07:40 AM mrec: I have found an old rotary table in that shop in Taiwan, it seems like the tolerances are quite good but it's a manual one. I can add some worm gear reducer at the side of it, can anyone recommend what I can use as brake?
07:55 AM mrec: it's a rotary / tilting table
08:24 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> there are brakes you can get to put inline with the stepper/servo.. Would that work?
09:06 AM rdtsc-w: The stepper/servo, depending on driver details, will also try to keep the shaft stationary while enabled and stationary. can't imagine much torque would be required on a worm-gear; mitigating slop would be critical though.
09:06 AM mrec: for the tilting axis yes for the rotary axis no because it goes through an inaccessible gear (attached to a wormgear)
09:07 AM mrec: a pneumatic/oil cylinder like on the spindle would be nice but those are big
09:23 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> actually locking the axis would be better
09:33 AM mrec: I think so... well ok I will lock it manually at the beginnign
11:29 AM JT-Shop: made in usa shelves that have 25/64 nuts for 1/4-20...
11:36 AM * roycroft is now on his spiffy new vps, looks around, and sees all is well
11:38 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Who did you go with?
11:39 AM roycroft: interserver
11:40 AM roycroft: i've had vps with them for years
11:40 AM roycroft: i needed more storage, and they have some "storage" vps for a really good price
11:40 AM roycroft: basically, their "linux slice" vps have very little disk (30GB/slice) but it's ssd
11:41 AM roycroft: their storage vps are the same price, but have 1TB/slice, but with spinning platters
11:41 AM roycroft: i'm fine with that
11:41 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> neat
11:41 AM roycroft: i back up to wasabi buckets with my vps, so if the whole thing dies i still have my data
11:42 AM roycroft: when i put my billing/payment/ordering system on the public internet i'll go for something more reliable, but i'll be generating enough revenue from it to afford that
11:42 AM roycroft: right now i'm in contraction mode - cutting out all unnecessary expenses
11:43 AM roycroft: and getting ready for future expansion mode
11:44 AM roycroft: conventional wisdom says that one should have three network and geographically dispersed dns servers - that wisdom going back to the early days of dns in the '80s
11:44 AM roycroft: and i've always had that
11:44 AM roycroft: but i see so many fairly large hosting services only use two dns servers
11:45 AM roycroft: the more stupid ones with both servers on the same network
11:45 AM roycroft: i'm not an idiot and would never put all my dns servers on the same network, but i am thinking about cutting down from three to two
11:45 AM roycroft: that would save the cost of a vps that is used ust for dns
11:48 AM rdtsc-w: instead of wasabi buckets, maybe they should be called egg baskets
11:56 AM roycroft: no, that would not be accurate
11:57 AM roycroft: wasabi buckets are cheap - much cheaper than amazon s3 buckets
11:57 AM roycroft: eggs are very expensive
12:11 PM rdtsc-w: but you never keep all of your eggs in one basket
12:13 PM bjorkintosh: you don't?
12:13 PM bjorkintosh: it's inconvenient not to.
12:18 PM roycroft: i always make sure i have a dns server not in the usa
12:19 PM roycroft: i think that's critical these days, as one never knows when the government is going to take over random things and trash them
12:19 PM bjorkintosh: that's pretty sad.
12:20 PM bjorkintosh: I wish it weren't so.
12:27 PM roycroft: it's been my practice for decades - well before the current regime - but it seems especially prudent in these times
02:01 PM rdtsc-w: Oligarchian despersion?
02:42 PM roycroft: resilience is prudent
02:49 PM * roycroft is currently waiting for centurylink to arrive
02:50 PM roycroft: they have a drop strung straight across my property to my next door neighbor's house that is almost touching my shop roof
02:50 PM roycroft: they claim they have an easement that allows them to do that, but cannot produce it
02:50 PM roycroft: and my title insurance company says that they do not
02:51 PM roycroft: i'm trying the "nice cable you have up there. it would be a shame if anything happened to it" strategy
02:51 PM roycroft: which caused them to dispatch
02:52 PM roycroft: and while i would not intentionally damage it, there's a serious chance that when i rebuild the roof something might happen to it
02:53 PM xxcoder: its a risk to you too
02:53 PM roycroft: at the very least, since i'll be raising the roof peak, it won't be almost touching my roof - it will be laying on my roof
02:53 PM roycroft: i can handle low voltage, even if the drop is active and the neighbor's phone rings while i'm working on things
02:53 PM roycroft: it would be a trip/strangulation hazard, though
02:53 PM xxcoder: sure what I meant is tangling, or whatever
02:54 PM xxcoder: exactly
02:54 PM roycroft: i don't even know if it's in use
02:54 PM roycroft: and i can't ask the neighbors - they are both in hospital
02:54 PM Tom_L: cut it and find out
02:55 PM roycroft: even if it's not legally there, i can't legally cut it
02:55 PM roycroft: it is centurylink property
02:55 PM Tom_L: woops my chain saw slipped
02:56 PM roycroft: and if it is active, and i were to cut it i would be denying 911 calling ability to my neighbors (whenever they come back home)
02:56 PM roycroft: i'm going to go through channels on this
02:56 PM roycroft: their failure to produce evidence of an easement tells me i'll get it moved
02:56 PM xxcoder: yeah I wouldnt do something to chance people dying. unable to call 911 is one of emk
02:57 PM roycroft: i don't want this to turn into a fight with my neighbors
02:57 PM roycroft: i'm certain they are not the ones who told centurylink (probably us west or even pacific northwest bell) to route the drop that way
02:58 PM roycroft: there's a pole with centurylink space adjoining their property
02:58 PM roycroft: centurylink just need to bring a drop to their house from that pole and splice it in
02:58 PM roycroft: or remove the drop if it's not being used
02:59 PM roycroft: i'm doing this now to give centurylink plenty of time to deal with it - i don't expect to start work on the roof until mid july at the soonest
03:20 PM rdtsc-w: of 2026?
