04:27 AM Tom_L: morning

04:57 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> odrive / odesc / xdrive
05:56 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> Morning
06:13 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> Hello
06:14 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> I'm finally doing tes cut on my lathe. I run a very basic program, in the end, i measure 52.9mm diameter instead of 52.8 in the gcode. How should i proceed to run the same gcode but tellling LCNC that the part was 0.1mm bigger (offset?)
06:16 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> news says lots of tornados/storms around JT's area...
06:20 AM JT-Cave: lots of rain and wind until sunday night
06:20 AM JT-Cave: some tornados northeast of me last night
06:21 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> wow, stay safe!
06:23 AM JT-Cave: we had lots of tornados a week ago that really tore up Poplar Bluff bad
06:24 AM JT-Cave: more damage than I've ever seen here from tornados
06:24 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> glad i live in Maine... 😉
06:28 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> though we are getting sleet and freezing rain, with thunder and lightening...
07:24 AM JT-Cave: looks like the heavy rain is south of us about 50 miles
07:25 AM JT-Cave: https://www.weather.gov/pah/Mar14-15_2025Severe
07:28 AM JT-Cave: wow 14 tornados that night
08:17 AM Poincare_ is now known as Poincare
08:47 AM * roycroft needs a coffee, but needs to have a rest after the work of getting out of bed first
08:49 AM rdtsc-w: I'd be totally lost without coffee
08:50 AM roycroft: my espresso machine is broken
08:50 AM roycroft: i've been slumming it an drinking drip brew for a while now
08:50 AM roycroft: maybe i'll work on that this weeken
08:50 AM roycroft: d
08:51 AM rdtsc-w: did switch back to paper filters though; apparently they filter out cholesterol-raising compounds of all things
08:54 AM roycroft: i'm using paper filters at the moment
09:05 AM * roycroft hopes he can still afford coffee once the price skyrockets
09:38 AM Rab_: skunkworks8841, nice round dial, it looks like it's seen some action.
09:39 AM Rab_ is now known as Rab
09:50 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yes - it is a 42? It was dropped off of a truck onces. (why we got it in the first place)
09:50 AM Rab: Ouch, what was the damage?
09:51 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lots of broken knobs and bent levers..
09:51 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> some are still broken and bent
09:51 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> but it works great
09:53 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I think the lead screw for the cross slide was bent - and it was missing or had a broken cross slide gib. Dad fixed that in the 80's
10:00 AM rdtsc-w: Inheritance Machining has some videos on trying to make a new cross slide lead screw... emphasis on trying
10:01 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yah - I think dad bought acme from somewhere.
10:01 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I think there is some extra under the lathe.
10:06 AM roycroft: abom79 has videos of that too
10:07 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> unless it is some odd thread - I don't know if I would ever try to make a leadscrew.
10:24 AM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
11:03 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> roycroft: hey, you made it to another day.....
11:08 AM roycroft: indeed, i did
11:08 AM roycroft: rough night, but the day is starting out very well
11:08 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> hang in there. slowly and easily
11:08 AM roycroft: yup
11:09 AM roycroft: i'm going out to the shop after work today
11:09 AM roycroft: i'm not sure what i'm going to do there, but i'll find some light work that i can do safely
11:09 AM roycroft: i think it will be good therapy
11:10 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> yeah, it is good therapy.... little by little.....
11:10 AM roycroft: i have a small job that i've been planning to do with my shaper origin for a shop fixture
11:10 AM roycroft: i'm thinking that might be something i can do
11:11 AM roycroft: it involves some raised lettering, and that's what i've been learning to set up with affinity designer
11:11 AM roycroft: i have the svg file now, so it's time to see of the origin likes it
11:12 AM roycroft: i'm convinced that recovery is at least as much mental as physical/medical, and my doctors agree with me
11:13 AM roycroft: the one i saw yesterday was surprised at how well i was doing - i was cleaned up and in street clothes, moving fairly freely
11:13 AM roycroft: he said that most patients with my surgery come in for their first post-op in night clothes, complaining of pain, and barely able to move
11:14 AM bjorkintosh: or. you just might be built tuff!
11:14 AM roycroft: if i were built tough i would not be injuring myself, i should think
11:15 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> the mental part is important. gotta stay positive....or the suffering just gets worse
11:16 AM roycroft: the doctor was trying to break the news to me that i have a spinal defect that makes me more prone to this type of injury, and expecting a bad reaction from me
11:16 AM roycroft: my reaction, though, was that would explain some of the problems i've had, and that i'm not just a klutz
11:17 AM bjorkintosh: hmm. so it's likely a physiological problem that some people are 'just a klutz'?
11:17 AM roycroft: sometimes
11:20 AM rdtsc-w: every teenager should try to "fetch two gallons of milk" using their bicycle (without any kind of rack or basket...) builds coordination lol
11:20 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> for my T12 compression fracture, I got a second opinion from UCSF. much better care than the first opinion. the PA I saw actually talked to me and showed me all the imaging, and felt my spine... also ordered a bone density exam, which showed a bit of weakening. since then I've been eating a calcium supplement tablet every day. Never broke any other bones.... blew the clavicle off the scapula once, but didn't break collar...
