01:30 AM lcnc-relay: <phlogtrog@> does anyone have a resource with more info on using filters to generate g code?
01:47 AM Deejay: moin
01:55 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> moin
03:09 AM lcnc-relay: <lolthekidison@> https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/970073761770512384/1333360995447607367/image.png?ex=67989cb1&is=67974b31&hm=ea2d9b0af830d0346b9f300e883a243beea4c7b96144d10c61983bb341588275&
03:12 AM lcnc-relay: <lolthekidison@> I input these values in the Home location, table travel and home switch location for y axis normal and inverted along with - home search velocity, and still didnt get anything that worked with my original image.
04:21 AM Tom_L: morning
05:02 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:03 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:53 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> JT: you getting a zr1?
06:16 AM JT-Cave: no place to park it lol
06:17 AM JT-Cave: I can't even imagine the ADM on a ZR1
06:23 AM JT-Cave: I wonder what the gas guzzler tax is on that lol
08:43 AM Tom_L: $6400.00
08:43 AM Tom_L: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c8-zr1-and-zora-discussion/4897631-2025-zr1-gas-guzzler-tax-6-400-a.html
08:43 AM Tom_L: + the gas
09:39 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> I love turning prehardened 4140, so easy to make a beautiful finish! Tough to make the chip break on my little lathe though. Got a 22 foot long danger noodle last night on the floor 😄
10:06 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> I love 4140 and 4340 as well. Now that I have a bigger lathe it cuts so nicely. Just have to feed hard enough to break the chips as you say. I find a 2.5mm DOC, 0.25mm/rev feed, and 150m/min works great.
10:08 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> I was in that neighborhood, I should maybe check my insert geometry
10:09 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> oh right, I was roughing with a square set at 45 degrees, that'll throw things off
10:09 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> The 0.25mm/rev is the minimum. Less than that and the chip won't tend to break.
10:10 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> Yes, you will get chip thinning and would need to increase the feed to compensate.
10:18 AM lcnc-relay: <zmrdko@> Hello, I have Question: i dont see any debug messages in Terminal, when i launch linuxcnc with probe_basic and [EMC]DEBUG = 5 in INI file
10:57 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Lol..
10:59 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> zmrdko@ I call my kids poop sprays as a term of endearment..
11:01 AM Rab: voiditswarranty, 22ft chip is intense. Don't let it wrap around your ankles, I was just reading horror stories on PM about that.
11:02 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> indeed, I fed it into a huge garbage can and it seemed to keep going into it
11:04 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> I wonder how I can convince it to turn into a pot scrubber 😄
11:07 AM Rab: heh
11:09 AM Rab: Sometimes I have saved piles of interesting chips, thinking, "this is a cool crafting material". Then the years go by, I realize it's hoarding behavior, and I recycle them.
11:12 AM Rab: I totally should have helped the kids make Halloween spiders out of black ABS corkscrews. Never throw anything away!
11:21 AM memleak: Tom_L, andypugh made 2.9.4 rtai debs
11:30 AM rdtsc-w: zmrdko, does linuxcnc need to be built as debug to see those messages? (unsure)
11:34 AM Tom_L: rdtsc-w, no
11:34 AM Tom_L: memleak, thanks
11:34 AM memleak: building linuxcnc with debug info has to do with symbols in object files mostly
11:36 AM Tom_L: too bad RTAI installs can't be upgrades like preempt-rt instead of fresh installs each time
11:37 AM Tom_L: get things set up just the way you want then start all over again
11:37 AM memleak: RTAI can be updated without fresh installs, it's all through apt
11:38 AM memleak: rtai kernel image goes to /boot, rtai-modules go to /usr/realtime* and then the linuxcnc rtai package
11:38 AM memleak: i used to update rtai all the time on debian
11:39 AM Tom_L: i did in the past but with the recent builds didn't realize that was possible
11:39 AM memleak: yep!
