03:17 AM Centurion_Dan1 is now known as Centurion_Dan

04:24 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> hello
08:05 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> morning
09:08 AM rdtsc-w: mornin' gents
10:34 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:22 AM * rdtsc-w listens intently to the cacophony of crickets... hmm, if there are crickets, then it must be warm somewhere in the interwebs...
11:23 AM bjorkintosh: haha
12:02 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
12:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it was -2F here this morning
12:13 PM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> lucky you, it's -17F here right now
12:13 PM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> can only just barely get the garbage to the street in a tshirt without dying
12:16 PM xxcoder: 38f here outside, downright warm compared to you guys lol
12:22 PM bjorkintosh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbKOOb8T2fY
12:22 PM bjorkintosh: almost $3,000.00
12:22 PM bjorkintosh: I don't know why I'm surprised.
12:48 PM roycroft: that video doesn't load for me, but from what i see of the preview, the grizzly g0602 is similar enough for $1k less that it might be a consideration
12:48 PM roycroft: a lot of folks have done cnc conversions to the g0602
01:01 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:32 PM bjorkintosh: g0602?
01:32 PM bjorkintosh: so after tooling, it comes up to the same price then.
01:54 PM roycroft: the main differences between the two, other than fit and finish, is that the pm comes with the qctp and the grizzly does not, the grizzly comes with a 6-1/2" 4 jaw chuck while the PM is 5", and the pm has power cross feed while the grizzly does not
01:54 PM roycroft: that last feature is almost worth the extra money to me
01:55 PM roycroft: but if it's for a cnc conversion then that does not matter at all
01:56 PM roycroft: the other difference that may be important is that the pm is currently being made out of unobtanium, while the grizzly is in stock and ready to ship
01:56 PM roycroft: pm gear is often made of unobtanium
01:57 PM roycroft: i guess they're just too popular
01:59 PM roycroft: oh, the pm also has a quick change spindle mount, while the grizzly is threaded
01:59 PM roycroft: another feature that stand-alone is almost worth the upgrade cost
01:59 PM xxcoder: isnt 2 almost worth its make into worth it?
02:01 PM roycroft: neither has a back gear, so don't think about turning anything large on either one unless it's a fat stick of butter that you are turning
02:01 PM xxcoder: butteralloy
02:01 PM roycroft: the bigger 4 jaw is nice
02:01 PM roycroft: but it's easy to upgrade a chuck
02:01 PM roycroft: it's not so easy to add power cross feed or quick change spindle mount to a lathe
02:03 PM roycroft: which is also why the qctp is not a big deal to me - that's something that's easy to add
02:04 PM roycroft: besides, i kept my qctp when i got rid of my last lathe, so for me it would be a zero cost upgrade
03:20 PM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> oh man I REALLY wish I had a quick change spindle mount! So much that I'm considering making a new spindle.
03:21 PM xxcoder: you made current one on yours?
03:21 PM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> that's the plan yes. not the same machine, it's the busy bee b1777l, very similar to the G0604 from decades past
03:21 PM roycroft: i believe andypugh made one for a lathe of his
03:22 PM xxcoder: not surpised roy, andy is very skilled
03:25 PM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> * b2227L,
03:42 PM xxcoder: roycroft: did you see my comment about roland sraracha?
03:54 PM roycroft: i saw that you bought some
03:54 PM roycroft: i've not seen anything else though - did you try it?
03:54 PM xxcoder: ya it was bit thicker, sweeter. and spicer
03:54 PM xxcoder: not bad but maybe bit strong
03:54 PM xxcoder: strong taste that is
03:54 PM roycroft: but the sweetness should balance that somewhat
03:54 PM roycroft: and if it's a stronger taste then you can use less
03:54 PM roycroft: and save money
03:55 PM xxcoder: its a lot better than many others I tried. best so far aletrnate is trader joes sraracha
03:57 PM xxcoder: man I still remmber that really bad one, it was too liquidy, and it sprays sideways when I squeeze
03:58 PM xxcoder: it was one of very rare times I just threw it away rather than run it out
04:05 PM roycroft: genuine siracha sauce would often partially clog the squirt tip so it would spray sideways
04:05 PM roycroft: i've learned to always check that before giving it a squeeze
04:08 PM xxcoder: never had that issue with any sraracha sauces including "the cock" one orginal and new
04:11 PM roycroft: i think it happens when you don't close the squirt tip completely when you put it back in the fridge
04:11 PM roycroft: the gunk at the tip hardens
04:11 PM xxcoder: I dont ever put it in fridge'
04:11 PM roycroft: when i see that i just open the tip all the way, close it all the way, wipe the gunk off, then open it again and use it
04:12 PM roycroft: oh, i don't go through it very fast, so i figure refrigerating it is a good thing
04:12 PM xxcoder: well that crap one was doing it from brand new and never was "fixed" few times I used it lol
04:12 PM roycroft: so it probably was too thick to begin with
04:12 PM xxcoder: nah it was thin like I said earlier lol
04:13 PM roycroft: oh, sorry
04:13 PM xxcoder: no plm :)
04:13 PM roycroft: then it had a crappy squirt tip
04:13 PM xxcoder: yeah
04:13 PM xxcoder: trader joe actually has worse one, but I still have tip from orginal so I just reuse it
04:14 PM xxcoder: it wasnt sraracha style tip type butmore like regular sauce with lid flip cover
04:16 PM xxcoder: roland probably has thickest sraracha sauce
04:23 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> well, my machine is down for the winter, unless i get money coming in... network keeps freezing in the cold, and no money to re-do the wiring, that is necessary for machine safety... i have one 30 pound LP gas tank for heat, and no money to re-fill it. hope my new spindle doesn't rust...
