04:44 AM Tom_L: morning
04:50 AM JT-Cave: roycroft, do you have a photo of it all apart?
05:01 AM Tom_L: 24F high 38F
07:42 AM BorgPipe_ is now known as NetPipe
08:00 AM JT-Cave: https://pasteboard.co/bKGucteGAyK6.png
12:54 PM perry_j1987: hows it going guys
12:54 PM perry_j1987: got a bunch of sun that wasnt on the forecast today! charging up the shop's batteries nicely
01:00 PM bjorkintosh: free nuclear energy is always the best.
01:01 PM bjorkintosh: you should offer tours of the nuclear plant sometime, perry_j1987.
01:01 PM perry_j1987: its nothing too special
01:02 PM perry_j1987: but it keeps my small cnc shop running when i need it to
01:02 PM bjorkintosh: perry_j1987: the nuclear power plant I'm talking about is the sun.
01:02 PM bjorkintosh: :-D
01:03 PM perry_j1987: aye lol i know
01:03 PM bjorkintosh: I offer free tours by getting everyone together and pointing at it.
01:03 PM perry_j1987: lol
01:03 PM bjorkintosh: if they want a night tour, you point at any star.
01:04 PM xxcoder: fusion https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/18/climate/world-first-nuclear-fusion-power-plant-commmonwealth/index.html
01:04 PM xxcoder: seems it will be first in usa, grid powering fusion
01:06 PM perry_j1987: any of you guys have a k40 c02 laser
01:06 PM perry_j1987: i just picked one up
01:10 PM bjorkintosh: what are you going to use it for, perry_j1987?
01:11 PM perry_j1987: not fully sure yet lol i was looking at options to build an enclosure for this diode laser i have and ended up finding someone selling this brand new k40 for less than i was going to spend building an enclosure for the diode laser so i just picked it up
01:12 PM Roguish: xxcoder, fission not fusion... https://interestingengineering.com/energy/us-first-advanced-sodium-cooled-reactor
01:12 PM perry_j1987: but its kind of fun to harnes photons to power the shop and then cut stuff with more photons lol
01:14 PM xxcoder: Roguish: different location, different company
01:14 PM Roguish: yep
01:14 PM xxcoder: and its fusion on my link :)
01:14 PM Roguish: yeah, I saw it
01:14 PM Roguish: I worked a little on NIF
01:18 PM xxcoder: thats cool
01:18 PM xxcoder: or is it hot? ;)
01:52 PM bjorkintosh: speaking of touring a nuclear power plant: https://arstechnica.com/space/2024/12/were-about-to-fly-a-spacecraft-into-the-sun-for-the-first-time/
01:54 PM xxcoder: very hot
02:26 PM xxcoder: amazing https://youtu.be/JKjD9n8uA_Y
02:26 PM xxcoder: mking xmas ornament out of wood
02:37 PM roycroft: there are heaps of xmas ornament making videos
02:38 PM roycroft: heaps of wooden xmas ornament making videos, even
02:38 PM roycroft: most are pretty tack or pretty crappy or both
02:38 PM roycroft: frank's looks like it's going to be nice
02:38 PM xxcoder: yeah
02:38 PM roycroft: i often, if not mostly, do not like his aesthetic
02:39 PM roycroft: but i think i'll like this ornament
02:39 PM roycroft: i admire his skills and creativity, just not his aesthetic all that much
02:39 PM roycroft: i still watch his videos frequently anyway
02:39 PM xxcoder: thats perfectly fine
02:40 PM xxcoder: and yep I watch his channel based on skills
02:40 PM xxcoder: fun effects too
02:48 PM roycroft: yeah, i don't know now
02:48 PM roycroft: when i saw the beginning of the video i figured the ornament would be 60-80mm in diameter
02:48 PM roycroft: it's more like 150mm
02:48 PM roycroft: and looks way too big to me
02:48 PM xxcoder: yeah, he says its just too big at end lol
02:48 PM roycroft: it's still a cool design
02:49 PM xxcoder: it can be used elsewhere, just hang on its own or something
04:16 PM Unterhaus__ is now known as Unterhausen
04:16 PM Unterhausen: big lots is going under, where am I going to buy discount silverware for my lawn sculptures
04:16 PM xxcoder: soon no big lots eh
04:19 PM roycroft: i do not buy much at big lots
04:19 PM roycroft: it's the harbor freight of household goods
04:19 PM xxcoder: cant remember when I last even seen one, let alone enter. might be my fault lol
04:19 PM roycroft: but there are a few things they have that are really cheap and that are useful
04:19 PM roycroft: anyway
04:20 PM roycroft: both the eugene and springfield big lots are closing
04:20 PM roycroft: and are probably closed by now
04:20 PM roycroft: how did big lots handle this?
