12:19 AM roycroft: solidcam is used by a lot of folks
12:33 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> I have the maker offer as I'm hobbyist
12:33 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> So it's NC shop floor programmer

05:05 AM lcnc-relay: <erik81nz@> hi. I'm trying to install linuxcnc_2.9.4-amd64.hybrid.iso and it booted into it but then during installation it got to a step where it says it fails to find the installation media? This is off a usb stick that it booted from. I've checked the sha256 and it doesn't match what it says it should be on the installation guide. I tried re-downloading and it was the same as my first download. any advice?
05:05 AM Tom_L: look for a 2.9.3 iso then upgrade to 2.9.4
05:07 AM Tom_L: if not, I'd follow ^^ that path
05:08 AM lcnc-relay: <erik81nz@> ok, thanks.
05:13 AM Tom_L: buildbot2 would have the current build .deb but I don't have the link to it here
05:24 AM lcnc-relay: <erik81nz@> I've got it working. Using the same usb that failed before but I wrote the image to it using DD mode in rufus instead of rufus' recommended hybrid mode.

10:30 AM backup-log: lcnc-relay: Today's Log https://www.tjfhome.net/irclog/%23linuxcnc/2025-04-12.html
10:32 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> crisis averted... a reboot brought down my logging server. seems back up now 🙂
11:30 AM roycroft: hi folks
11:30 AM roycroft: happy saturday
11:31 AM JT-MShop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdFZqzO1naA
11:31 AM JT-MShop: almost got ran over the other day
11:33 AM rdtsc: yikes, he wasn't gonna stop either!
11:35 AM JT-MShop: nope, he would have ran me over if I didn't back up
11:35 AM JT-MShop: lucky for me no one was behind me
11:35 AM bjorkintosh: not cool.
11:37 AM rdtsc: What the "truck" ;)
11:45 AM JT-MShop: I just sent in a complaint to the trucking company
11:46 AM JT-MShop: off to Durso Hills to meet up with the Corvette Renegades
12:04 PM roycroft: yeah
12:04 PM roycroft: there are a lot of tight turns in eugene in the industrial area
12:05 PM roycroft: unfortunately our signal lights are totally controlled by mag sensors in the roads
12:05 PM roycroft: if i pull up in a left turn lane and don't pull all the way up to the line the left turn signal will never turn green, so when there is truck traffic i try to pull up to trigger it, then back up a bit
12:06 PM roycroft: but that often doesn't work because of other cars just dying to become attached to my rear bumper
12:06 PM roycroft: i've had many close calls like that
12:07 PM roycroft: i've also been flipped off by truckers many times for sitting at the line with no option to back ukp
12:08 PM * roycroft thinks a big dose of simmah down is almost always in order when driving
01:16 PM xxcoder: JT-MShop: wow thats good one for idiotsincar reddit.
01:16 PM xxcoder: insane.
01:51 PM rdtsc: Weds morning on the way to work, a "miltary green" dodge challenger flew past me, jockeying between cars at 100MPH or more. Not even 20 seconds later, saw them on an exit ramp brake-check the car behind them - apparently not seeing the 18-wheeler behind them - all 18 wheels locked up and smoking as I drove past... ppl are nuts
01:58 PM xxcoder: yeah. some people drive like theyre racing with everyone else and theyre at last place
02:06 PM bjorkintosh: people _really_ are nuts. not enough meds, or took too many.
02:06 PM bjorkintosh: I didn't notice it when I was much younger but mental problems are rather pervasive.
02:06 PM bjorkintosh: it's almost the norm in many circles.
02:12 PM rdtsc: I guess that's a little (taboo, inconsiderate, prodigious etc) for me to say ("ppl are nuts") but there was absolutely no reason for that - that person simply doesn't need to drive - ever again.
02:21 PM bjorkintosh: rdtsc: I see it all around me though.
