02:06 AM Deejay: moin
03:29 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> moin
04:11 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:43 AM Tom_L: morning
05:12 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> Morning
06:30 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:58 AM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
10:49 AM roycroft: we are having a break from the rain again this morning, but it is supposed to be raining hard again by the time i can head to town
10:49 AM roycroft: the highway was closed overnight at the approach to the pass due to a big wreck - it just reopened
10:49 AM roycroft: somebody probably ignored the chain sign
11:05 AM JT-Shop: chain sign as in tire chains?
11:21 AM roycroft: yes
11:22 AM bjorkintosh: they were probably from out of town.
11:22 AM roycroft: when the chain sign is up drivers are required to carry chains
11:22 AM roycroft: and when conditions are really bad there are signs by the chain-up area requiring folks to install them
11:23 AM roycroft: many people ignore that
11:23 AM roycroft: there's a steep fine for not driving with chains when required, but i think that when someone causes a wreck by ignoring the chain sign they should be liable for all the first responder and cleanup expenses
11:24 AM Unterhaus__ is now known as Unterhausen
11:24 AM roycroft: and their insurance won't cover that
11:24 AM JT-Cave: wow
11:25 AM Unterhausen: a local company is out marking for residential fiber internet
11:25 AM roycroft: it's above freezing on the pass right now, and the road is clear
11:25 AM roycroft: but it got a lot of snow overnight
11:27 AM bjorkintosh: that's draconian. you know how stingy insurance is in these united states.
11:32 AM roycroft: i should be more clear
11:32 AM roycroft: insurance should be prohibited from covering that
11:32 AM roycroft: ignoring the chain sign is a big deal
11:32 AM roycroft: and it puts life and property in danger
11:32 AM roycroft: people who ignore it should be punished
11:33 AM roycroft: having their insurance cover the cost of their reckless behavior is not punishment
11:33 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> those signs are for little people, the common man
11:33 AM rdtsc-w: reckless, or ignorant behavior? they might be out-of-towners
11:34 AM roycroft: i otherwise agree that insurance companies are not the most ethical of operations
11:34 AM roycroft: the signs say "chains required"
11:34 AM roycroft: they do not say "chains recommended"
11:34 AM roycroft: wanton ignorance is no differnt to recklessness, in my view
11:35 AM roycroft: when i used to travel to other countries i would spend some time researching local customs and laws, so i would know what to expect and what is expected of me
11:35 AM rdtsc-w: *foreign* out-of-towners, whom can't read English? kidding :)
11:35 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> what a different world it would be if the rules of the road were actually for public safety and the convenience for everyone
11:35 AM roycroft: people from non-mountainous areas who travel in the mountains should do the same thing
11:36 AM roycroft: most of them are, capthindsight_
11:36 AM roycroft: the problem is not with the rules of the road
11:36 AM roycroft: the problem is with law enforcement who push the limits of the law as a way to monetize their operation
11:36 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> we would have a multi-tiered licensing system based on skill and wisdom vs the lowest common denominator
11:36 AM roycroft: and to give them an excuse to abridge people's civil rights
11:37 AM rdtsc-w: it's gonna boil down to AI cameras spotting vehicles without chains and diverting/stopping them
11:37 AM roycroft: well, awarding points for bad behavior, and basing insurance rates on points kind of does that
11:37 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> our current law enforcement system is working as designed
11:38 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> stop being poor
11:38 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> why did you choose to be poor?
11:38 AM roycroft: or having an excess of melanin
11:39 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> that too
11:39 AM roycroft: or a last name ending in a vowel
11:39 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> well let me know when we decide to actually fix this
11:40 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> been waiting a few decades already and running out of them
11:40 AM rdtsc-w: our AI overlord to the rescue ;)
11:41 AM roycroft: the problem has existed for millennia
11:41 AM roycroft: it's not going to be solved overnight
11:42 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> the French solved the problem for a while, then got too lax again
11:43 AM roycroft: when they ran out of cake?
11:44 AM roycroft: this 1980s cheaply built house has no character
11:44 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> we have another bakery problem
11:44 AM roycroft: i've wanted to remodel it as a kind of modern bungalow since i bought it
11:45 AM roycroft: i was just designing window casings in a traditional craftsman style
11:45 AM roycroft: and adding up the cost of the moldings - it's going to be over $100 per window, and that's if i make much of the molding myself
11:46 AM roycroft: i think it will really look good though
11:46 AM roycroft: transformational, when it's all done
11:46 AM rdtsc-w: embrace the JT philosophy: it will be done by Tuesday. :)
11:46 AM * roycroft isn't really set up for millwork
11:47 AM roycroft: the small shop is not arranged, and cannot be arranged, to handle long, skinny boards efficiently
11:47 AM roycroft: but it will be worth the effort, i think
11:48 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> have you tried installing one of those walls that open?