04:20 PM roycroft: by starting to send me daily emails about their special deals
04:20 PM roycroft: instead of an email every couple weeks or so
04:21 PM roycroft: and i can't unsubscribe, because the link to do that goes through a tracking site and my browser blocks it
04:21 PM roycroft: when i get around to it i'll go to my anti-spam service and blacklist them
04:32 PM Unterhausen: I feel like some of the stores may stay open?
04:42 PM roycroft: yeah, i think some are
04:42 PM roycroft: but both of the ones nearish to me are closing/closed
04:43 PM JT-Shop: we have a big lots
04:43 PM JT-Shop: roycroft, did you get a photo of the axle all apart?
04:51 PM roycroft: no, not yet
04:51 PM roycroft: i'll see what i can do after work
04:51 PM roycroft: i think i need to replace the hub lock as well, which is going to be expensive
04:51 PM JT-Shop: ok, I'm just wondering what's in there
04:52 PM JT-Shop: bouch
04:52 PM JT-Shop: ouch even
04:52 PM xxcoder: that sucks
04:53 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, is that pasteboard a WISIWYG attempt?
04:53 PM JT-Shop: yup and it's not an attempt :)
04:53 PM Tom_L: WYSIWYG
04:54 PM roycroft: there are cheap ones
04:55 PM roycroft: but warn are $500 or so for a pair, and they only sell them in pairs
04:55 PM xxcoder: cant buy single on ebay or something?
04:55 PM roycroft: i started work at 6:30 this morning
04:55 PM roycroft: i think i can sneak out 10 minutes early and take a couple pictures
04:56 PM JT-Shop: cool
04:58 PM roycroft: this has obviously been failing for a long time
04:58 PM roycroft: but there were never any symptoms
04:59 PM JT-Shop: that makes it hard to detect when no symptoms show up
05:02 PM Tom_L: may wanna check the other side then
05:04 PM xxcoder: yeah should check
05:06 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, is that a python app?
05:06 PM JT-Shop: yup
05:06 PM Tom_L: nice
05:06 PM JT-Shop: got a bit more to do for the push button like show disabled and hover
05:07 PM JT-Shop: the cool thing is is puts up the qss for copy and paste when you're happy with the result
05:07 PM Tom_L: the colors drive the text or vise versa?
05:08 PM JT-Shop: you click on the button and a color picker pops up and you pick the color
05:10 PM roycroft: https://roycroft.us/F350
05:10 PM JT-Shop: I'll push it in the morning
05:10 PM roycroft: i haven't cleaned anything up yet, obviously
05:11 PM roycroft: the last picture is of the bearings and seals
05:11 PM roycroft: it's hard to tell what that stuff is :)
05:12 PM xxcoder: if its that bad then the other side probably was equally unmaintained
05:12 PM roycroft: i could probably get away with reusing the outer axle shaft, but with the spline damage i'm going to replace it anyway
05:12 PM JT-Shop: starts off not to bad then progresses to bad
05:12 PM Tom_L: what a mess
05:12 PM roycroft: xxcoder: i'm going to be inspecting the other side when i'm done with this side
05:13 PM roycroft: it will be interesting to see how it drives after the repair
05:13 PM roycroft: maybe it's been telling me that it's on its way out since the day i bought the vehicle
05:13 PM Tom_L: curious how a spline could get messed up like that
05:13 PM roycroft: and maybe the front end of an f350 is a lot tighter than i thought
05:13 PM roycroft: that could be old damage, tom_l
05:14 PM Tom_L: true
05:14 PM roycroft: this hub may have been replaced before
05:14 PM roycroft: what i know is that the new one i just bought is one piece
05:14 PM roycroft: and the one i took off is in two pieces
05:14 PM JT-Shop: that's something you never know about old vehicles
05:14 PM roycroft: yeah
05:14 PM roycroft: and this pickup has 375k miles on it
05:14 PM roycroft: and it was a farm/ranch vehicle
05:15 PM Tom_L: did ford ever switch over to CV joints?
