01:54 AM Deejay: re
02:21 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> hello
03:12 AM * Deejay dives into mesa & pncconf
03:40 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> meisterdippel@: did you move forward on the datron interface?
04:07 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> vibram@: no 😦
04:17 AM hk2730: soft limit set machine zero in centre of bad
06:43 AM rdtsc-w: morning, re: ruby laser - best to place rod and straight flash lamp at the two foci of an elipse, such that all light rays make it to the rod https://softschools.com/math/pre_calculus/images/ellipse_standard_equation_1.jpg
06:49 AM rdtsc-w: lots of materials can lase; research "optically-pumped xxxx" Neodymium-Yttrium-Garnet (YAG) for instance
06:50 AM rdtsc-w: Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet I mean
06:53 AM rdtsc-w: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_laser_types Whenever the missus can't sleep, I'll start rattling off laser details and poof! she's asleep heheh
11:53 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
12:28 PM xxcoder: rdtsc-w: makes sense
12:29 PM xxcoder: that giant slab thing insane
12:30 PM xxcoder: it looks like hard candy being processed lol
01:26 PM Unterhaus__ is now known as unterhausen
01:45 PM bjorkint0sh: i'm running out of usb ports to plug random crap into.
01:45 PM bjorkint0sh: any recommendations for a beefy benchtop type usb port extender?
01:46 PM bjorkint0sh: I want to get one of these neat things: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbGohcv6uxo
01:46 PM bjorkint0sh: https://digilent.com/shop/analog-discovery-3/
01:53 PM bjorkint0sh: usb hub.
02:10 PM memleak: so the pi5 isn't ready for linuxcnc yet? what part needs work?
02:15 PM unterhausen: wow, it just thundered. I wonder where my dog is going to hide
02:16 PM memleak: unter the hausen, in the basement? :P
02:17 PM unterhausen: she doesn't like it in the basement
02:21 PM unterhausen: der keller
02:23 PM roycroft: it's raining lightly here
02:23 PM roycroft: we're supposed to get 33mm today, but i don't think that much is coming
02:23 PM roycroft: and then starting tomorrow, we'll have off and on rain/snow for the next week
02:24 PM roycroft: it's been nice having a week's respite from rain, although it's gotten below freezing every night because of that
02:29 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Yo
02:29 PM xxcoder: similiar predictions here
02:29 PM xxcoder: hey jt
02:30 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Nice weekend here
04:09 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as unterhausen
04:23 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> chilly and drizzly here..... rain for the next weekish
05:37 PM roycroft: grr
05:37 PM * JT-Shop calls it a night
05:37 PM roycroft: crazy inflation begins again tomorrow, and this time it's completely intentional
05:38 PM * roycroft wishes he could buy a 4 year supply of avocados today, but they won't keep for more than a few days so that's right out
05:39 PM xxcoder: hurry up and invent stasis fields
05:40 PM xxcoder: im currently growing a avocodo tree, but might need 6-10 years if you want fruit from it.
05:42 PM roycroft: i don't know if i can wait that long
05:42 PM roycroft: but most avocado plants grown from seed never fruit
05:42 PM xxcoder: fom what I understand thats not true
05:42 PM roycroft: yours will be a nice house plant, but don't expect it to produce
05:42 PM roycroft: especially as far north as you are
05:42 PM xxcoder: its variable, but most varations is tasty
05:43 PM roycroft: hmm
05:43 PM xxcoder: yeah I dont expect to ever plant it outside
05:43 PM xxcoder: unless I haven perment greenhoue or something
05:43 PM roycroft: i haven't looked into it in a long time, but when i did what i read wad discouraging
05:43 PM roycroft: as far as fruiting goes
05:43 PM roycroft: oh well
05:44 PM xxcoder: my sis in laws sister have 5 avocodo trees and theyre all fine and growing though, and they live bit north of me
05:44 PM xxcoder: all fruiting
05:44 PM xxcoder: all trees pretty small, though probably limited
05:45 PM roycroft: gasoline is going to get really expensive too, and that's something that takes millions of years to grow
05:45 PM roycroft: i certainly can't wait that long
05:45 PM xxcoder: I want a good ev evenually. telo is still being developed but it looks good
05:45 PM roycroft: by 2028 evs may be illegal
05:46 PM xxcoder: ehh dont think so, not with someone friends with president
05:47 PM roycroft: elon will be exiled to mars by then :)
05:48 PM xxcoder: lol
05:49 PM roycroft: of course he can't legally be exiled
05:49 PM roycroft: but he'll be appointed as the us ambassador to mars
05:49 PM roycroft: and charged with establishing an embassy there
05:50 PM xxcoder: very cushy job, as lo0ng as youre fine with not meeting other people
05:51 PM xxcoder: it'd be perfect for me, if I have decent internet access. probably wont
05:51 PM Roguish: roycroft, you're on a roll today...........
