05:16 AM * JT-Cave wonders if Rod is behind the s curve thing... he has wiped my pc twice with his bad advice
05:57 AM bjorkintosh: what's the bad advice?
05:58 AM JT-Cave: I don't recall the exact commands but it trashed my pc and I had to reinstall the os
06:15 AM rdtsc: so a script did that much damage? sounds like it's time to run such experiments on virtual machines
06:16 AM JT-Cave: yup one was a script to "fix" a nic latency
06:16 AM Tom_L: morning
06:16 AM rdtsc: morning :)
06:24 AM rdtsc: imagine nic details are pretty machine-specific; might be a better idea to explain what needs changed and let the user do it manually
06:31 AM rdtsc: ccatlett1984: I see in the .hal 'loadrt pid names=pid.x,pid.y,pid.y2,pid.z,pid.s' - is this a gantry machine or not? If so, the .ini must be 'KINEMATICS = trivkins coordinates=XYYZ kinstype=BOTH'
07:47 AM JT-Cave: 54°
08:53 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> 61
09:48 AM pcw--home: 55
09:49 AM pcw--home: Supposed to be 80 today, some of our first warm weather, we had a very cool, wet winter/spring so far
09:54 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> same here
09:59 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> pcw--home: hit 93 down here. 680/24 interchange area
10:01 AM pcw--home: Yeah, almost always cooler closer to the coast
10:40 AM roycroft: today will be the last sunny day here for a week or so, but there's not much rain in the forecast
10:47 AM * roycroft is going to try to finish weed eating the lawn today, or at least make significantly more progress to that end
11:30 AM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> you guys use CSS right?
11:30 AM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> https://www.youtube.com/shorts/wCQEtX8jdlg
11:30 AM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> does this halscope of CSS look correct to you?
11:31 AM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> the signal hes probing is the PWM signal to the VFD
01:26 PM roycroft: i guess i haven't figured out all the hal parameters yet, as i attempted a short while ago to edit my main.hal and my machine.ini files to add the y axis, and it did not work
01:26 PM roycroft: i'll run the configurator again and compare results to what i was doing
01:27 PM roycroft: in the meantime, i wired up my other two axes, and just plugged each one into the mesa card as the x axis to confirm that they all work, which was my immediate goal
01:27 PM * roycroft is designing the controller cabinet for the minirouter now, and plans on working on that when his back gets sore from the yard work
04:56 PM xxcoder: blunt x. yet another new name for blondihack by autocaptions
06:18 PM JT-MShop: hmm, it going to be another cool night
06:19 PM xxcoder: rainy all week here. well little rains anyway
06:19 PM roycroft: this coming week
06:20 PM roycroft: it's been warm, almost hot, and sunny here for the past 10 days or so
06:20 PM roycroft: but clouds tomorrow, and a wee bit of rain on tuesday
06:20 PM xxcoder: it rained very little today, its just a start
06:20 PM JT-MShop: I have to cut down a 10' circumference red oak
06:20 PM roycroft: it's hot and sunny here still
06:21 PM roycroft: and i just found out that my peppermint plant has outlived its container
06:21 PM roycroft: i went to move it to its new home and the bottom fell out of the container
06:21 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> mint tends to do that, like a weed
06:21 PM xxcoder: mints is just tasty weed
06:22 PM roycroft: yeah
06:22 PM roycroft: the container was a half wine barrel, and tapered, so i was still able to move it near its new home without losing too much dirt
06:22 PM roycroft: i'll get a new container tomorrow when i'm in town
06:22 PM roycroft: that was the last of the container plants, all of which had to move, so great progress today
06:23 PM roycroft: my back is really hurting, though, and so i won't be moving any rocks today
06:23 PM roycroft: but baby steps every day add up to real progress over time
06:23 PM JT-MShop: so it's 38" in diameter or so and my MS 391 has a 24" bar
06:24 PM roycroft: you can do it
06:24 PM JT-MShop: so it's doable
06:24 PM roycroft: with that bar
06:24 PM xxcoder: yeah stay safe though, watch out for pinching etc
06:24 PM JT-MShop: it's a lot smaller than the last one I cut up at his house
06:24 PM roycroft: that's a pretty big tree though
06:25 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
06:25 PM roycroft: as long as a person knows what they're doing, and has plenty of wedges, and is paying attention, felling trees is not as dangerous as folks make it out to be
06:25 PM JT-MShop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOYR5xgJ0bQ