05:15 PM roycroft: i don't know
05:15 PM roycroft: if so, fairly recently, as they used the same axle shafts well into the 20 teens at least
05:15 PM JT-Shop: it was interesting to take apart the front suspension on the C3
05:16 PM roycroft: xxcoder: i can get individual hub locks, but they would be mismatched
05:16 PM roycroft: i'm thinking i should just get a pair and replace both sides
05:16 PM roycroft: which would give me a good opportunity to inspect the passenger side
05:17 PM roycroft: i don't use 4wd that often, but when i need it i need it
05:17 PM roycroft: it was a major reason for purchasing that vehicle
05:17 PM JT-Shop: my thoughts on the C3 front suspension was change all the wear parts and not have to worry about it for the rest of my life
05:17 PM roycroft: that and because it has the best small diesel engine ever made - the first gen 7.3l powerstroke
05:18 PM JT-Shop: same with the brakes
05:18 PM roycroft: the rest of my life is not as many years as it used to be
05:18 PM JT-Shop: same here
05:18 PM roycroft: and there's a good chance i won't be able to drive an f350 towards the very ened
05:18 PM roycroft: those factors, plus that this is not my daily driver, means it's not as important to me to replace all the wear parts as i do repairs
05:19 PM roycroft: i can make some compromises and probably come out fine
05:19 PM roycroft: realistically i'll probably never hit 500k miles on that pickup
05:19 PM roycroft: i may not hit 400k miles
05:19 PM JT-Shop: front suspension parts for the C3 are cheap so it's a no brainer
05:20 PM xxcoder: roy ya makes sense, plus you probably need to check other side anyway
05:20 PM roycroft: f350 parts are expensive
05:20 PM JT-Shop: the parts you're replacing are not cheap
05:20 PM roycroft: yeah
05:20 PM roycroft: i should do an oil change before long
05:21 PM roycroft: but that engine takes 15k of fully synth oil
05:21 PM roycroft: so even an oil change is expensive
05:21 PM roycroft: er, 15l
05:21 PM JT-Shop: wow
05:21 PM xxcoder: 15k usd would be swimming pool or larger of oil lol
05:22 PM Tom_L: i found on the boy's trucks they take more than the normal vehicle
05:22 PM roycroft: or maybe a quart, after the ne administration comes in and slaps the tariffs on everythig
05:22 PM roycroft: we have to import almost all of our oil
05:22 PM roycroft: we export more than we import
05:22 PM roycroft: but there are no refineries in this country that can handle the overwhelming majority of oil that we produce
05:23 PM roycroft: so we have to sell all our oil overseas and import all the oil we use domestically
05:23 PM roycroft: when the price of crude goes up 25% the price of refined oil will go up 50% at least
05:27 PM Roguish: well, hold on to your shorts. Trumpass is in the house in January and everything is going to the shitter....
05:33 PM Tom_L: at least maybe someone will have a job cleaning the shitter
05:33 PM JT-Shop: lol
05:33 PM roycroft: he'll hire an undocumented alien to clean his
05:34 PM roycroft: and make the person wear a red hat that was made in china
05:34 PM Roguish: from Mars, or Venus ???
05:34 PM roycroft: but i think president musk will be even worse than 45 was
05:34 PM Roguish: and again, the bridge to Matrix is down.....