11:39 AM memleak: nothing is done outside of apt
11:39 AM memleak: and even if it weren't, i manage rtai installs outside of the package manager in gentoo by just knowing where the files go
11:41 AM memleak: /boot, /lib/modules and /usr/realtime
11:42 AM memleak: rm -rf /boot/*RTAI* && rm -rf /lib/modules/*RTAI* && rm -rf /usr/realtime ; do it all the time
11:57 AM rdtsc-w: was just unsure if lcnc has anything in place such as "don't display debug messages unless built as debug."
12:00 PM rdtsc-w: or only enabled for master, etc. not at my machine so can't test atm
12:05 PM memleak: so rdtsc-w i don't think i asked you, what do you use linuxcnc for? i'm always curious what people are up to with the project :)
12:06 PM rdtsc-w: well, building a 1.5x1x0.3m mill... after that, hopefully a "tabletop" wire-EDM :) you?
12:07 PM memleak: I just help my dad with software related stuff, he builds custom robots and multi-axis CNC machines
12:07 PM memleak: more complicated, the better is his M.O. lol
12:07 PM memleak: tends to not ever work on anything simple, always inventing new things
12:08 PM rdtsc-w: lcnc is a great way to get really complicated, really quickly lol
12:09 PM memleak: yeah what looks like the hardest thing on the software side with linuxcnc are the ini files and hal configs
12:09 PM memleak: like knowing G code is one thing but all the pin stuff is way over my head
12:10 PM rdtsc-w: things are deciptively simple at first, just edit a few files... but they say "the devil is in the details." :)
12:11 PM memleak: I once talked to a guy about EDM and he said it's sometimes used for something to do with jewelry or diamonds. any idea?
12:12 PM memleak: something about getting something out of something without destroying something XD
12:13 PM rdtsc-w: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBueWfzb7P0
12:14 PM memleak: i think he was talking about how you'd get a diamond out of a rock and EDM is the way to do it
12:14 PM memleak: idr
12:15 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> Unless it is a conductive rock that isn't going to work too well. Have to be careful with diamonds too because you can vaporize them in an electrical arc.
12:16 PM memleak: heh yeah not sure
12:17 PM rdtsc-w: NileRed burned diamonds in a quartz tube + oxygen = nothing left, all completely gone lol
12:18 PM memleak: rofl
12:18 PM rdtsc-w: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0wvDwSnzcw
12:20 PM Rab: I could see it being useful for jewelry settings, e.g. resizing or modification of existing pieces. High precision needed, very fine detail, etc.
12:27 PM memleak: ah ok!
04:10 PM xxcoder: wow amazing. google just released pebble watch source code, minus some properity stuff
04:10 PM xxcoder: https://opensource.googleblog.com/2025/01/see-code-that-powered-pebble-smartwatches.html
04:32 PM Unterhausen is now known as unterhausen
04:46 PM CloudEvil: hmm
05:38 PM JT-Shop: ho
05:41 PM xxcoder: man a LOT of chat about pebble news on discord for rebble pebble
05:41 PM xxcoder: https://repebble.com/ the new site
05:42 PM * JT-Shop hasn't worn a watch in a few decades
05:43 PM xxcoder: didnt wear a watch for quite a while till 2017 when I got pebble classic
05:43 PM JT-Shop: I still have a collection of my Dad's timex watches all the same
05:44 PM JT-Shop: I have a very old gold pocket watch somewhere
05:44 PM xxcoder: nice. we still have few of dads watches
05:44 PM xxcoder: old watches is also cool. I still have my graduation gift watch, needs new battery though
05:47 PM JT-Shop: so I wonder if the two hens will sleep in the next box or the coop tonight
05:48 PM JT-Shop: blondie is in the nest box at the moment and dusk is getting close
05:57 PM JT-Shop: nest box even
06:01 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> for hal setup, what card is the closest to the 7c80?
06:25 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> they are all kind of the same
06:25 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> its hal
06:25 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> well - I had the rpi5 conneced to a 7i97 for the last few days - no realtime errors. (wasn't expecting any)
06:26 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/tree/master/configs/by_interface/mesa/hm2-stepper
06:28 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> lolthekidison@: i think you are getting confused with everything here
06:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> xxcoder: I have a couple accutron watches that cradek fixed...
06:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I love them.
06:29 PM xxcoder: looks pretty cool
06:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have a spaceview that cradek made out of a couple ebay finds..
06:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I was looking through dads stuff and he had an accutron that was from probably his dads dad.
06:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> 60's vintage
06:31 PM Tom_L: i have my grandfather's pocket watch
06:31 PM Tom_L: last i checked it keeps good time
06:32 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have been wearing that one as the spaceview needs to go back to cradek.. It just stops running randomly
06:33 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (not something cradek did - I am just pretty hard on watches)
06:34 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://electronicsam.com/images/house/Spaceveiwsmall.png
06:35 PM xxcoder: yeah I couldnt be careful with watches lol. I love pebble steel, its quite strong
06:38 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> The comment is that - the accutron watches were probably the first transister that people had... (they have 1 transistor that runs the tuning fork)
06:38 PM xxcoder: interesting
06:40 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> lolthekidison@: no no no damn 100kmh winds
06:41 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> im gonna loose power
06:41 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> i wish i had phone data,
06:41 PM xxcoder: loose? just tighten up that power ;)
06:42 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> i charged by battery paxck the othetr day
06:42 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> but if theres no internet, i might aswell just go to sleep
06:43 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> i could probably run my baby mill on thw booster pack
06:43 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> it runs on less than 4 amps @24v
06:45 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> maybe i should just get phone data
06:47 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> lolthekidison@: didnt mean to reply with the weather, but you will get more value for your time by not brute forcing every combination
06:47 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> starlink?
06:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> oh - sorry - losing power
06:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> missed that part
06:48 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> well, if it was starlink i could hook it up to my car
06:49 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> i could use the generator, but i dont wanna hurt my arm
06:49 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> at least its not raining, or i would have to flush the sump manally
06:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I just did the front brales on moms equinox that I have been using since hitting the deer...
06:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I was going to have the local mechanic do it - but they could not get me in until wednesday..
06:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> so - $200 and 2 hours.. the hardest part was that the rotors did not want to come off. Heat and a mahl did it.
06:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the car wasn't run very often and that is hard on the brakes
06:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/QCF6DMo9JjcNVWo59
06:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> they were pulsing pretty bad - then started metal on metal sound...
06:52 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> ahh is that pad wiped on the top?
06:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yep
06:52 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> seized calipers?
06:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it is a 2017 with 40k
06:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> no - and the sliders were good too
06:52 PM Tom_L: older equinox?
06:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> 2017
06:53 PM Tom_L: old body style.. i have an 18
06:53 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I need to get in shape.. That 2 hours of work wrecked me.
06:53 PM Tom_L: hah
06:53 PM Tom_L: you get alot more moisture there i see
06:54 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yah..
06:54 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> midwest
06:54 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> wisconsin
06:55 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it took 2 tries to get the metal shield to not rub... (I managed to hit it with the mahl)
06:55 PM Tom_L: well, i consider ks midwest too...
06:55 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> for the pi5,is this the line in the hal file that i need to change hm2_rpspi to hm2spix?
06:55 PM lcnc-relay: "loadrt hm2_rpspi config=" num_encoders=1 num_pwmgens=1 num_stepgens=5 sserial_port_0=0xxxxx" "
06:56 PM Tom_L: ccatlett yes
06:56 PM Tom_L: i think
06:56 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> welp, i dont think it can break anything, just should fail to connect to the board if it's wrong
06:56 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Tom_L: how many miles
06:57 PM Tom_L: that's for the pi5 driver so yes
06:57 PM Tom_L: 127k
06:57 PM Tom_L: my daily driver
06:57 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> currently mine too 😉
06:57 PM Tom_L: but i got it early '17
06:57 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> my 2003 has 160k miles on it
06:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the toyota corolla - 250k.. I still have it. (needs tires and probably a clutch)
06:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> 2006 I think
06:59 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I also have a ford flex - but that ex uses that when her subaru fails. which is often
06:59 PM Tom_L: summertime i'll be due for tires i think
06:59 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I should sell some things.
