05:00 AM Tom_L: morning
06:20 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:10 AM JT-Mobile: morning
08:49 AM JT-Mobile: Rain here in Osage Beach
09:11 AM _unreal_: I'm thinking about heading to boca beach myself today
09:11 AM _unreal_: though its 80f and raining sun shine
09:11 AM _unreal_: infact it really hasnt rained for about 2 months
09:11 AM _unreal_: :/
09:58 AM bjorkintosh: 'raining sunshine'. I'm going to steal that.
11:59 AM xxcoder: JT-Mobile: lol peer sure dont like you today
12:27 PM xxcoder: curious what you guys think of slate truck
12:46 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> dammit, how will this effect amazons relationshit with rivian?
12:47 PM xxcoder: ceo just invested in it, not own company
01:51 PM roycroft: i need to try to get my air compressor working
01:51 PM roycroft: i hope i can contort enough to do it
01:52 PM roycroft: i also hope the motor shaft is not damaged
01:53 PM Tom_L: why would it be?
01:54 PM roycroft: the sheave came off
01:54 PM roycroft: which is the reason for the contortions
01:54 PM roycroft: it's really difficult and tight to get back in to where the sheave mounts on the motor
01:54 PM Tom_L: just don't contort back to the OR
01:54 PM roycroft: no
01:55 PM roycroft: i'll stop immediately if my next movement will not work
01:56 PM roycroft: i realized that my portable compressor, which i was going to use, is tucked away in a place where i would need to lift it to get it out, and it weighs more than i'm allowed to lift right now
01:56 PM roycroft: so fixing the main compressor is the option
01:57 PM roycroft: i also have to try to prep part of my herb garden bed today - it's almsot too late to plant basil
01:57 PM roycroft: i think i can do that if i use a small spade
01:58 PM * roycroft heads out to see about the compressor
02:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> well - Just pulled a deer tick off me.. It was on my shoulder blade - it was sore. Why I noticed it.
02:05 PM roycroft: well that was a quick project, but not in a good way
02:06 PM roycroft: i picked up the sheave and found the motor shaft inside it
02:06 PM roycroft: the shaft broke off cleanly right at the sheave
02:06 PM roycroft: so now i need a new compressor motor, if i can't get this one repaired affordably
02:06 PM xxcoder: sounds like it rotated off
02:07 PM roycroft: the motor still works fine - which is how i discovered the problem
02:07 PM roycroft: i heard the motor running but not the compressor motor
02:07 PM xxcoder: wonder if you could machine a bolt hole and flatten the broken end, then bolt to it
02:07 PM roycroft: um, no
02:07 PM roycroft: this is a 5hp motor
02:07 PM roycroft: i think it needs a proper repair
02:08 PM roycroft: but your previous statement reminds me that i should make sure the compressor pump still rotates freely
02:08 PM xxcoder: ah yes too powerful, cant do bolt on to it. too bad
02:09 PM roycroft: and it does
02:09 PM roycroft: which is good - i paid about $750 for that pump 20ish years ago, so it's probably more than $1k by now
02:10 PM xxcoder: just had thought of belt arrangement lol
02:10 PM xxcoder: probably too much torque for that
02:11 PM roycroft: a new motor is over $600
02:13 PM flyback is now known as carl_sagan
02:13 PM xxcoder: I uppose chain designed for bikes would work. tons torque there
02:13 PM carl_sagan is now known as flyback
02:14 PM roycroft: it's a dual belt drive
02:14 PM xxcoder: ahh interesting.
02:14 PM roycroft: and it uses large belts, i forget the sizing designation
02:14 PM xxcoder: would weld on sleeve work on broken shift?
02:15 PM Tom_L: takes quite a bit to shear off a shaft
02:15 PM Tom_L: something abnormal happened
02:15 PM roycroft: i think it's size b, vs the more common, smaller, size a
02:15 PM xxcoder: might be hidden flaw in shift but never stressed enough till it broke
02:15 PM roycroft: yeah, it does, tom_l
02:16 PM roycroft: i was careful to align the sheave with the compressor pump sheave
02:16 PM roycroft: this motor is 20ish years old, like the compressor pump
02:16 PM Tom_L: i've never changed belts but mine probably has 2 or 3. i've never paid that much attention
02:16 PM Tom_L: 5hp 80gal
02:16 PM Tom_L: 2 stage
02:16 PM roycroft: unfortunately it's a leeson motor, which is why the replacement would be so expensive
02:17 PM Tom_L: doesn't get regular use now but at one time it did
02:17 PM roycroft: but the fact that it lasted this long is because it's a leeson, so i'm probably money ahead on it anyway
02:17 PM xxcoder: would you be able to repair it somehow?
