07:31 AM Tom_Cell: morning
10:00 AM roycroft: hi folks
10:00 AM bjorkintosh: how's healing, roycroft?
10:00 AM roycroft: it's going fine
10:00 AM roycroft: i overslept today, and i think i needed to
10:01 AM bjorkintosh: \o/ excellent.
10:02 AM roycroft: i should have the vertigo issue addressed on tuesday, and if that gets fixed it will be a major step forward
10:35 AM rdtsc-w: Interesting: only one thing in the body is more voracious than cancer: brown-fat cells. These are not for energy storage, but generate heat. Lowering ambient temperature slightly (activating brown fat, thus starving cancer) has shown a 50% reduction in cancer growth! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ze2rmsLiTfA
10:52 AM roycroft: today may be moving day for me
10:52 AM roycroft: i just bought a new vps, and my irc client will be moving to it when i get it fully provisioned
10:53 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> what's a vps ??
10:53 AM roycroft: virtual private server
10:53 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> ok
10:56 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> well, it's ride time.....
10:56 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> bbl
11:03 AM roycroft: maybe i'll get it done today - the hosting provider is not letting me upload an iso image of the os i need
11:05 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I am pretty lucky.. Virtigo just makes me dizzy - not sick. Feels like riding a rollercoaster.
11:07 AM JT-Cave: interesting that installing the linuxcnc iso also adds qtpyvcp as well as probe basic and a few other gui's
11:07 AM roycroft: same here, fortunately
11:07 AM roycroft: no nausea at all
11:07 AM roycroft: but it's still rather disconcerting
11:08 AM roycroft: and i can cause the vertigo at will
11:09 AM roycroft: i know exactly how to move to make it happen
11:09 AM roycroft: which means i can mostly avoid it
11:09 AM roycroft: but sometimes it happens even when i'm not doing a movement that reliably brings it on
11:13 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I normally get it working under things - like vehicles.. If I get up - I have to brace myself until things stop spinning.
11:16 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> JT-Cave: it does?
11:16 AM JT-Cave: yup
11:16 AM roycroft: that sounds like bppv, which is what i likely have
11:17 AM roycroft: and if you do have it, it's almost always trivial to fix
11:17 AM roycroft: it takes about 10 minutes at your doctor's office or at a physical therapist's office
11:17 AM JT-Cave: looks like you can just do sudo apt install python3-probe-basic
11:18 AM roycroft: i would recommend you contact your pcp and let them know that you experience vertigo and the conditions
11:18 AM roycroft: they will likely have you fixed up quickly
11:19 AM roycroft: do your eyes roll around when this happens?
11:29 AM roycroft: habemus papem
11:29 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> No - they just twitch back and forth.. Freaks people out.
11:29 AM roycroft: but who?
11:29 AM roycroft: we'll find out soon
11:29 AM roycroft: hmm
11:30 AM roycroft: i don't know if twitching back and forth is indicative of bppv or not
11:30 AM roycroft: and i'm not trying to play a doctor on the internet
11:30 AM bjorkintosh: better leave that to reddit.
11:30 AM roycroft: but i still think that it might easily be fixed
11:30 AM bjorkintosh: they'll be your legal counselor too
11:30 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I will mention it at the next physical
11:31 AM roycroft: bppv is the most common cause of vertigo, and as i said, it's almost always easily corrected
11:32 AM roycroft: there are calcium crystals in your inner ear that are used kind of gyroscopically - the cilia that surround the crystals detect movement
11:32 AM roycroft: if the crystals get disloged and move into another part of the inner ear that causes vertigo with certain movements
11:32 AM bjorkintosh: yeah. I found that out from a friend who has pretty severe vertigo.
11:32 AM roycroft: the treatment is to move them back, which is done by a therapist moving your head and by gravity

12:27 PM bjorkintosh: behold the new big papa https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominique_Mamberti
12:29 PM bjorkintosh: ignore that. wiki was wrong!
12:29 PM bjorkintosh: they deleted it. there is a new pope we don't know who yet.
12:32 PM roycroft: yes, it's cardinal prevost, the first pope from the us
12:33 PM bjorkintosh: oh.
12:33 PM bjorkintosh: nice!