03:20 PM rdtsc-w: you know how slow business is
03:45 PM roycroft: july of this year is the soonest I would do the roofing job
03:45 PM roycroft: i do hope to do it this year, though
03:46 PM JT-Shop: roofing in july now that's hot
03:46 PM roycroft: yes
03:46 PM roycroft: but i need to do it when there is no chance of rain
03:46 PM roycroft: my shop is full of stuff
03:46 PM roycroft: and it will have no roof for a while
03:46 PM JT-Shop: october is the best month here
03:47 PM JT-Shop: you still raising the roof?
03:49 PM xxcoder: here summers is almost free of rain. it very rarely rain
03:49 PM xxcoder: used to be not the case, would get rain once a week average
04:06 PM bjorkintosh: good news. the venus probe landed in the ocean, where it is no doubt going to be swallowed by a giant shell.
04:28 PM JT-Shop: I was told a giant squid swallowed it
04:33 PM xxcoder: well we will look forward to squid cybermonster, from fusion of big squid and probe
04:37 PM bjorkintosh: hahahahaha
04:45 PM xxcoder: hopefully godzilla can stop that one
04:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/E3dXUkKcDxKDC1oz9
04:54 PM Tom_L: still as dirty as it was
04:57 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Lol. Carwash in the future
04:57 PM Tom_L: wonder what will show up tonight, had a water moccasin last night
04:58 PM Tom_L: there is evidence of a crime in the drive too
04:59 PM JT-Shop: wow
04:59 PM Tom_L: guessing ~3.5-4'
05:00 PM Tom_L: i didn't ask it to pose for a measurement
06:34 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> unplugged the power to the antenna.. Starting to storm here
06:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> pouring here
06:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> starlink is still up. knock on wood
06:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> under really heavy rain - it will sometimes go down.
06:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> usually not more than 15 minutes
06:52 PM rdtsc: SW considered getting a new hood?
06:53 PM rdtsc: might be able to find one at a junk yard for cheap
06:56 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> that is from a junk yard.
06:56 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol
06:56 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the wone that was on it was bent up
06:56 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> one
06:57 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/QheQxs4ypEcpW7QL8
06:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it is mainly just dirty. There are a few scratches on it. but - the car has paid for itself by now. I got from the insurence company what I hand into it initally fixing it up.
06:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Plus I got a few years out of it so far - and it should be good for another 5+ years - knock on wood again
08:18 PM roycroft: i'm back from pt
08:18 PM roycroft: the bppv is in both ears, and it's being stubborn - i'm much improved, but we're going to need another session or two to fix it
09:50 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> dammit, these tiny yaskawa servos are so cool, with their tiny giant encoders and tiny brakes
09:50 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> but now i gotta make so many fancy servo cables with fancy connectors
09:50 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> and figure out how to tune them using a personal computer
09:50 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> with another semi fancy cable
09:51 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> just got the drivers today and reailsed ive no idea how to tune these sigma II over rs232
10:07 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> ill probably just trick the kid at work into doing it "oh man these tiny servos are so cool, too bad computers are hard" he will eat that shit up
10:33 PM roycroft: i use the same cable for all my rs232 needs
10:33 PM roycroft: many years (decades) ago i came up with a clever way to make "universal" rs-232 connections
10:34 PM roycroft: i use cat5 (cat3 would do) cable with rj45 connectors on each end - the cable is straight through, i.e. pin 1 to pin 1, etc.
10:34 PM roycroft: on the ends i use d-sub to rj45 adapters, with the signals consistent on the rj45 side
10:35 PM roycroft: for standard connections i make both dte and dce adapters in both de-9 and db-25, male and femal for each
10:36 PM roycroft: that's my standard kit, then i make special adapters for things with proprietary pinouts like some of the dslams we used to use, adc atm gear, etc.