02:18 PM xxcoder: even if its $200 part its still cheaper than whole thing
02:18 PM roycroft: i'm going to take it to a motor repair shop and see how much it would be to replace the shaft
02:19 PM Tom_L: https://www.ebay.com/itm/154686022978
02:19 PM roycroft: and yes, i would spend $200 on the repair
02:19 PM Tom_L: mine looks in better shape
02:19 PM roycroft: mine looks really good, but it's been kept in a shed the whole time i've had it
02:19 PM Tom_L: wow that thing is beat all to hell
02:20 PM Tom_L: i certainly wouldn't give the asking price
02:20 PM roycroft: even if i decided to go cheap, harbor freight no longer sell 5hp motors - 3hp is their biggest
02:20 PM roycroft: i would maybe pay $200 for that ebay compressor
02:20 PM xxcoder: rust everywhere, id be concerned about internal rust if its not maintaned at all
02:20 PM xxcoder: ie empty of water etc
02:20 PM roycroft: yeah, the tank would need to be pressure tested
02:22 PM Tom_L: 175psi cutoff
02:22 PM roycroft: anyway, i'll pull the old motor after lunch - it's right about at my weight limit - and regroup
02:24 PM roycroft: there are cheap chinese motors on ebay
02:24 PM roycroft: but i want a motor shop to check my leeson out before i make any plans like that
02:39 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> you can do a lot of hydrostatic testing with a grease gun
02:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I remember dad doing that wish a wards? maybe sears single stage aircompressor tank that we had for ages.. maybe it was used when dad got it. the bottom rusted through and he welded a big patch and pressure tested it in the basement bathroom with water and a grease gun
02:47 PM xxcoder: always safer to use water to pressure test
02:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it wasn't until the late 80s probably before we had a nice 2 stage air compressor. Still using it now
02:57 PM roycroft: mine started out as a husky, that i purchased from home depot
02:58 PM roycroft: a few years after i got it the motor died, and i got the leeson motor
02:58 PM roycroft: shortly thereafter the pump failed, and i replaced that with a high-end one made in wisconsin
02:58 PM roycroft: i forget the brand, but it was expensive, and it is very good
02:59 PM xxcoder: compressor of theseus
02:59 PM roycroft: the tank is all that's left of the husky
03:02 PM roycroft: it might be arctic compressors - they are made in wisconsin
03:04 PM roycroft: oh, no
03:04 PM roycroft: it's polar air
03:04 PM roycroft: who may be arctic compressors now
03:05 PM roycroft: polar air seem to be part of eaton now
03:06 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> damn tickseason. i havent been checking because i thought it was too early
03:06 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> im gonna just eat the dogs tick meds
03:11 PM roycroft: we have a different species of deer tick here than back east, and it's very uncommon in washington and oregon -it's most prevelant in northern california and western british columbia
03:12 PM roycroft: i'm not sure i've ever seen one
03:15 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> at least its not lonestar tick
03:17 PM xxcoder: yeah you want to be able to eat meat
03:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - that was my first though. The 1/4 beef we just bought. well - the kids will be eating good..
03:23 PM xxcoder: wow https://www.psu.edu/news/engineering/story/student-refines-100-year-old-math-problem-expanding-wind-energy-possibilities
04:41 PM xxcoder: what, frank video thats not wood project? https://youtu.be/3-AS0TaXCiE
04:42 PM xxcoder: havent watched whole video so wood might get involved later
04:48 PM xxcoder: ah wood is involved at end lol
05:04 PM roycroft: change of plans for me - i felt up to doing some mowing and weedeating - just a bit to get started on the lawn
05:04 PM roycroft: and that went fine, and i ended up being able to prep most of my herb garden bed
05:05 PM roycroft: but now i'm done with that work, not by choice
05:05 PM roycroft: my back told me i'm done
05:06 PM roycroft: i need to sit for a while, and i think i'll sit in my car and go get some basil and oregano and whatever other herb starts i fancy
05:07 PM * roycroft would like to have a fairly complete culinary herb garden this year
05:07 PM * JT-Shop is growing a bumper crop of chick-weed this year
05:13 PM lcnc-relay: <rs> new sigbovik proceedings available https://sigbovik.org/2025/proceedings.pdf
06:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> The universal shaper table is getting a reprieve.. Found a spot under the racking for it.
06:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/sopPfZEzFnKptDzW8
06:32 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> starting to fill up the rack. The little electric forklift (walk behind) is coming in handy. It is a bit on the big size - but works.
06:35 PM JT-Shop: I need to move all my bench tools to the wall and make a bench in the shelving for them than get rid of the tables
06:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> this shelving unit could be a bench - as it is the same hight as the granite surface plate. I don't know yet how it is going to be used
06:48 PM JT-Shop: one table I figure weighs 1,500 pounds with a 1" thick top
06:48 PM jdh: we have some 16ft,x3ftx4"
06:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> oof
06:49 PM JT-Shop: that's freaking heavy
06:49 PM jdh: one that is no longer flat makes a great storage area
06:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> there is a youtuber that I was watch which I think is using a table from a large boring machine as a work bench..
06:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> or something similar.
06:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> probably really solid lol
06:50 PM JT-Shop: I have two tables from some automatic assembly machines
06:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> and you have t-slots for mounting stuff
06:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have this table that I probably won't get rid of.. Cast iron - really flat.. (currently full of junk) https://photos.app.goo.gl/g4csBFxaBY7U1AMXA
06:52 PM xxcoder: wow old kind of surface
06:53 PM xxcoder: amazing if you want to use magetic base for stuff. unless not magetic?
