06:35 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> is this so interesting that everything has to be logged 🙂
06:36 AM Tom_L: Absolutely
06:37 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> short compilation: moin, moin, 42°F, morning, nothing logged 😇 😂
06:38 AM Tom_L: heh
06:39 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> there is also a backup log 😉
06:39 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> backup-log
06:39 AM backup-log: lcnc-relay: Today's Log https://www.tjfhome.net/irclog/%23linuxcnc/2025-04-08.html
07:06 AM rdtsc-w: Logging makes little sense on discord. But on IRC, every time you /join #linuxcnc, there is zero history - it starts up blank. So checking the log is how we see what people were talking about while we were gone. :)
07:57 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I really just want to make sure you guys are not talking about me..
07:57 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> only in the private chats 😱
08:18 AM bjorkintosh: hahahah
09:02 AM bjorkintosh: I'm a Reynolds Wrap man myself.
09:19 AM rdtsc-w: gold foil hat would be best... then any radiation that passes through would be better for you. (kidding, it would actually be worse! 'breeder' helmet...)
09:38 AM bjorkintosh: gold foil... look at Mr Moneybags here!
09:51 AM * roycroft is more a lead balloon kind of person
09:52 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I found a bucket full of silver contacts.. wonder what those are worth..
09:52 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> dad must have been squerreling them away
09:52 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> maybe .7 cents a gram.. according to the internet.
10:00 AM roycroft: silver and gold are at near all-time highs right now
10:00 AM roycroft: silver took a little dive last week but it's going up again
10:01 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> this isn't pure from the reading.. It usually has a small amount of cadmium in it
10:02 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (so you don't want to melt it down - pretty toxic)
10:09 AM roycroft: group 12 elements are generally nasty
10:09 AM roycroft: zinc, cadmium, mercury
10:09 AM roycroft: all quite toxic
10:09 AM roycroft: also all quite useful
10:10 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:20 AM bjorkintosh: roycroft: but zinc is ingestible.
10:20 AM roycroft: yeah, zinc is the least toxic
10:21 AM bjorkintosh: poison is in the dosage. so is the medicine.
10:21 AM bjorkintosh: and the placebo. and the nocebo too!
10:21 AM roycroft: but don't try to tell that to a dumbass welder who welds on galvanized metal without proper ventilation and a proper respirator
10:47 AM rdtsc-w: yeah SW; filing/sanding silverish electrical contacts is a bad idea because of cadmium risk. If those must be reconditioned, use positive ventilation/respirator and rubber gloves. Same with shiny gold-color plating (chromate, especially industrial) - bad news
10:48 AM rdtsc-w: some bolts are "AN" grade, Aircraft Navy, gold/silver plated, and contain nasties - never hold in mouth
10:51 AM rdtsc-w: touching undisturbed metal is fine; just don't then touch a sandwich. All intake comes from inhalation or, ingestion. Can adsorb through skin only in "metal salt" form, when reacted with acids
03:17 PM roycroft: i started routing the raised lettering with my shaper origin at lunch time today
03:17 PM roycroft: it's going to work out great, but it's really slow going
03:21 PM xxcoder: I guess its smaller than area of shaper
03:21 PM xxcoder: otherwise it would have no surface evenually
03:22 PM xxcoder: randomly wondered about how well it would do it for fairly rigid rubber for stampers
03:24 PM roycroft: about as well as a cnc router
03:24 PM roycroft: if the rubber is frozen when you put it on the bed and you can route it fast it should work ok
03:24 PM roycroft: as soon as the rubber starts warming up you lose
03:25 PM xxcoder: fun. wonder if can make it last longer by having dry ice there, overgassing into rubber
03:35 PM roycroft: that might work well
03:35 PM roycroft: or dry ice underneath an aluminium fixture plate
04:04 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:06 PM Tom_L: xx, you'd be better off milling the letters then pouring urethane in it
04:07 PM rdtsc-w: don't forget the release agent :)
04:08 PM Tom_L: shore 40 or more
04:08 PM xxcoder: tom makes sense
04:09 PM Tom_L: And..... don't forget the release agent :)
04:09 PM xxcoder: lol
04:09 PM Tom_L: I did some wheels that way
04:25 PM Tom_L: 81°F
04:33 PM roycroft: yeah, for making a rubber stamp machining a negative mold and filling it would probably be best
04:34 PM roycroft: i'm doing this lettering in wood, and unfortunately i can't pour wood into a mold
04:34 PM xxcoder: techinically you can, using tar from wood lol
04:34 PM xxcoder: but yeah
05:17 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> roycroft: You definitely can, it's called sawdust mixed with glue.