06:25 PM JT-MShop: it's the tree behind me
06:26 PM roycroft: logging is one of the most dangerous professions, but the vast majority of logging injuries are not from felling the trees
06:26 PM JT-MShop: and that's a 48" bar on the chainsaw mill
06:26 PM roycroft: they occur when yarding them
06:26 PM Unterhausen: We had a maple cut down, thought about salvaging the lumber but I got over it
06:27 PM JT-MShop: I made lumber and firewood from the last one
06:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have a chain saw motor run band saw somewhere around here
06:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> That I think was used the same way with rails on the log
06:28 PM roycroft: i have a 36" bar for my chainsaw, which is a bit beyond its normal limits
06:28 PM roycroft: but it works ok with an alaska mill, as long as i use a rip chain, and not a felling chain
06:28 PM roycroft: slow and steady
06:28 PM roycroft: i use a 21" and 24" bar for most things
06:29 PM JT-MShop: in the video you can see I rocked the saw back and forth only cutting on half the bar and yep slow and steady
06:29 PM roycroft: yes, that's the technique when using a long bar
06:29 PM roycroft: and you also are good at wedging the kerf
06:29 PM rdtsc_ is now known as rdtsc
06:29 PM JT-MShop: either that or get a much larger power head
06:29 PM roycroft: a pinched chain is no fun at all
06:30 PM JT-MShop: I had to cut those into quarters to fit on the sawmill
06:30 PM roycroft: my alaska mill *is* my sawmill
06:30 PM roycroft: i'm not set up to do that stuff well
06:31 PM JT-MShop: my friend around the corner has a bandsaw mill, I buy him blades and gas to use it
06:31 PM roycroft: and now i live in a tiny town surrounded by national forest on all sides
06:31 PM roycroft: i could get quite a bit of free wood to mill if i wanted it an had the means of milling it
06:32 PM roycroft: i also don't have a lot of yard to store logs and dry wood
06:32 PM roycroft: and what yard i have is mostly going to be garden soon
06:32 PM JT-MShop: I need to stock up on firewood and my buddy and my dentist at the family farm the tornado knocked down a bunch of trees so I need to go look a them
06:32 PM roycroft: i intentionally downsized the yard, because i'm getting older and want to downsize the maintenance
06:33 PM JT-MShop: I have a 50' x 16' lean to and have 3 6x8 pt boards to dry the lumber on outside
06:34 PM * roycroft is taking a short break, but has a few things to finish up outside
06:35 PM roycroft: some previous owner/renter pounded a bunch of pieces of rebar into the ground, sticking out about 10cm, and put short pieces of pvc pipe over them, i presume to keep folks from tripping on them
06:35 PM roycroft: i have no idea why those things are there
06:35 PM roycroft: but they need to go away
06:36 PM roycroft: i wheeled an engine hoist out into the yard, and figure i should be able to easily pull them up with that, once i figure out a good way to get a purchase on the rebar stubs
06:36 PM roycroft: they're too short and skinny to wrap a chain around, but maybe some sisal rope will do, assuming they're not too hard to pull
06:37 PM JT-MShop: I've used a pipe wrench to grab rebar and pulled them using a lever
06:37 PM xxcoder: weird. best I can think of is as grounding but rebar usually isnt used for that
06:37 PM roycroft: i got the whole front yard mowed/string trimmed and those things stick out like a sore thumb
06:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - unless you find a concrete footing...
06:37 PM roycroft: they've been bugging me since before i moved in here, so today is the day they need to go
06:38 PM roycroft: thanks, jt-mshop - that might be a really easy way to pull them
06:38 PM roycroft: i'll try that before rigging the engine hoist
06:39 PM roycroft: i should be able to lever with my legs, and not involve my back
06:39 PM roycroft: there's still the reaching down to the ground part though :(
06:41 PM roycroft: so when i got the laser level and surveyor's rod out today, i found that the front of my property is almost level, when measured along the property line
06:42 PM roycroft: someone dug a swale through the middle of the yard, though, and piled the dirt up along side it
06:42 PM roycroft: so it's pretty uneven
06:43 PM roycroft: but knowing that the perimeter is pretty level, it will hopefully be fairly easy to just pull the dirt down and fill in the swale
06:44 PM roycroft: whoever did it banked some big rocks up along parts of the mounds, though, presumably to keep them from eroding, so i'll have to dig those out first
06:44 PM Tom_L: wasn't there for drainage was it?