11:20 AM lcnc-relay: ... bone....bike crash
11:22 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> you should probably be eating some calcium too....can't hurt, just help out. this is what i'm doing... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RF1QQ4H?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_2

12:57 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I had burned some transformer coils out this winter (yah - I know) but I find out the actual wire is wrapped in fiberglass.. Yeck
12:57 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> so I though - I wonder if tubling would work. To bad I don't have a tumbler.. As I walk past the harbor freight cement mixer..
12:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> so - giving that a try with some gravel
12:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it is probably about 70 lbs worth of copper
12:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> so - worth the extra work
12:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I just don't want to touch it..
12:59 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> see if the thing runs for more than 10 minutes lol
01:00 PM Tom_L: burn it off
01:01 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it has already been through the furnace.. I don't know how much hotter I can make it.
01:01 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (sitting right on top of the fire)
01:01 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> wonder if a little water would help
01:01 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> too
01:03 PM Rab: There isn't a place that will buy it as-is? Or do you want the copper for raw material?
01:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> you get lower per pound if there is 'insulation' on it
01:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I think it might be working...
01:13 PM roycroft: tweakers have made recycling copper a lot more difficult
02:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> well - I think that works pretty well
02:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> not too much labor and the fibers get beaten off
02:01 PM roycroft: first shower in over a week - i feel like 1000% better
02:01 PM roycroft: i had a feeling that would work well for you, skunkworks8841
02:01 PM roycroft: and now your copper is worth about 5x as much
02:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> right
02:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> DId they take the drain pump off?
02:15 PM roycroft: yes
02:15 PM roycroft: the wound vac is completely gone
02:15 PM roycroft: there are still 50 staples in my back that come out on the 24th
02:15 PM roycroft: i'm not looking forward to that day
02:16 PM roycroft: i'm looking forward to it being done, though
02:20 PM Tom_L: staples aren't so bad
02:21 PM Tom_L: <- tries to encourage roycroft
02:21 PM Tom_L: are they leaving the extra hardware in?
02:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> dad had a bunch of staples taken out - the tool they use is pretty cool - I bet you will barely feel it
02:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it pulls them out in a way that they follow the arc they were put in
02:24 PM Tom_L: right
02:24 PM roycroft: i was told yesterday that some folks scream in agony on every staple removal, while others impatiently ask after it's all done when they're going to start
02:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol
02:24 PM roycroft: hopefully i'm in that latter group
02:25 PM Tom_L: depends how pain tolerant you are i suppose
02:25 PM roycroft: i think that the fact that i finished loading my pickup and secured the load with ratchet straps with a broken back is a sign that i'm at least somewhat pain tolerant
02:25 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> gives roycroft a stick to bite down on..
02:26 PM roycroft: it also indicates that i'm somewhat stupid
02:26 PM JT-Cave: reminds me of a paul simon song
02:26 PM JT-Cave: there must be 50 ways to leave your staples
02:26 PM roycroft: speaking of stupid
02:26 PM JT-Cave: you just take them out of the back jack
02:26 PM roycroft: affinity designer is somewhat stupid
02:27 PM roycroft: the doctor from yesterday said that when i get the back staples removed almost all the skin that they're in will be dead
02:28 PM roycroft: the ones in my head are a little more concerning
02:28 PM * roycroft generates a new svg for the shaper origin
02:31 PM rdtsc-w: not much skin on a head, very thin
02:33 PM roycroft: yeah, and it really hurt when they put the in
02:33 PM roycroft: i was pretty pissed off
02:33 PM roycroft: there was not a cut - just an abrasion
02:33 PM roycroft: and they told me it was 35mm in diameter
02:33 PM roycroft: so pretty small
02:33 PM roycroft: for that i got a dozen staples
02:34 PM roycroft: which i think is about a dozen too many
02:34 PM xxcoder: if its not a cut, then why was it put in?
02:34 PM roycroft: i can only guess that someone just got trained on the staple gun and wanted to play with it
02:35 PM Tom_L: maybe they're cheaper by the dozen
02:35 PM roycroft: they stopped at 8 and decided to go for more
02:36 PM Tom_L: so your back will look like a zipper when it heals
02:36 PM roycroft: probably
02:36 PM roycroft: i can't see my back
02:36 PM xxcoder: secret franksein
02:37 PM roycroft: and i think my days of hanging out at the beach sunbathing are pretty much done
02:37 PM xxcoder: tell them its war scar
02:37 PM roycroft: i also have no qualms about the 50ish staples in my back
02:38 PM roycroft: those are easily justifiable
02:38 PM Tom_L: well, it did seem to take your mind off the wrist
02:38 PM xxcoder: its nice way to mask pain at one spot, just add bigger pain other place
02:38 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/eso93HhGhYpUoGPr6
02:39 PM roycroft: my wrist is doing fine - fully healed
02:39 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> now add a little cement - copper/fiberglass re-inforce concrete...
02:39 PM Tom_L: let them restock staples before you try anything else
02:40 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> one coil done - that is the second.