12:33 PM roycroft: leo xiv is his papal name
12:34 PM roycroft: he's been serving in peru most of his life
12:34 PM roycroft: but he was born and raised in chicago
12:35 PM bjorkintosh: a mathematician!
12:35 PM bjorkintosh: I hope he brings ... rational thought to the whole
12:35 PM bjorkintosh: who am I kidding?
12:36 PM roycroft: he's an augustinian
12:39 PM roycroft: pretty good creds, generally, other than failure to address sexual abuse cases by his clergy
12:39 PM roycroft: which seems to be the case with just about every cardinal and other bishop
12:40 PM bjorkintosh: he's quite young! only 69.
12:41 PM roycroft: i guess time will tell if he's a good pope or not
12:41 PM roycroft: but there seems to be potential
12:46 PM roycroft: he's almost certainly going to be better than ratzinger (benedictus xvi)
12:52 PM roycroft: interesting fact - there were 133 voting cardinals in the conclave
12:52 PM roycroft: of those, pope francis appointed 108 of them
12:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> That had to help...
12:53 PM roycroft: i think we'll probably see some continuity of francis' reforms
12:53 PM roycroft: which is good
12:54 PM bjorkintosh: holy hell. 108?
12:54 PM bjorkintosh: is that a record?
12:54 PM roycroft: probably
12:54 PM bjorkintosh: you get cardinal, you get cardinal ... everyone gets cardinal!
12:55 PM roycroft: and leo is only the second pope born outside europe in the last 1300 years
12:55 PM roycroft: the other one being francis
12:56 PM bjorkintosh: two spanish speakers in a row!
01:07 PM rdtsc-w: too tired... i'm poped
01:19 PM bjorkintosh: ha. ha. ha. (slow knee slap). ha.
01:46 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> rdtsc-w: you're pun ishing us
02:00 PM roycroft: here's to cardinal leo for the first time tonight

03:22 PM JT-MShop: $3.64 for a quarter sawn pine 2x4x8
03:22 PM xxcoder: isnt those used to be sub-dollar?
03:27 PM JT-MShop: yeah 30 years ago
03:27 PM xxcoder: hmm I misremembered then
03:28 PM xxcoder: I remember buying some for pretty cheap a while ago, but I couldnt recall price now. certainly was less than 3.65 though
03:40 PM JT-MShop: economy was about $2.50
03:42 PM JT-MShop: the price for construction lumber took a hike in 93 and never went back below $200 per 1000 bf
03:43 PM JT-MShop: in 2021 it was $1,390 per 1000 bf
03:43 PM JT-MShop: https://www.macrotrends.net/2637/lumber-prices-historical-chart-data
03:44 PM xxcoder: yeah not surpised that plague era also rose prices
03:44 PM xxcoder: went down but generally increasimg afterwards
03:44 PM rdtsc-w: is it any coincidence that wood is gold-color?
03:50 PM roycroft: that's pretty good, jt-mshop
03:50 PM JT-MShop: I had to dig a bit to find them :)
03:51 PM roycroft: yellow pine?
03:51 PM JT-MShop: white I assume
03:51 PM roycroft: which costs a fortune here, if i can ever find it
03:51 PM roycroft: oh
03:51 PM JT-MShop: usually syp is in larger sizes here
03:51 PM roycroft: i guess you're more in cypruss territory than yellow pine territory
03:51 PM roycroft: it's all about the douglas fir here
03:52 PM roycroft: except we get "hemfir" for cheap dimensional framing lumber
03:52 PM roycroft: which is mostly "hem" and rarely "fir"
03:52 PM roycroft: hemlock is not a very good wood for much of anything
03:53 PM roycroft: i don't even think it burns well
03:53 PM JT-MShop: not even good for firewood lol

05:15 PM JT-Shop: 13 months after my wife had back surgery she is ready to go for a short ride on the BlueWing
05:17 PM roycroft: that's great
05:25 PM JT-Shop: yep I'm stoked she asked to go for a ride
05:25 PM roycroft: take it really easy on the first go
05:25 PM JT-Shop: is baltic birch ply still not available?