06:44 PM roycroft: if i lived in town i'd just rent a little kubota for 4 hours
06:44 PM roycroft: but that's an all day rental given the travel time to a rental yard
06:44 PM roycroft: no, it's not
06:45 PM roycroft: and i did nothing about it last year, wanting to get through a rainy season first before deciding what to do
06:45 PM roycroft: i've been through a rainy season now, and there will be no problem
06:45 PM roycroft: my neighbor told me that a former resident loved digging and loved rocks
06:46 PM roycroft: so maybe the person who did it was just doing it for fun
06:46 PM roycroft: the back yard is like that too - big trenches through the yard, with dirt piled up in mounds supported by rocks
06:47 PM roycroft: one of my other neighbors told me that a former resident (i don't know if it's the same one) grew pot plants in the back yard
06:47 PM JT-MShop: maybe they were working on a mini Stonehenge
06:47 PM roycroft: the city engineer told me that, being close to the river, those rocks were all naturally there
06:47 PM roycroft: but none of my other neighbors has nearly as many rocks as me
06:48 PM roycroft: and i'm well away from the flood zone
06:48 PM Tom_L: maybe they donated them
06:48 PM roycroft: maybe
06:48 PM roycroft: when i'm able to move them i'll make a big pile and advertise them for free on cl
06:48 PM Tom_L: pet rocks
06:48 PM roycroft: probably no locals would want them, but folks from eugene might want some for landscaping - they are expensive to buy
06:51 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_
06:51 PM roycroft: cobblestone is $100/yard in town for smaller stuff, and big specimen rocks are even more
06:51 PM roycroft: many of mine are specimen rocks - 12" or bigger
06:52 PM rdtsc_ is now known as rdtsc
06:52 PM roycroft: so it's probably worth the drive up here to get some for free
06:52 PM roycroft: at least i hope
06:53 PM roycroft: otherwise i'll have to load them myself and haul them away and possibly even pay to dispose of them
06:53 PM roycroft: and i do not want to do any of that
06:53 PM * roycroft 's back is still hurting, but knows also that if he sits here much longer he won't go back out and finish the day's chores
06:54 PM JT-MShop: sometimes you just need to take a break
06:54 PM NetPipe: https://github.com/netpipe/sodiumPKE
06:55 PM xxcoder: lol https://jaws.superfun.games/ I want to make my own version for trmnl but I have zero idea how to setup it :P
06:55 PM xxcoder: they have github but yeah
06:56 PM roycroft: there are five of these pieces of rebar
06:56 PM roycroft: if they come out easily then it should not take long
06:57 PM roycroft: if not then i'll think about finishing up tomorrow
06:59 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/BWQYnYsbFpn8qEjV8
07:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/cjQbrmztBWvWsiEK7
07:00 PM JT-MShop: nice save
07:01 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I might have to unhook the condenser to get the new radiator support in..
07:01 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> i don't know if there is enough room
07:01 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> but that isn't here until next week
07:04 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:05 PM JT-Shop: roycroft, I paint the ends of the log with a few coats of oil base paint to prevent checking and I use red for red oak and white for white oak
07:07 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
07:43 PM roycroft: it was not easy to pull the rerod
07:43 PM roycroft: i will work on it to morrow
07:43 PM roycroft: jt-shop: latex paint and white glue mixed together also works well
07:44 PM * roycroft would cut red oak into firewood and white oak into board, and would not have trouble telling them apart :)
09:01 PM Tom_L: roycroft, were you able to turn the rebar?
09:01 PM xxcoder: probably too tough to be turncoat ;)
09:02 PM xxcoder: hopefully hes fine after pulling, or trying to pull, those rebars,
09:36 PM roycroft: it proved difficult
09:36 PM roycroft: and i was sore
09:36 PM roycroft: so i put the job off until tomorrow
09:36 PM xxcoder: doh yeah theres always another day :)
09:54 PM roycroft: $300/day for a skid steer
09:54 PM roycroft: that's actually not too bad