02:40 PM roycroft: i have a montgomery ward cement mixer that is very similar to yours
02:40 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I don't know why dad bought it.. Probably just cheap enough.. He has a 1/4 yard? mixer that goes on the back of the tractor. But needs a little tlc
02:41 PM roycroft: i debated whether to move it to the new place or not, as i probably won't be doing a lot of concrete work, but in the end i did, as i figured it could be used for other things as well
02:41 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it works as a tumbler.. 🙂
02:41 PM roycroft: mine needs a little cleaning up and a new motor, but a probably have a spare motor
02:41 PM roycroft: mixing garden soil is something it can do
02:41 PM xxcoder: can use concerete for bunch of artian stuff too, like vase, etc
02:41 PM roycroft: and stripping wire, i see
02:42 PM roycroft: well that's part of it
02:42 PM xxcoder: and enriching concerete with glass fibers, which is definitely what some people do
02:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I should have taken a before picture.. IT was wrapped (after burning) a really fine fiberglass - like thread
02:42 PM roycroft: i want to make some concrete raised garden beds, and a little mixer like that is perfect for those small pours
02:42 PM roycroft: it seemed worth the effort to move
02:43 PM roycroft: but now it is sitting in my driveway indefinitely
02:43 PM rdtsc-w: use that concrete in hollow CNC forms = super-rigid
02:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it comes off easy - but to do it by had would have been many yards of scraping and - you would want ppe
02:43 PM roycroft: i was planning on cutting the grass this weekend, tidying up the back yard a bit, and moving the concrete mixer to the back yard
02:43 PM xxcoder: well your idea seem to work out very well
02:43 PM roycroft: all that's on hold for a couple months or longer now
02:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> goes back to cleaning enought to get the car on the car lift..
02:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> few more days hopefully
02:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> and maybe another trip - this time cast iron - to recycling
02:47 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I was actually suprised the cement mixer worked - it has been sitting out side for a long long time
02:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it was stuck - but a twirl of the drum and it took right off
02:52 PM roycroft: those things are pretty tough
02:54 PM roycroft: mine's been sitting outdoors, uncovered, for at least 25 years
03:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> some pretty big wasp nests in it
03:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> wow - that worked really well
03:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the second coil is almost done
03:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the only real pain is it gets wound up in the mixing paddles
03:15 PM rdtsc-w: can just cut the wire
03:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yep
03:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> big linesman plires.. works great
03:16 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> some of this copper is probably 1/4X1/16
03:17 PM Rab: What was the transformer?
03:17 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I don't remember.. IT was on the cincinati lathe. It might have been to run the spindle motor
03:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> there are a few more transformers around here that I could probably get rid of
05:58 PM roycroft: eveyrthing is baby steps these days
05:58 PM roycroft: i got my shaper origin set up, but i was feeling pretty sore by then
05:58 PM roycroft: i need to make a fixture to do this job, so that's another project
05:59 PM roycroft: my svg is kind of ok, but the aspect ratio is off, so i guess i have something to do in affinity designer about that
05:59 PM roycroft: still, it was good to go out to the shop and at least think about doing some work there
06:01 PM * roycroft will chill and watch shaper sessions live in the meantime
07:25 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it is a start
07:25 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> well - the copper was #1 - so 3.10 a pound. so yay
07:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the guy didn't think it was copper - bent too easy.. LOL - I said - well it has been annealed in a fire..
07:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> he had to grind on it to be sure
07:26 PM Tom_L: how much was the propane & electricity to remove the insul?
07:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> 2 hours of tumbling.. It was thrown in the wood outside wood furnace in the winter..
07:27 PM Tom_L: good resource management sir :)
07:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol, Thanks 🙂
07:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the 2 coils have been sitting outside since then... I was kind hoping just snow and rain would clean them up.
07:35 PM _unreal_: sigh
08:19 PM xxcoder: primative tech very good video today
08:19 PM roycroft: i'm watching some videos now
08:19 PM roycroft: i just changed the cat box and fed the cats
08:19 PM roycroft: usually a quick job
08:20 PM roycroft: i've been putting it off since i got home, and it took me more like 45 minutes and i'm totally exhausted
08:20 PM xxcoder: hope you enjoyed that vismach bideo lol
08:20 PM roycroft: the cats are happy now
08:20 PM roycroft: and to be clear: i have fed them since i came home
08:21 PM roycroft: i just avoided the cat box
08:21 PM roycroft: the simplest, smallest things are so hard right now
08:22 PM roycroft: but getting easier
09:28 PM lcnc-relay: <ntulinux2467@> hello!
09:33 PM xxcoder: hi
09:42 PM roycroft: well, life continues to improve
09:42 PM roycroft: riker has a beard now
09:42 PM roycroft: st:tng will start getting better now
09:43 PM xxcoder: yep. show grew a beard then
09:43 PM xxcoder: (its orgin of saying)
09:44 PM roycroft: a benefit of my convalescence
09:44 PM roycroft: i've been watching a lot of tv, and got through the rough beginning of tng pretty fast
09:47 PM roycroft: i think the only reason it survived the first season was because people were so despserate for a new star trek series