11:48 AM roycroft: i should get that little cnc router that i got from xxcoder running soon - i can carve rosettes with it
11:48 AM roycroft: no
11:49 AM roycroft: i had a small shop once, when i lived in bellingham, and was just getting started with my cabinet business
11:50 AM roycroft: i cut some holes in the exterior walls in strategic places and put some hinged covers over them
11:50 AM roycroft: i could open them to create room for materials when feeding my jointer, thicknesser, and table saw
11:50 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> my current shop is ~1m^2, way down from ~300^2 m
11:50 AM roycroft: i even made some roller supports that i could affix quickly to the outside of the building
11:51 AM xxcoder: good morning
11:51 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> and I'm not even in japan
11:51 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> xxcoder: mornin
11:52 AM rdtsc-w: Afternoon xxcoder :)
11:52 AM xxcoder: internet protocol, always morning when arrive, and night on leave ;)
11:52 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> how to say you're way east without saying you're way east
11:56 AM rdtsc-w: not seaboard though; mid-west. Which is a weird term, because geographically I'm 2/3rds eastern, not 1/3rd western (middle-west)
11:58 AM xxcoder: blame history for that
11:58 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> Chicago is on the eastern border of central time
11:59 AM roycroft: well, gary indiana is
11:59 AM roycroft: that little sliver of indiana that is misplaced in time
12:00 PM rdtsc-w: then there's Newfoundland, which is an oddball on a 30-minute time zone
12:00 PM roycroft: there are several of those off-hour timezones
12:01 PM roycroft: they actually make sense
12:01 PM roycroft: but i wonder how much energy the cbc has wasted over the last 100 years saying "it's 8 o'clock, 8 thirty in newfoundland"
12:02 PM rdtsc-w: 1.21 jiggawatts!
12:03 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> India is the real problem with time zones
12:04 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> China just has one
12:04 PM roycroft: yes, because beijing is the only part of china that matters
12:05 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> we could have it here
12:05 PM roycroft: our early timezones were pretty weird
12:05 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> and many other real dumb things
12:05 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> just wait
12:05 PM roycroft: all of ohio, and half of pennsylvania were in the central time zone
12:05 PM roycroft: as was the entire deep south, including florida
12:06 PM roycroft: you had to go up to carolina to get into the eastern time zone
12:06 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> all the US on EST
12:07 PM roycroft: one thing that the incoming president wants to do that i agree with is end daylight saving time
12:07 PM roycroft: that may be the only thing i agree with him on
12:07 PM roycroft: whether he gets around to doing it (at least legally) i can't really predict
12:07 PM roycroft: i expect he'll try to do it as an executive order
12:07 PM roycroft: and that won't fly
12:08 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> who is going to pay for the end of DST?
12:08 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> Canada won't agree
12:08 PM roycroft: it will be profitable for the insurance companies
12:08 PM roycroft: actually, british columbia wants to be done with it
12:08 PM roycroft: i don't know about eastern canada
12:08 PM roycroft: and i don't care about the prairies :)
12:09 PM roycroft: i don't think it matters in the territories
12:09 PM roycroft: in the summer it's always light up there
12:09 PM roycroft: and in the winter it's always dark
12:09 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> as far as insurance goes why do they just make health insurance mandatory for everyone and then not pay out for anyone?
12:10 PM rdtsc-w: we're north enough here that without the dumb daylight savings time, school kids will be walking and standing in the dark to catch busses in the morning. seeing that anything is an excuse not to go (precipitation, temperature), that will likely be an excuse also "it's too dark / not safe"
12:11 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2n3M-0JDTCI
12:11 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> close the schools, dumb kids are easier to manipulate
12:12 PM roycroft: i'm just south of the 45th parallel, and it's still dark when the kids go to school in the winter
12:14 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> Python nailed much of it 50+ years ago
12:15 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvVPdyYeaQU
12:15 PM roycroft: i don't know why "simpsons did it" became a meme when "monty python did it" did not
12:18 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> Python didn't speak uhmerican
12:22 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> grrrrr i2c , total brainfuck 🙂
12:33 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> just mash some bits in there
12:33 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> what are you workin on todaty
12:36 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> rewrite the complete i2c stuff in rio
12:39 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> lol why> wasnt it working?>
12:41 PM rdtsc-w: https://www.circuitbasics.com/basics-of-the-i2c-communication-protocol/ i2c is very pedantic about its states; make sure (oscilloscope preferred) signals look as expected.
12:46 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> big_kevin420@discord: previously i had a plugin for each device, but this had the disadvantage that i needed 2 separate pins for each device as no bus system was possible.
12:46 PM lcnc-relay: in addition the i2c_master driver was bad, i have now rewritten it so that it can do what i need.
