06:38 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> Morning
08:09 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it is a beutiful day in the neighborhood...
08:24 AM rdtsc-w: supposed to be nice here all week and next week, but the entire weekend cold
08:39 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I am still burning wood.. coldish here
09:02 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> but the shop is up to 65 degrees..
09:02 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> so - there should not be any sweating
09:28 AM Unterhausen: sky is a very threatening shade of blue here
09:32 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol
10:17 AM roycroft: it's a lovely sunny day here, albeit cool
10:17 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> warm and sunny here
10:18 AM roycroft: it's just above freezing right now, but no frost last night
10:18 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> 54F
10:30 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> 57F
10:42 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> got ya beat..... only 50 here now
10:45 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> 58F
10:45 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol
10:48 AM roycroft: it will warm up quickly here
10:49 AM JT-Shop: finally got rid of that medium kennel for $20...
10:50 AM bjorkintosh: how're you doing today roycroft?
11:05 AM Tom_L: 2 baby elephants at the zoo now
11:06 AM Tom_L: one of the mom's was pissed another one kept messin with it
11:07 AM Tom_L: sounded like an african safari
11:25 AM roycroft: i'm doing well, bjorkintosh, thanks
11:26 AM roycroft: other than a bit stressed about this email migration, but that is almost done
11:26 AM bjorkintosh: mending++ then!
11:28 AM roycroft: very much so
11:28 AM roycroft: i'm actually pondering heading to the transfer station after work today to unload the cut up hot tub that i was loading on my pickup when i had my mishap
11:29 AM roycroft: just 'cuz i'm sick of seeing it on the pickup every day, reminding me of what happened
11:29 AM roycroft: it's all fiberglass and expanded foam, in small chunks, so nothing weighs very much
11:30 AM bjorkintosh: so, I didn't expect to be so totally engrossed and completely captivated by all things networking so quickly.
11:30 AM roycroft: uh oh
11:30 AM bjorkintosh: cisco... it's a helluva drug I tell you.
11:30 AM roycroft: take it slow and easy
11:30 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> roycroft: get someone to help unload it
11:30 AM roycroft: there's a lot to learn
11:30 AM bjorkintosh: oh yes there is.
11:31 AM roycroft: roguish: i'd like to, but haven't found anyone
11:31 AM bjorkintosh: but so far, l2, l3? IPs, Ports, and Mac addresses.
11:31 AM roycroft: the kid i think might be interested hasn't been around for a while
11:31 AM bjorkintosh: roycroft: a craigslist 'help wanted' would do the trick.
11:31 AM roycroft: focus on the basic, bjorkintosh
11:32 AM roycroft: do not even think about dynamic routing or vlans at this point
11:32 AM bjorkintosh: roycroft: yes. one thing at a time is my intention.
11:32 AM roycroft: not until you get the fundamentals down
11:32 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> go to home depot parking lot...
11:34 AM bjorkintosh: roycroft: yes I'm patient. I'm starting with the CCST book. from there, CCNA, and then ... ??? Who knows!
11:36 AM roycroft: ccie takes years of training/learning
11:36 AM Tom_L: novell?
11:36 AM roycroft: if you think you want to go there, be forewarned
11:36 AM roycroft: it's a very difficult cert to get
11:36 AM roycroft: it takes ery clever people years
11:36 AM bjorkintosh: roycroft: I don't know that I'll get that far. this whole thing is just to finally learn networking properly.
11:37 AM bjorkintosh: Tom_L: novell is dead isn't it?
11:37 AM Tom_L: yeah
11:37 AM Tom_L: i had it installed for a while
11:38 AM bjorkintosh: so you had to put an 'n' in front of all your dos commands?
11:38 AM Tom_L: finally tossed out all the floppies
11:59 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> what? for novell?
11:59 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Nooooo!
12:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - I thought I had the novell boxes here still - but I guess I only have the apple talk addon..

12:05 PM * JT-Shop hears a nap calling his name
12:15 PM roycroft: my back heating pad should be here any time now
01:36 PM t4nk_fn: mmm I just had another look at my z-axis. I'm using some 3d printed coupler, and I noticed it was slipping
01:36 PM t4nk_fn: heh
01:37 PM t4nk_fn: I used some like these before, https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51zsLkLgkTS._AC_SX466_.jpg
01:37 PM t4nk_fn: but I guess I was scared that that springy bit would cause some backlash
01:38 PM t4nk_fn: I do have some collars on the treaded rod, but I'm not sure how tight I can set them without things running too tight
01:41 PM t4nk_fn: it would seem to me that if I put back such a metal coupler, and have my collars in place.. that a rotation from the stepper would always be transmitted correctly to the shaft
01:41 PM t4nk_fn: and that the springyness only matters if there weren't any collars in place
01:44 PM t4nk_fn: (.. the collars are also 3d printed ;) )
01:45 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Couplers.jpg
01:45 PM Tom_L: the left one would be a better choice
01:45 PM t4nk_fn: the one to th..