04:25 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> Grease up the spindle
04:25 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> why bother at this point?
04:25 PM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> and toss a sheet over the machine, the majority of frost comes from moisture condening out of the air and falling from above
04:26 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> If you cover it in grease, it can't rust
04:28 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> it is an ATC spindle, it says no oil or grease, on the mating surfaces
04:29 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> If you have some LPS or anti corrosion spray that will help as well. You just need to clean it off before you use it again.
04:32 PM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> even removing some air volume inside the spindle can help. Stuff a plastic bag up there.
04:32 PM roycroft: it's too bad you can't bottle your frustration and turn that into energy, travis_farmer
04:32 PM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> +assuming it's not already humid that is
04:33 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> true
04:33 PM xxcoder: well I guess grease stuff up except for mating surfaces, drape it over. I would probably add diseccant package in it to empty it out of water in air inside it
04:36 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> i don't think i can get to the air passages inside... with the air filter it should be dry, i think inside. i could warm it up, charge the compressor, and manually operate the air-valves to blow out the air passages, i suppose, before packaging it for winter.
04:37 PM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> sounds like a good plan! blow it out, toss a dessicant bag in there, and wrap it up?
04:37 PM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> * up1
04:39 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> sounds like a plan for tomorrow, gotta go to the store now.
04:42 PM roycroft: if it were me and i were concerned about it i'd bring the spindle into the house or some other place with climate control for the winter
04:45 PM roycroft: my gage blocks have never lived in the shop
05:13 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
05:13 PM Unterhausen: I would bring it in. I know that's a lot of work, but it's also a lot of money

05:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> we do a good job keeping the shop equipment above dew point.
05:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (but we also heat with wood)
05:29 PM roycroft: when i finish getting the new shop insulated i plan on installing a mini-split unit that can be remotely controlled
05:29 PM roycroft: and i'll keep it above the dew point at all times then
05:30 PM roycroft: right now i have an oil-filled radiator that i keep on 24/7 in the rainy season
05:30 PM roycroft: that usually keeps the shop above the dew point, and i have a big overhead electric forced air heater that i use when i'm working out there when it's cold
05:30 PM roycroft: it will be nice for all of that stuff to go away eventually
05:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> mrcool can be remotely controlled.. It is nice. been using it for about 8 months?
05:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (I am sure they mostly can)
05:59 PM roycroft: i'm using home assistant now
05:59 PM roycroft: whatever mini-split unit i get i'd like to monitor and control with that
06:00 PM roycroft: i've seeen the mrcool stuff, and it's on my list to investigate further
06:00 PM roycroft: i'm a good half year or so away from doing this, at least, so i'm just doing some really preliminary research right now - mainly to get budget numbers
06:00 PM roycroft: it looks like i should be able to do it for <$1k
06:06 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> currently heating the attic..
06:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/VZGHeizgwKTXaCqG9
06:07 PM xxcoder: I want to put in the split, but not sure if I could
06:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I spent a bit more as I needed 2 inside units.. (the outside unit can run 3)
06:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it was doable - but wasn't fun
06:09 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/qBvbMh8D5dJu8KdM9
06:10 PM xxcoder: big one allright. theres mini split I want to have
06:16 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I forget what it needed - 60 amp breaker?
06:16 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it was way more than I thought it would need
06:16 PM xxcoder: probably high startup power need
06:16 PM Roguish: roycroft, you use Home Assistant ???? nice. I use https://homeseer.com/
06:19 PM Roguish: roycroft, what type devices do you use? I have Z-wave and zigbee
06:20 PM Roguish: and a few old X-10
06:23 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> I have a mini split in the shop and it is great. Set it to 20C and forget about it. Automatically switches between heating and cooling and costs less to run than the gas furnace.
06:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> they are pretty cool - and only getting better
06:45 PM xxcoder: yeah from what I see, the size I need, would need 800 watts or so
06:45 PM xxcoder: not bad
06:47 PM roycroft: well, one of the old hub studs sheared off right at the nut, and i'm having a lot of trouble extracting the rest of it from the nut
06:47 PM roycroft: i may need to get new nuts for the hub
06:47 PM * roycroft is frustrated enough to need to walk away from the project for now, and will regroup later on this evening to decide what to do
06:48 PM roycroft: if i had something resembling a metals shop, with a proper mechanic's vise and some heating tools like an oxy-acetylene torch, this would probably go pretty easily
06:48 PM roycroft: but the torch is still at the old shop, and the vise is laying on the ground
06:49 PM roycroft: it's channel locks and vise grips for now
07:11 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> can you do math functions inside a hal file?
07:12 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> or an ini? the ini file i dont think so, its only variables
07:17 PM rdtsc: kevin, if using FlexGUI, I recently wanted to display X and Y with tool radius; Flex allows one to define a python file to use at run-time; tapped into a 0.1s timer to call my function, then display the values on the UI
07:18 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> big_kevin420@: Using a component, yes. hal files only have a list of connections and no real logic or math functions.
07:26 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> @rdtsc no i use axis, but this is a setup thing im trying to do
07:26 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> zincboy_ca_on@ ok, thats what im seeing, looks like options are a comp, a haltcl, and a python maybe
07:38 PM memleak: had issues earlier today trying to copy 2GB to a flash drive, took very long to sync
07:39 PM memleak: will work on it more tomorrow
08:31 PM rdtsc: memleak, maybe try dd and set optimal blocksize (likely through trial and error on a smaller file) - seen that greatly speed up flash drives
08:31 PM rene-dev2 is now known as rene-dev
09:02 PM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> big_kevin420@: if you can do and, or, and mul does that make hal turing complete?