05:57 PM bjorkint0sh: roycroft is just going roguish is all.
05:57 PM Roguish: haha
05:59 PM roycroft: i'm just tired of people with pea-sized brains running things and ruining the lives of people who are honest and hard working and just want to get ahead a little bit
06:00 PM Roguish: read David Brooks today in the NY Times....
06:00 PM roycroft: paywall there
06:00 PM roycroft: but i can imagine what he says
06:00 PM roycroft: and he'll be on pbs tonight
06:00 PM roycroft: saying the same thing
06:00 PM roycroft: so i'll watch that later on
06:00 PM Roguish: it's about stupidity
06:01 PM roycroft: tonight is opera night
06:01 PM roycroft: so i'll be in town until late
06:01 PM roycroft: well the tarrifs are about the stupidest thing any president has ever done
06:01 PM roycroft: especially they way they're being done and the reasons for which they're being done
06:01 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> So far...
06:03 PM roycroft: let's see - slap a 25% tariff on goods coming in from mexico as a way to get mexico to secure the border
06:03 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> https://jauriarts.org/_heisenbridge/media/matrix.org/rGEVMlxakGymiVjCZjbeLElC/x2GOPQ8Cp4w/david%20brooks%20stupidity.pdf
06:03 PM roycroft: the tariff will push mexico into recession
06:03 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> there ya go
06:03 PM roycroft: causing even more mexicans to try to cross the border
06:04 PM roycroft: thanks
06:05 PM roycroft: that article starts out exactly as i expected it would
06:05 PM roycroft: and pretty much mirrors what i'm saying
06:12 PM roycroft: i'm not a fan of david brooks, and think he is in ya-ya land much of the time, but he's pretty much spot on with that op-ed
06:13 PM Roguish: i know he's on pbs on fridays., but i can't stand pbs anymore, so I watch his pbs on youtube....
06:13 PM Roguish: just his segment
06:13 PM roycroft: allegedly pbs is going away
06:14 PM roycroft: it's going to lose all its federal funding because pbs and npr are committing fraud
06:14 PM Roguish: FCC is looking into it's funding..
06:14 PM roycroft: and when the federal funding goes away they will collapse
06:14 PM roycroft: because they're on such a tight budget that the 2-3% of their funding that comes from the feds will break them
06:15 PM roycroft: the fcc and irs and the like will be "looking into" all enemies of the state
06:17 PM rdtsc: hmm... looking at lscpu, my Rpi4B (bookworm 6.6.44-rt39) has mitigations enabled for Spectre V1. Adding "mitigations=off" to /boot/broadcom/cmdline.txt didn't disable it, but dmesg shows it in there without error - what am I missing?
06:18 PM lcnc-relay: <thorhian@> NGL, the lack of politics was nice on the discord LCNC server when the bridge stopped working for a while.
06:18 PM roycroft: anyway, i'm off to town
06:19 PM roycroft: dinner with a friend, then we're going to rigoletto
06:19 PM roycroft: one of my favorite operas, and one that i've never seen performed live
06:20 PM roycroft: sorry, thorian@, i'm doing my best to minimise that influence, and i'll strive to do even better
06:20 PM rdtsc: enjoy Roycroft :)
06:21 PM roycroft: i shall :)
06:22 PM roycroft: la donna e mobile is one of the funnest arias ever
06:22 PM xxcoder: have fun
06:23 PM xxcoder: heyy something I always wanted
06:23 PM xxcoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIcZZX10pa4
06:23 PM roycroft: and hopefully tomorrow i'll be heading down with the pickup to work on the old house again
06:25 PM roycroft: that might be interesting, xxcoder
06:25 PM xxcoder: yeah. can host own server too, which it wont turn to ewaste as soon as company decides it
06:25 PM roycroft: i'm looking for small control panels for my home automation system that i can install in strategic spots in my house
06:25 PM Roguish: roycroft, goooooo, get outa here
06:25 PM Roguish: have fun
06:28 PM Roguish: ok, signing off...... ttfn
06:32 PM xxcoder: ordered one. dunno if will have regets lol
06:48 PM NetPipe: super lights
06:48 PM NetPipe: anyone use hps or mh in their shops ?
06:49 PM NetPipe: lathe work is probably best done under some kinda white light ?
06:51 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> I use 100w (actual power, not equivalent) 8' LED T8 tubes. Works great, just can't look at the ceiling.