05:18 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> I'll see myself out.
05:25 PM xxcoder: 🤦‍♀
05:26 PM xxcoder: man weather is insane here now. heavy rain to completely clear, and back
05:44 PM roycroft: it's been overcast here all day with a light sprinkle or two
05:46 PM roycroft: i was back out in the shop working on the lettering thing and all of a sudden it stopped
05:46 PM roycroft: i had my shaper origin and my extractor plugged into the same power strip, which popped a breaker
05:47 PM roycroft: i manually lifted the spindle, fixed the power arrangement, turned it back on, touched off z again, and went back to work
05:48 PM roycroft: it remembered right where it was cutting, and it knew its location
05:48 PM roycroft: i thought that's how it worked, but it's really good to confirm that
05:48 PM roycroft: as long as the part does not move in relation to the domino tape, the origin can resume after power cycling
05:56 PM roycroft: operating the origin is probaby not the best thing for me to be doing for a prolonged period of time right now
05:57 PM roycroft: i can feel it in my back, so i stopped
05:57 PM roycroft: besides, i need a 1/16" cutter to finish the job, and i don't have one
05:57 PM roycroft: at least not a straight one - i do have a tapered one but i don't want to mess with the calcs on that right now
06:22 PM roycroft: this little job tells me that a proper cnc router is important
06:23 PM roycroft: i'm working on a test piece now and it's going to take over an hour to do this lettering on the test piece
06:23 PM roycroft: i have 8 pieces to do in production when the test is done, so that's over a full day of work
06:23 PM roycroft: a cnc router might also take a full day, but i would not be steering it the whole time
06:24 PM roycroft: i did not buy the shaper origin for this kind of work to begin with, but it's good to get a sense of what it can and cannot do efficiently
06:24 PM roycroft: rather, to confirm the sense i already had
06:30 PM _unreal_: xxcoder, lol
06:31 PM _unreal_: sigh
06:34 PM _unreal_: cnc router full day what are you =milling?
06:34 PM _unreal_: arg. dont like the keybaord on this laptop
06:35 PM _unreal_: baaaa and the screen is very small. I had to get my glasses
06:35 PM _unreal_: its fine for me doing CAD work. but when it comes to dealing with text its a struggle
06:36 PM _unreal_: maybe i'm getting old
06:36 PM _unreal_: sigh
06:37 PM _unreal_: there we go just bumped up the size of the font
06:37 PM _unreal_: ............ did I say that out loud
06:40 PM _unreal_: what is shaper orgin?
06:40 PM _unreal_: regarding to purchasing?
06:40 PM _unreal_: I'm a little lost
06:40 PM _unreal_: is this related to a stand alone tool or something to do with the cnc ?
06:41 PM _unreal_: just trying to understand
06:57 PM roycroft: shaper origin is a hand-held cnc router
07:02 PM roycroft: a proper cnc router would probably run twice as fast or more
07:02 PM roycroft: especially since the shaper was being driven today by a person who recently had back surgery, and is moving rather slowly
07:03 PM roycroft: although i think i was mostly keeping up with the machine
07:03 PM roycroft: and i was doing it intelligently - roughing out what i could with a 1/4" cutter, then switching to 1/8" for the final passes
07:04 PM roycroft: well, semi-final passes, as i need a 1/16" cutter to get the detail i need
07:05 PM _unreal_: OHHHH one of those one's that has an camera and see's shapes as an origin
07:06 PM roycroft: yes
07:06 PM _unreal_: so semi manual semi CNC
07:06 PM roycroft: it has a fiduciary grid that look like dominos and the cameras index the tool to the grid
07:06 PM _unreal_: ya I know someone who has used one of those for some years
07:06 PM _unreal_: now
07:06 PM _unreal_: ya
07:06 PM roycroft: i did not buy it to do this kind of work on a regular basis
07:06 PM _unreal_: not perfect but with a good steady hand good
07:06 PM roycroft: it can actually hold a couple thousandths if you're smart and careful when operating it
07:07 PM roycroft: which is more than good enough for wood
07:07 PM _unreal_: yes.. as I just said :)
07:07 PM roycroft: since a piece of fine grit sandpaper can smooth out a 0.002" wrinkle in a second
07:07 PM _unreal_: yep
07:10 PM _unreal_: I'm suprised they are not used more in my industry on sight
07:10 PM _unreal_: to be honist
07:11 PM _unreal_: its killing me, I'm dieing to be part of the early visit to the new universal studios theme park experience for the new partk. EPIC universe.