12:47 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> ahhh so 2 i2c needed 2 i2c channels
12:47 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> yes
12:47 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> yeah, good call, that would be waste of pins
01:09 PM xxcoder: amazing inheirance mach video today
03:09 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> https://www.multixmedia.org/i2c-config.png
03:18 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> was a lot of work, but this is only the config of one i2c-master, you can also create several, on different pins with different speeds
03:25 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> I ❤️ FPGA's
03:26 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@discord> i3c seems to be the "new thing" on the block
03:26 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@discord> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I3C_(bus)
03:30 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> but there are hardly any devices
03:30 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@discord> i3c is backwards compatible for i2c devices
03:31 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@discord> like a usb2 bus, down clocking for v1.1 devices
03:33 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> would that be called i tripple c
03:33 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> or I CCC
03:34 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> I three C
03:34 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@discord> lol
03:34 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> some people call it ICC
03:34 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> no, IIc
03:34 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@discord> new is "i" (cubed) "c"
03:34 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> thats what the kid at works calls it, IIC
03:34 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@discord> current is "i" (squared) "c"
03:35 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@discord> yay superscript
03:35 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> IIIC, if we go by the IIC pronounc, Im also not gonna call it I Squared C, that doesnt roll nice
03:35 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@discord> lol
03:36 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> Standard Data Rate (SDR) throughput between 10 and 12.5 Mbit/s: unfortunately I also have problems with the FPGA
03:36 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> at least with the cheap ones
03:39 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> I like saying I tripple C, its catchy
03:39 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> anything with tripple is catchy
03:40 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> I'm going to test that next: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/retired/14589
03:40 PM Tom_L: I c3po
03:40 PM xxcoder: those arent droids you are looking for. 👋
03:40 PM Tom_L: even comes with a mascot
03:42 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> meisterdippel@discord: to do like rs485 or something?
03:42 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> for long bus cables
03:46 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@discord> there's always single-pair ethernet for long runs
03:47 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@discord> can do 1km @ 10mbps
03:50 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> but cannot use i2c
03:50 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> i need i2c with 2.5 meter cable for my robot
03:51 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> * metre
03:51 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> * meter
03:56 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@discord> will do ModBUS 😉
04:00 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> I already have it in, but i don't want to have to build another controller for an i2c sensor that converts from i2c to modbus and back.
04:01 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@discord> makes sense
06:01 PM Unterhausen: anyone built a rt-preempt kernel for 6.12?
06:03 PM Tom_L: you can't get it from synaptic package manager?
06:04 PM Tom_L: the latest there iirc is 6.1.0
06:06 PM xxcoder: my LMDE 6 install have backports that allowed me to get 6.11 kernel
06:06 PM xxcoder: otherwise dunno
06:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> I have not built a kernel in quite a few year now...
06:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> The ex has a coffee shop. I have been roped into doing odd jobs.. (expensive ones like electrical) She started having a breaker that runs her coffee pot start tripping. I asked her if she has changed anything - like added load to the circuit.. She said no.. I said - well - the coffee pot won't likely start taking more current - that is not a normal failure mode. I said - we could replace the breaker - it might...
06:11 PM lcnc-relay: ... have worn out.
06:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> I get at breaker - did you know cutler and hammer merged with eaton? now you know. I could not find a breaker until I looked that up.
06:13 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@discord> heh, i mean a heater that has started failing, can start drawing more current
06:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> anyway - we get there and she walks in and said - could this do it? she has a fire place/ space heater plugged in. I flipped the breaker and it turned off. yes - I asked if you had changed anything
06:13 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@discord> lmao
06:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> I would assume the heater would normally open. Not some now lower its resistance
06:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> but - you never know
06:15 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@discord> i've seen it with pipe heating filament
06:16 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> shorting to ground?
06:17 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> 45 degrees here.. raining. snow is going away - quickly
06:17 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> well - we got one day of skiing...
06:19 PM Tom_L: most of those heaters are ~1500w aren't they?
06:19 PM Tom_L: not much headroom left on the breaker
06:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> never looked at it - once we figure out she had a space heater on the same circuit - probably the problem
06:27 PM xxcoder: mine is 400w
06:27 PM xxcoder: I use two of em
06:27 PM xxcoder: those heaters is really tiny
06:31 PM Tom_L: i don't think you'll find a normal house circuit appliance that exceeds 1500w.. hair dryers, space heaters, toaster ovens etc
06:31 PM xxcoder: titanium damascus https://youtu.be/RkHVe4YdcFs pretty cool
06:32 PM Tom_L: xxcoder, i watched one yesterday they made a knife using box cutter blades in a circle to make the slug from
06:32 PM Tom_L: you should have seen how it turned out
06:33 PM xxcoder: is it that same channel?