02:33 PM * roycroft passe the simmah down pills around
02:34 PM roycroft: i had a great moment coming home thursday night, though
02:34 PM roycroft: i'm driving on a country road, with a speed limit of 55mph
02:35 PM roycroft: right behind me is an orange sports car (i'm not a car person and don't know what kind it was), following a bit too close
02:35 PM roycroft: i was doing 62, btw, which is the average speed on that road
02:35 PM roycroft: we get to a little town where the speed limit dropped to 35mph, so i slowed down to 35mph
02:36 PM roycroft: orange car slams on the brakes and pulls off the road to avoid hitting me
02:36 PM roycroft: i drive past the cop sitting in the parking lot, who pulls out behind me
02:36 PM roycroft: drive through town at 35, until i get to the 55mph sign, at which case i accelerated
02:37 PM roycroft: meanwhile, orange car had pulled back on the road, behind the cop (in a marked car with mars lights)
02:37 PM roycroft: decided to pass the cop and me, which he did at high speed
02:37 PM roycroft: of course the cops lights came on instantly and i slowed down to let him pass me and stop the orange car
02:38 PM * roycroft loves instant karma
02:53 PM bjorkintosh: at an old shop I worked at, they had attitude adjustment pills in the first aid box.
02:53 PM bjorkintosh: it was candy.
03:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol
03:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> arsenic
04:25 PM roycroft: and old lace?
05:56 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:07 PM bjorkintosh: always. always old lace.
06:27 PM JT-MShop: on the way home yesterday a cop lit up his lights behind me and I thought oh shit I must have been going a bit fast
06:27 PM JT-MShop: then he passed me up to pull over a truck that passed by me a bit before
06:28 PM Tom_L: always good to be home
06:28 PM Tom_L: you seem to be lucky that way
06:29 PM xxcoder: lol when I was still driving for less than a year, I was driving down dark main road, then cop suddenly drove out of store parking lot, and lit up. I slowed down to stop, only for cop to get around and go to other store parking lot lol
06:30 PM xxcoder: sure made my heart skip
08:06 PM roycroft: well, the going is slow, because i cannot operate the shaper origin for more than about 10 minutes at a go, but i got the first of the raised letter carvings done today
08:06 PM roycroft: and it came out really well
08:06 PM roycroft: when i am able to sand down the fuzzies i'll take a pic
08:06 PM xxcoder: nice!
08:06 PM roycroft: i do not think i can make money making signs with the origin, but i never intended it for that
08:06 PM roycroft: even when i'm back to full strength/ability it will take too long
08:07 PM xxcoder: from what I hear its one of easiest ways to make side money
08:07 PM roycroft: but until i have a bigger cnc router it will make do
08:07 PM xxcoder: you will have mini one running evenually to help it along
08:08 PM roycroft: yes, hopefully quite soon, but that one is too small for most woodworking projects
08:08 PM roycroft: i intend to use it mainly for making non-ferrous metal parts and engravings
08:08 PM xxcoder: nice indeed
08:09 PM roycroft: i can almost reach the linuxcnc controller hardware with a step stool, but it's still an overhead reach with that, and i don't think i'm up to that yet
08:09 PM roycroft: but if my friend comes up to help me with some other things soon i'll have him get it down
08:15 PM roycroft: it felt really good working in the shop for a couple hours today on a shop project, not something for the house
08:16 PM roycroft: until last week i hadn't used the shaper origin in over a year
08:16 PM roycroft: it's good both from a healing perspective and a settling into the new house perspective
08:18 PM Tom_L: no more pesky neighbor kids
08:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I am sore. Mom is feeling better and she moved wood all day.. She was wiped and already in bed.
08:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Kids and I pulled the 16' 2X12's treated out field. That will be the backbone of the tree house. (dad made the side racks for the trailer and made each side out of 2 - 2X12's the thing was so heavy you need a tractor to install them..
08:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> so it is being re-purposed
08:25 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> kids took the bolts out - so we could stack them to dry
08:25 PM roycroft: well there are, but they are 2 and 3
08:25 PM roycroft: and just age-pesky
08:26 PM roycroft: not delinquent pesky
08:26 PM roycroft: the 2 year old is a fearless scooter
08:26 PM roycroft: he runs away from home every chance he gets, and often runs to my place
08:26 PM roycroft: i have to be careful not to have things laying about that could hurt him
08:27 PM roycroft: but i'll take that kind of pesky every time vs. the neighbor kids near the old house
08:27 PM roycroft: skunkworks8841: matt cremona posted an urban logging video today
08:27 PM roycroft: he went out to get the log and found the whole thing was hollow in the middle
08:28 PM roycroft: he took it anyway, but it's unsuitable for slabs/timbers
08:29 PM roycroft: so he's planning on using it upright as a pedestal to build a tree house on for his kits
08:29 PM Tom_L: teach him woodworking
08:29 PM roycroft: he'll put a ladder in the middle and carve a doorway for them to get into the log
08:29 PM roycroft: matt makes his living making woodworking videos and selling furniture kits
08:30 PM roycroft: there's not much i'd be able to teach him
08:30 PM Tom_L: the pesky one
08:30 PM roycroft: i can't wait to see the treehouse build
08:30 PM roycroft: oh
08:30 PM roycroft: maybe in a dozen years or so :)
08:32 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pzu8KTM2UU8
08:33 PM Tom_L: https://www.ebay.com/itm/115683467871
08:33 PM Tom_L: i had one of those
08:33 PM Tom_L: that one looks all rusted
08:34 PM xxcoder: ohh fun blondihack
08:45 PM roycroft: last week's was pretty good
08:45 PM xxcoder: yeah
08:45 PM roycroft: i'm glad i haven't caught the model engine bug
08:45 PM roycroft: that's pretty fiddly work
08:45 PM xxcoder: me too lol
08:46 PM roycroft: i have a difficult decision to make regarding a lathe
08:47 PM roycroft: i need a new lathe, and was not unhappy to get rid of the old one - i need one that's in better shape and a bit smaller
08:47 PM roycroft: but i don't have the cash to spare for one right now, and i don't have room for it until the shop extension is built, whenever that can happen
08:48 PM roycroft: i'm afraid they're about to go up in price by 50% or more, though, so it may be prudent to get one now and leave it in its crate until i have time and space to deal with it
08:52 PM Tom_L: wood or metal?
08:54 PM roycroft: metal
08:54 PM roycroft: i have a wood lathe
08:54 PM roycroft: most of the ones in the class i want are made in taiwan, not china, but in 90 days there will be massive tariffs on taiwanese goods as well, or maybe there won't be
08:55 PM roycroft: it's the only piece of machinery i need at this point
08:55 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> He lives in the cities.. I have a woodworking friend that has asked him questions or such. Was so surprised he answered. Dad watched a lot of his videos
08:55 PM roycroft: i'm looking at a 10x22 - that would be the perfect size for me
08:55 PM Tom_L: mine is pretty well shot
08:55 PM roycroft: matt's a really nice guy
08:55 PM roycroft: and very approachable
08:55 PM Tom_L: i've had it for probably 40 yrs and got it used
08:56 PM roycroft: i've emailed matt a couple times about things not directly related to his channel or his business, and very kindly answered
08:57 PM roycroft: https://www.precisionmatthews.com/products/pm-1022v-pm-1030v?variant=41014174285899
08:57 PM roycroft: that is what i would get if i had the cash and the space today
08:57 PM Tom_L: looks decent overall
08:58 PM roycroft: in its class it's really nice
08:58 PM roycroft: two features that most small lathes don't have that it does are a camlock chuck and power cross feed
08:58 PM xxcoder: hf have someting similiar but vastly cheaper and inferior in quality.