07:12 PM _unreal_: still waiting on the probate relase of the inheritance money. SIGH.
07:12 PM _unreal_: my dads house the new owner has totally gutted
07:13 PM roycroft: that happens
07:13 PM roycroft: probably best to not go near it any more
07:13 PM roycroft: just wait for the money and move on
07:14 PM _unreal_: any more?
07:14 PM _unreal_: it has not even opened yet
07:14 PM _unreal_: the offical open is may 22
07:15 PM roycroft: your father's house i'm talking about
07:15 PM _unreal_: oh
07:15 PM _unreal_: well I cant help that. my daughter still is in school so there are some aspects that are indirectly keeping me tied to the area
07:16 PM _unreal_: that I have no choice
07:17 PM _unreal_: its killing me I have 6 new clients and I cant do anything with them becuase I dont have a house or my mahcines setup
07:17 PM _unreal_: !@#%$@$%@#$!5
07:23 PM roycroft: that's kind of my situation
07:23 PM roycroft: i have all sorts of stuff to do
07:23 PM roycroft: but i keep getting bogged down by moving and injuries
07:23 PM roycroft: my shop is finally somewhat functional, though
07:23 PM roycroft: i have power, compressed air, dust collection, and room to move around
07:33 PM _unreal_: I'm drowning it tools
07:33 PM _unreal_: all in storage
07:34 PM _unreal_: killing me I have like $20k in metal working tools alone all in storage
07:35 PM _unreal_: I just want to open my company back up and drowed in money again as I use to.
07:36 PM _unreal_: though above all I'm glad to be outt of that !#$!#$^!@#$ house finally
07:36 PM _unreal_: ish..... FREEEEE
07:38 PM _unreal_: at least you dont have to deal with being a reality star
07:38 PM _unreal_: I'm on YT, printrest, facebook and on and on everything dealing with the reality show I'm part of
07:43 PM roycroft: i have two cargo containers full of stuff in storage
07:44 PM * roycroft shuns social media, but when he finally gets his new woodworking business going, may need to dip a toe in that cesspool to get some publicity
07:46 PM _unreal_: consider your self lucky then
07:46 PM roycroft: it's not luck
07:46 PM roycroft: it's foresight and care
07:47 PM _unreal_: I was hired and the reality show grew around me
07:47 PM _unreal_: foresight was not part oof it
07:47 PM _unreal_: yacht kings
07:47 PM _unreal_: ugh
07:48 PM roycroft: i've done some radio and newspaper interviews, but never a tv interview
07:48 PM roycroft: i try to maintain a low profile
07:51 PM _unreal_: heh, I guess you know your somemthing when arabian prince seek you to do yacht work.
07:51 PM _unreal_: sigh
07:56 PM _unreal_: on the other hand I've sold my self to the realtors regarding future home purchase for my self and the sale of my dads home. I have a number of realtors that are interested in having me when ready to start making sales gifts. "thanks for using are firm"
07:56 PM _unreal_: cutting boards, stone entry way items.
07:57 PM _unreal_: roycroft, I would reccomend if yourr able setup a mill with the ability too mill stone. I've done it with my new mill and did as many projects as I could before I had to break it all donw.
07:57 PM _unreal_: I've already gotten a lot of interest.
07:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> well - about 15 minutes and an acetylene torch - and I have 2 oz of silver contacts..
07:59 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/5HSPYUo9nEvzo3iw6
07:59 PM _unreal_: nice
08:00 PM _unreal_: straight acet. torche?
08:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yes
08:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> comes in handy.. way hotter than propane
08:02 PM _unreal_: ya like map gas
08:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> which you can't get anymore
08:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> sucks
08:03 PM _unreal_: ?
08:03 PM _unreal_: no issue in USA
08:03 PM _unreal_: ... THEN AGAIN I have not looked for it recently
08:04 PM _unreal_: I think I have like 6 canisters left for hand torches
08:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it isn't real map gas.. it is just propane
08:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> someone bought the rights to the name
08:05 PM roycroft: so $60
08:05 PM roycroft: enough for a pound of coffee and a dozen eggs
08:06 PM _unreal_: ?
08:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/nPi8RB1YfTszZYDbA
08:06 PM _unreal_: good god
08:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> some are bigger
08:06 PM _unreal_: roy
08:07 PM roycroft: yes?
08:08 PM _unreal_: heh roy i was answering you with ? and good god
08:13 PM * roycroft is lost
08:13 PM roycroft: i think i need some dinner
08:35 PM * roycroft has burritos and is already feeling better
08:38 PM rdtsc_ is now known as rdtsc