05:25 PM roycroft: it's becoming more available, but it's still overpriced
05:26 PM JT-Shop: yup we are just going to Speedy Cone at the lake about 20 miles
05:26 PM JT-Shop: I'll wait then...
05:27 PM JT-Shop: I used to get it from schaller
05:30 PM JT-Shop: I built a cross cut sled from william ng video
05:30 PM JT-Shop: looks like it's been 4 years since his last video
05:39 PM roycroft: yeah, he seems to have moved on to other things
05:40 PM roycroft: i bought some router tooling from him
05:41 PM roycroft: the first "fingernail" cutters i got
05:49 PM Tom_L: what's a good wood for decking?
05:49 PM roycroft: ipe
05:51 PM roycroft: mahogany would be my next choice
05:51 PM roycroft: followed by redwood, cedar, and cypress
05:52 PM Tom_L: tongue & groove
05:53 PM Tom_L: if you used pine what would you choose?
05:53 PM Tom_L: this old porch is pine i'm pretty sure and a good 100+ yrs old
05:53 PM roycroft: i would never use any kind of pine except southern yellow pine, which would be very good for decking but it not available in my part of the world
05:54 PM Tom_L: i think i saw some at the lumber yard a while back but forgot what it was
05:54 PM Tom_L: you could tell the difference right away
05:54 PM roycroft: the woods i mentioned above are all very durable outdoors
05:55 PM roycroft: if you use pine you'll have to paint or stain it frequently if you want it to last
05:55 PM Tom_L: this has been painted with oil based paint
05:56 PM roycroft: the grass in most of my yard is knee-high now, because i've not been able to mow this year
05:56 PM roycroft: i think i should go out and start attacking it with a string trimmer
05:57 PM roycroft: i don't expect to get much done at a time, but if i can spend 15 minutes per day working on it i should get it done in a week or so
05:57 PM Tom_L: get a goat
05:57 PM roycroft: and then i can mow
05:57 PM roycroft: too bad my kittens are not outside critters
05:58 PM xxcoder: cats dont eat grass in most part either so thats fine I guess
05:58 PM roycroft: if they were, and i explained to them that when cats eat grass the come in the house and throw up on the carpet, they would be out there munching on it in an instant
05:58 PM roycroft: no cat would pass up an opportunity to throw up on the carpet
05:59 PM roycroft: and my current ones both have short hair, so it's hard to even throw up hairballs
05:59 PM * roycroft goes out to see if he can make a bit of knee-high grass ankle-high
05:59 PM xxcoder: i remember 2 cats we had quite a while ago. they was bit unusual hair type, they are short hairs, but also have undercoat fur
06:00 PM xxcoder: so they have very dense fur
06:02 PM Contract_Pilot: sup.. I am way sunburnt.
06:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Contract_Pilot!
06:13 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
06:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I am definatly going to need more parts than I bought for the VW
06:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lots of broken plastic bits
06:58 PM roycroft: i got about a quarter of the yard whacked down
06:58 PM roycroft: so good progress
06:59 PM roycroft: i also finished installing the new motor on my air compressor, so i have air again and, thus, a fairly functional shop
07:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yay!
07:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - someone pissed off louis rossman
07:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> n
07:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> again
07:05 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> some company that sells software for fixing hardware (gaming consoles?) installs software that keeps track of what you have on your computer and will revoke your licence if you have something that he doesn't agree with. no refund
07:07 PM roycroft: sounds like something daniel bernstein would do
07:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> BWE - I don't know the company
07:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> better ways electronics
07:17 PM roycroft: bernstein is a college professor
07:17 PM roycroft: he likes to spend his time being an arse and pissing off as many people as possible
07:17 PM roycroft: i don't think he has time for any commercial enterprise
07:18 PM roycroft: so it's doubtful he's connected with that outfit
07:18 PM roycroft: you may know him as the author of qmail and djbdns
07:22 PM bjorkintosh: second time in 4 years his name has come up.
07:23 PM bjorkintosh: I vaguely remember the first time.
07:24 PM roycroft: he teaches at the school where i started taking engineering courses
07:25 PM roycroft: but i was long gone by the time he arrived
08:16 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> some dissasembly required... https://photos.app.goo.gl/4kY34egJBPN7oM4M7
08:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> So many plastic chards