06:53 PM jdh: I like seeing not-so-organized shops. makes me feel better
06:53 PM xxcoder: wow first time seeing cast iron surface. insane.
06:59 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it is blanchard ground
07:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> jdh: I am getting there.. So much stuff to go through
07:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I feel like I am making progress - this weekend was pretty good..
07:01 PM jdh: mine got worse this w/e
07:02 PM JT-Shop: we had a fun weekend at Margaritaville with friends but tiring
07:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/AYgyof1ht5XP9wDT7
07:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> even putting stuff on it!
07:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Where is margaritaville?
07:03 PM JT-Shop: lake of the ozarks
07:03 PM JT-Shop: in Missouri
07:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> nice!
07:04 PM JT-Shop: one of our group actually won an honorable mention
07:04 PM JT-Shop: the die hard show people had their corvettes spotless
07:05 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> which one did you take? (or is the classic one not together yet?)
07:05 PM JT-Shop: the C3 is not ready for any trip so we took the C8
07:06 PM JT-Shop: I drove the C3 the other day a bit and need to get another alignment done now that I'm done replacing parts in the front end
07:07 PM JT-Shop: there was only a few C3's at the show
07:09 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
07:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> this is the current area of attention...
07:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/xdR5JdmowESTwjHn9
07:53 PM roycroft: i hope there will be a montage of before and after pics of that shop when you're all done, skunkworks8841
07:53 PM roycroft: *if* you ever finishe
07:53 PM roycroft: that looks like a project that could take years
07:54 PM * roycroft is back from town with gardening supplies
07:55 PM roycroft: i'm not sure i'll plant anything today - i have a fair amount of soil prep to finish first, and while my back recovered quite a bit during the drive to town and back, i'm not thinking it has a lot to offer me right now
07:55 PM roycroft: but everything i need is here, so i can plant whenever
07:59 PM * roycroft heads out to see if he can move any more dirt around today
08:55 PM roycroft: well i don't think i overdid it, but i approached my limit
08:55 PM roycroft: and i got most of the herbs planted
08:55 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I figured it will be years.. I can't sustain cleaning/organizing.. this is mainly to get to the point of being able to use the car lift. Side effects is that I also organize...
08:55 PM xxcoder: not too bad
08:56 PM roycroft: yeah, just do it in chunks
08:56 PM roycroft: the car lift being the first chunk
08:56 PM xxcoder: talking about plants, I think I want to buy a spider plant
08:56 PM xxcoder: next month
08:56 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Yes. Next is fix car damage and tree house
08:57 PM roycroft: i am going to reward myself for the work i got done today
08:57 PM roycroft: when i was at the market the other day there were two bottles of pliny the elder
08:57 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I just got cuttings from an aunt. The family Christmas cactus.. I haven't killed them yet..
08:57 PM roycroft: now there are two bottles of pliny the elder in my fridge
08:57 PM roycroft: i shall enjoy one of them with dinner
08:58 PM roycroft: i am way burned out on ipas, but pliny the elder is consistently rated as the best ipa in the world, and i concur
08:59 PM roycroft: it's ridiculously complicated to brew, with over a dozen hop infusions, and multiple malt/sugar additions
09:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have not found an iPa that I liked.. if I was still drinking - I would give it a try.
09:01 PM roycroft: pliny the younger is actually a better beer, from what i'm told
09:01 PM roycroft: but they only brew it once/year, in february, and only in a very limited quantity, sold only at the brewery
09:01 PM roycroft: i suppose after i retire i can plan a trip down to santa rosa in february :)
09:02 PM roycroft: wow
09:03 PM roycroft: sonoma county have done studies, and they have determined that the annual release of pliny the younger brings several million dollars into the local economy, from people traveling from all over the country and the world for some pliny
09:12 PM bjorkintosh: that's funny. I read from the bottom and was confused for a second.
09:12 PM bjorkintosh: I thought people were reading about Pliny the younger and were huge fans.
09:13 PM roycroft: of the beer, absolutely :)
09:21 PM roycroft: i have been to trier, btw - pliny the elder's stomping grounds late in his career
09:25 PM roycroft: i think i want to work on the mini cnc router after dinner - i guess i need to figure out the current state of linuxcnc on an rpi
10:07 PM * roycroft just got up and is well aware that he was doing lawn and garden work today
10:09 PM roycroft: the linuxcnc forum is not being very helpful right now regarding linuxcnc on an rpi 4
10:09 PM roycroft: but i'll wade through it more, and hopefully find out what i need to know
10:14 PM Tom_L: there should be an image file for it on the downloads page
10:15 PM Tom_L: mine is debian 12 and i forget what lcnc version without booting it
10:15 PM Tom_L: 2.9 something
10:16 PM Tom_L: http://linuxcnc.org/downloads/
10:16 PM Tom_L: 2.9.4 uspace for rpi4 and rpi5
10:17 PM Tom_L: .img.xz files
10:29 PM roycroft: i have read/heard folks talk about having issues with linuxcnc current and some rpi 4/5 distros
10:29 PM roycroft: but i'm not finding any of the details offhand
10:29 PM roycroft: perhaps it would be faster to just try it myself