07:01 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> The insurence comany wants to give me 4kish if I want to keep the jetts - and 6kish if I want to get rid of it
07:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> jetta
07:02 PM Tom_L: settle on 5 and keep it
07:02 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> for homing, i have limit (NC) switches on the left side for X, and front for Y, limit (NO) at top for Z
07:02 PM lcnc-relay: net max-home-z <= hm2_7c80.0.inmux.00.input-23-not
07:02 PM lcnc-relay: net min-home-x <= hm2_7c80.0.inmux.00.input-20
07:02 PM lcnc-relay: net min-home-y <= hm2_7c80.0.inmux.00.input-17
07:02 PM lcnc-relay: does that look correct?
07:03 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> maybe, but it could depend
07:03 PM Tom_L: i don't have a 7c80 but yeah kinda
07:03 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> 1 check in halshow first,
07:03 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> 2 move away from home, and hit the home switch before it gets there and see what happens
07:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> ^good advice
07:04 PM Tom_L: very
07:04 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> I mean, i could just trigger them with a wrench
07:04 PM Tom_L: unless you like fixing things
07:04 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> sounds like a plan
07:04 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> yes, do that in halshow, then do it to see if it works
07:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have a machine that has 6 tons of cutting force.. There was a lot of that
07:05 PM Tom_L: you can watch them change in hal show without moving the axis
07:05 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> I come from the klipper world, always get limit switches working before enabling motors 😄
07:05 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> the yesterday doing a proper lathe, my linits showed up in halshow fine, but i had them connected to the wrong joints so it crashed a few times,
07:05 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> then i said fine ill do it proper
07:05 PM Tom_L: well you do gotta pay attention to what signal goes where :)
07:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://youtu.be/0gBN1qMAPPc?si=wJNqwB8-GrkcdbVy
07:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/cuXQmXvCh5KoRvaSA
07:28 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> how do you inset images in the chat? it looks like some people klnow how to upload it on discord
07:31 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> i dont want to use my own domains, just to get whois's like i just did to electricsam
07:35 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> lolthekidison@: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/cakeslob/upload_things/refs/heads/main/1610.png
07:38 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> make that true to match your picture
07:38 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> if you make your home the same as your min, you will exceed soft limits
07:38 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> probably
07:40 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> but its all about perspective, your machine doesnt match other machines in the default pic because in the x axis you are moving the spindle and the y axis you are moving the work piece
08:01 PM rdtsc: ccatlett1984 if you haven't already, reference: https://github.com/mj1911/my-linuxcnc/blob/main/configs/flex4/flex4.ini homing temporarily disabled (only running Z motor on bench currently)
08:02 PM rdtsc: since then, found out the 2.9.4 hm2_spix driver also works, and at 25MHz
08:36 PM roycroft: i was just watching a youtube video, and the guy was stripping some electrical wires with a utility knife
08:36 PM roycroft: i saw him start to do it and said to myself "he's gonna cut his thumb with that"
08:36 PM roycroft: then it slipped and he cut his thumb
08:37 PM roycroft: i was already starting to look away when it happened
08:37 PM xxcoder: geez
08:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Maybe you can just predict the future..
08:38 PM xxcoder: so, whats tomorrow lottery #
08:40 PM rdtsc: super lotto, that is :)
08:41 PM rdtsc: mega ga-zillions
08:45 PM rdtsc: so that taking the lump sum is over $1100 after taxes
08:52 PM rdtsc_ is now known as rdtsc
09:12 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> "max resolver gens" what are resolver gens in that context?
09:22 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> modifying pncconf to add the 7c80
09:44 PM roycroft: watching southerners freak out when they get a dusting of snow is pretty funny
11:54 PM lcnc-relay: <lolthekidison@> big_kevin420@: Haha all good, It didn't take to long to test them all. I was able to watch and listen to some more videos today and I believe I just didn't understand how to change the motor direction. will test
