08:21 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - lost a phase again this morning.. Bad part is - it is the phase that runs the house..
08:36 AM bjorkintosh: andypugh_: great idea too! they're cheap enough. can be easily labeled ...
08:48 AM Tom_L: "this is the one you're looking for"
11:26 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> oof.. after the power came back on - mom said - 'we don't have any water pressure'
11:27 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> ran home and the pump control box is getting power. Pull the box apart - everything looks good. take it down to the shop and measure the cap - .9nf
11:27 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> pull it out - it is leaking fluid.
11:27 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (should be around 80uf)
11:27 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> found one that fits - and pump took right off.
11:27 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Really should get a bigger pressure tank - plus I don't know how good the one that is in there now.
11:28 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> when I went to put the control box back together - it had a puddle of electrolite under where the box is mounted. Didn't notice that.
11:35 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (first thing I did was measure the motor windings - those looked good - thank goodness.
11:40 AM roycroft: if you don't have the right cap you can wrap some string around the sheave and pull
12:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - the pump motor is at the bottom of the well.
12:10 PM roycroft: then you need a long string
12:17 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> very long..
12:18 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> glad I didn't have to pull the pump
12:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (the pump and box is new from last summer)
01:22 PM roycroft: i found out at my doctor's appointment yesterday that there was a lot of bleeding during my surgery - enough that they almost had to do a blood transfusion - an that i'm anemic right now, which would explain the dizziness
01:23 PM roycroft: the doctor said it takes 3-1/2 months to build my red blood cell count back up to normal, and i'm a month into that process
01:23 PM xxcoder: removing the staples?
01:23 PM roycroft: the staples are gone :)
01:23 PM roycroft: that was mostly painless
01:23 PM roycroft: i'm thinking i won't start working on my roof until mid july or so
01:23 PM xxcoder: ahh that surgery a while ago. was thinking "how did removing staples get so much blood"
01:24 PM bjorkintosh: 'roof'?? *blink*
01:24 PM roycroft: yeah, i need to build a new roof for my shop
01:24 PM roycroft: i know that when i bought the place
01:24 PM roycroft: knwq
01:24 PM roycroft: knew, dammit
01:25 PM roycroft: but i'm not going to do that kind of work while i'm having dizzy spells
01:25 PM bjorkintosh: so, which trade do you actually know nothing about or have not attempted?
01:25 PM roycroft: wouldn't be prudent
01:25 PM roycroft: most of them
01:25 PM roycroft: i do have a fair amount of experience in the building trades, though
01:26 PM roycroft: i've never built a gambrel roof, though, and that is what i aim to do for my shop
01:26 PM roycroft: so that should be an interesting experience
01:27 PM roycroft: and it's not going to be the typical modern strut construction - i want it open so i can use the space above the shop walls
01:27 PM xxcoder: nighthawk built a tiny camper apparenly
01:27 PM roycroft: which will also make it easier in a way to do
01:27 PM bjorkintosh: surely team lifting will be involved, yes?
01:27 PM bjorkintosh: you won't be attempting it alone?
01:28 PM roycroft: if it were struts i'd have to have them lifted in with a crane
01:28 PM roycroft: but if i stick build it i can do it one piece at a time
01:28 PM roycroft: i may get a helper, if i can find one, for some of the work
01:28 PM roycroft: but i should be able to do most of it myself, especially if i buy or build a scaffold
01:30 PM roycroft: i have to cost it out, but i may be able to cost-justify buying the big festool domino tool for that job
01:30 PM roycroft: the big domino tool is about $1500, but if i can use dominos to join the roof framing member together at an angle, that would help things a lot
01:31 PM roycroft: if it were trusses (sorry, i used struts above, when i meant trusses) i would build them on the ground and would not need dominos
01:31 PM roycroft: but if i'm framing it in place the dominos would really help with alignment
01:32 PM roycroft: i could use my small domino tool for that, but it's not really the appropriate use for it, and the big one would be useful for some other projects i have in mind to do
01:32 PM roycroft: plus it's festool - i can sell it for almost what i paid for it when i'm done
01:32 PM roycroft: if i get it from the festool recon store i could sell it at a profit after i'm done with it
01:40 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I built a gambrel roof in place.. I actually don't remember if it was hard or not. it was quite a long time ago. I bought the top trusses - then just framed the side 'walls' - placed the trusses on top.
01:41 PM roycroft: i don't think it will be too hard
01:42 PM roycroft: my plan is to build the side walls first, and have some vertical studs to support them
01:42 PM roycroft: then i can build the top parts
01:42 PM roycroft: the goal is to have a corridor down the length of the shop the full height to the upper rafters
01:43 PM roycroft: and to build a floor on the rafters from the outer wall to the side wall studs
01:43 PM roycroft: so that i can have overhead storage on both sides, and a tall open space in the middle of the shop
01:43 PM roycroft: if that makes sens
01:43 PM roycroft: e
01:43 PM roycroft: if not, wait for preliminary drawings :)
01:44 PM roycroft: i'm going to need to install at least some beams going across the shop so that the shop walls don't bow out but i don't want them every 24" apart like they currently are
01:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/fLtq3Sbz8n1Qhhcs7
01:45 PM roycroft: every 6' or 8' would be fine, and that will probably require some decent size lvl beams
01:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> only picture I have near me currently. You can see the tipped 2x6's - no roof yet.
01:45 PM roycroft: yeah
01:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> This was a 24 foot span - made floor trusses..