01:45 PM t4nk_fn: indeed I thought about that
01:48 PM t4nk_fn: heh, maybe I could sacrifice one... drill a hole from top to bottom.. and tap some thread and insert a bolt ;)
01:48 PM rdtsc-w: backlash is easily thwarted in the .ini file
01:48 PM t4nk_fn: that should keep it in place
01:49 PM t4nk_fn: well.. if the backlash is consistent, then yes
01:50 PM rdtsc-w: https://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/config/ini-config.html#_joint__lt_num_gt_section
01:51 PM Tom_L: i don't like using backlash comp unless it's absolutely necessary
01:52 PM t4nk_fn: indeed
01:52 PM Tom_L: i notice it it added into moves as a rapid (seems rapid) move ahead of the regular moves
01:53 PM Tom_L: i'm sure someone will correct me if that's not the case but that was my observation
01:56 PM Tom_L: it mentions 'jerk' in ^^ that link
01:56 PM xxcoder: comps should be last and final step, rather than fix bad previous work
01:59 PM t4nk_fn: I'll put a metal coupler back, and check my collars, see how that goes
01:59 PM roycroft: i've been reading lately that when folks upgrade from stepper motors to servo motors they quickly find out how sloppy their ball screws are
02:00 PM Tom_L: my sherline had hard couplers and i never noticed any alignment issues
02:00 PM Tom_L: https://www.nbk1560.com/en-US/resources/coupling/article/choosing-coupling/?SelectedLanguage=en-US
02:00 PM t4nk_fn: if only you could monitor the exact position of the bit somehow
02:02 PM Tom_L: glass scales
02:06 PM t4nk_fn: ( I was testing some hall sensor I mounted, before I noticed the slipping)
02:06 PM t4nk_fn: also I
02:07 PM t4nk_fn: d never heard of glass scales ;)
02:07 PM Tom_L: basically accurate linear scales
02:09 PM t4nk_fn: yeah, I guess I was trying to do the same thing, but those existing ones are probably way more precise
02:09 PM t4nk_fn: I would have been happy already if I could catch any initation of motion at the highest resolution
02:10 PM t4nk_fn: *sigh* but that slipping is just horrible and I need to fix that first
02:11 PM Rab: I think the spring-style couplers are actually pretty rigid, unless you apply torque outside of what the motor can probably muster.
02:12 PM Tom_L: yeah that's where you run into trouble with them
02:12 PM Tom_L: i was afraid on my new mill if i screwed up and hit something i would snap one
02:13 PM Tom_L: although i'd probably have other problems anyway
02:15 PM t4nk_fn: If the collars are not in place, I guess those things would stretch and shrink too
02:32 PM JT-Shop: yup the 0 backlash spring looking coupling is the best for cnc
02:32 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> agreed
02:54 PM t4nk_fn: mmmm those linear scales aren't even that expensive
03:01 PM roycroft: they will be soon, at least in the usa
03:05 PM Rab: I was researching Heidenhain scales and was surprised to find AliExpress glass scales that were really pretty cheap for the advertised resolution.
03:48 PM t4nk_fn: wellwell.. I just connected everything back up, and I've been testing with the sensor I made
03:48 PM t4nk_fn: I must say it's not that bad at all
03:50 PM t4nk_fn: there's different regions, but on some I can read almost up to 2mv per movement
03:51 PM t4nk_fn: I wonder if I can opamp the signal a bit
03:52 PM t4nk_fn: and then design a better mount which I can adjust.. heh, it's not looking too bad at all
05:10 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:57 PM roycroft: nice
05:57 PM roycroft: rockler bandy clamp = $8
05:58 PM roycroft: harbor freight spring clamp =$2, plus $0.50 worth of an inner tube
05:58 PM roycroft: roycroft bandy clamp = $2.50
08:56 PM _unreal_: transfering files via bluetooth painfully slow
11:04 PM roycroft: probably the folks who are interested are in bed by now, but i can report that this new heating pad works great
11:04 PM xxcoder: nice