08:58 PM Tom_L: i wouldn't call those lathes
08:59 PM roycroft: and the screws are in actual us customary units, so the dials don't go to 1250 thousandts, with accumulating error
08:59 PM Tom_L: i looked at those quite some time ago
08:59 PM roycroft: they are 1000 thousandths fairly precisely
08:59 PM roycroft: a watchmaker's lathe is a lathe
09:00 PM Tom_L: i put indicators on mine since i don't trust it
09:00 PM roycroft: yes, of course
09:00 PM roycroft: but the increased accuracy is important when cutting threads with a single-point tool
09:01 PM roycroft: there's a grizzly g0602 that is similar to the precision matthews for about $600 less, but it does not have the power cross feed and it has a threaded spindle
09:02 PM roycroft: most of the cheap 10x22 lathes are more similar to the grizzly
09:02 PM roycroft: anyway, for what i do that would be the perfect size
09:02 PM roycroft: and it would certainly be more accurate than my old, worn-out jet 12x36 was
09:03 PM roycroft: my concern is that when i'm read for it it might cost <$5k
09:03 PM roycroft: er, >$5k
09:03 PM roycroft: which would be more difficult to do
09:08 PM infornography: I have a Chinese 8x16 with one of those variable speed motors, supposedly 1HP but it really struggles at lower RPM. I think I'd rather have lower gearing than pwm for speed.
09:08 PM roycroft: most of those motors struggle at low speed
09:09 PM roycroft: the jet had a back gear, and that was really nice
09:10 PM roycroft: that's how it could go down to 60rpm and still have a lot of torque
09:10 PM roycroft: smaller lathes rarely have a back gear
09:10 PM infornography: >_> machines are expensive, it's depressing looking at them
09:11 PM roycroft: i'm pretty well set for machines, other than a metal lathe
09:11 PM roycroft: and i still need to build a mid-size cnc router, but i have a lot of the parts for that already
10:35 PM mrec: a friend of mine spotted 3 cnc lathes in a warehouse we're trying to figure out who those belong to
10:37 PM mrec: https://i.snipboard.io/4S0OyX.jpg
10:38 PM mrec: https://i.snipboard.io/P3pTbY.jpg
10:38 PM mrec: https://i.snipboard.io/bmwgq0.jpg
10:38 PM xxcoder: looks somewhat decent
10:39 PM xxcoder: pne had light status removed
10:39 PM xxcoder: might have been spare parts
10:41 PM mrec: ya we are checking that would fit in perfectly into the business we're trying to take over
10:42 PM mrec: my current plan is aside of the Mitsubishi 2 manual mills can be re-fitted with LinuxCNC
10:43 PM mrec: the shop is doing multiple parts but there's a labour shortage, and the income doesn't justify to hire a hand-cranker
10:44 PM mrec: the son of the previous owner doesn't have a direction where to go with all that but he knows his situation is not good if he would leave that place
10:46 PM mrec: I'm working on getting my products into that shop, and earning money through my parts; So the existing structures can keep going and they can have their basic cost covered at least
10:46 PM mrec: 2 days ago we got the keys to the factory
10:46 PM xxcoder: good luck :)
10:47 PM mrec: I will definitely need some of it ...
10:49 PM mrec: the good part of it I can move my DIY mill and lathe to that factory it will return some space in my apartment, the son of the shop owner can practice CNC with it before I show him how to deal with the Mitsubishi CNC which I recovered at that place
10:51 PM mrec: ah regarding the light you mentioned it looks like they broke it it's lying flat on the machine it seems?
10:56 PM xxcoder: no, it seem to be missing
10:57 PM xxcoder: hats why I was wondering if it was part out machine to fix others
10:58 PM xxcoder: looking at picure again, its bent over?
10:58 PM mrec: https://i.snipboard.io/P3pTbY.jpg
10:59 PM mrec: it looks ripped out
10:59 PM mrec: and laying flat
10:59 PM xxcoder: yeah my possibility is less likely then