01:45 PM roycroft: my span is 14'
01:46 PM roycroft: so it shouldn't be that big a deal
01:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> This was a loft style - so - why the wall/floor ends
01:47 PM roycroft: the difference between that and what i'm going to do is that you put ceiling joists across the lower floor
01:47 PM roycroft: and i want to avoid those
01:47 PM roycroft: so that the middle is open to the upper ceiling
01:48 PM roycroft: i think if i put in some big lvl beams running the length of the shop (24') to support the lower rafter studs, and did conventional joints from them to the outer walls, i'd only need 1 or 2 beams between the long beams to hold it together
01:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> neat
01:49 PM roycroft: maybe an lvl beam at the front and back going across the 14' span, and one more in the middle, then the longitudanal beams would go between those, so i would not need to lift a 24' beam in place
01:50 PM roycroft: i'd just be deaing with 12' beams
01:50 PM roycroft: i'll have to calculate the loads and see what works
01:50 PM roycroft: and since i don't have a pe stamp, i'd need to run my drawings by a practicing structural engineer who has that stamp before building
01:51 PM * roycroft knows he needs the stamp
01:51 PM bjorkintosh: *blink*. you're a Civil Engineer too??
01:51 PM roycroft: county building code does not require an engineer's stamp on certain structures, but the only roof framing they permit without a stamp is truss roofing
01:51 PM roycroft: no
01:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I was able to build that house without blueprints. I doubt I would get away with that now.
01:52 PM roycroft: i did get a mechanical engineering degree, but i have never worked professionally as an engineer
01:52 PM bjorkintosh: WAT??
01:52 PM bjorkintosh: that's a lot of work.
01:53 PM roycroft: and my engineering skills have deteriorated a lot since i got the degree almost 50 years ago
01:53 PM roycroft: so i can't really call myself an engineer
01:53 PM roycroft: i do some engineering work
01:53 PM roycroft: that's about the most generous and accurate way of saying it
01:54 PM roycroft: and it was just a bachelors degree
01:55 PM bjorkintosh: a BS is what most engineering work requires.
01:55 PM roycroft: at the time, it was pretty common for folks to get a master's degree before getting a pe stamp
01:56 PM roycroft: i don't know if that's still the case or not
01:56 PM bjorkintosh: a good number of my friends are engineers. some with PhDs. the ones with the PhDs seem the slowest.
01:56 PM bjorkintosh: not fault of their own.
01:57 PM bjorkintosh: it might be the field. the ones with Civil degrees don't get excited about much. the EEs and ChemEs are sharp as can be.
01:57 PM roycroft: anyway, no new roof for a while
01:57 PM roycroft: which gives me time to design it the way i want
01:58 PM roycroft: i was going to do a temporary roof - there are a couple spots that are on the verge of leaking now, and the roof sheathing is shot because someone waited too long to reshingle in the past, and did not reseath when they did
01:58 PM roycroft: i don't know how one can drive nails/staples into rotting roof sheathing, but someone did
01:59 PM roycroft: but the plan was to do some patching to buy time, build the shop extension, and redo the existing shop roof when the shop extension roof is built
01:59 PM roycroft: but the shop extension may get pushed off another year or two, so i want to get this roof done now, both so the shop is secure and dry, and to increase the storage and working space
02:00 PM roycroft: i'll have to demo part of the new roof when i built the extension, but not too much of it, and i'm willing to do that
04:26 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:28 PM JT-Mobile: hi ho from Margaritaville
05:12 PM xxcoder: clickspring video - tubes
05:21 PM Tom_L: all the gang show up?
05:32 PM xxcoder: man clickspring video was so good.
07:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I remember dad using this for a hunting knife
07:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/pQiLvv3ZBwLUwHM79
07:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> no clue where he got it from
08:49 PM * roycroft just woke up from an unplanned 4 hour nap
08:50 PM xxcoder: hopefully thats just regular nap and not fall over knock out
08:50 PM roycroft: well, neither are what i would call "regular"
08:50 PM roycroft: but there was no sudden or otherwise violent movements involved
08:51 PM xxcoder: thats good
09:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I think I am going to put up a 9ft section of shelving..
09:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> dad took it down in the shuffling of stuff - but I think I could put it up in a space that will be out of the way..
09:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I also have a 24x36 granite table that I might get rid of.. I don't know yet
09:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I already have a bigger granite table - and a big cast iron table that is blanchard grond
09:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> ground
09:22 PM JT-Mobile: yup
09:53 PM roycroft: aah
09:53 PM roycroft: pizza in the oven
09:53 PM xxcoder: oh thats good. ill be there as soon as its done
09:55 PM roycroft: you had better hurry - it only takes 10 minutes to bake
09:56 PM xxcoder: ok lemme get my flash boots on
09:56 PM roycroft: i am feeling so much better after that nap
09:57 PM xxcoder: nice
09:57 PM roycroft: like my back healed significantly during the nap
09:57 PM xxcoder: 5 days ago I had a nap, extremely rare for me and I didnt wake up like a zombie! much rarer
09:57 PM roycroft: it's not an energy thing, altough i do feel more energetic now
09:59 PM xxcoder: probably released some stresses when you was napping
10:01 PM xxcoder: your body probably held on to some tensions after staples was removed, till nap
10:05 PM roycroft: quite possibly
10:08 PM * roycroft settles in the comfy chair with some pizza slices and turn on the new clickspring video
10:08 PM xxcoder: you'll love it.
10:09 PM roycroft: the pizza, the video, or the comfy chair?
10:09 PM roycroft: or all three? :)
10:13 PM xxcoder: yes
10:14 PM xxcoder: well I did mean video specifically but it does apply to all 3.
10:24 PM roycroft: well the video was really good
10:25 PM roycroft: and i already knew the other two things were good
10:36 PM xxcoder: yep knew you would love it