06:33 PM Tom_L: no clue
06:33 PM xxcoder: ok
06:40 PM xxcoder: wow its fairly new channel
06:42 PM Tom_L: doubt i can find it now
07:39 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> Unterhausen: Sid has up to 6.12.6-rt
07:41 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> Unterhausen: or ask memleak later tonight or tomorrow
07:41 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@discord> i forget what exact version i compiled, but it's 6.12.x RT for my pi4
07:44 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> lots of 120VAC >>2400W small appliances from China on Amazon 🙂
07:45 PM Tom_L: that would be absolute max for a 20A breaker
07:55 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> without derating
07:56 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> which is a no no
08:02 PM memleak: Unterhausen, you had a kernel question?
08:03 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> "anyone built a rt-preempt kernel for 6.12" Sid has a few
08:03 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> but he's probably asleep by now
08:03 PM lcnc-relay: <ntulinux2467@discord> Well I have built several so far, but I had to use the preempt_rt patches, not the mainline source, as there's several RT patches missing from mainline
08:03 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> near 9 on the east coast
08:04 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> he can grab it from Sid
08:05 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> 6.12.6-rt-amd64 what I am on today
08:07 PM lcnc-relay: <ntulinux2467@discord> do you have a /sys/kernel/realtime entry? "sudo ls /sys/kernel/realtime" if so, debian patched their kernel similar to what i had to do
08:07 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> I'm the only old person up passed 8pm
08:07 PM lcnc-relay: <ntulinux2467@discord> the preempt_rt kernel patch series for 6.12 are lagging behind
08:08 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> I missed the memo
08:08 PM lcnc-relay: <ntulinux2467@discord> that's why i'm hosting my own kernel at the moment: https://github.com/NTULINUX/linux
08:08 PM lcnc-relay: <ntulinux2467@discord> but it looks like debian is keeping the patches up to date like i am
08:25 PM linext: anyone know the keyword to find this lathe cutter tool on aliexpress? https://i.ibb.co/N9CTg1k/vncviewer-v3a9-Vtvfh-Y.png
08:31 PM Tom_L: dnmg
08:31 PM Tom_L: but there's different sizes
08:32 PM Tom_L: and many different materials
08:32 PM Tom_L: https://huanatools.com/the-complete-guide-to-dnmg-inserts/
08:32 PM Tom_L: just grabbed that one at random
08:34 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@discord> All you know is that is a D type insert. Could be DNMG any of the other many variants depending on the tool holder.
08:35 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@discord> See: https://catalogs.kennametal.com/Innovations-2022-01-English-Inch/14/ for a table.
08:35 PM Tom_L: https://www.kennametal.com/us/en/resources/blog/metal-cutting/selecting-carbide-inserts-for-metalworking.html
08:35 PM Tom_L: or z's link
08:37 PM Tom_L: https://www.carbidedepot.com/formulas-insert-d.htm
08:39 PM Tom_L: you'll want an alloy for SS (iirc that's a SS part)
08:43 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@discord> For example, I have holders that use DCMT331 or DCMT332 inserts depending on the nose radius I want. Coating selection is a whole different adventure but most of the aliexpress stuff will have a "steel", "stainless", or "aluminum" version. You might need to dig into the description to figures out which is which.
08:45 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@discord> A DNMG would not work in those holders as the relief angle would be wrong and the center hole is the wrong type.
08:46 PM Tom_L: that just came to mind because we used those quite a bit
08:46 PM linext: would these be suitable? https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2251832670111840.html
08:46 PM Tom_L: i know finding inserts is a whole adventure
08:46 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@discord> Tom_L, the carbidedepot link is a good reference. Thanks!
08:47 PM Tom_L: np
08:47 PM linext: my lathe chuck spins counter-clockwise and the cutter goes on the left side facing the spindle
08:47 PM Tom_L: front tool lathe
08:47 PM linext: is an insert is at a tighter angle than the g-code has programmed, will it still work?
08:47 PM linext: it's not going to hit anything i assume
08:48 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@discord> Usually as you don't normally want to be cutting with the back side of the tool. Always best to review it before hitting cycle start 🙂
08:48 PM Tom_L: lathe post are a bit different than mill since they take into account the tool shape for programming paths
08:49 PM Tom_L: tip radius etc
08:50 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@discord> Tip radius is pretty critical as if you get that wrong your corning blending will be off.
08:51 PM Tom_L: zincboy, they have a whole bunch of good references there: https://www.carbidedepot.com/resources
08:51 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@discord> The linked aliexpress tools will work as long as you get a size that will work with your lathe. I would buy the inserts at the same time. Those use DCxx inserts.
08:53 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@discord> The grade comparison chart is really useful as I am often buying surplus/nos inserts and trying to figure out what the obsolete coating grades are 🙂