06:56 PM Tom_L: i put led strips in mine
06:56 PM Tom_L: better than the old flourescent
06:58 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> The shop already had all of the 8' fluorescent fixtures so it was easier to just remove the ballasts and put in the led tubes.
07:00 PM Tom_L: right
07:01 PM Tom_L: mine are only the 4' ones
07:01 PM Tom_L: been gradually replacing as the fluorescents go
07:04 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> I will probably have to replace the fixtures when these ones die as the 8' led tube replacements are hard to get and expensive. I got a great deal on a 24 pack direct from china. I use 12 in my shop and am down to 6 spares after 5 years.
07:05 PM Tom_L: i ran thru the box of bulbs i had so now it's leds
07:05 PM Tom_L: bulbs/tubes
07:53 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> we have a ton of led lights in the shop ( rewired the fluorescent fixtures). Same. Can't look up
08:25 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> @JT is there a programmatic method for generating the "pins" files for mesact?
08:25 PM lcnc-relay: ie: https://github.com/ccatlett1984/mesact/blob/7c80/info/mesa/7c80/7c80-pins.txt (I cloned the 7i96 file, and replaced the board name)
08:25 PM lcnc-relay: the 7c80 uses inmux, so i'm not sure how much the input/output pins change
08:26 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> I had boards.py edited, accidently nuked it with a push, have to redo that part
08:27 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> curious as to how to handle the spi driver load (maybe just have 2 entries for the card, 1 for pi5, 1 for older Pi's)
08:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> wow. I don't know what image I used for the rpi5 initally - but I was having problems with the mesa ethernet card. I just wrote the latest (just created) one on linuxcnc website. Way better. It also uses /etc/network/interfaces - which is not what my original image had.
08:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Latency was good on the old image - but I would constantly get read errors..
08:32 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> this image - I was playing youtube videos with no read issues.
09:02 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> skunkworks8841@ i'm working through adding the 7c80 to mesact
09:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Neat! I have not tried mesact yet
09:03 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> looks like much less a pita than pncconf
09:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I am sure. (I usually take an existing config and change/add what I want..) (yes - I am a showoff)
09:05 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> I'd like to make the barrier to entry for future folks using the 7c80/7c81 boards as low as possible
09:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> That is awesome!
09:09 PM rdtsc: <ccatlett1984@> curious as to how to handle the spi driver load (maybe just have 2 entries for the card, 1 for pi5, 1 for older Pi's) - tested the hm2_spix driver on Rpi4B - works
09:10 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> oh sweet, that makes things easier, nust need to require 2.10 (unless it was backported to 2.9.4)
09:10 PM rdtsc: works on 2.9.4 :)
09:10 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> awesome
09:22 PM memleak: <lcnc-relay> <tyrantelf@> I saw the note on LPC not being ready on the pi5 yet or I'd have grabbed a 5 ... <lcnc-relay> <big_kevin420@> yeah its not pi5 ready, and pi4 does have better suppoert
09:22 PM memleak: so what's exactly wrong with the pi5 on linuxcnc?
09:23 PM memleak: LPC is low pin count right?
09:24 PM memleak: skunkworks what issue did you have with the pi5 with mesa ethernet card?
09:25 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> @memleak the main thing with the pi5 was the different SPI driver that was required, for the c80/c81
09:27 PM memleak: what is c80/c81?
09:27 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> 7c80/7c81 mesa boards, a pi directly communicates to them via their gpio pins
09:28 PM memleak: ohh, ok!
09:28 PM memleak: that's pretty cool!
09:28 PM memleak: ethernet is standardized i'd imagine there shouldn't be any issues with ethernet
09:29 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> i'm not sure on what issues would have come from the ethernet cards
09:29 PM memleak: yeah, that's what's baffling me unless the pi5 did weird things in firmware or something with their ethernet card
09:43 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> whats up memleak
09:43 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> well, idk about the mesa driver, but the remora driver is fine mostly, but does something wierd on exit
09:45 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> lpc boards were discontiuned during the chip shortage so supported shifted to STM32, but seems like a lot of people still use them, so it needs updating
09:45 PM memleak: ah ok
09:46 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> actually the LPC thing is unrelated to the rpi5,
09:46 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> do the lpc boards also talk over spi?
09:46 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> i was gonna say.
09:46 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> if you do remora
09:46 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> the lpc not working on rpi5 is unrelated to rpi5, but to a big update thjat was at the same time as the rpi5 update
09:47 PM memleak: big update to linuxcnc or something else?
09:47 PM memleak: just trying to figure out what does and doesn't work on pi5 and why
09:57 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> on the remora firmware
10:38 PM memleak: ah ok