05:35 PM Tom_L: Roguish, they are working on it
05:35 PM xxcoder: we already did the temp fix
05:35 PM Roguish: cool
05:35 PM xxcoder: not sure why bot isnt back
05:35 PM roycroft: the funding bill just passed the house and is being sent to the senate
05:35 PM roycroft: so there's 218 people who will be without jobs soon
05:36 PM roycroft: because it's not the bill that dear future leader wants
05:38 PM Roguish: if we get lucky, maybe he'll stoke out while he's eating a big mac
05:38 PM xxcoder: jd/musk co-presidency
05:39 PM Roguish: very scary
05:40 PM roycroft: there's talk about making musk speaker of the house
05:40 PM xxcoder: yeah heard of that
05:41 PM Roguish: not sure it that can be done...constitutionally
05:41 PM roycroft: which would be legal to do, but he wold not be eligible to become president, so the president pro-tempore of the senate would be the actual second in line
05:41 PM roycroft: it can
05:41 PM xxcoder: Roguish: it can be done. it does not list requirement of being in house
05:41 PM Roguish: ok
05:41 PM Roguish: did not know that
05:42 PM roycroft: the speaker does not have to be a member of the house
05:42 PM roycroft: but musk cannot become president
05:42 PM roycroft: he's not a natural-born citizen
05:42 PM Roguish: anyway, trumpass talks about alot of things he can't do. legally.
05:43 PM Roguish: ok, enough with the political shit...... sorry
05:44 PM roycroft: the question is: would musk be entitled to a security detail as speaker of the house?
05:44 PM Roguish: probably
05:44 PM roycroft: currently the speaker of the house and the president pro-tempore of the senate are eligible for a security detail
05:44 PM roycroft: but not because of those positions
05:44 PM Roguish: he probably already has his own
05:45 PM roycroft: they are entitled because the are second and third, repspectively, in the line of succession
06:02 PM Roguish: chilly, foggy, overcast, and under 50 all day.....bleak
06:03 PM Roguish: and rain for the next few days...
06:03 PM xxcoder: its rain or rain for few days here
06:04 PM Roguish: roycroft, you're gonna get wet too, soon
06:26 PM roycroft: yes
06:26 PM roycroft: and tomorrow is my day that i plan on working on the f350
06:27 PM roycroft: but i did bring an ez-up over from the old shop, so hopefully i'll be at least somewhat dry when doing that work
06:28 PM roycroft: i need some parts that the parts store don't carry and can't order, but the ford dealership parts department is open tomorrow
06:28 PM roycroft: hopefully they have the stuff
06:29 PM roycroft: things like a thrust bearing and o-ring and snap ring
06:29 PM roycroft: which should not be outrageously expensive, even at the dealership parts counter
06:33 PM roycroft: this is one of my favorite shop accessories i've ever purchased, and it will come in really handy when i deal with this vehicle repair:
06:33 PM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005POGY74/
06:34 PM roycroft: i keep one filled with acetone at all times, and i'll use a fair amount of it this weekend
08:24 PM linext: i have a cnc lathe and the spindle stopped working regularly
08:24 PM linext: sometimes it would turn on, but most of the time it didn't
08:25 PM linext: i'm thinking of just removing the controller and associated parts
08:25 PM linext: just putting in a AC PWM for a wood cutting router
08:26 PM linext: It looks like this: https://www.proxibid.com/lotinformation/43191256/paxton-patterson-cnc-mini-metal-lathe-training-center
08:29 PM linext: I'm creating an access panel on the top left side
08:56 PM bjorkintosh: <linext> sometimes it would turn on, but most of the time it didn't <-- bad relay?
09:04 PM linext: i don't think it requires a relay
09:04 PM linext: i can hear the AC transformer making a whine
09:04 PM linext: it was weird, i was taking off the back cover and forgot to turn the lathe off
09:04 PM linext: it just started spinning
09:04 PM linext: so i tried cutting some stuff and it turned off again after a couple minutes
09:05 PM linext: this version has a screen for RPM and that was off as well
10:30 PM bjorkintosh: hmm.
