plastic tube is deflated and the fingers relax.
21:05 katsmeow-afk announced that they would launch a crash research program in the hope that McKibben's invention will soon be adapted to move both paralyzed shoulders and elbows. The same theory, said Dr. Landauer, may be applicable to artificial limbs and to arms and legs that are weakened, but not paralyzed
21:06 katsmeow-afk When perfected, the gadget will cost less than $100. — From NEWSWEEK.
21:06 katsmeow-afk [Source: The Buckingham Post - Mar 21, 1958 - Originally from Newsweek (date unknown).]
21:06 katsmeow-afk 1958 , people .... what have you done lately?
21:07 ace4016 that's $844.91 in todays money
21:07 ace4016 $100 then is not $100 now :P
21:08 katsmeow-afk right, and rubber tube is sooooooooooo pricey now
21:10 ace4016 i don't think rubber tubing is the priciest part of that
21:12 katsmeow-afk rue built several air muscle devices , and in total he didn't spend $100 in today's money
21:14 e4016
21:42 rue_mohr less than $20 for that matter
21:43 rue_mohr what are we comparing to?
21:45 ferdna guys... a friend of mine wants to make a lg retinal scanner with lab view
21:45 ferdna how viable is this?
21:45 ferdna i recommended him to use a real programming language...
21:50 katsmeow-afk i recommend he use a camera
21:51 katsmeow-afk rue, scroll up : [Source: The Buckingham Post - Mar 21, 1958 - Originally from Newsweek (date unknown).]
21:51 ferdna katsmeow-afk, a camera? like a web cam? as a retinal scanner?
21:51 ferdna i doubt the cam will give enough detail
21:51 ferdna besides that the retinal scanner has laser no?
21:51 katsmeow-afk i am not sure, but i think the daughter mentioned in the article that he fitted the air muscle for is now a PHD in something in California somewhere
21:52 katsmeow-afk a white light in a narrow beam shining in thru the iris can light the retina very well, but you can use a laser too
21:56 rue_mohr a lser is esp good at making sure the eye is only usable as a key
21:56 ferdna katsmeow-afk, thats referent to the hardware... what he wants to do is use that lg scanner with lab view
21:57 ferdna i believe lab view is crap
21:57 rue_mohr whats labview?
21:58 katsmeow-afk i do not use labview, i have no data on it
21:58 ferdna rue_mohr, http://www.ni.com/labview/whatis/
21:58 ferdna http://zone.ni.com/wv/app/doc/p/id/wv-1344/upvisited/y
21:59 ferdna rue_mohr, http://lmgtfy.com/?q=whats+labview%3F
22:01 rue_mohr so labview is an artificial environment you can use to make things that only work there instead of creating things in the real world that work in the real world
22:02 ferdna rue_mohr, that seems confusing... but i will just agree to that... to avoid any unwanted discussion. =P
22:02 rue_mohr simulators: environments where you make things that only work in simulators
22:07 ferdna rue_mohr, yeah...
22:07 rue_mohr you still dont get it :(
22:36 ferdna rue_mohr, yes i do... just like electrical software simulators...
22:36 katsmeow-afk if you build in simulator, you do not have a real thing working in the real world
22:37 katsmeow-afk if i build a drill on POV, i cannot use that drill in the real world
22:37 ferdna yea like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_circuit_simulation
22:38 tsmeow-afk points ferdna to