10:38 PM roycroft: and i should say "made", not "make"
10:39 PM roycroft: i haven't had to make an adapter in probably 20 years
11:02 PM xxcoder: just got a domain. fun lol
11:02 PM xxcoder: cheapest possible of course
11:03 PM roycroft: i've been purging many of mine
11:03 PM roycroft: i still own about 30 or so, but i've let probably 20 expire in the last couple years
11:03 PM roycroft: and i've sold some domains off that i had owned for a long time
11:04 PM xxcoder: yeah we let one expire 4 years ago, I got one for trmnl image hosting
11:05 PM roycroft: i never bought any domains on spec, but i did sell one for well into 5 figures that i registered for a project that did not work out
11:05 PM xxcoder: its why its as cheap as possible, because it wont be public for most people
11:05 PM roycroft: the funny thing is, the domain has never been active since i sold it, but it's still registered
11:05 PM xxcoder: odd
11:05 PM roycroft: so whoever bought it must have had a project that did not work out as well
11:06 PM xxcoder: I guess either still trying, or trying to sell it for similiar amount to reclaim money
11:07 PM roycroft: i'm just getting tired of that whole business
11:11 PM xxcoder: yeah? ok
11:12 PM roycroft: anyway, registering domains for immediate use is good
11:12 PM roycroft: registering them on spec or for vague future projects, not my thing any more
11:12 PM xxcoder: yeah I feel I will have it for year or two. unless they get greedy, I can afford it for long term.
11:13 PM xxcoder: I mean, 6 bucks a year is just fine
11:13 PM roycroft: yeah, that's a good rate
11:14 PM roycroft: hopefully it's a tld based in the us
11:14 PM roycroft: otherwise there will be a tariff on it before long
11:14 PM xxcoder: honestly I just picked cheapest one. its .win domain
11:15 PM roycroft: for personal use it doesn't really matter much
11:15 PM xxcoder: others will be able to use the plugins, but yeah
11:17 PM xxcoder: https://trmnl.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/ls5y6illcucis9lz3l4z1bqeyj87?response-content-disposition=inline%3B%20filename%3D%22plugin-2025-05-13T02-05-29Z-8c736b%22%3B%20filename%2A%3DUTF-8%27%27plugin-2025-05-13T02-05-29Z-8c736b&response-content-type=image%2Fpng&X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Credential=AKIA47CRUQUU4VKBBMOF%2F20250514%2Fus-east-2%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20250514T040639Z&X-Amz-Expires=300&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&X-Amz-Signa

11:17 PM xxcoder: dang url too long
11:17 PM xxcoder: a sec
11:17 PM xxcoder: https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/763323422746345472/1372062733251510304/ls5y6illcucis9lz3l4z1bqeyj87.png?ex=6825687f&is=682416ff&hm=21f6eb886aaaccda15f901ebafea1a3c4fe1dac0b0672761a9a637e6ae652632&=&format=webp&quality=lossless&width=873&height=524
11:18 PM xxcoder: trmnl is 1 bit epaper display, with tons of plugins. I made two, and that one is one of em
11:20 PM roycroft: i am supposed to avoid a supine position tonight
11:20 PM roycroft: my new recliner is comfy, but i'm not sure i can sleep in it
11:20 PM xxcoder: support your neck so it stays up
11:20 PM roycroft: the head support on the recliner is adjustable
11:21 PM xxcoder: im curious if you reconize the scene in that image lol
11:21 PM roycroft: that's honestly a really long url, and i hadn't browsed it
11:21 PM roycroft: i have to edit it to put it in a browser
11:21 PM xxcoder: nah second url is shorter but same image
11:22 PM roycroft: right
11:22 PM roycroft: but it's still longer than 80 characters - any url longer than that i have to edit
11:22 PM xxcoder: oh your client for irc lol
11:22 PM roycroft: my irc client adds a "+" at the beginning of continued lines
11:22 PM roycroft: and i have to edit that out
11:22 PM xxcoder: thats weird
11:23 PM xxcoder: can I pm you the picture only url? its very short
11:24 PM roycroft: it's ok -i edited it
11:24 PM xxcoder: lol ok
11:24 PM roycroft: and i don't recognize it offhand
11:24 PM roycroft: looks a little like the space shuttle
11:24 PM xxcoder: winnerbargo something forgot proper name
11:24 PM roycroft: i'm not complaining about the url, btw
11:24 PM xxcoder: basically rv but with wings
11:25 PM roycroft: i'm using a 30+ year old irc client
11:25 PM xxcoder: its scene where big helmet ship starts to capture the ship piloted by guy and dog/man guy acted by john candy
11:26 PM roycroft: i haven't seen that film in at least 35 years
11:26 PM xxcoder: been a while for me, but I still remember it. lol
11:26 PM roycroft: i remeber i liked it, but i don't really remember it otherwise
11:27 PM xxcoder: anyway my pc uploads random frame from movie to site
11:28 PM xxcoder: I didnt get all frames, but only one frame per 10 seconds
11:28 PM xxcoder: so it hits nearly all scenes just fine
11:28 PM roycroft: sounds like fun
11:28 PM xxcoder: yep. I did similiar to bad apple music movie
11:29 PM xxcoder: thats the other movie, though one frame per second because its much shorter
11:29 PM xxcoder: er other plugin that is
11:31 PM xxcoder: bad apple is famous for playing on some black and white screen devices lol and trmnl is one so...
11:31 PM xxcoder: some very strange ports too
11:32 PM xxcoder: lol wanted an example and found one I never saw. https://youtu.be/ywy-OwHejfs
11:32 PM xxcoder: bad apple video, cut into actual apples
